Her PIANO PLAYING was everything!!!!!!!!!!! This is true soul singing! (we do NOT have "soul" singers any more.....ok a few, Ledisi, Anthony Hamilton, Kelly Price....) She played by "ear". God given talent: voice, ear, piano. Teez McGee, go play her first album on Atlantic (Never Loved A Man) she played piano all over it! The hits youve heard...Think, Natural Woman, Aint No Way, Dr. Feelgood, Brand New Me.......and several others she's playing piano!!!! So glad I got her ENTIRE career!

If Simon and Garfunkle wrote this, Aretha made it her own with this performance.
Paul Simon wrote all the music (melody and lyrics) of the group, Simon and Garfunkel. Simon was also a good acoustic guitarist. Garfunkel's contribution was a magnificent tenor voice. He was the lead singer on the original version of this song. Simon was lead singer on many of their songs but not this one. And the 2 men harmonized like butter and toast.
They broke up soon after release of the mega-hit Bridge Over Troubled Water because Garfunkel was spending a lot of time making movies and Simon sorta had enough of doing the music alone, so he made it official and went solo. Simon had a successful solo career too. Garfunkel had major roles in 2 significant movies, Catch-22 and Carnal Knowledge but his acting career fizzled after that. He made a few albums covering classic songs with that tenor voice of his but the singing career sorta fizzled out too.
Simon and Garfunkel have had numerous reunion concerts over the years.

This song saved me from a suicide attempt. Still saves me to this day. I have ptsd from being raped as a child. Can listen to Aretha for hours. Music is a healer all the way down to the organ piano. A singer is another instrument of a song. It heals the most broken person.

I can't think of many voices I love as much as Aretha Franklin's. Probably only topped by Mahalia Jackson.
The original version of this song was only a year old (roughly) in 1971. There were 2 massive hits my sophomore year of high school, played frequently on AM radio. They were:

Let It Be-Beatles.
Both songs have a spiritual vibe to them without being religious.
