Her performance ‘Everyone’ might be one of the best vocal showcases I’ve heard, it absolutely solidified her as the top singer on the planet in my opinion.
She is a South Korean gospel singer - she arranges all of her own performances. She is also a professor and an author, speaks several languages and has never signed to a label. She is a very devout Christian and has always just wanted to share her voice with people to make them feel better. She is a wonderful and talented woman

I think you are confusing famous with expert. So reference some actual "vocal" experts... (technically she is near perfect but so are many others)
Which experts? if you were to say she is the best Gospel singer on the planet that could be difficult to argue with... but she is not the best opera singer, jazz singer, metal singer, rock singer, country singer, or any form of world singing (Carnatic, Hindustani, Mawwal, Pelimanni, Koohmei etc) singer. She is amazing no doubt so just say she is one of the greatest singers of all time and that is hard to argue with.
The fact that she made you cry just solidifies my own reaction to her when I first found her videos years ago. I don't have your musical theory and singing background, but I do love music, and she may as well be her own instrument in all of her arrangements.

Awesome reaction! G5 is actually not high for her, it is right at her tessitura. Her register is completely connected, and each note is supported and resonant. She can belt up to a C6 with a perfectly balanced mixed voice. As an operatic singer, she's technically the most complete vocalist I've heard.
But what he said is that he heard fullchest, not exactly mix voice, and for fullchest is not normal get an G. But belt in mix, we know some singers that can go in 6 octaves.

The problem is that they do so by straining and screaming which is not considered singing. The reason why Sohyang is so great is that her entire range is supported and resonant. I agree that Sohyang is perhaps the best on the planet - right there with Dimash. There are many Sohyang songs that deserve attention but I am just going to mention two: "Arirang Alone" which is a traditional Korean song hundreds of years old and the other is totally different - Day, Day; a very casual performance outdoors in some sort of festival (with a teepee??) and features Sohyang rapping(!!!!). She is Korean (now 44) a ccm/gospel singer, devout Christian, cancer survivor, university prof, cartoonist and fantasy novelist. She is not only one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet but a remarkable human being also. She is an independent artist who has turned down recording contracts from the big labels, including from Sony during 2020. She has no social media, and says her goal is to use her voice in order to bring comfort to people going through difficult times. She does all the arrangements of her performances together with her team. I urge you to continue the journey you started, as what you witnessed is just the tip of the iceberg. I really appreciate your sincere responses to Sohyang's songs. Even though I also listened to her songs indirectly through RUclips, not directly, I feel comforted in my heart to feel like my elder sister is singing in front of me. No matter what anyone says, she is always the best singer for me.

Somehow it’s more insane than this (I honestly consider Bridge over troubled water one of her “milder” performances in terms of range (yes, she belts even higher than Gs) and riffs and stamina, which is crazy in and of itself lmao) So buckle your seatbelts coz that performance? Insane. （Also would recommend performances like arirang alone, lean on me, etc.)
SoHyang literally has one of the best mixed voice ever. It is just every vocalist's dream to have such a balanced and powerful mix. I've also heard from some other vocal coaches that one thing that is so amazing about SoHyang is that her mixed voice is just so powerful, resonant and has a lot of weight and gritness quality to it that we might sometimes get confused whether she is singing in her full chest or in her mixed voice. The mastery and control she has over her instrument is just insane. And of course it's not just about her high notes, her voice itself is a GEM. She touched people's hearts at the very first moment she open her mouth and sing.

I am late to this video, but Sohyang has been my favorite singer for a number of years now. And that coming from someone who has been singing for quite a number of years myself.
I've read that she studied with Seth Riggs. You really can't go wrong with any of her performances as your next choice, but I'm partial to her rendition of Arirang Alone because you can really see the personal meaning it has for her, as well as it's a masterclass in audience connection.
Sohyang said in an interview earlier this year, 2024, that she had five sessions with Seth Riggs while on vacation in California with her husband. That was in 2009, though she couldn't recall in the interview and just said it was a long time ago. So, other than those five sessions, she is a 100% self taught singer! She said that what she learned from Seth Riggs was how to hit a note precisely. Sohyang is stupefying no matter what. 👀😮🤷♂

@@goodm999 if you want a longer one that shows a good amount of his vocal skills I would recommend the story of one sky which he wrote and you could try the live version. If you like operatic or good chest voice Ulysse is good. For a little bit more modern I would say across endless dimensions Slavic bazaar 2021. Those songs don’t really go into his high range which he can sing soprano like in the diva dance Bastau concert if you like soprano high

I love that you reacted to her she is a global treasure she got me to start singing lessons at the age of 59 she transformed my life listening to her sing this I cried for hours over her singing capabilities and how she delivered it with such passion. so please keep going a few things that are a must she sings i have nothing and in my opinion sings it on a whole other level that Whitney also the song Everyone she said is the most difficul song she has ever sung and its over 6 min WOW. I really appreciated your analysis, in the beginning I appreciated you mentioning how she almost made you cry, because I too feel that her voice is just so powerful but as well as the range that she can hit is just truly unbelievable and completely unheard of, and it's such a beauty that how could you not cry? A second part that I really like to hear analysis was towards the end, when you were talking about her high note, where she spoke "I will lay me" then went super high super quick and MADE IT WORK SO WELL! I just discovered her a couple months ago but this is my favorite performance by her. After seeing it thought "Am I crazy or is that the best vocal performance I've ever seen?" I also love the way she connects with the audience.

It is impressive that you as a singer have serious "street cred" for what is difficult and what things impress you most. So Hyang is phenomenal. Her range is hard to believe but as you mentioned, her control throughout her range is off the charts. On top of the "technical" perfection she demonstrates, she shares a part of her with every song: "a heart to love, and in that heart, courage, to make love known" . She seems to " unclasp to us the book even of her secret soul" (with apology to W.S. for paraphrasing). It is a pity she is not more widely known and the media have not seen fit to support her more than they have.
Sohyang is one of my favorite female singers. She's so amazing. I wouldn't call her the Korean Mariah Carey because she doesn't whistle. She's more like the Korean Whitney Houston. Check out her rendition of "Everyone". To recommend someone new for your channel: Forestella, a male crossover vocal quartet, also from South Korea like Sohyang. Their cover of "Hijo de la luna" would be a good start.
I can't believe Peter hasn't Reacted to Forestella. They are all amazing. Ko WooRim's Basso Profundo just grabs you, but Kang Hyung-Ho's vocal range can almost match Dimash, (with no previous vocal training other than as a hobby Rock Singer). 😲 Cho Mingyu is such a wonderful leader and driving force, with a lovely tenor voice. And Bae Doo-Hoon's Theatrical background is so effective (especially on "Je suis Malade" which is my favourite even though I'm a huge Queen/Freddie Mercury fan). Back to Sohyang.. Just so pure every performance. You never worry she won't hit a note.

In my nearly 70 years, I have never heard a more perfect vocal harmony or powerful emotion conveyed, than on Forestella's "Je suis Malade". 😢 💔 It is simply superb on every level, with the "wall of sound" at the end taking your breath away. I don't know what they put in the water in S Korea, but if I could sing like Sohyang, Forestella or La Poem, I'd drink the rivers dry. Arirang Alone is absolutely insane. Everyone is supposedly the most technically challenging per Sohyang herself. She sings with so much passion, and I kind of enjoy a bunch of her other emotionally intimate love song covers like Misty (Begin Again Korea version), Hug Me (DMC 2018 version). Her rendition of I Have Nothing (DMC 2015 version) was also the reason David Foster invited her to do a gig with him. Michael Bolton heard her rendition of Lean On Me and gave her a standing ovation and an invitation to come sing with him at his concert in South Korea.

For me, Dimash is the best male singer and Sohyang the best female singer on the planet. She sings purely to bring people comfort and hope. She’s a cancer survivor who often has pneumonia from Heb B she got from a blood transfusion. She teaches music at University, writes sci-fi books and sings her CCM! Her husband’s family and her family do all of her arrangements. When asked where her singing talent comes from, she quickly says “God”. Loved the reaction. And go watch her sing a song called EVERYONE. She says it’s technically the hardest song she’s ever sung and she doesn’t know if she’ll ever be well enough to sing it again.

From the first smile that broke out on your face since the first verse, I recognize that you has the knowledge and appreciation to enjoy Sohyang's vocal gift. It's always a joy to watch a professional's opinion on Sohyang's singing. You wondered about Sohyang's riff in this performance during the video. From following Sohyang for a while, I know that she spent inordinate amount of time in preparation of her performance. There is no question in my mind that every note was carefully examined and incorporated in advance for such an eventful stage. As someone who's been singing gospel for more than 20 years, Sohyang can also belt and riff free style as you described, particularly in church events that she participated in. It is also useful to know that Sohyang has been recognized for her superb skills in using her mixed voice, paving the way for her powerful belts and seamless agility in transition. Sohyang has a rather large collection of fantastic performance videos available on the internet. She's definitely mixing much lower than you think at first listen. She's always had the ability to pull her chest voice VERY high but she's given many interviews where she credits lessons with Seth Riggs back in 2010 or so for helping her "find" her mix. Because she's so comfortable mixing she's able to make her way through her register transitions smoothly except when she wants the flip to be heard for effect. As others have said you are going to find out that G5 isn't close to the top of her belt range. Last thing is that her core goodness always shines through, she uses her vocal gifts to tell stories that she invites the audience to experience with her. Just not something you see from the typical "diva." Subscribed and looking forward to you discovering more of her catalog.

There are plenty of singers that can go up to 6 octaves. The problem is that they do so by straining and screaming which is not considered singing. The reason why Sohyang is so great is that her entire range is supported and resonant. Sorry for the late response.

I agree that Sohyang is perhaps the best on the planet - right there with Dimash. There are many Sohyang songs that deserve attention but I am just going to mention two: "Arirang Alone" which is a traditional Korean song hundreds of years old and the other is totally different - Day, Day; a very casual performance outdoors in some sort of festival (with a teepee??) and features Sohyang rapping(!!!!). She is not only one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet but a remarkable human being also. She is an independent artist who has turned down recording contracts from the big labels, including from Sony during 2020. She has no social media, and says her goal is to use her voice in order to bring comfort to people going through difficult times. Somehow it’s more insane than this (I honestly consider Bridge over troubled water one of her “milder” performances in terms of range (yes, she belts even higher than Gs) and riffs and stamina, which is crazy in and of itself lmao) So buckle your seatbelts coz that performance? SoHyang literally has one of the best mixed voice ever. It is just every vocalist's dream to have such a balanced and powerful mix. I've also heard from some other vocal coaches that one thing that is so amazing about SoHyang is that her mixed voice is just so powerful, resonant and has a lot of weight and gritness quality to it that we might sometimes get confused whether she is singing in her full chest or in her mixed voice. The mastery and control she has over her instrument is just insane. And of course it's not just about her high notes, her voice itself is a GEM. She touched people's hearts at the very first moment she open her mouth and sing.

I’ve never known a singer quite like SoHyang. My eyes still sweat when she sings and I’ve watched these videos hundreds of times.
I've read that she studied with Seth Riggs. You really can't go wrong with any of her performances as your next choice, but I'm partial to her rendition of Arirang Alone because you can really see the personal meaning it has for her, as well as it's a masterclass in audience connection.
Sohyang said in an interview earlier this year, 2024, that she had five sessions with Seth Riggs while on vacation in California with her husband. That was in 2009, though she couldn't recall in the interview and just said it was a long time ago. So, other than those five sessions, she is a 100% self taught singer! She said that what she learned from Seth Riggs was how to hit a note precisely. Sohyang is stupefying no matter what. 👀😮🤷♂

@@goodm999 if you want a longer one that shows a good amount of his vocal skills I would recommend the story of one sky which he wrote and you could try the live version. If you like operatic or good chest voice Ulysse is good. For a little bit more modern I would say across endless dimensions Slavic bazaar 2021. Those songs don’t really go into his high range which he can sing soprano like in the diva dance Bastau concert if you like soprano high

I really appreciated your analysis, in the beginning I appreciated you mentioning how she almost made you cry, because I too feel that her voice is just so powerful but as well as the range that she can hit is just truly unbelievable and completely unheard of, and it's such a beauty that how could you not cry? A second part that I really like to hear analysis was towards the end, when you were talking about her high note, where she spoke "I will lay me" then went super high super quick and MADE IT WORK SO WELL! It is impressive that you as a singer have serious "street cred" for what is difficult and what things impress you most. So Hyang is phenomenal. Her range is hard to believe but as you mentioned, her control throughout her range is off the charts. On top of the "technical" perfection she demonstrates, she shares a part of her with every song: "a heart to love, and in that heart, courage, to make love known" . She seems to " unclasp to us the book even of her secret soul" (with apology to W.S. for paraphrasing). It is a pity she is not more widely known and the media have not seen fit to support her more than they have.

Sohyang is one of my favorite female singers. She's so amazing. I wouldn't call her the Korean Mariah Carey because she doesn't whistle. She's more like the Korean Whitney Houston. Check out her rendition of "Everyone". To recommend someone new for your channel: Forestella, a male crossover vocal quartet, also from South Korea like Sohyang. Their cover of "Hijo de la luna" would be a good start.
I can't believe Peter hasn't Reacted to Forestella. They are all amazing. Ko WooRim's Basso Profundo just grabs you, but Kang Hyung-Ho's vocal range can almost match Dimash, (with no previous vocal training other than as a hobby Rock Singer). 😲 Cho Mingyu is such a wonderful leader and driving force, with a lovely tenor voice. And Bae Doo-Hoon's Theatrical background is so effective (especially on "Je suis Malade" which is my favourite even though I'm a huge Queen/Freddie Mercury fan). Back to Sohyang.. Just so pure every performance. You never worry she won't hit a note.

In my nearly 70 years, I have never heard a more perfect vocal harmony or powerful emotion conveyed, than on Forestella's "Je suis Malade". 😢 💔 It is simply superb on every level, with the "wall of sound" at the end taking your breath away. I don't know what they put in the water in S Korea, but if I could sing like Sohyang, Forestella or La Poem, I'd drink the rivers dry. Forestella "Je suis Malade"

Arirang Alone is absolutely insane. Everyone is supposedly the most technically challenging per Sohyang herself. She sings with so much passion, and I kind of enjoy a bunch of her other emotionally intimate love song covers like Misty (Begin Again Korea version), Hug Me (DMC 2018 version). Her rendition of I Have Nothing (DMC 2015 version) was also the reason David Foster invited her to do a gig with him. Michael Bolton heard her rendition of Lean On Me and gave her a standing ovation and an invitation to come sing with him at his concert in South Korea.

For me, Dimash is the best male singer and Sohyang the best female singer on the planet. She sings purely to bring people comfort and hope. She’s a cancer survivor who often has pneumonia from Heb B she got from a blood transfusion. She teaches music at University, writes sci-fi books and sings her CCM! Her husband’s family and her family do all of her arrangements. When asked where her singing talent comes from, she quickly says “God”. Loved the reaction. And go watch her sing a song called EVERYONE. She says it’s technically the hardest song she’s ever sung and she doesn’t know if she’ll ever be well enough to sing it again.

From the first smile that broke out on your face since the first verse, I recognize that you has the knowledge and appreciation to enjoy Sohyang's vocal gift. It's always a joy to watch a professional's opinion on Sohyang's singing. You wondered about Sohyang's riff in this performance during the video. From following Sohyang for a while, I know that she spent inordinate amount of time in preparation of her performance. There is no question in my mind that every note was carefully examined and incorporated in advance for such an eventful stage. As someone who's been singing gospel for more than 20 years, Sohyang can also belt and riff free style as you described, particularly in church events that she participated in. It is also useful to know that Sohyang has been recognized for her superb skills in using her mixed voice, paving the way for her powerful belts and seamless agility in transition.

She's definitely mixing much lower than you think at first listen. She's always had the ability to pull her chest voice VERY high but she's given many interviews where she credits lessons with Seth Riggs back in 2010 or so for helping her "find" her mix. Because she's so comfortable mixing she's able to make her way through her register transitions smoothly except when she wants the flip to be heard for effect. As others have said you are going to find out that G5 isn't close to the top of her belt range. Last thing is that her core goodness always shines through, she uses her vocal gifts to tell stories that she invites the audience to experience with her. Just not something you see from the typical "diva." Subscribed and looking forward to you discovering more of her catalog.
