WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

It's +1, +2 vs. Gullible people
Only both old and new testaments... otherwise there isn't enough heft and it curls... a full king james hard back can either take down a rabbit at 8 yards or roll 9563 joints

"I´ve a thousand reasons to believe it´s true"...... and fails to present 1 valid reason
Big "so much evidence I don't need to provide it" energy
To be fair, he never said they were good or valid reasons lol
Trust me bruh.
Did the Earth exist before the sun? It's so hard to take a call seriously when they come right out of the gate and say everything in this book of contradictions is true.
Plants and day and night before the sun. Yeah makes sense.
Science has shaped the world. Religion has fragmented progress.
Dark ages?
Science has tried to shine light on everything possible. Religion(s) have constantly tried to close the blinds to live in the dark
True
I am beyond disgusted at ANY adult who thinks the Bible is true. They are sick, lying hypocrites.
So you don't believe that spiders and myriapods have four legs?
Atheist: Is it true?
Theist: Look how much INFLUENCE it has had!
Atheist: Yeah, very. But is it _true?_
Theist: Well look at the MORALS!
Atheist: Yeah, some good, many awful. ...But is it _true?_
Theist: Well look at the BENEFITS!
Atheist: Yeah, mixed. But is it _true?_
Theist: Well look at how OLD it is. Time is a test. And my thing has stood the heck out of it!
Atheist: Yeah, but is it _true?_
...
The bibles influence is more negative than positive, Dark Ages is just one example.
But the Bible is so GREAT, don't you see?
Exactly. I believe that ants have four legs and no queen, because the bible says so.
I understand how the christian decided what was morally correct but in this posted conversation how did the atheist come to the conclusion that some good/some awful?
@@freeyourmind7538 Same way as any honest human.
So well written that light came before the sun, let’s move to the next verse!
well the CMB is from 380,000 years after the Big Bang as the first light long before the formation of the first stars.
When this caller says Christianity shaped western civilization, he is absolutely wrong. We abolished slavery, we have given women equal rights, we don’t stone children because they call somebody Baldi, etc.… So this caller is delusional and arrogantly ignorant.
Christianity certainly DID shape Western civilisation, in many ways - it was at the forefront of education, forming early schools and universities, it has influenced art and architecture down many centuries and it's teachings have formed the basis of laws in many countries. It's also caused wars and has been picked over and adapted as societies have evolved, so you're right to point out that we don't follow the Christian bible to the letter, never have done. Ron, the caller, doesn't admit that at all..
Back in “Biblical times,” slavery was OK, subjugation of women was OK, stoning to death of Gays was OK. Since then, mostly over the past 100 years, we have progressed beyond those beliefs. That’s progress for the human race. Question is, did that progress come from religion or the secular world? The answer is obvious. Progress in human rights happened not because of religion, but in spite of it. The same can be said for technology, or ANY kind of progress.
Didn't the kids laughing with the bald guy get mauled to death by a bear?
@@carolinenagel7085Yes lol. It does state that a child can be stoned for disrespecting their parents, though. My mother held that over my head often growing up lol
Well now hold on, religion is embedded in our government sadly and we're taking away women's rights, like birth control, access to abortions, etc.
So Ron’s holy book ‘The Bible’ is so amazing and so influential it couldn’t have just been written by man which is exactly what a Muslim would say about the Quran and then Ron goes onto give exactly the same, but what he thinks are unique, answers to all the questions asked of him about the Bible that a Muslim would give about the Quran?
So now we don't have human-like gods, now we have god-like humans. That's so not human-centric
If, in 4000 years, I knew that people were taking something that I wrote as the universal truth, and they hadn't learned more and advanced beyond me, I'd be so horrified.
I'm getting a strong sense that this is the first and only time that guy has ever tried this material in front of a non-believing audience.
He seems to have no idea just how arbitrary and circular his arguments are.
He's tried it before. "Ron" is JRobin, a repeat caller with a distinct droning voice filled with smug
@@kaihedgie1747he’s used tons of names. His “mmm hmm” like he’s listening when he isn’t sticks out like a sore thumb.
Aww, Ron thinks his mythology is too special to be made by people! How precious!
with non-human god which immediately brings to mid Tuts father Akhenaten who worshipped the Sun/Aten and pissed off all the priests so much his name was erased from official records.
Bless his heart.
Synopsis of this call:
Hosts: Were looking for your best evidence that Xianity is true and not just opinion X. So what do you have for us?
Caller: yeah, yeah. Well opinion X....
No, you are not looking for evidence. A believer in God is essentially saying, All things denote that there is a God. Atheists have to have believers in God to oppose. With believers, they have, All things that exist provide no way of proving there is a God. Without God, all they have is, All things that exist have no way of proving. Atheists would be totally without motivation without God to oppose.
@@rbwinn3what a word salad, well done
@@rbwinn3This is nonsensical drivel.
@@rbwinn3Please, have someone human, not a "holy spirit" or some other fanciful nonsense, read your post to make sure it's rational and coherent to cognizant humans before posting it.
@@rbwinn3I agree that without the claim that a god exists, then atheists also wouldn't exist. What's your point?
Sounds like somebody who has only ever read one book and just decided that was good enough
“Genesis is a good example because it’s not chauvinistic…anyway, this is why I think god created us and everything for us because we’re his special children and the only beings on the planet that he cares about.”
Katy is so pretty
I’m certain the hosts know that the Bible is not even remotely the first text to posit a god/gods outside of mankind. What a bizarre claim.
When did she say that?
@@angrydoggy9170 The caller said it around minute 8:00
@@angrydoggy9170 The caller said it around minute 8:00
@@benjaminmadrigalperez9010 The caller, not the host.
@@angrydoggy9170 Yes, they are saying that they are sure that the hosts know that he's willing, even though they didn't explicitly call him out on that specific claim.
Critical thinking would extremely help this poor man.
Just because you place a god concept outside of existence itself, doesn't change the `human like` qualities it's being given. It's referred to as a father figure with he/him pronouns. It apparently feels things like regret, jealousy, anger, etc. It supposedly was here on Earth for awhile, as a human male. We are supposedly "created in its image." The only real difference between putting it on top of some mountain somewhere, is that `outside of existence` itself, makes those qualities inexplicable nonsense.
What Ron forgets is that, in addition to being written by humans, the Bible is also _interpreted_ by humans, and humans have a knack for self-deception, rationalization, and just plain ol' mistakes. Someone who _wants_ to interpret the Bible as something that could only have been divinely inspired is likely to do so.
"Every god before this was man-like"
The Sun Disk Aten: BRO WHO TF ARE YOU?
Men guided by science and reason put a spacecraft on the moon, men guided by religion and blind faith put an airliner in a skyscraper.
"How is it possible...." over and over. This is the longest-winded Argument from Incredulity I've ever heard.
Science flies to the moon, Religion flies you into Buildings.
I'm just so amazed that the bible is so great, its just so amazing!
The reasons Christianity is so widespread: the 4 C's:
Colonization, Conquest, Conversion, Coercion.
And a fifth-- Cee U Next Tuesday s.
Ron is big on the Lauper/Goldblum Hypothesis.
The Bible is true because “Vibes.”
"I'm pretty sure other religions have that to. Here are examples"
NANANANANA NO THEY DON'T I CAN'T HEAR YOU.
Hope he's from Alberta, not BC but we have our share too. Why are they so stunned. My best friend is dislodged too.
I find it so odd that theists will talk about "Judeo-Christian" values, while also often arguing "that's the old testament, Jesus changed that!", which is something the jews would not agree with, so these two groups hold VASTLY different views on values and the foundation for those values.
It's because it suddenly became very important to pretend that Christians hadn't been discriminating against and heavily oppressing Jews for many centuries, following certain events in the early 1900s.
Plus Christians have been persecuting Jews for a lot of centuries. Real, not fake, persecution
That's in part because they don't want to say "Abrahamic Religions" (which is what they are) because that includes Islam, and they don't like Islam. Wish they'd ask some devout Jews what _they_ think about the phrase, "Judeo-Christian".... It's just another way to lay claim to a legitimacy they don't have.
Doesn't feel so good when someone says they have the 'true revealed scripture that superscedes yours, that yours was just the precursor for' does it Christians? WhOOPS.
Hey ron, do animals get their markings from the patterns their parents were staring at as they rutted? No? Then the bible is wrong about something.
That would explain how I’m so pale with two black parents, though. /j
@@Leith_CrowtherI get the joke, but for real genetics is weird LOL
”the value system are the same”. So, no bacon eating.
The Bible can’t be made by humans because it isn’t about humans! It’s about the magic super human who made humans to be the mostest super special main characters of earth!
Yes, very humble book.
Great work, keep it up!
You show so much respect to the caller listening to him giving the same answer again and again... 'I think.. I believe...'

That's how we beat the "god with us" soldiers of Germany. With our iron chariots. Iron chariots have been defeating gods for ten thousand years.
@@Arkloyd Well, Hitler had the catholic churh beside him .................
"Well, that's like your opinion man."
The chance of him having read any other religious texts is so low that it's actually in the negatives.
I find it weird that the hosts often say, “call back in with your top 5 specific evidence etc etc”, when they know that it will never happen.
I’d say to this guy, “well you gave it your best shot and you didn’t convince us, but thanks for trying”
If every time you are asked why you believe and you respond with "i believe" then you lack the ability to participate in a debate.
Every episode Katy is in i fall more in love 😭💀
I belive it's true because I believe.....
Now I'm convinced! 🤦♂
"I have a thousand reason why I believe the bible is true!" Well... I have a quadrillion reasons for why the bible is not true. Top that!
Is "my dad can beat your dad" still a thing? Because the basis of his "inhuman" argument was that no one does it.
What's really odd is that none of the callers to any of these shows seem to ever have watched any of them before... decade after decade they come along with the same, extremely dull and blunt, uninspired non- arguments. The un awareness is baffling...
Retcon reasoning when there wasn’t reasoning to begin with. To change the world to match your ideology never works because you can't change reality. This is why enlightenment happened, and we began changing our ideas based on how the world actually is...
plenty of religions had sun, moon, ocean, or animal gods before the bible came along. and god is absolutely based on a man, and was made in our image, and has human qualities like rage, pettiness, poor communication skills
The Bible and Christianity are mythologies as the Greek or Hindu creations myths. I like the Greek myths because they are more beautiful and colorful.
I believe, I claim, I believe, I claim……….
Claiming that it's more likely that a god wrote the bible than humans is a wild claim considering we have tens upon thousands of examples of humans writing books and stories and exactly zero examples of literally anything else doing so UNLESS we specifically created and programmed it for that purpose. Does the caller understand the meaning of the word "likely" because how is something we've never had happen more likely than something we've seen a billion times?
A book full of wacky stories , and people still organize their lives around it. SMH…
Nobody change this guy. He’s perfect hahahaha hopefully his kids are just like him
The caller is spinning his wheels... he says he believes the Bible is true, but when asked WHY he believes that, he offers nothing but to repeat that he believes it.
Ron: there are dozens of...
There's 101 reasons....
There's a thousand examples...
Me: well next time, bring a few that don't fail or suck. K? K thx.
Obviously the arguments presented did not support the point even if accepted as truthful or plausible, but worse than that, they were actually easily refutable if only this person had analyzed other writings with the same zeal with which he analyzed the Bible. Knowledge of the God Ra would have been useful, where the Egyptians for the first time in recorded history tried to transform a polytheistic religion into a monotheistic one. Even more useful is the knowledge of Mithraism and Zoroaster (Zarathushtra) because in a religion which, even if very marginally, is still practiced but which precedes the writing of the thorah we find references copied liberally into the Bible itself.
Most mythology starts with creation, not humans in the first sentence. Marduk slew tiamat and her body became the world. No people. The Enuma Elish (also known as The Seven Tablets of Creation) starts with Marduk bringing order to chaos and making the world.
I don’t think the indigenous people of the Americas would all agree that the Bible’s effects on them were positive. Conquistadors weren’t using gentle persuasion to convert them.
They argue that the Bible is true because it doesn’t start with Man as the focus.
Fine.
Christianity started in the New Testament and is wholly focussed on Man. By his own criteria that rules out Christianity as real.
He should read Francesca Stavrokoupoulu’s book on the body of god.
(Thanks to Ricky Gervais). According to the Bible, God created the Earth and heavens, and AFTER that, he said “Let there be light!” So, He created everything IN THE DARK! That’s impressive. Then he called the light day and the dark night. And the evening and morning were the first day. Also, He didn’t create the stars, Sun and Moon until the fourth day, so where did all that light come from? And He created all of the plant life on the third day, before the sun, so how did vegetation begin without photosynthesis? Also, how did they measure days before there was a sun? People actually believe this $#!+ ?
Ron: Well I have a thousand and one reasons to think the Bible is true.
Katy: Excellent! Give us your best one.
Ron: Well I believe that the Bible is so great.
Count me a hardened hearted cynical atheist, but this is laughable.
Yahweh, Eli, Ashtera were hebrew gods who were pretty similar to ”human gods” described by this caller. And Ahura Mazda is older than the god of the bible, so he is ignorantm
The technologies of ancient peoples are not more advanced than what we have and use today. To me, it seem we need religion less and less.
Pretty sure i heard Paulogia respond to a similar postulation from a caller, where he responded with an older religion who started their creation story the same way, and in a similar fashion.
Ronny answers the question of belief in stories with more stories. WAD!
Zoroastrianism is the oldest monotheistic religion.
Also, bringing up the cousin kept in the basement, there is quite a bit of evidence Judaism was originally polytheistic. In my opinion, to the level where you disbelieve you are stuffing your ears with wax and refusing the siren song of reason.
caller offered a platter of brainwashing, conspiracy and ignorance. waste of time if not a horrible example to avoid.
There are flying snake gods in other religions, and there are plenty of stories of human folly across the world, both mythic and more realistic. It is not a crazy claim to say humans are flawed. Hell we have a saying that is about human fallibility "I'm only human."
I like Ronny…he’s silly 😜!
Religion has shaped the world.
Like a plate.
If believers does not care enough about their beliefs, as to be able to give ONE reason for, but claims instead that there are "many", "much", or "oodles"; why should I care?
A book cannot contain truth. At best, a book can point the way to truth.
Anything relating to science in the bible is if its time and most proved to be incorrect.
That sounds more like the writings of humans not a god that created the universe.
I feel sorry for Ron. This was just utterly embarrassing to listen to.
I think Ron forgot to take his meds for the last week or so...
Yes, Christianity has caused most of the human caused suffering in this world. It's shaped it horribly.
A book so wise it recommends a ritual with bird blood as a cure for leprosy sure couldn't be writen by humans! /sarcasm
So many religious arguments argue what's the bible or god is not when we asking what it is.
I cant believe the man exists.
Ron, have you ever heard of Zoroastrianism?
Simarillion is better.
'My god says we're its chosen people' - is it even questionable that humans write such things?
Talking donkeys are 100% believable, i guess.
One believes an eye for an eye. The other believes in turning the other cheek.
Both believe slavery is moral
Both are wrong concepts of justice .
"One believes an eye for an eye. The other believes in turning the other cheek."
That's the thing about the Bible - if you look at it like a TV series. Series 1 - ratings fell off because the main character was a psychopathic tyrant and people didn't warm to him. So for Series 2 - they rewrote the main character as a strong willed pacifist, a sandal wearing "heal the sick" kind of guy who would also kick over tables. He played by his own rules. That also didn't wash with the viewers who thought the character wasn't fully developed, so they killed him off mid-series and replaced him with a new character, Paul - the letter writing bigot.
You turn the other cheek to let them get at the other eye.
This guy should read more books. The Bible is very human.
Theist lose every argument. They sound so clueless. They should be embarrassed.
"Evidence' in Ron's world is just confirmation bias. No different than when he prays and regardless of the outcome, dogma spins it as confirmation that prayer works.
Ron still believes in the tooth fairy no doubt, its just as plausible as his other beliefs.
The Norse creation myth had a frost giant and his cow waking up the gods frozen in ice by licking them. When they woke up they killed the giant and created the world from his bones. Humans didn't come along until later. There you go, another religion where people weren't in the first part of the story.
Jesus promised the end of bad men, Odin promised the end of all ice giants. Don't see many ice giants...
@AnishSamanta-hy6iv God did NOT make humans... stop deluding yourself. Unless you can PROVE god exists... can you? If you start by pointing to the bible, it's a book, written by men, it is a claim it is not the evidence. I do NOT believe god exists and the bible is an evil book.
This call was a mess. The hosts should have ended it when he failed to back up any of his claims instead wasting 21 minutes of our lives. Wtf
So his argument is "i really Really believe, so i am correct, and i had a teachet so i am better than others"
his ego is just staggering..... he gave Zero proof of course....
Humans could not have written those words without God - WHYNOT ?
Why would a god give him a book that was so easy to misinterpret and that he had to find the right "scholars" before he could understand it? What if he never found those scholars?
I don't really understand the callers logic. I can't think of any religion, dead or existing, that started with humans.
The common thread here is that people (that call in at least) are terrible at listening, and answering questions honestly and succinctly. But man they are fantastic at misdirection, exaggeration, verbosity and general dishonesty. The irony is palpable.
Why would god tell his followers the wrong order how our universe came together
So a talking serpent is true?
The book of Matthew, inspired the idea of socialism. Read it and tell me I am wrong.
Why did jesus cross the road?
He didn't. He rode the cross.
