    Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

    When this caller says Christianity shaped western civilization, he is absolutely wrong. We abolished slavery, we have given women equal rights, we don’t stone children because they call somebody Baldi, etc.… So this caller is delusional and arrogantly ignorant.

    • @jeanhind8198
      @jeanhind8198 18 дней назад +8

      Christianity certainly DID shape Western civilisation, in many ways - it was at the forefront of education, forming early schools and universities, it has influenced art and architecture down many centuries and it's teachings have formed the basis of laws in many countries. It's also caused wars and has been picked over and adapted as societies have evolved, so you're right to point out that we don't follow the Christian bible to the letter, never have done. Ron, the caller, doesn't admit that at all..

    • @johnsperry9494
      @johnsperry9494 18 дней назад +4

      Back in “Biblical times,” slavery was OK, subjugation of women was OK, stoning to death of Gays was OK. Since then, mostly over the past 100 years, we have progressed beyond those beliefs. That’s progress for the human race. Question is, did that progress come from religion or the secular world? The answer is obvious. Progress in human rights happened not because of religion, but in spite of it. The same can be said for technology, or ANY kind of progress.

    Just because you place a god concept outside of existence itself, doesn't change the `human like` qualities it's being given. It's referred to as a father figure with he/him pronouns. It apparently feels things like regret, jealousy, anger, etc. It supposedly was here on Earth for awhile, as a human male. We are supposedly "created in its image." The only real difference between putting it on top of some mountain somewhere, is that `outside of existence` itself, makes those qualities inexplicable nonsense.

    Obviously the arguments presented did not support the point even if accepted as truthful or plausible, but worse than that, they were actually easily refutable if only this person had analyzed other writings with the same zeal with which he analyzed the Bible. Knowledge of the God Ra would have been useful, where the Egyptians for the first time in recorded history tried to transform a polytheistic religion into a monotheistic one. Even more useful is the knowledge of Mithraism and Zoroaster (Zarathushtra) because in a religion which, even if very marginally, is still practiced but which precedes the writing of the thorah we find references copied liberally into the Bible itself.

Then he called the light day and the dark night. And the evening and morning were the first day. Also, He didn’t create the stars, Sun and Moon until the fourth day, so where did all that light come from? And He created all of the plant life on the third day, before the sun, so how did vegetation begin without photosynthesis? Also, how did they measure days before there was a sun? Also, bringing up the cousin kept in the basement, there is quite a bit of evidence Judaism was originally polytheistic. In my opinion, to the level where you disbelieve you are stuffing your ears with wax and refusing the siren song of reason.

    There are flying snake gods in other religions, and there are plenty of stories of human folly across the world, both mythic and more realistic. It is not a crazy claim to say humans are flawed. Hell we have a saying that is about human fallibility "I'm only human."

      "One believes an eye for an eye. The other believes in turning the other cheek."
      That's the thing about the Bible - if you look at it like a TV series. Series 1 - ratings fell off because the main character was a psychopathic tyrant and people didn't warm to him. So for Series 2 - they rewrote the main character as a strong willed pacifist, a sandal wearing "heal the sick" kind of guy who would also kick over tables. He played by his own rules. That also didn't wash with the viewers who thought the character wasn't fully developed, so they killed him off mid-series and replaced him with a new character, Paul - the letter writing bigot.

    The Norse creation myth had a frost giant and his cow waking up the gods frozen in ice by licking them. When they woke up they killed the giant and created the world from his bones. Humans didn't come along until later. There you go, another religion where people weren't in the first part of the story.
