    I`m British and worked in a land rover , Range rover dealer as a mechanic for 8 years, they are by far the most unreliable cars i have ever worked on. I know of several customers that had range rovers that spend 90% of the time in the garage getting fixed and had to own another car just to be able to get about.

    • @TheRealEmile
      @TheRealEmile 8 лет назад +25

      Ironically American cars over here in England don't have great reputations, the Chevrolet Cruze for example is considered one of the worst cars currently on sale.

    • @giff74
      @giff74 8 лет назад +22

      +The Real Emile I totally understand what you are saying, the US car makers have made their share of absolute junk. I think the difference is the amount you are paying for the repairs. For what his warranty has paid on the Rover you could buy a Cruze. LOL!!!!
      I suppose this is why so many of us end up driving Honda's and Toyota's!!!!

    • @TheRealEmile
      @TheRealEmile 8 лет назад +6

      +giff74 Yeah true even in the UK those cars are super expensive to repair! I think that's the thing with car makers and countries if you make one mistake it can seriously affect you like with Lancia in the 80's or with French cars in the US!

    Range Rover (L322) was wholly designed by BMW and commenced production whilst Land Rover was under BMW ownership. Ford later purchased Land Rover from BMW in 2000.
    L322 was a massive leap forward in terms of design, manufacturing and engineering capability but unfortunately the Land Rover v BMW divorce was a messy affair as when Ford took ownership L322 R&D was near production readiness and not complete.
    As 99% of L322 R&D was undertaken by BMW engineers in Germany when Ford took ownership of Land Rover an agreement with BMW was agreed as part of the sale for BMW engineers to work alongside Land Rover engineers during the post 12 month sale transition. Unfortunately BMW were not going to reveal their engineering blueprints to a company they had just sold as some of those blueprints were scheduled to be shared in future BMW models, and as Ford did not undertake competent due diligence during the purchase of Land Rover the end result was Ford inheriting what was on paper a world beating premium 4x4 but turned out to be an engineered lemon that was plagued from the outset with production, electrical and other quality problems, issues that were in essence due to the complex engineering of L322 to which Land Rover engineers were left to bring a car to market to which they had very little input, knowledge or understanding, especially within the complex electrical architecture.

    • @HIGHLANDER_ONLY_ONE
      @HIGHLANDER_ONLY_ONE 4 года назад +2

      However, Land Rover always had electrical issues. I had a Discovery HSE year 2000, and in 2007 I took my teenage daughter, a toddler and a baby for a ride in a secluded place in the mountains, to look at a vacation cabin we wanted to buy. When I arrived home, the car stopped working - it just stopped! That was the only time I had any issues with my car. I loved that car, it was strong, and could pull our trailer my husband's 4 WD truck couldn't. However as a mother, I was scared, since where I was with my children, we didn't have any phone connection, and no one lived close for 30 miles or more!
      My point however is, that Land Rovers always had electrical issues, and I've heard that from other owners, a long time before Ford bought the company.
      Hen other times I read of the Defender driving all over thre African continent, and they're doing fine. In addition ay my kids' schools I think 1/4th of parents drive a LR of some sort, and I NEVER see them in other cars, nor dealer loaners. I'm perplexed, because I'm contemplating buying a RR HSE tomorrow. Wish me luck! 😊

And the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and every day for a good 4 weeks until I replaced the ignition switch, column, starter, relay, wiring, battery, alternator, and half the dash wiring, then I gave up and stopped driving it.

      +dan87951 Because until the full fat Range Rover was updated in 2013 and the Range Rover Sport in 2014, they were a mis-mash of Ford, BMW, and OG Rover parts that never really worked well together. The new ones are night and day, reliability-wise.

    • @DIYDanCars
      @DIYDanCars 8 лет назад +9

      +Devin Black If you had enough money you can take any car to 229,000 miles regardless of how "reliable" it is. It boils down to what you're willing to spend to keep it running. Our 2000 BMW 740IL that we bought when it was only 5 years old was absolute rubbish. By 70k miles the whole front suspension was worn, had been through 2 alternators, numerous CAM position/MAF sensors, 3 radiators, 2 coolant over flow tanks and the list goes on and on. Friends of mine have had similar problems with their 3 and 5 series. The local dealer flat beds my neighbors 5 series at least once a month for repairs. You may have had a better experience but I will never touch another BMW because of what we experienced!

    I think they have improved a lot since Ford bought them. I've got a Discovery 3 with 200,000k's on it.
    I bought it because it got great fuel consumption but when I factor in repairing it my Nissan Patrol GU TD42 is actually cheaper to run. Having said that the Disco is way faster, handles better and is safer for my family. Would I take it 4x4ing? Hell no! It'd end up costing me more money.
    Would I buy a Range Rover? Not unless you can afford a new one which has a warranty. Then sell it after the warranty runs out. So no I wouldn't.
    To be honest though a lot of new Toyota's and Nissan's are having troubles over here. I tend to think if you want reliability you need to go old school sometimes. Nobody make's them like they used to.

    Doug great video of this car. I too had come to a conclusion about Paid for additional warranties. I drove Chrysler's ! The worst was my 1989 Chrysler Landua. The car was a great road car even in the Winter. This car went through 6 transmissions and too many parts to bother detailing. The engine (Mitsubishi crap) blew up on our worst road in the hottest day of the year 98 degrees. My car insurance cost paid for itself more than twice. I finally quit Chrysler and bought a Subaru Forester with extra Paid for Insurance thank heavens We got that. .

    Hey Doug. Wondering in this 11th hour probably like soo many others in the market for one of these marvelous works of art and others like it, with the means to purchase and enjoy them, but maybe not exactly wanting to shoulder the financial burden of repairing them as often as you experienced in our ownership. What would you say were the warranty company offerings on the market today that most reasonably resemble the Car Max warranty experience that you possessed on your truck my friend? There are quite a few, I'm aware. I just thought that maybe you may have some inside knowledge on who's the best to go with for foreign offerings like the Range. Thanks much again and please do keep the videos, information, articles and knowledge coming. Roddy. Cheers!! 🍻

      Cory Curtis It's like the phrase "preventative maintenance" are foreign to him. A truck like this doesn't just run and run like an economy car. Change all your fluids/filters. If your shocks/struts are blowing, find out why. Check your filter/air lines/compressor and make sure everything is flowing properly. Put a new battery, then see if the electronics act up. These kind of cars, like all modern vehicles are heavily computer-laden and very sensitive to a low/weak battery. Another thing is, things do break. Factor that into the budget when buying one. He should understand that and stop bitching about the small things.
