I lost my gallbladder on atkins/keto. It was impacted into my liver and I arrived septic to the ER. 7 hour surgery - required an Emergency Assist Surgeon. Dr said it was the 2nd worst he’d seen in 15 years. He told me the keto diet paid his bills as 95% of his patients followed that way of eating. Upon my discharge he said, “Go enjoy a bowl of oatmeal and some fruit..” Took me 6 months to recover from that surgery. Starch based now. Feel phenomenal. Bloodwork is perfect. BP is 117/76 after being in the 180’s/110’s the entire time I ate keto/atkins/low carb. I do miss feta cheese on my salad and cream cheese on my bagel but -- never again.

Lost a bunch of weight but could NOT for the life of me think straight. Went crazy, developed anorexia, and later that year accidentally saw slaughter house footage. Immediately went vegan and over time it recovered me bc I wanted to be a good example for veganism. My dad ended up in the hospital for his heart and I got him on veganism too. I tried doing a vegan keto diet recently (i'm already vegetarian / mostly vegan) and let me say I got so sick! I'm currently having to go get medical tests and bloodwork because my body has been in shock since this all started. I also have hypothyroidism (caused by cancer treatments) and the diet may have harmed my thyroid. I have severe hypothyroidism symptoms now despite being medicated. Keto might work for some people but it certainly can be harmful to others. I guess the take-home point here is to consult your doctor before doing any new diet - especially very restrictive ones. I followed the rules and tracked all my food with keto - did a ton of research before starting but I never consulted my doctor and now my body and my health are paying for it dearly.I felt great for about 3 days and then I started feeling progressively worse - not just keto flu but detrimentally sick. I missed 2 days of work and had horrible insomnia too. Started feeling hypoglycaemic - the list goes on. I won't be going on keto again - I almost ended up in hospital.

I tried keto for about a month. Not only did I gain weight from it, but all the meat and fats gave me horrid heartburn and indigestion, plus terrible brain fog. And I felt like I was starving all the time even after downing an entire plate of meat. Ultimately, the keto diet backfired big-time because it made me hate the meat I'd previously loved all my life. Now I've been vegan for almost 3 weeks and I barely ever get hunger pains anymore at all. Plus I've already lost a few pounds around the middle because I've swapped plates of carcass for bowls of salad.

keto saved my life. when I was 17 I had a bmi of 45, was prediabetic, and was told that I would be the youngest person my doctor would have to put on heart medication. after several months of keto and kicking my ass at the gym I was 100 lbs lighter and the next year I rode a bicycle 4600 miles across the USA to raise money for young adults affected by cancer. I'm not on keto right now because long term doesn't make me feel good and may be unhealthy but there is no doubt that I would be much closer to dying if I hadn't tried it. 15% of keto children had enlarged.. article:
"Twenty patients on the ketogenic diet at one institution were investigated. Prolonged QT interval (QTc) was found in 3 patients (15%)" - It's easy to make 15% sound like a big number before you reveal it was 3 persons.
Sudden cardiac death is keto diet article:
Not available anymore... could not find the article.
GI disturbances, low blood protein keto diet article:
"The KD is a safe and efficacious therapy for intractable childhood epilepsy in Chinese children" - The article is positive regarding the diet
Study with large list of adverse effects, deficiency article:
This is a study on treating epilepsy, children with complications and illness. Any diet on sick patients will have adverse effects.
    More adverse effects article:
Still only regarding experiments to treat epilepsy.. you cannot just read keto articles on sick kids... really?
Higher Cortisol on Keto Diet Study article:
"During the run-in phase, we obtained baseline data for study outcomes, restricted energy intake of participants to achieve a 12.5% decrease in body weigh" - Now if you restrict the calorie intake, you're not doing keto.
Keto equal to other low carb diet in weight loss, adverse effects article:
Just saying that keto isnt more weight loss than medium low-carb. This compares weight loss in low carb vs low carb. Really?
Low Carb Diets Increase All Cause Mortality article:
"Our meta-analysis supported long-term harm and no cardio-vascular protection with low-carbohydrate diets. However, theobservational studies were limited and moderately heterogeneous. Our findings underscore the imminent need for large-scale trialson the complex interactions between low-carbohydrate diets andlong-term outcomes." - Well they are basically saying their findings are not enough to be trusted.

Hey thanks for the comment! I think in retrospect, I should have eaten more vegetables, but I was scared to go over 20g net carbs a day, sometimes I'd go as high as 50g though. I ate a lot of nuts, and I mean a lot! So I thought with that fiber along with a tomato, some leafy green salad and a serving of cruciferous vegetables I would be okay, but it just didn't work out that way, I ended up getting very VERY high uric acid and pains in my knees. There was actually one week were I only ate meat, which was surprisingly easy. I would advise anyone on the keto diet to avoid burning their cheese (which is supposed to be really bad for you, i.e grilling), stick to boiling their meat, and try to get 30-50g fiber a day anyway you can. I think if I did that my cholesterol and uric acid would not have been so terrible. Good luck and stay open minded on your path to health!

I have read through maybe half of the articles provided. I have a bachelors degree in kinesiology (the scientific study of human motion, and it's systems). I have been following a very low carbohydrate diet for 4 years now, breaking it every Christmas season to eat holidays meals with loved ones. Here are my thoughts, briefly summarized.
Many of these articles are specific to epileptic children. Any results from these studies CANNOT be applied to the general public, whose anatomy and physiology is not the same. The fact most do not describe what specifically is being fed to the patients is problematic. They claim nutritional deficiencies, and then fail to describe what the nutrient profile of their patient's diets. Keto diets especially come in many drastically different forms and cannot be all lumped into one category. On top of that, the trials appeared to be on the small end, with successful results in terms of reduced seizures. So definitely a route worth examining in greater detail still.
Cholesterol is it's own rabbit hole. No research supports the idea that LDL cholesterol correlates with heart disease at all. The recently discovered sub-fractions of LDL cholesterol (by Krauss in the 1980's) is a promising line of research exonerating the effect of saturates on LDL cholesterol, which makes the total amount of LDL measured in the blood immaterial in terms of CVD risk. But HDL cholesterol has been shown to be far more strongly correlated anyway, so is worth more attention than LDL cholesterol. But this fact has been strangely ignored by the mainstream research community for no apparent reason. Look up Krauss's work on LDL cholesterol, it's quite fascinating.

It goes into depth on cholesterol. 4 years ago I was also convinced on the keto diet, so it’s very possible you’ve changed your mind. This is a joke. The internet is filled with people pushing their own nutrition dogma, which is one of the biggest problems in following any nutrition advice. Often times the "guru" pushes what works best for them and people automatically assume they can achieve the same results when in fact everyone responds differently. The point is, some people will excel on a ketogenic diet while others will not. The serious folks who look at science and have extensive clinical experience will say that right away.
I'll just make two points from the first two minutes of your video which highlight your misunderstanding (and many others) about a ketogenic type diet.
1:10 - "meat, oil, dairy, eggs, and a few plants on the side". I've been following a ketogenic diet for over a year now and 2/3rd of my plate by volume is vegetables, 75% of which is leafy greens and fermented cabbage, typically at least 1 avocado a day as well. The point is, many people can make the mistake of not eating enough plant materials. That's the same for any diet.
1:13 - "just one banana would put you over your carb limit". Again, it's highly individualized. I can tolerate 50 - 70 grams daily of carbohydrates and still remain in a state of ketosis. Some people will need to be as low as 20 grams. I eat berries, citrus, and other seasonal fruits. I have no problem eating a banana, but would rather have the former.
I could go on and on, but I'm not going to waste any more time here. It's great that you know what works best for you, but there is a ton of valid information and science out there about the benefits of a ketogenic diet as it relates to health, athletic performance, and weight loss. But it's not for everyone. One of the best resources is "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" and "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance".
Don't be a fool and think that you've got it figured out. I get blood work done regularly and have seen tremendous benefits from a ketogenic diet, but like anything, you need to be informed about it and learn from your mistakes. One of the biggest mistakes for people starting out on a ketogenic diet (the phase that we call keto adaptation) is monitoring sodium levels and making sure to eat plenty of plants. Some of the benefits I've gotten from a ketogenic diet: increased athletic performance, fat loss (I'm below 10% body fat), increased mental focus/memory, lack of hunger cravings, and the list goes on.

My ketone levels were high but I didnt feel the boost that people claim. I started the keto diet after a 3 day no food fast, and while that was hard at the beginning, one the 2nd day I wasnt having hunger pains and I had never felt so good in all my life. During the fast my ketones spiked up and my dark circles around my eyes disappeared and my skin looked flawless. I was standing up straight and tall and life felt effortless. I thought keto was a hack diet but thought it might extend this feeling. See my fast ended when I was making my daughter a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and by habit I licked the spoon which caused my hunger pains to return and I couldnt at that point resist eating. They put me on medications that I stopped taking within weeks, there was no need for them after I found out about the ketogenic diet. I went low carb high fat and within a few days my blood sugar was in the normal range for a non diabetic, I had blood work done in April, My A1C dropped to 6 and next time it'll likely be in the low 5 to mid 4 range. My triglycerides dropped 50 points, my total cholesterol dropped 20 points but was already in the normal range, HDL and LDL stayed the same but those were normal anyway. I did this eating bacon, eggs, steaks, butter, heavy cream, full fat cheese and chicken with the skin on. I also eat a large serving of vegetables with butter at dinner and an avocado with lunch. Even right after a large meal my blood glucose never goes over 110 and after 2 hours it's always back in the 80's. I have also lost 80lbs in just over 3 months without doing any extra exercise, when your body has to use the fat for fuel it will burn off pretty quickly, when you load up on carbs your body can't get to the fat burning because the carbs will burn first. As far as people who are vegans you do what you like I have no problem with that, but PLEASE stop coming up with these BS videos to try to convert people, you are doing a disservice to other people's health.

If people are not sure what to believe, why not just try both the keto diet and a vegan diet? See for yourself what happens to your body.
    Here is my story:
After 3 years of being vegan, I started drifting away and started eating dairy again for 1 year. I put on 20 pounds from being vegetarian and then I decided that was enough. I went back to vegan and decided to try the keto diet (vegan) to lose some weight. I have to say that there are crazy changes to my body, both good and bad.
    Good:
    - I have been losing weight (around 4 pounds per week)
    - I wake up more easily, less groggy
    - I don't feel hungry all the time
    Bad:
    - I get blackouts from super low blood pressure, which means just getting up from a chair makes me dizzy
    - my sleep is now broken (I researched and that's a common thing on keto)
    - I start to shake sometimes due to hypoglycemia
    - I have no energy to do sports or run with my dog
    - my boyfriend who is doing the same diet has a mild headache every day
    - THE FOOD IS SO EXPENSIVE! Like imagine buying tons of nuts, almond butter, almond or cashew milk, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, spirulina, almond flour bread, full fat coconut milk, tea, lá croix, eurythol, unsweetened dark chocolate.... Dude, I'm not kidding I'm spending around $30-50/day plus 2 hours prep time.
    - Plus you can't eat anything ready made out because the choices are super limited.
So, I'm doing this because I want to see for myself if this really works. Some people say you get more energy, and I want to give it more time to see if that happens to me, but after 2 months, I have no plans on continuing with this mostly due to the increased amount of fat going to my arteries and and how expensive and non practical it is to find food.
I donate blood regularly and I will be compring my results from previous times I've donated when I was full vegan and when I was vegetarian.

Are you pre diabetic? You should also add sea salt to your water or milk. As keto can cause you to flush out the minerals from your kidneys. Keep in mind that mineral loss will be more substantial if you are consuming stuff that contributes to leeching the minerals out of your body like coffee. And the bread nuts and flour are not helping you at all since they also contribute to leeching minerals out of your bones and teeth. Nothing wrong with having it. As long as it's not part of what you eat everyday.

I noticed your channel bashes the ketogenic diet quite a bit. Let me explain my situation and why that diet works for me. During 1999 in Kuwait something happened that made my thyroid produce at the level of a 99 year old person. I think it was radiation since I was around that, but something changed when I got back. After 10 years of weight gain I went from 173 to 305. It has been hell to get the weight off over the years and I've had the opinion of a lot of doctors along the way. I developed type two diabetes about five years ago and have struggled with that a lot. I tried doing the vegan diet, but any grain products I ate would spike my blood sugar. Wheat was by far the worst, but the normal other grains always created a response. My dad went on the keto diet and has been eating that way for over two years. He lost 80 pounds the first year and stopped taking all medications. I figured that may help me so I tried it. I did it for three months and it made a world of difference. All my blood sugars stayed in the normal range without medication. My lipid panels all returned to normal ranges. The diet is hard to stay on for me. Vegan was even worse for me. I returned back to the normal diet trying to be more health conscious, but eventually my A1C went back to 14 and I started back on the insulin which really makes things worse. By diet and exercise changes I was able to get it back to around 8 but while taking two oral medications. I told the doctors I'd never take insulin again because of the weight gain that comes with it. So I came to a choice of either taking medications the rest of my life or going back on the keto diet. The whole problem with diabetes is being carb intolerant. If people are lactose intolerant, they cut out the lactose products. Being carb intolerant, it only makes sense to remove the carbohydrates from the diet. After two weeks of being back on the keto diet my blood sugars are normal again without the medications. I suppose if I did vegan without doing grains it would have a similar effect, but eating that way is very difficult for me. I'm definitely not knocking being vegan, but you should tone down the keto bashing because it does work for some of us out here with diabetes. I bought some cook books this time around for keto recipes and it's opened up a whole new world for me. I have made some tasty items using mainly almond flour that are low in carbs and high in fat/protein. If I want to remove the diabetes as a health factor and get off the medications, this is really the only choice I have that I can stick with for the rest of my life.

Omega 3 ALA is only converted around 1 percent to DHA/EPA. Keto never requires any supplementation for their diet. Think about that.

Furthermore, most of the proponents of the keto diet are either ignorant or they fabricate evidence. Inuit do not live in ketosis, they have genetic mutations in the CPT1A gene that allow them to burn long-chain fatty acids directly (as do some Caucasians, which is why not everybody actually enters ketosis on the usual "keto diet").

@@Magnulus76 i have been on Paleo prior to keto. I never take drugs as I also hate anything processed and unnatural. I doubt Sarah followed a actual paleo diet. She seems like a fraud. Sarah's claims that keto has drug like effects is nonsense. There is actual science explaining the different metabolic pathways utilized for ketones vs glucose. The body using fat as fuel is very good in terms of health. Having low insulin most of the time is optiminal for health as advanced glycation end products thrive in the body when insulin is high. Viruses also feed off glucose. Ketones have many better effects for health than glucose. In fact the body considers excess glucose toxic. It immediately tries to get it out of the blood stream after 4 grams. That's why it spikes insulin and starts the process of de novo lipogenesis turning it into fat.
The only downside to keto is that you won't have any fat stores so if you go on a long period of fasting. The body will start feeding off muscles. However in modern society. You never need to fast for a long time as you always have access to food. I fast once in a while to reap the benefits of autophagy and growth hormone spikes. I will never fast more than 24 hrs.
I believe everyone can enter ketosis. When you don't eat any food. Your body will be forced to enter ketosis targeting your own fat storage. The inuit have probably entered ketosis more frequently than other ethnic groups which is why their utilization of fats is more efficient. That is a good thing. Look up the story of Angus Barbieri

43 seconds in and you are already wrong about how ketosis works :(
A few of the studies you researched are with diets containing processed meats. I will not argue with you, they do cause harm. THAT BEING SAID meaningful correlations can be found by lowering inflammation through a proper keto diet. This will lower blood glucose and reduce LDL oxidisation.
Processed meats are bad - agreed
Other studies you cited: The dangers of saturated fat are real WHEN PRESENT IN THE BLOOD STREAM what causes this you ask? Insulin. Produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar.
Saturated fat in the diet while in ketosis with *no insulin* present in the bloodstream does not cause heart problems and is shown since the 20's to lower risk.
Saturated fats are bad - agreed (when eating carbs as well)
This is documented well. It is crucial to differentiate the studies based on those who are observed eating high fat and *low carbs* with those eating healthy fats and *no carbs * (aka no insulin production) there are huge differences and both were labelled as "keto" in this video. Please do not clump together results to make it fit your youtube channel.
Don't simplify such a complicated subjects. When executed properly this diet can be used to save lives of insulin sensitive people.

I was seriously addicted to sugar having grown up in a family where sugar was a part of nearly everything we ate. We drank sodas, sweet tea, and gallons of Kool-Aid loaded with multiple cups of sugar per gallon. Both my mom and dad were expert cooks and bakers so there was no shortage of sweets at any time. I was never fat but my health began to turn for the worse after I turned 50 (currently 63). Since beginning a Keto diet I no longer eat or have cravings for sugar. My diet consists of tons of vegetables, moderate fats and protein, and low carbs. I eat one sometimes two meals per day then fast for at least 18 hours before the next cycle of meals. I only drink lemon water, tea, and coffee all unsweetened and I DON'T SNACK. My health has improved greatly since I started and I have no problems sticking to the diet because I no longer have cravings for anything sweet. My goal was not so much to lose weight (even though I did), but to wean myself from sugar which I did. The diet I'm on is touted as a "Healthy" Keto diet which implies there are unhealthy Keto diets. So even though the diet works for me, I do understand the reason for concern. Keto is great for losing weight but maybe it should not be used as a long term solution. One must use common sense based on knowledge and not just follow the Keto gurus. I think all diets must be tailored to the individual and no one knows you better than you. So just be careful, learn as much about the diet as possible and implement what works for you.

I cut sugars/grains/dairy/'bad fats'/alcohol/soy from my diet and replaced them with starchy vegetables, nuts, olive/coconut oil and coconut milk. Also i eat a shitton of vegetables, because that's what you do on a ketogenic diet. (Not just meat and fat)
Overall my body became lean and fit. I have more energy and my libido also was enhanced. I became less depressed and my skin got way better.

If you feel better than you have for a long time then I wouldn't let anyones rethoric deter you from what you are doing, be it the Keto Camp or the Vegan. The one thing that is missing from all of the Vegan / Keto discussions is the part that your individual Heritage and migration of your ancestral Paternal and Maternal Haplogroups play. I come from a family laden with Autoimmune disfunction and all of them have improved dramatically on the Ketogenic Diet - one of my sisters continues to eat Vegan on medical advice and is now looking down the barrel of a liver transplant (having been very active her whole life, not drank or abused her body whatsoever - only 37). I reviewed our Haplogroups, discovered we have 20000 years of Heritage on the British Isles, primarily Ireland. What was available year 'round to eat here? Cold weather vegetables, small amount of edible root weeds (dandelion for example) certain perrenial plants and berry bushes, meat and fish. I don't think eating 2lbs of steak every day is the way to go by any stretch as historically none of ancestors would have turned up food that was readily available, be it plant of animal based. Just keep going with what makes you feel good, occassionally come out of ketosis for periods to improve your metabolic flexibility (think seasonal eating of fruit for example) and enjoy your life. The medical industry is turning on to value of nutrition and I suspect the standard advice will cange in the future regarding the role of Cholesterol relative to heart disease

i tried a keto diet and within 4 days i was passing out and vomiting uncontrollably. i was sent to the hospital and had to stay hospitalized for an entire weekend because of how acidic my body had become. the doctors were literally scrambling around trying to make sure i didn't go into a coma or die. the doctor who took care of me told me told me it was directly because of ketosis, and told me how insane that diet was. he literally said "you know how people try that whole ketogenic diet? you're in ketosis, that's why you're sick - your body is starving" and one of the nurses exclaimed how glad she was i had come to the er, because another day and i may have been comatose. now when i see all these videos about the keto diet or see "keto" products in stores i just cringe because of how much damage this diet is doing to people. (sidenote: i have been on and off vegan and vegetarian my entire life and have no history of any serious diseases or disorders, no nutrient deficiencies, i'm at a healthy body weight for my age and gender, i exercise regularly, and have perfectly normal blood sugar and blood pressure. my hospitalization was entirely due to the diet, as was expressed by my doctor. i was otherwise a healthy 21 year old woman)

Rose Smith on keto half your plate should be greens/ veggies. Then 3 or ; oz of a meat and then something added to increase fat if the meat is lean. Sometimes it’s just a small slice of cheese. Way less than typical American diet and way more greens than typical too. Also you gotta keep electrolytes up and only drink water when you are thirsty. Don’t drink the milk as it’s loaded with carbs. Heavy cream is fine in coffee or a dessert as it’s zero carbs etc etc.

I doubt you were doing the keto diet correctly. I eould be curious to actually see the exact things you were eating. Also, it is not true you can go into ketoacidosis unless you're a type 1 diabetic, so the doctors you encountered were just fearmongering you. If you read this, please send me an example of the meals you would eat in a day when doing keto.

There's a right and a wrong way to do every diet and no 1 diet works for everyone. Cherry picked info to support your cause and nothing from Jeff Volek. The same can be done with the vegan diet but vegans are known to be closed minded and self righteous for their diet so people who blindly follow a youtuber without doing their own unbiased research is bound to remain ignorant.

I agree with your first point. I have to add, though, that there is no such thing as a 'vegan diet'. Veganism is simply the refusal to purchase or consume anything that comes from animals. A 'vegan diet' isn't really a thing. You get keto vegans, paleo vegans, high carb low fat vegans, whole food vegans, junk food vegans...
Some people do choose a plantbased diet for health and believe animal foods to be unhealthy. That's not what vegan means, though. I think Mic wasn't correct in comparing 'keto' to 'vegan' because to do so doesn't really make sense: You can be vegan and go into ketosis, and 'vegan' isn't a diet (although it is, in part, about what you eat).
      I hope that makes sense!

    • @ToasterTrain
      @ToasterTrain 7 лет назад +2

Agreed... I did a bit more research into the program I facilitate with a doctor (I focus on behavioural modification and he focusses on the nutritional science). The approach Mic is speaking of is INCREDIBLY extreme and not what a typical or average user of a ketogenic model would support. In fact, when done properly you can achieve ketosis while still eating 140 grams of green leafy veggies per day (measure that out, most people can't even eat that many in a day) as well as 6 servings (cups) of other veggies. It is also possible to be keto and vegan (in fact, I am and it's totally sustainable!). I love Mic's videos and will keep watching as I am only newly vegan but finding lots of options (i have not missed or craved meat even once.

    • @ToasterTrain
      @ToasterTrain 7 лет назад +2

I agree with you as well. I would also say that when done properly, Keto isn't a diet either. It's a term that is used to describe a state that the body goes into but it is also (in modern times) represented as a lifestyle, a choice in food, an attitude, and correct food behaviours. It's a fully sustainable model when applied correctly!

The problem with many of the studies I have seen on keto diet, especially that trials, are they feed such terrible food. When I switched my household over to keto we now drink veggies smoothies with yeast and wheat grass juice powder. We eat lots of veggies, cut out all the processes food and snack way way less. We are all feeling healthier, losing weight and getting more vitamins and minerals then ever before. Many of the side effects listed on the list in the beginning are things that happen on any poor diet. You can be vegan or vegetarian and still eat terrible because animal products are not the source ow what is bad in food. You can eat a version of keto and feel like crap if you don't eat veggies to get the vitamins and minerals you need.
Neither diet is bad but I found keto had advantages when it came to sustainability in our house and it helps with ADHD in the household.

For real. I tried both vegan and keto, and in the end, I am now only on Keto. I do eat more carb than the standard keto diet though. This vid is just bias. The main point of the ketogenic diet is that you can only eat for a short period of time during the day(for example, OMAD), and have less to do with what you eat every day. Obviously, eating too much fat will just gonna harm you, but that's not what the keto diet is about. Some people are on high carb Keto diet, some are on high protein Keto, some are on high fat Keto, and most people like me are on omnivore Keto. But being on Keto diet means you have to eat less frequently during the day. The Keto diet is the only thing that could help me burn fat and help me reduce the drug dosage for my autoimmune diseases. Pure Vegan, on the other hand, triggered my autoimmune conditions.

I'm on the Keto diet for about 3 years. I started it because of my tendency of overeating and my BMI got over 25. also my blood pressure was a little to high, not dramatic but but for maybe 20 years. (i'm now 66) and after having found good solid evidence for the keto-diet I gave it a shot. My blood pressure normalized within a week, my right hip and knee that are affected by Arthritis (from having 2 '' difference in leg-length) are no longer hurting (mainly from cereal). But what I had completely forgotten to monitor was my shoulders. Since having had a broken collarbone about 20 years ago I've had to sleep on the non effected side for 6 weeks and my other shoulder turned so hurtful during sleep that I had to avoid lying on that shoulder and so during sleep I always woke to turn around and lye on the other shoulder. I was so used to it that I didn't suffer from it and I accepted it as a fact of life. It only hurt when I lay on these shoulders but it didn't impair my movement otherwise. I was so used to the nightly pain that I didn't think of it anymore, but after a year or so I noticed that I didn't have any pain in my shoulders anymore. My weight was 83 kg at max and it automatically stabilized at 70 kg, nothing dramatic.
OK what is mainly wrong with many diet research is the epidemiological basis. It means that you can't identify causes and effect with correlation.
    see this vid:ruclips.net/video/M3zAQJtDIpo/видео.html
See also the arguments that are exchanged in a discussion between Eric Westman (head of Duke Obesity Clinic) who debunks the cancer from animal protein claim from T. Collin Campbell:
    ruclips.net/video/dIwEmgV8Wdg/видео.html
The problem is that there is so much misinformation going on that it is confusing to everyone.
You would think that an animal like a Gorilla has a true carb metabolism with mainly getting his energy from glucose (and other sugars). but you are in for a surprise: The fiber (cellulose) he gets from soft leaves and sprouts are not directly digestible but all soluble sugars actually go to his microbes that use it to turn fiber into saturated fat that is more than 80% of the energy the Gorilla uses. So this is a slow process and requires special bacteria that are "stored"in his extensive organ that is our appendix. This Gorilla is the only true vegetarian ape and he has the smallest brain with the lowest activity. He can;'t grow a larger brain as he doesn't have the protein or the (fat/Ketones) energy.
For cows something similar goes on but they are specialized in chewing grass and keep renewing teeth that are especially tough as grass contains silicates that are hard to chew before digestion. All ruminants have more or less the same base-plan and are able to mix in a lot of microbes during chewing so they get much more nourishment from the fibers, but they can't use the sugars either as the microbes eat it. So the fat in the milk is from the microbes ... If the microbes are killed by antibiotics a cow gets keto acidosis and dies very swift.
Our brains are 7 times larger than any apes and require 50 times the energy while our guts are less then 30% of the length. From veggies? Human brains have schrunck 11 % since agriculture (Egypt) but it allowed us to store large food reserves for many years to avoid famine. It was gradually introduced and got many small steps in getting more reliable and by the final step of pre digesting by yeast and baking it got really pretty reliable and an economic focus. Of course the nomadic herders were ridiculed and as they also threatened the crops of the settled farmers it was understandable that they were ridiculed. Those savages....
I do think of the animals, we protect them from the predators and reduce stress for these animals. I don't mind the killing as this is natural too. I do think it can be done a lot humaner so I buy ''bio" if I can get it.
I do think that it is possible to use the cow microbes to convert fiber into saturated fat for food without the cow but for now I accept that animals die for us. I also eat organ meat (mainly liver) when possible and it should be respected that no meat should go to waist.
If ketones instead of glucose is used to make ATP the mitochondria produce almost no oxidative materials that damage cells and their DNA and also mitochondrial DNA. this is the start of cancer The DNA damage is not the cause of cancer but the downstream effect of damaged mitochondria that force the affected cells to use fermentation (anaerobic metabolism of glucose) that is much more oxidative damaging and causes downstream of the anaerobic fermentation. This is the start of cancer. Cancer cells depend on glucose and starve when glucose is not abundant. As long as no metastasis are formed cancer cells dye when no glucose is available. When macrophages from our immune system are combating cancer cells they resort to internally digest them. sometimes this produces a chimer between the cancer cell and the macrophages. The normal macrophages can readily transport through the bloodstream but cancer is not like that. the cancer Chimera can now spread without detection. the macrophages can live on glucose but also on other amino-acids mainly glutamin. This is not easy to just avoid so metastasis are a lot harder to starve. See website of Thomas Seyfried:
A Novel Therapeutic Strategy For Metabolic Management of Cancer - Thomas Seyfried (June 2018)
    ruclips.net/video/APwnkpD_BfI/видео.html
I don't think a moral argument has any value for health.
It is true that many people are very divided over the issue and I try to stay away from that. Some opponents suppose there is a malicious aspect to the misinformation but that is not very productive: it is not possible to prove that without a confession and it clouds judgement to be mad about it. It is bad enough that people are so bad at recognizing the truth and seeing where they are in error.
For me the youtube introduction by Ivor Cummins to the subject of the cholesterol conundrum gives a method of reducing literature to only a few articles that can withstand scrutiny helps a lot at getting the important information.

What happens when you're on keto, you pee out more salt, this is why carb eaters are advised to eat less salt to avoid hypertension. It seems insulin makes kidney's retain salt because glucose needs compensation.

In this region licorice candy is very popular and it smells strongly in our supermarkets. It has been my main addiction and it also has a hypertension effect. Some herbal teas are laced with it. But everybody has there personal struggles. In 1976 I was quitting a daytime job and continuing schooling on a scholarship. This motivated me not to spend money on tobacco( or alcohol ) and I finally succeeded in stopping with smoking. It was the right time.
Staying on it is easy as I eat a lot less often and from day one I completely quit lunch. Often I eat an omelet w/o bread in the morning (2 eggs some fatty bacon and real butter. ) I don't use cheese as it caused 50 years of head-aces until I heard it could be the cause. The fattest meat is ground meat, especially pork or mixed contain more fat and less protein. Hamburger paddies, sausages, salami. I also love liver and I learned to appreciate it from childhood. Ground meat is cheap and mainly leftover from cuttings to remove fat from the expensive meats ( lipophobia ). Liver is hard to sell in these days and is mostly processed for its B12 and other supplements. I also tasted brain and would eat that, but because of a potential epidemic of BSE or Creuzfeld-Jacob it was banned and can't be purchased. Although the epidemic never materialized they never lifted the ban. I also had kidneys and that tasted good too.
I do eat leafy vegetables and some asparagus or broccoli or cauliflower and I have some high fat low sugar Greek yogurt.
Linseed-oil is so unstable because of the very numerous double bonds, that it was known by Egyptians that use it for mummification it produced soot on king tut's mummy.. Used for coating (Varnish) and painting it solidifies in a few days just by oxidation. Putty is linseed-oil with powdered chalk, if you apply a layer of this putty on a jut matting it becomes linoleum. And these plant based poly unsaturated fats are now widely used in foods. If from cooking with sunflower oil I get a splatter on my kitchen tiles or Stainless steel sink after wiping them off it turns out they are solidified and fixed. Soy-bean oil is no different, it can also catch fire in work-clothes from fast-food rest-s on it's way to the laundering firms. Olive oil was used by Romans to help with bulling hair from their body and for anti grip in wrestling and for oil-lamps, candles were very expensive. Now with Olive-oil it is half saturated fats ans half mono-unsaturated and only a small fraction poly unsaturated. I would maybe use that for unheated use like salads, but heating accelerates oxidation. The best stuff for heating and frying is animal fat tallow normally has more saturated fat then suet, but I prefer real butter for my frying.

I did a paleo/keto diet for 4 years. I was the leanest I had ever been in my life. Some of the major side effects were hair loss, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and best of all debilitating depression that took years to resolve.
These diets work until they don’t and tank your thyroid function while also depleting your liver of all its glycogen stores. Becoming so extremely sick made me do research and find out that the body actually runs on glucose and without it, it will convert everything you eat (including your internal organs) into glucose. The sad part about all this is that we live in a society that is obsessed with looks and most people will try anything to look and feel great including destroying their health. The true markers of health are:
    Sleep
    Hair, nails, skin
    Digestion
    Libido
    Mood (relaxed and calm)
If any of those are off it’s because of your poor dietary choices. It’s taken me over 4 years to recover from that nightmare and I’m still not 100%.

I think you just confused correlation with causation. You state your side effects included hair loss, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. How did you establish that these problems were caused by your keto diet? Also, exactly how did your alleged keto diet look like? I ask this question because I have encountered numerous cases of people who were allegedly doing keto but did not understand that keto requires over 60% of fat (if you reduce carbs, you need to increase fat). It would be interesting to see how you established this causation and what your meals looked like. With this information I might be more inclined to accept your statements as valid.

I can only speak to the wonderful results my wife and I have encountered with a low-carb (20-50 grams fat per day, not ketogenic) manner of eating. My wife reversed pre-diabetes and related skin, arthritis, and breathing difficulties, and lost significant weight. My short eight-week low carb adventure resulted in weight loss, vascular improvements in my mild edema-prone left leg, and significant improvements in mental clarity. I have maintained my fat adaptation and take bike rides of 50-100 miles with only water and no carbs and that is starting in the morning fully fasted. All of these benefits require that you give up most of the junk you have been mistakenly calling food. Removal of junk food can be a deal breaker for some.

"We consider diabetes reversed when someone achieves an A1c below 6.5%, without requiring diabetes medications other than metformin. Metformin is excluded from reversal criteria because it is not diabetes-specific-many patients choose to stay on this medication for reasons other than blood sugar control"
      "other than metformin" lol
I knew it's bad but this is so hilarious
anyway It's a bandaid at best
true reversal has only been showed by a caloric deficit diet and continue with low fat plant based diet

I have been vegan since 1982 .I 2010 I tried living on almonds and greens and fruit for One year .Eating mainly organic almonds and turnip greens for a year. I averaged 5/8 Lbs ( 283g) of oraganic almonds per day .I was moving , remodeling a house and farming and I did not have time to cook so I just ate the almonds and salads
after 1 year I suffered a heart attack . I did not get a stint .I knew it was form eating FAT .I gave up al;l fat except a spoonful of flax seed per day . And within a year I had no more heart pain and have never had any heart trouble ever since.

Personally I think both have positives. I think the main danger is having high carb and high fat/meat together like standard diets. But choosing one or the other seems to be positive for people, at least for weight loss purposes. Personally I prefer veganism for a variety of reasons; less chance of high blood pressure and cholesterol if you do it right and sensibly, I feel more energetic and more mentally alert when I eat carbs, I think it actually offers way more variety of food and flavours and I've plenty of options and I don't get bored with it, it is easier to sustain throughout a lifetime, it's better for the environment and of course the animals! Also I am a wee bit wary that many pro dairy and meat studies are funded by those industries

One can expect plant-based keto to yield better results, but the food choices are quite limited. "the war between carbs and fat is to narrow-minded, sadly" Actually, the best research shows that eating lots of saturated fat promotes insulin resistance and is causal in heart disease. And animal fat consumption is one of the two strongest predictor variables in the sharp rise in dementia in Asia (the other is added sugar).

@@karlwheatley1244 This is just absolutely false. Tell me what the mechanics are of saturated fat promoting insulin resistance? What does "promote" mean? The mechanics of insulin resistance is TOO MUCH INSULIN. Understand? Too much insulin flooding your system causes the cells to become resistant to that insulin hormone. What causes your pancreas to pump out excessive insulin? A high carb (sugar) diet will cause insulin spikes that spike higher and last longer flooding your system with this excessive insulin. Does consuming saturated fat cause excessive insulin spikes? NO IT DOES NOT. Sugar/carbs cause these excessive spikes. To say "the best research" is a joke. You understand there is no good research on this topic? And NEVER will be? The only way would be to lock a substantial number (1,000?) of people up and tightly control what they eat for a significant amount of time which would be just too expensive and therefore will NEVER happen.

@@KraigwithaK2112 "This is just absolutely false. Tell me what the mechanics are of saturated fat promoting insulin resistance? What does "promote" mean? The mechanics of insulin resistance is TOO MUCH INSULIN. Understand? "
No, that is not true, and in fact, you kind of have the causal arrows backwards--to much insulin release is a direct by-product of insulin resistance.
When you eat lots of fat--especially saturated fat--the cells in your muscles get full of fat, so then if you eat some carbs, insulin ferries the resulting glucose to the muscle cells, "knocks on the door" of the muscle cell, but insulin signaling is impaired, and the cell doesn't let the glucose in, as if it is saying to the insulin "Go away, I am already full of fat so I can't take your glucose)." But the body can't have all that excess glucose hanging out in the bloodstream, so it releases even more insulin to try to force the glucose into the cells.
Experimental studies, some going back over 80 years, clearly establish that ingesting fat creates insulin resistance within just 3 hours of eating it.
This 5-minutes video explains it, with links to the research summarized underneath:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/what-causes-insulin-resistance/
      This one is helpful too:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/diabetes-as-a-disease-of-fat-toxicity/
People can rapidly reverse their diabetes by eating diets that are very low in fat (~10% of calories, not 30%) and eating lots of high-fiber WHOLE food carbs.

It was also a diet for DIABETES Before the use of Insulin. That said most healthy long lived societies use a mix of healthy fats, proteins and carbs. Dr. Colin Campbell's research correlates high animal protein and fat intake with cancer and heart disease (as does Dr. Esselstyn). The key to a ketogenic diet is FATS and little protein. We know this does not occur naturally in nature. One final thought, from Sumerian history circa 6000 years ago we find the natives were made fun of as they ate like the rest of the animals and did not know of wheat.
