    Today's correction: Apparently, the characters walking over the environments is not what's supposed to happen, if by some miracle you get the game running as intended, then that should not happen. This means the game is amazing and I retract the entirety of my review. Thank you for your time.

    The story felt deep it really sparked my imagination but I was really young and not english so to me it was deep enough yet I could still grasp what it was about.
    The way you put it... kinda makes it sound the game is really wack. you might be right and I see your points but I never experienced it that way.

    21:30 I believe the crash happens because of the exploding orbs. If you kill the orb caster before all of his orbs have exploded, and then one explodes, the game crashes. I've had it happen a lot too, and the only way I got past the optional battle was to cc the boss until he had no orbs in the field, then go for the kill.
    Also, my favorite bug in this game is, if you spam spacebar while entering the battle where Joan dies, sometimes you will skip the dialogue part, meaning Joan won't get melee'd and will not get poisoned. But the invisible enemy stays in the screen, and you can't actually finish the battle. If you decide to attack the square where the invisible enemy is, the game crashed.
    I felt this game was quite difficult when I was like 8 years old, but now it's a cinch. One thing I still don't get why attacking with knives gives so much exp, I got all 3 MC to level 7 before even dropping down to the sewers, even though stats don't feel to make a big difference apart from getting accuracy to 100% for one, specific battle (the one where, if you miss with guns, it's game over lol)

    I love this game. Played through it so many times. It depends on whether or not you find combat system good. Personally, I think it's amazing. It is playing out more like elaborate battle puzzles. Every encounter unique, a lot of different enemy types with their own behaviors and attack patterns -- it never becomes boring. When you starting to understand how and what to do It is very satisfying to power through overwhelming number of enemies through cunning, tactic and clever positioning. And the exploration aspect I actually liked a lot too -- there are a lot of hidden stashes and secrets to find, which always contain something useful like equipment, meds or experimental weapon. And of course, bosses... they are freaking awesome - design-wise, gameplay-wise, introduction-wise. Incredible game, 10/10.
    And with so many tactical games having stupid miss/fail mechanics it's always nice to have few where you don't rely on chance so much to win.

    "Gorky Zero 2: Aurora Watching is a third-person stealth action game, and a sequel to Gorky Zero. The game was published in North America by Dreamcatcher Interactive as Soldier Elite, and in Europe by Enlight Software as Aurora Watching. The English translation ignores all ties to the previous Gorky titles, for example changing the protagonist's name from Cole Sullivan to White Fox. The English language story concerns the protagonist infiltrating a secret Russian base where scientists are developing enhanced human soldiers called "Crazy Ivans"."

    Aaaah.. Gorky...
    A game that I got, somehow, bundled with a fucking newspaper (yes, NEWSPAPER) when I was a kid.
    Back then I remember the spooky atmosphere, that unlike Grim, I was able to get because I was too scared to walk forward, the weird monsters and the exploity/save scummy combat, I loved it!
    I tried it again like a year ago, only to get goofy stereotypes and a distinct Russo-phobia, its a Polish game alright.
    It will be forever in my nostalgia zone, but ain't the best game... I do enjoy some factors of the tactics gameplay, like blocking monsters in a way that they can't even move to attack you anymore.
    Btw, I'm pretty sure you can save the Medusa guy (the friendly monster) if you just don't pass the place were he goes crazy, in my first playtrough I did just that, kept him until the end of the game, but never found the tracksuit pole, kept wondering at the time who he was because he was in a screenshot in the back of the game...

    Some misinterpreted/mistranslated and wrongly attributed facts about Sapkowski's licensing of his series are present in the video: he didn't pay a flat sum to the Metropolis developers (not by itself), but also wanted a % in royalties. Because the game never released, he never got paid for it, which made him skeptical towards any future projects.
    By the time CDPR rolled around with their version of the Witcher, Sapkowski already had licensed out the rights to a game that never released and a legendarily bad Witcher TV series (yes, there was one before Netflix, it's hilarious), thus expecting the same to happen for a 3rd time, he asked a flat fee from CD Projekt and thought that would be the end of it.
    However, as a few years back his son was terminally ill and he didn't have enough money at the time to fund his treatment, Sapkowski decided to ask for royalties from CDPR, which had legal precedence in polish copyright law. It didn't initially work out, and because his son passed away, he stopped caring that much about the issue and Sapkowsi settled cordially with CDPR, renewing his license for any future projects.
    He's also not as awful of a person as he is and the backhanded comments about video games being stupid were said during public panels at gaming/fantasy/etc related events, which when seen in person are obviously him being a sarcastic asshole (just like Geralt in the books) without really claiming it to actually be so. It's much easier, however, to paint him as this deluded idiot in writing and articles, and what fuels viewership more than controversy regarding the most popular novelist in Poland?
    All in all, these things aren't as black and white as internet mobs claim them to be and I encourage all of you to think twice before judging someone whose motives you do not realize - a lesson that's taught all throughout the Witcher series.

    • @GrimBeard
      @GrimBeard  4 года назад +18

      Yeah, I don't think I went out of my way to say that he was an awful person. I juat thought it a funny anecdote that he didn't have respect for games. The thing that, until the successful Netflix show, was the reason the majority of the west knew what The Witcher was. Anything from that segment I just gathered from the developers own words in interviews like this one:
      www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-16-the-witcher-game-that-never-was
      But, also, that was an aside to the videos topic and I therefore did not research it thoroughly.

      @n543576 4 года назад +2

      Not to undermine your backhanded point towards Grim and others here, but I think from his response maybe it would be wise for YOU yourself to think twice before judging others motives seeing as you interpreted his words as being out of malice instead of out of it being a sarcastic joke "(just like Geralt in the books)". I respect your attempt in clarifying but I think any attempt in doing so done in such a flippant assholish manner will undermine any point you was attempt to make which is how I see it, regardless of whatever genuine information you provide, how you say something is just as much if not more important then what you say.

      Well he did shit on people who played video games in more recent interviews, without whom no one outside Poland would have read his books. Moreover, I wouldn't call threatening litigation until the other party just gets sick of the whole ordeal and relents a cordial settlement. Maybe part of it was misattributed, but I felt I got a pretty consistent picture of him from the translated interviews I read.
      I get that there's precedence in Polish law for retroactively changing the terms of a contract when it dawns on you years down the line that you could have gained more from sale percentages than a lump sum (which neither he nor CDPR could have foreseen, they pretty much rolled a natural twenty with the game becoming as successful as it did), but I personally think this law is stupid, not to mention the childish way Sapkowski allegedly acted.

    game has neat secrets. If you figure them out, most of combat becomes much more manageable. When I figured the first puzzle as a kiddo, I felt like a boss. But yeah, the goal is to be able to stunlock everything while beating it up with melee. Though it does not work in all situations.

    It's one of my fav games from my childhood, i think it's kinda cemened my love for turn-based tactics. Specifically in a more adventure context, not just base-mission-base structure that alot of turn-based tactics has. Short reviews from steam are probably from people who played it when it's came out and bought on steam to support it

      I'm a massive Tactics fan. But have only seen a few Tactics games with adventure elements. Could you suggest a few?

    • @OldyAlbert
      @OldyAlbert 4 года назад

      @@milkweedreflections Well, you can probably count just any big isometric RPG with tactic turn-based combat like Wasteland 2, Divinity OS 1-2, Pillars 2 added turnbased mode, Stygian. New Bard's Tale game have a very limited but still a tactical grid for it's battle mechanics.
      New Shadowrun games (Returns, Dragonfall, Hong-Kong), even thouth kinda has this mission-base structure, i would argue still have alot of adventure inside the mission, it's not just one battle like, say, in x-com, but more just a small rpg world with more then one battle, diologues and exploration.
      There's also wierd subgenre of "solo turn-based RPG" like old Fallout games and games inspired by them like UnderRail and ATOM RPG, but they're probably not satisfy someone mainly looking for tactics, there's not that many you can do with one person.
      If we talking about something less RPG'y i can remember recent Mutant Year Zero and Rabbids mario game.
      From the upcoming games i would keep an eye out for Wasteland 3, Dark Envoy and maybe King's Bounty 2.

    Oh I remember this game with... very measured amounts of fondness, I should say? It was hyped up in my country in the day for having a Hungarian dub. However, as it was translated from an already somewhat dodgy English version by some dumdum who'd probably just failed their elementary English exam*, its plot (well, mostly the dialogue before the first combat round) was almost incomprehensible to Hungarian audiences. You couldn't just change the language. I later managed to get the English version and some years-old puzzle pieces fell into place.
    This game was followed by a similarly really awkward-to-play MGS-style prequel of sorts (Gorky 0), because they apparently felt they needed to explore Cole Sullivan's complex character further. You may wish to check that one out too if you indeed hate yourself as much as you keep implying.
    *One line I very clearly remember is "We can either sneak past it or we kill it" which ended up as "We can betray its past or kill it" in the translation. I sort of see how they tried to compensate for the lack of English knowledge, but damn, listening to the voice actors spout nonsensical bullshit all the way through just wore you down.

    oh man, grewing up in 90' in Poland I've played the shit out of this game. Granted, I did buy it few years ago on GOG and it didn't exactly hold up, but I still have some great memories.
    While I do agree with most of your criticism, I feel like you were a little harsh on the combat system - sure, it's heavily focused on status effects, but that's quite common in tactical RPGs (take Divinity: Original Sin as a modern example) and I don't feel like it makes the system less fun or feel particularly cheesy, especially still you still need your other resources to actually finish up fights

    There are two "stealth" prequel games, that focus on adventures of Cole Sullivan. I always found focusing on him to be weird, since he is the least interesting of the bunch. And since it was a polish game, why not focus on a polish character?
    Anyway, I use term "stealth" kinda loosely here, because its gameplay is barebones even when compared to the first Metal Gear Solid, which seems to be a clear inspiration here.
    In Gorky Zero: Fabryka Niewolników (which literally stands for "The Factory of Slaves" which would be way cooler subtitle than "Beyond Honor" as it is titled outside of Poland) Cole Sullivan must infiltrate Ukrainian military base that was overrun by a Cult that resurrects people to turn them into the army of slaves.
    In Gorky 02 ("Beyond Honor" outside Poland) Cole Sullivan swallows his PTSD and depression after the events of previous game in alcohol, when CIA finds that Jacek Parecki, a scientist rescued by Sullivan during events of Gorky Zero is continuing his research in the secret base in the Arctic, and might be involved in sinking of the Russian submarine Komsolovec II. Sullivan infiltrates the facility and finds, that Parecki builds a super soldier for the Russian mobster named Trafimov.
    What is interesting about these games, is that despite their discount bin quality, Metropolis Software managed to get a few good actors for the polish VA. For example, Cole Sullivan is played by Mirosław Baka, and polish spy Tatiana in Gorky 02 was played by Anna Przybylska.
    But if a premise of slavic Metal Gear Solid sounds interesting to you, and you are ready to endure some of the worst eurojank you might experience, play Gorky Zero. It really captures the vibe of sneaking through old, rusty, post-soviet military base. And if there is a way to play polish VA with english subtitles I would also recommend that, because polish VA really makes the atmosphere tick.

      This company might just have the most diverse output out of all developers. Outside of their cancelled first person shooter They, they(lol) released a point and click game, Teenagent, an RPG, Archangel, two stealth games(the Gorky Prequels), and a third person shooter, Infernal, to which I affectionately refer to as "Religious Max Payne", which also has a review on my channel.

    Wish I had TurkishBullet's video of Melee Only walkthrough, Also - you don't need to drop Medusa, that slavcrap is not worth the team slot.
    BTW. don't know if you like FPS genre but there is Pyl (Dust), pretty weird hybrid. They called it "Polish Quake" but had more Thief influence. Just find custom build from russian coders because it's unplayable otherwise, no amount of fiddling in DOSbox helps.

    Grimby, I couldn't be happier I found your channel. I love your content and I love your opinions. Like, not only dunking on the chud-o-sphere that gaming has become (I used to take my Diablo and Age of Empires manuals to school even in first grade, back in the 90s [before you could "get away" with reading shit like that in public amongst your peers]; I was "out" as a gamer cuz fuck people's opinions, but thanks to the psychos of today, I actively hide my hobby because now instead of being a "dork" or "loser", I run the risk of being misidentified as an incel/misogynist or school shooter, FFS), but even your game opinions are fucking flawless. My brother and I are total Fallout snobs (prefer 1, 2, and NV), ESPECIALLY him, and I sent him your FO vids, and all he sent back was "subbed". That's exceedingly rare for a rec from me to him, hahaha.
    You just do not fucking miss, my guy, and I'm really glad you're on here. I hope life is treating you well and you are more happy than not. Speaking as a goth on the specturm ("Gothtistic", if you will), I know that's no mean feat.

    I actually would enjoy the game being more difficult. Maybe it's because of how easy the infinite ammo weapons and tranqs make it at some point. Then they give you plenty of options like exploding barrels and tactical nukes to deal with some of the long and/or difficult fights.
    You can also keep Medusa/Hybrid playable character alive by avoiding the rooftop battle with him. There's nothing too important past that point anyway.
