Despite its age, The Sony Cyber-shot RX1 remains the best fixed lens camera ever made. It is the most powerful photographic tool in its form factor ever made. This video is a tribute to this engineering wonder and a call for a successor that will build upon the ground breaking tech that is the RX1. Enjoy!

Still using my RX1 in 2020. The only thing that hasn't aged well is the LCD compared today's ultra high pixel density screens, so you can't see how amazing the photos look until you get them in Lightroom.

Just bought this camera used in 2022 lol. May seem long in the tooth by now, but coming from X100T, the IQ and premium feel should be a step up. However lack of built in VF is a bummer. Will serve as an EDC while my A7sII will step in when I need it.

@@MuhammadKharismawan it’s a solid cam for everyday p&s or for family holiday pics. I love that it’s smaller than expected in the hands. I don’t really miss the viewfinder for daily shooting, but it kinda needs a tilt screen in lieu of that. Also the AF is workable but can be annoyingly slow sometimes. Not a deal breaker. IQ is great. The RX1R ii is probably the perfect camera, but is more than twice this camera used, so not worth the extra features imo.

@@MuhammadKharismawan image quality and portability is so good, that I sold my A7Sii. You don’t really need another cam if you’re just shooting stills and ok with being stuck at the 35mm focal length.

I love the RX1 and glad I switched to this camera. I had the A7 and FE 35mm f/2.8 lens for a while and didn't have (or want) other lenses for the A7. However, the A7 shutter is LOUD and the flash sync is pretty terrible. The RX1 lens is marginally better than the FE 35mm f/2.8 and the camera is totally silent. The leaf shutter also means the RX1 can flash sync at crazy high shutter speeds. The RX1 isn't perfect, but it's an amazing photographic tool in a very small package.

Does the RX1 have a useful zoom function?
I am reluctant to buy an RX1 because there is no telephoto zoom option like on my RX100 - an option I find myself using frequently.
But at the same time I love the RX1 from a design standpoint. I think it's a gorgeous looking compact camera...!
...and I presume the RX1 is small enough to mount on my belt when out riding the motorcycle... but I know I'll miss a zoom function.
Does the camera have a "Clear Zoom" and "Zoom to APS-C" function? My understanding is these are non-digital zoom features in some Sony cameras.

Good to see a revisit of this awesome combo. I'm really hoping they refresh the RX1 with a MKII (wifi, nfc, PDAF, etc) and keep the MKI in the lineup, but at a lower price point.

Got my hands on one for about 800€ now in 2024, also managed to order the FDA-EV1MK from Japan for another 250.
I tried the fujifilm x100 series and it was a little too large for my taste, this feels a bit better. Not sure how this older full frame sensor compares to the newest fujifilm x Trans sensors but they will both be great for a small camera and for what I'm trying to do.

I reckon it looks good with the viewfinder attached - better than the latter models with pop-up viewfinder.
One thing I miss is a pop-our touch screen for discrete shooting.

Any thoughts on the RX1R II? I've really enjoyed your coverage of the RX1 and am considering an upgrade to the mark 2 version, but can't really decide if it's worth it for me. I actually use fill flash quite a bit with the RX1 (family portraits with that castle in the background that won't move to suit the sun position!), and think that 42mp might actually be too much for me (slower operation, bigger files I'll never take advantage of). I would enjoy the articulating screen though, and possibly WiFi support. The built-in EVF is nice enough, but I actually enjoy using the rear screen for composition, partly because it helps the RX1 fly under the radar (people think it's a point and shoot).

Best decision I've made - I traded in my DSLR and its lenses and raided the piggy-bank. It goes everywhere and does all I need - mainly street shooting and landscapes. I bought a $15 rubber lens hood which folds back perfectly. Won't be buying the RX1R-II - I don't want to lose the flash. The sharpness of the images is astounding - the detail on a 16" wide monitor is just crazy. It's not for everyone but if you want a camera that you can (and will) take eveywhere it's hard to beat.

@@kumasenlac5504 Hi, I see that your review is much more recent than most. I love my 5DM3 but find it's just too big and heavy so rarely have it with me. An old friend has had every version of this. Did you get the RX1 or RX1R? New or used? EVF? I see a pretty clean RX! on ebay that is tempting me for about $900 with no EVF. Just afraid of slow AF and no EVF. Would love to hear if you or anyone has any detailed thoughts. It's July, 2019. Thanks.

Great video! In term of image quality, what do you think is better. The Sony RX1 or Sony A99 + Sigma 35mm f1.4? Should the A99 combo be sharper because it is able to be stopped down from f/1.4 to f/2.0?

So my Rx1 suffered water damage, and is irreparable. Luckily, I have an extended warranty plan, so I was offered a replacement, or a buy back option for the full amount paid. I LOVE THE RX1. But I'm in a pickle, I can't decide if I should replace the Rx1 or just take the money and look for a more modern camera with similar performance. Thoughts?

I still love mine (RX1/2013), which doesn't precisely answer your question. There is something indescribable about it - truly one of those cameras that can capture more than just the image. There's a soul/timelessness that comes out in pictures when everything comes together.

I had a RX1R and then later the mark2, the mark 2 wasn't the same outstanding IQ as the original, so I sold it. Now i had roughly 5 other cameras in between, today I own a A9, a SL, a x100v and guess what, I still miss the Rx1, so I got one today, and I can't wait to get it.

mid-2018 There's still nothing like it for a general-purpose super-portable high-quality photography machine. I never leave the house without mine. Wasn't convinced by the RX1-II, trading the fill-flash for a titchy viewfinder didn't seem like progress. $10 rubber lens hood works just great. I've shot with a 35mm lens my whole life (apart from the mid-life-crisis gross SLR+zooms) so it's real familiar. And the images !!!
