    It was an awesome trip, Lindsay!! I am so glad you decided to do it! It was a huge bucket list item for me both in terms of traveling overseas and meeting/working with you! The sketchbook was a great first activity. Our group meshed together incredibly well and we all had a fantastic time. Nickolai told me that he and Sophie like to consider their guests as family, and they really do show it!

    You said the magic words! “I think I’ll do it again!” So great to hear you reminisce about the Best Week Ever! I think I finally feel rested this morning. I sure hope you do do another retreat in Europe and please dont worry about always being on we love you no matter what! When we went to the restaurant in Albi, I loved the fact that the price on the menu was exactly what I paid at the end - no taxes added later, no special fees, etc. I wish we did that here! 🙂 The food was delicious and the restaurant staff was wonderful.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Месяц назад +7

      Yes, it makes splitting the bill so much easier and you know the staff is making a living wage. And the food is better and costs the same as in the USA. I think we have a lot of corporate greed here.

    I love how you’ve named The Want Monster and The Room of Hoard. Those simple phrases have helped keep me from over-buying. My home is small and I only have room for a Corner of Hoard and it’s already filled with enough art supplies for several years lol. I’ve started leaving things in my Amazon cart for 24-48 hours and seeing if I still want it as much then. Usually I end up removing it because I already have more supplies than I have time to use!

    My papa before he passed away on 4 March. This year had been doing Duolingo in multiple languages for 2977 days, so almost 8 years without one day break, and in that time heat also died and been revived and had a pacemaker put in, and he still hadn’t missed a day. My papa was an academic and spoke fluently in several languages, and when I say several, I mean more than 10 and then he could get by in probably another 10 minutes. Very proud of him. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful father, a pretty incredible streak. He always talked about the owl to go as something to beat

    I just took a quick look at your Craft Stash goodies. They look great!...I'm not tempted right now only bc I've recently been refreshing some of my paper-crafting supplies and have purchased some new stamps, inks & die-cuts. I didn't go crazy, bc I buy stuff for my fine art work too. I love watercoloring and all kinds of painting, (your 30 day course has been great for upping my painting game) but I STILL love me some paper-crafting...I'll never fully get away from it! Thanks! 😀

    Hey Lindsay,
    While you were in France, we were in your fine country, we just got back from Hollywood, CA flying Qantas economy with so much food on the 14hr trip. I went a little stir crazy with the time aspect.
    I went to Blicks, joined, and got some great art supplies, which I can't get in Australia, by any means! So, I came back with lots of watercolour blocks, sketch books, and watercolours. Would you believe my 900 dollar haul, would have been 2 to 4 times more per item back here, and it was all discounted! I squealed with delight, and felt like a kid in a candy store.
    QUESTIONs; I recall you saying before your New York trip, that you are not good with travelling....
    So, how did you go with the flights, travel, carrier, and time in the aircraft?
    Did you go to the Louvre, and see Mona Lisa?
    In kindred spirit,

      The flights were fine. It didn't bother me at all. The trip back felt much longer because I was so wiped out. I downloaded some books on my phone to read on the flights, and it was good to relax and do nothing. I didn't go to Paris. I flew into Toulouse so no Louvre. We did go to the Toulouse Lautrec museum in Albi tho and it was cool. I probably should have stayed longer (or arrived earlier) to do more sightseeing, but this was a full 10 days as it was. Glad you found some deals!

    As a French from the south, l’m glad you enjoyed your retreat so much 😊 If you're thinking about ever doing one in Japan, I would recommend Shikoku, one of the 4 main island but completely forgotten by tourism (I don't know why). It's in the countryside but still accessible, tons of history, monuments, temples, pilgrimages, nature, and it's a very important area for art and literature, in front of the Seto sea where every island creates art and has museums (Naoshima is one of them and a top destination for art lovers in Japan), and there's an art triennale that is gaining a lot of popularity. I live there and honestly don't understand how it's not more famous, on the other hand I'm not going to complain about how peaceful it is compared to our neighbors on the other side of the sea, Osaka and Kyoto 😝 They have it hard 🤣

    I'm so excited to hear all about this "Franc-tastic" trip!😆 On the room pairings working out: that is fortunate. Over 20 years ago, the church choir I was in went to England and sang in some of the cathedrals there. It was a truly wonderful experience. My only problem was that I was paired with another choir member who I truly liked...a very sweet lady...but she snored a LOT. I did tell her about it...she apologized...even went out & bought some antihistamine.... said to wake her up when she did it and she would change positions, etc. That would work for like 10 min max..just when I was drifting off, she'd start up again. I couldn't be mad...it wasn't her fault. So I did sleep some, but not near as much as I would have sans snoring. The last night, I slept in the bathtub 🛀 with the door closed. It really wasn't that bad. I could still hear her, but it was muffled enough that it didn't bother me. I can't say it ruined the trip...it didn't, but feeling more refreshed for each day would have been preferred.😬

    Welcome back Lindsay! It’s so good to catch up with you on Sat Chat. :) I’m looking forward to the group haul! It sounds like a blast! Man, hearing out Europe makes me want to travel too. I have cousins in Northern Germany and they always complained how much more expensive everything is here in So Cal. XD

The new products look nice and I've signed up for the next Michael's class. Glad you and Jason are home safe and sound. Thanks for sharing your adventure and the extra long Sat Chat! I've been anxious to hear all about it! 😊❤

    Hi Lindsay so glad you had a great time. Just saying you give great advice but you can't do that if you cant try products, which means you are justified in what you buy. I just love that you do not over hype products and are very honest. Gives me faith when I am purchasing and also lets me know if I am justified in my purchase or if I already have something that will work. So thank you and please stop doubting yourself. :) You are a fantastic teacher, give great advice and endless inspiration. Thank you.

    I'm so glad yall had an amazing time in France!! I'm also loving your year of favorites as it's inspiring so many ideas for my favorites and teaching me new tips and tricks!! I came across a new to me brand on Amazon called Brusarth. When I went looking for some new waterbrushes. They have a set that look exactly like the Derwent one with the push button that you have only they are pink and I paid $8.99 for the set of 4. I just received them last week and so far they seem to me to be the same quality you have expressed in the Derwent brand. Of course I still favor regular watercolor brushes with cups of water. I almost felt a little guilty for finding and buying them so cheap, less than half the price. But I guess that's just the way it goes. I do the same thing at the grocery store by buying the store brand inside of the name brand. I also saw that they have several other art supplies so I grabbed a set of they brush pen caligraphy fine liner set as they were about a $1 a pen. They are good, but I would the name brands are the way to go as these ten to bleed through although if you looking to use them to line over watercolor then maybe it would brake the bank using them on the rougher paper and save the brand name for the smooth fancy writing. I'm currently not encouraging you to buy them, but I know your always curious about look a like brands and their quality. And if there ever was an exact match or copy the water brushes sure seem like one. Although, I don't own the Derwent set the truly compare them head to head. Here's the link in case you want to at least look at them. Thanks for sharing your creativeness with the world! I'm incredibly grateful!

    Looked like a wonderful trip, Lindsay!! I loved the longer SatChat! I have a request? Would you do a comparison review of the Rosa Gallery paints with their student grade Rosa Studio paints? I just got a set of the Rosa Studio from Amazon…. I have my opinion, but your vast knowledge about pigments and quality of paints is just invaluable. I would love to educate myself about this set, through you. Thanks Lindsay!

    Glad you had a great time and I can't believe you were painting the night before you went! Traveling takes up my entire bandwidth. I have a little pad of the Clairfontaine PaintOn! that I got from Jackson's -- Sarah Burns likes it for gouache and it does work great for that! So jealous you went to a handmade pastel shop -- hope you show them on the channel!!

    Can you review the schminke essentials set? I’m torn between it and the Daniel smith set because there are no reviews for the schminke one but it’s more affordable to me but if they are worse quality I’ll go for Daniel smith so I don’t know D:

      Schminke is over hyped!! Honestly I feel like the tubes from them were hard to work with, they had Majorrrr binder separation, (some colors almost unusable for me,) some day I **might** try the pans but Lindsey talked about the student grade being better than the artist grade 🤷🏼‍♀️ so idk lol

    • @feshgogulululu
      @feshgogulululu Месяц назад +1

      @@jessieg4901I don’t have that many schminke tubes but I do remember having 2 colors that had binder separation but it was pretty minimal and after mixing them in pans they were fine. Maybe you got a bad batch or something? I do agree that they’re hard to work with though because of the formula compared to Daniel smith they’re less predictable but I’d be lying if I said I’m not interested in their essential set too 😂 just curious about them 🤔

    • @TaraDreams

      I would choose whichever paint is most accessible to you after you have used up the starter set. I have more Schmincke paints as they are significantly cheaper in the UK than Daniel Smith. Both are beautiful professional watercolours and are great to use and both dry well in pans too. Never had a tube of either with binder separation.
      Ultramarine finest (Schmincke) is very finely milled so has pretty much no granulation but they have 2 other ultramarines that granulate beautifully. The Daniel Smith French Ultramarine is lovely but hugely shrinks when drying, so regularly falls out of the small, flat wells in my mini travel palette, (and get lost), which is infuriating!
      I think Schmincke costs much more than DS in the US so probably isn't as common there so many US reviewers skip it.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Месяц назад +2

      I'm not a huge fan of schminke watercolors but the tubes rewet better for me than the pans oddly because I think the pans are made from tubes. That said, they are a good company and many artists I know count them as their favorite (I think they do the best granulating colors) so if they are more available and affordable give them a try. I think it's probably a "you like them if you are used to them" thing and it makes sence to adapt your style to the paint easily accessible to you. Honestly between the professional lines of legacy brands the quality is very similar. Some flow more, some glaze better but they are all going to be good.

    France sounds amazing. What an exciting memory for all who attended I'm sure. I'm looking forward to the artwork show and tell, and the group haul videos! When will those be coming out? (no pressure I'm just curious). Make sure to take time to relax and refresh. Teaching for a retreat means having to be "on" close to 24/7. I taught high school students for 20 years and I have been on many school teaching camps and excursions. It is always fun but EXHAUSTING.
