    In today’s episode of Retro Renew, we’re going to finish refurbing the Game Boy DMG-01 that I bought from Japan. To really make this DMG shine, I decided to install the RIPS IPS V2 kit. The reason being is that their version of this kit comes with a 3D printed bracket to align the panel making this an enjoyable and accessible install. Join me as we observe how this IPS kit can transform the gaming experience of a 30 year old Gameboy console!

    you somehow managed to even improve your already incredibly high production value in such a short amount of time. props for that tito! i am also happy to see that you doubled your subscribers since the last time i checked. i am very happy for you, definitely deserve it! i just love the attention to detail you put into your production, for example the line that connects the 3d printed bracket to its description text. as well as when you mention to put in two screws into the back housing that you use the top left and bottom right screw to ensure an even tension on the case. these details do not go unnoticed! thanks again and keep doing what you do, its great stuff!

    Hey! Been really enjoying your videos I’ve been trying to get into retro modding for a while but all the RUclipsrs I had watched have done pretty advanced kits that I really Don’t have the experience for. I found your channel and you made very simple but really informative videos on many different kits and so finally I’ve used your part 3 gameboy color backlight mod kit that you used and ordered it! You deserve a lot more subscribers! Thanks for these tutorials I hope that my modding process can go as well as yours do! :)

    I’ve installed this in an aftermarket dmg shell and buttons and I had zero issues with button response. Perhaps the shell is slightly different from stock. I also did not have to trim any plastic or pins to get the brightness wheel to work. I did have to back out the screw on that side a quarter turn, however. It seems I was lucky to get a kit that worked so well.

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 года назад +1

      Could be. That would be interesting to see if there are small differenced in the OEM vs aftermarket shell. Glad your install went smoothly! Cheers!

    Have you tried removing a layer of varnish supposedly covering the contacts? I've just read that if you use a light abrasive (like the green part of the scrub sponge) it might solve the problem. I have this model (untouched so far so eligible for return) and I am on the fence if I should install it or return it.

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 года назад

      That's really interesting. I'll have to look into this. Is it documented somewhere that the manufacture put a varnish layer over the contacts? Thanks for the tip! Cheers!

    I had my DMG in 1990 but I don't know if I could go back to using one again after using my GBC & GBP for so long with their smaller form factor, I also need to find a decent back lit screen for my GBP now!

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 года назад +1

      I agree! Sometimes though, it's nice to play an older DMG for the nostalgia. If you're going for a Game Boy Pocket backlight, I highly recomend the IPS from FunnyPlaying! Absolutely amazing! Cheers!

      The TFT LCD kit that are sold on ebay and AliExpress dont require modifying the shell. Those are probably the easiest to install. The only downside is the slightly small screen size. Cheers@

    Is there anyway to resolve the button issues with this mod?

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 года назад

      The thing that I find which helps the most is using OEM Nintendo button membranes as well as loosening the screws a bit on the PCB near the button as well as on the rear shell. Just loosen a little, not too much. I hope that helps. Best of luck! Cheers buddy!

    Will this be more visible in sunlight than the average Lcd backlight?

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 года назад

      It may depend. I think a biverted and back kit original lcd may perform better in direct sunlight. But the IPS is an overall better performer in my opinion. Really depends on how you’ll be using the gameboy mostly.
