      @@MachoNachoProductions I installed my V2 recently and didn't notice any button response problems (and believe me... I would as I'm a perfectionist). When that problem occurs, is it obvious? Could this problem be power related? I have the retrosix power board pcb installed. Also I used the original rubber pads and not some cheap repro ones.
      And finally, I cleaned he contacts with a cotton tip soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

    Hey Tito! I missed this comparison which is neat. I however ordered the v4 back in 11/11 I believe. The results as you may already know are outstanding in comparison with v3, I prefer the bigger screen size, the pixel grid mode which is brilliant and the OSD settings which let’s you move the image and frame it easier saved me the hassle of getting aligned correctly.

    The V2 PCB seems to be using a HASL (Hot Air Solder Level) finish. Solder, over time, will build up an oxide layer on the outside, and this is likely the main issue contributing to the button press issue. Most likely there is a bit of stress as well (due to the thicker PCB), and this probably causes some slight board warping (again, due to the thicker PCB), which could also contribute, most likely due to a reduced amount of the button membrane contacting the two contact points.The oxide layer on the solder is still conductive to some extent, but not nearly as conductive as a fresh layer. This is most likely why pressing harder helps; it sort of squishes the membrane down for more contact on the pad than normal, this gives a higher conductivity across the actual pad (due to better contact) and probably more surface area contacting as well. The V3 PCB seems to use an ENIG finish; this is a gold plating, which is resistant to oxidation, which is why it's often used for exactly these kinds of applications. Connectors, button pads, etc. Anything that might be making a temporary connection will likely use this finish, unless it's cheap (Not to say that the RIPS kit is/was cheap, it was most likely just an engineering oversight, which they've corrected now). Hopefully that explains some things :)

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 года назад

      Thank you for the excellent and comprehensive explanation! Lots of great information! I wonder if there is a way to reduce the oxidation of the V2 boards to help further improve conductivity? That would be great to know. Thanks again for the insight! Cheers buddy!

    • @metroid031993
      @metroid031993 4 года назад

      @@MachoNachoProductions The main problem is, even if you were to get it perfectly deoxidized, it would build up again for sure (probably within a day or two). There are products designed to combat it, but they usually come in the form of a somewhat viscous paste you apply, which would most likely cause issues with actually playing it... There are kits that you can get to plate HASL with a gold finish, which *should* be reliable in the long term, as long as the pads aren't heated past the melting point of solder, but I don't know how expensive/viable they are

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 года назад +2

      If you go to the handheld legend website you can look at the picture of what the V3 bracket looks like. There is a cut out for the ips controller board which is pretty easy to cut out using some flush cutters. The more time consuming part is filing away material on the 2 side ridges to accommodate the wider display. It took some time but you can file away enough material to allow the panel to fit. Let me know if that makes sense. If not I can try and maybe post some pictures of it. I hope this helps. Best of luck! Cheers!

    I'm not sure why I have not seen this problem in any videos but I have installed many v2 versions with no issue. but the v3 I have installed 2 and I keep noticing pressure in the front just to the right of the gameboy logo that is bulging the gameboy case. I have taken it apart a couple times and can't seem to notice what is doing this. Has anyone else had this issue?

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 года назад +1

      I myself haven’t noticed that. My main issue is the button response. The V3 kit seems to have handled that. I did notice that the PCB is much thicker than the original. I wonder if that is contributing to the issue?

  • @Cool_Retro

    Button Response Issue - Resolved : I originally purchased the V2 DMG kit from Console 5. I didn’t have any issues with buttons but the D-pad had terrible intermittent response. I was using an original Gameboy DMG that was in near-mint condition except for missing lines on the screen. I saw several posts online about this issue with no resolution. I did notice that the new front PCB was thicker and the contact pads on the new PCB were also different. I ended up buying a V3 kit, hoping it would solve the problem. I had the same issue with the controls with V3 [no difference]. I did find out that there were two different OEM silicone button pads used by Nintendo and there may be some variation in the plastic on the D-pad. I had a broken Gameboy and swapped out the D-pad and the silicon pads and the problem went away. I test the Gameboy by playing ‘Qbert’ which requires constant diagonal presses of the D-pad. It was flawless [100% there]. I hope this helps other who are using an original DMG shell when installing a V2/V3 IPS kit.

      I have seen the "square" type pads and "round" type pads.

      Was your fix done by using the more common round type pads?

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 года назад

      @@MixUpTheVideos A few things you can try to help with the button response issue is loosen some of the screws holding the front PCB, especially near the button. You don't want them too loose, but definitely not super tight. Also, some people have had better luck using OEM Nintendo button membranes vs the aftermarket one. I am not sure what you mean by square vs round type pads, can you elaborate? If you look at 2:41 in the video I show what my V3 PCB looks like. Hope that helps buddy. Best of luck. Cheers

      I am going to take it apart to install an amplifier and will try various fixes then that you and others have recommended.
      If I could share photos here it would make it so much easier. So I'll describe instead. With the A/B button membranes (I don't recall the D-Pad membrane having different variations) there is the very common membrane outer edge shape of "egg" or "elongated circle" or "oval shaped with long edges" style (to describe in a few ways). A quite uncommon variation of the A/B membrane is that the outer edge of the membrane is "rectanglular"/has "straight line edges". What else is different about them I have never looked into.

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 года назад

      Sounds good! I kinda want to do the amp mods also. Now I understand, if I remember correctly the rectangular is the oldest/original membrane design for the DMG. I have one DMG that uses it and it works well. Yeah, not sure what else is different other than the shape. If you ever want to share photos, post them to my channel's Facebook page, that way either myself or someone from the community can hopefully help out. Best of luck on the mods! Cheers!

I would make sure that the battery contacts are clean and also the power switch. Use a q tip to drop a bit of IPA into the power switch and then turn the switch on and off a few times to clean it up. Then I would use alkaline batteries to see if it works. Hopefully that resolves the issue. Cheers!
