    I have the Q5 screen and you can utilize the battery mode. You need solder in a 4th wire to battery pad on the screen board and to the positive terminal battery just above the a/b button. It displays the battery level in the upper right hand corner

      Just installed mine today without the 3D printed pieces, took my time, and laid the screen very square to the body. Turned out amazing. I’m blown away. Makes the GBC playable again in 2021 and then some. Totally worth it and the time to install it. Soldering was the easiest part. Carving body took time.

    Put this exact kit in my GBC build last week. I love it. Anyone looking for an IPS kit, this is the one for you. I bought it along with a precut shell so I wouldn't have to do much modification. Although I did need to take a little more off the edges of the viewing area. You were able to still see some of the edges with the glass screen installed. My kit didn't come with those 3D printed brackets. So I had to do it eyeball it. But I fixed it and it looks amazing now.
    Edit: forgot to mention. You're going to hate those touch pads. They are extremely sensitive. Even when I know I haven't touched the area, I find my brightness is higher than what I've set it at. I plan on going back in and just taking wire cutters and removing them. You can do everything from the OSD. The touchpads are really only for those who can't solider.

    Hey, i know this video is a bit old and i dont know if you or anybody else will see this comment. I just wanted to say that if your having power draw issues with your NiMH batteries, you can use NiZn batteries in conjuction or byselves to improve performance. The NiZn batteries are available on Amazon and Ebay from a few brands to pick from. They perform great and are rechargable. They even sell Lithium AA batteries, but they dont have as much upfront power like the NiZn.

    Thanks for the tutorial, It made the process significantly easier.
    I will say though, where I did struggle the most was cutting the shell without the 3d printed outline.
    I dont own a 3d printer, so I had to use the glass screens sticker outline and use a dremmel to sand it down because I couldn't cut in a straight line.
    All in all it came out really nice and is totally worth the effort.

Something else to do before putting the insulating film onto the board is wiring the BAT port to the positive battery terminal and the GND port to the negative terminal so that the built-in battery monitor will work. About the Eneloop problem:
    It Probably has to do with NiMh Batteries having 1.2V instead of 1.5V from a fresh Alkaline one. (This will also mean that it won‘t work when the disposable Batteries are already drained to 1.2 or lower)
    There are Lithium Ion AAs that output 1.5V for devices (or in this case combinations) that need more Voltage.

    Something of note that might be useful is that you can actually buy lithium-ion rechargeable batteries in AA form factor. These will run at 1.5V almost their entire duration, meaning that you'll always be able to power flash carts and still be able to recharge your batteries. The only problem is you'll have trouble figuring out just when they're getting low until it's very nearly dead, so you have to watch out for that. You'll also probably need a charger specific to them.
    IKEA LADDAs and Eneloop Pros will usually work fine as long as they're more close to fully charged (they have more capacity than standard eneloops and LADDAs are cheaper) or you have a newer flash cart, since the newer ones use less power.
    This mod is lovely, about the same size as the Game Boy Pocket's stock LCD, and the pixel grid effect is excellent. Also, a use for the color palette toggle is if you want to play a regular Game Boy game on your GBC, but you don't like the predetermined palette or any of the palettes you get from holding directions and buttons at startup.

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 года назад +1

    They need to start making aftermarket cases that fit these new screens. It only makes sense. The sooner, the better.

    I like original size screens but as close as to the original experience as possible. But we getting old we going blind. And need bigger screens and backlit. 🤣

    There are pads above the cartridge pins you can use to solder to. If you need a reference LMK I’ll send one. It looks better for clear shells

    Another fantastic review. I plan on buying this kit eventually. If you plan on replacing your aging Eneloop batteries, you may want to check out the Ladda 2450 mah batteries from Ikea. A four-pack is only $6.99 and they sell a cool charging book that holds 8 AA's or AAA's and you can leave the batteries in the book plugged in, as it turns off automatically. Highly recommended. Thanks again!

    I think this screen kit is the same used in the gameboy pocket ips kit, it would be nice to make a video on changing the gameboy color shell into a pocket one, to make a gameboy pocket color (sorry if my english is not very good I'm French)

    It's a voltage issue, alkaline batteries are 1.5v nimh are 1.2v. With a large draw on power the voltage drops below its threshold and causes the boot cycle. Check out the blackube rechargeable lithium AA batteries, they are awesome i use them in mine and are a great upgrade.

    PS: Watching you trip and modify an original pokemon GBC hurt me on a spiritual level. 😂
    EDIT: I didn't realize that the shell was a reproduction? :0 That's cool.

    I think you should of included battery life as a con due to the larger screen. Also if you could of done a battery life expectancy on the lowest settings. Other than that, perfect video and great work as usual Nacho leshquetit

I would like to see your methode since your ability to trim is so well done and i feel like it would be awesome content. I had a head ach trimming mine lol.

    The Everdrive problem is related to the lower voltage issued by the batteries, that's why you're able to boot on lower brightness, but not on higest. Performing a LiPo mod is a good way to circumvent that, since LiPo provide larger voltage than regular rechargeable batteries.

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 года назад +2

      💯I def need to get a good lipo battery in there. Maybe usb-c too? Cheers!

      @@MachoNachoProductions USB C is the most elegant way right now, but it take a whole lot of space. Replacing the regulator can be useful too. Stock ones are not designed to hold such a load. A lot of work, but I’d say it’s worth it !
