@@MachoNachoProductions thanks man. Can you do an affiliate link so you can make some money on it. I just bought the circuit board holder through your link, received and used it already. Think makes working on boards so much easier!
Tell me more about the buttons. I did a Funny Playing IPS mod on a standard plastic GBC with aftermarket buttons and the one thing I hate about it is how spongy and difficult-to-press the buttons are.
I really like my brass buttons! They work really well. A lot of the time the mushy feeling is due to the membranes. Sometimes the aftermarket ones aren't as good as the originals. Try swapping them out with original ones if you have them. Let me know if that helps. Cheers!
Man I love those shells, I wanted to ask about if you think the gb micro shells are worth the install or wait till there might be something better cause I have an old beat up one that I was thinking of re shelling

Hello, Quick question Tito, the battery can it be used on an ips shell instead? I already got my materials before watching this metal shell mod! Anywho, great content as always cheers!
Thank you Justin! That’s a really good question. I’m not sure since I’ve only done the IPs mod with a boxy pixel kit and rechargeable lithium battery. I think it’d be very reasonable. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions Cool! Been watching your videos trying to figure out what screen I want to drop in my GBC. I'm comfortable soldering & trimming so I will probably be going the funnyplaying (or comparable clone) IPS screen route as I love the clarity/quality of image you get from them. Maybe be worth doing a video on a regular GBC console for someone wanting to just do the IPS mod only and running some benchmarks on the battery life for AA batteries vs rechargeable lipo batteries etc. Thanks again!
@@MachoNachoProductions Also, just found this drop in kit that looks super simple. Worth checking out. console5.com/store/modern-ips-lcd-upgrade-kit-for-nintendo-game-boy-color-gbc.html
That’s true! I would recommend the IPS kit hands down. I think your really like it. And the battery life I’m sure will be more than adequate. Best of luck dude!
Nice video! I plan to mod a gbc with the funnyplaying ips screen eventualy. Was the lens you installed at the end a lens made specificaly for the ips screen or a normal sized one? Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions That's cool! By the way, did you notice any screen ghosting when playing games with an ips screen? I heard that was a problem with gbc and gba screen mods.
If there is ghosting, it’s a very small amount. I don’t really notice it when I play. To me the over all benefits of the kit greatly outweigh any of the negatives. Cheers Telrac!
Great videos, thanks so much for sharing. I have potentially a dumb question - I have a really hard time cutting kapton tape. The tape I got is crazy strong and adheres to any razor blade or scissors I use. Plus I get fingerprints all over it when I do it. Any tips for dealing with kapton?
Thank you Mr. Bawk! No such thing as a dumb question. I think that just the nature of kapton tape. I have the same issues. I also get finger prints all over it. I think this is perfectly normal. The more you deal with the kapton tape, the better you will become at handling it. I hope that helps a little. Cheers!
Hey Michael! Glad you enjoyed that sequence. It was a combination of filming it on a very dark background while rotating on a lazy Susan and then using the mask feature in post to remove the lazy Susan. Then of course tilting it in post to give it that floating in space look. Cheers dude!
Hey man, awesome video! I’m going to attempt this exact mod at some point. I have most of the materials already, but I was wondering if it’s possible to include a pam8302a amp somewhere as well. Is there any extra space in the shell?
Amazing video. I was just wondering though... is there any mod to show when battery life is getting low. (So you know when to plug it in) before losing a saved game.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video. I’m not 100% sure but I think the battery indicator light on the gameboy still works. I think it’ll start to dim once the battery is low. The nice thing is that you can plug it in while playing just in case. Cheer buddy!
I actually just recently got Benn Venn's Aioli drop in LCD kit for the GBC. I haven't looked at it yet so, apologies I can yet answer your question. I am sure they will be quite similar but Benn Venn kits tend to be very power efficient. Not sure how the generic kits are in comparison. Perhaps one day I will get around to reviewing Benn Venn Aioli kit for the GBC. I haven't used any Jelly Bellys Customs products yet, but I hear great things about them, so again apologies, I can't speak to that. Cheers buddy!
Would the USB C board and LiPo fit into a plastic GBC shell with some modding? I like the look of the Mcwill mini usb solution but.. USB-C everything 😅
Is it possible to do this mod by just using the ips funny playing lcd with flex cable without using the boxy pixel Aluminum case, while also using the battery mod? I pretty much want everything besides the Aluminum case. I love this mod but want a custom case
That's a great question. I can't say for sure since I haven't tried it but I imagine it is going to be really hindered by the touch sensor. If you really want the IR functionality, I would recommend not installing the sensor. I actually find that the default brightness is plenty bright. Cheers!
Perhaps I should do a video running some test on how long these batteries last! Unfortunately, I don't know currently. Sorry for not being helpful. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions maybe if they do that I'll buy one I have a lot of interest in their products. I've been following your channel closely, I love what you do on here. Keep up the good work :)
You don’t need a custom shell, but it makes the process a whole lot easier. Modding the shell is quite challenging. HHL sell some great cheaper customs shells for this mod. Cheers!
Is it possible to use this housing with double A batteries and the original LCD? I think it's a slick housing, but I don't have the money for all the parts at once, and I don't want to leave my GBC open while I wait for parts.
Hey Lasky great question! Unfortunately the metal boxy pixel shell is not compatible with AA batteries because there is not battery door, it needs to have the lithium polymer battery and charging PCB installed. I do believe this kit is compatible with the original LCD, but you will need a 3D printed bracket so that it fits into the shell. I would double check the boxy pixel website, he has a lot of great information on there that should clear things up. I hope this helps answer your questions. Best of luck! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions yeah I just saw the lack of door. Well I do hope to see what I can do. However in the mean time I'm going to install an AGS screen that I have into an AGB. So wish me luck, because my hands jitter a lot when working with small things like this.
So I am currently going through my own process of doing this to my old Color, ive connected the battery and when i went to test the screen, it is on but extremely dim. Though when I turn it off, it flashes for a moment and I can see that the backlight is working. Do you have any advice on how to remedy this issue?
Thanks man! I wish I could work on these Game Boys full time! There are a lot of great kits out there and helpful videos too. I'm sure you can do these mods on your own! I feel like these kits are improving little by little, I would love to see a V3!

Love the Videos man, started watching a few days ago and cant stop. I noticed you sometime show your 3D printer in use. What brand is it and do you recommend a certain model? I am thinking about purchasing one soon. Any help would appreciated. Thanks!!!
Thank you dude 🙏! It’s the Prusa Mini. It’s a great little printer. I recommend it! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks man. Can you do an affiliate link so you can make some money on it. I just bought the circuit board holder through your link, received and used it already. Think makes working on boards so much easier!
Awesome dude! Thank you! Unfortunately I dont have a Prusa affiliate. I really appreciate the support!
Curious will the Brass control buttons verdigris?
They will. Mine have lost their luster but I kinda like the patina. You can coat them with some clear coat to prevent any oxidation. Cheers!
what gauge wire did you use for the battery connections?
I used 28 awg
Tell me more about the buttons. I did a Funny Playing IPS mod on a standard plastic GBC with aftermarket buttons and the one thing I hate about it is how spongy and difficult-to-press the buttons are.
I really like my brass buttons! They work really well. A lot of the time the mushy feeling is due to the membranes. Sometimes the aftermarket ones aren't as good as the originals. Try swapping them out with original ones if you have them. Let me know if that helps. Cheers!
Which screen do you like better the Q5 OSD or this one?
Man I love those shells, I wanted to ask about if you think the gb micro shells are worth the install or wait till there might be something better cause I have an old beat up one that I was thinking of re shelling
I think the macro shells are totally worth it, although I'm not sure if an upgrade is in the works! Cheers!
@machonacho, whose blue mat is that you are using for disassembly? Love the small cells for catching screws!
Check out the link in my description. I think I have it there. It’s from Amazing. It’s great!
really nice video,i have a FunnyPlaying DMG GB,i just saw your video to know how to switch retro pixel mode, really helpful!! thank you!!,and one more question, the FunnyPlaying DMG GB screen size is 44X48.5mm,do you know this GBC and GBP screen size? thx a lot!!
does a laminated kit work with this boxy pixel shell?
Hello,
Quick question Tito, the battery can it be used on an ips shell instead? I already got my materials before watching this metal shell mod! Anywho, great content as always cheers!
It can, but the shell will require quite a bit of trimming to get it to fit inside.
Wouldn't metal buttons wear out the rubber membranes faster? Know they're relatively easy to replace but still curious
Solid video, as always. Whats the typical battery life on those IPS displays for the GBC using regular ol AA batteries?
Check out this video I made a little while back. I think I use that same kit: ruclips.net/video/P2qpYBLy7c4/видео.html
What is the thickness of the Kapton tape you use? Thank you
12mm. I think I have a link to the exact one I use in the video description. Cheers!
Nice video! I plan to mod a gbc with the funnyplaying ips screen eventualy. Was the lens you installed at the end a lens made specificaly for the ips screen or a normal sized one? Cheers!
Normal screen will work perfectly!
@@MachoNachoProductions Thanks a lot!
Cheers!
How long battery lasts compared to the original?
How’d you get the GBC to rotate like that in the outro? Subbed!
Hey Michael! Glad you enjoyed that sequence. It was a combination of filming it on a very dark background while rotating on a lazy Susan and then using the mask feature in post to remove the lazy Susan. Then of course tilting it in post to give it that floating in space look. Cheers dude!
Great work, man!
Thank you!
Is there any where to buy one that’s already built?
Hey man, awesome video! I’m going to attempt this exact mod at some point. I have most of the materials already, but I was wondering if it’s possible to include a pam8302a amp somewhere as well. Is there any extra space in the shell?
I’m sure you can find space in the shell but just make sure to is insulate it well so it doesn’t short out.
@@MachoNachoProductions would thermal tape be sufficient? Thank you for the response!
Yes, kapton tape should do. Just to be sure I would email Nick at boxy pixel to confirm fitment. He’s pretty responsive. Cheers!
🖤🤘
At 8:03 you cut some wire that I didn’t see in the products and tools list earlier, do I have to buy some wires or would these just be in the kit?
It comes with the ips screen kit
Amazing video. I was just wondering though... is there any mod to show when battery life is getting low. (So you know when to plug it in) before losing a saved game.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video. I’m not 100% sure but I think the battery indicator light on the gameboy still works. I think it’ll start to dim once the battery is low. The nice thing is that you can plug it in while playing just in case. Cheer buddy!
Awesome I will be doing the same mod very soon! Also is there a type c charger for color or just for advance?
They also have it for the color! That’s the one I have in the video. Cheers buddy and best of luck on the build!
So when we expecting to see an Advance SP of this shells?
Great question Wimo! I hope soon! It would be so cool! Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions I’m literally here thinking that when this comes out I’m gonna wait for your video in it.
I'm curious if I could use the usb c charging board in a different shell
Yes, you absolutely can! Esotericsean did a video on it a while back. Cheers!
Hey have you built any GBC using the drop in kit from Jellybelly Customs? how different is their generic drop in kit to Bennvenns?
Haha all usb c everything! Yes it should fit in a standard shell with modification. It will be quite a bit of work but rewarding when done! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Awesome, thanks!
Is it possible to do this mod by just using the ips funny playing lcd with flex cable without using the boxy pixel Aluminum case, while also using the battery mod? I pretty much want everything besides the Aluminum case. I love this mod but want a custom case
one question is the IR still working or is the sensor in front of it
That's a great question. I can't say for sure since I haven't tried it but I imagine it is going to be really hindered by the touch sensor. If you really want the IR functionality, I would recommend not installing the sensor. I actually find that the default brightness is plenty bright. Cheers!
So I have a question what type of solder are you using?
Great question Josh! Check out the video description. I have an link to the exact solder I use. Hope that helps bud! Cheers!
My question is how long would this run? I would love to see the ultimate battery mod for a IPS Backlight !
Perhaps I should do a video running some test on how long these batteries last! Unfortunately, I don't know currently. Sorry for not being helpful. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions No problem! Love your videos, and your interaction with your audience ! I already shared your videos with some friends!
Awesome, thank you for sharing dude!
2020, Why dont use 1.5V Li-ion recheargable batteries ?
It bothers me there's no cut or indent for the sticker on the back :(
That would be a really nice touch if boxy pixel added that. Maybe in a future revision! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions maybe if they do that I'll buy one I have a lot of interest in their products. I've been following your channel closely, I love what you do on here. Keep up the good work :)
Thats fuckin dope man
Thanks man! Cheers!
any word on the new retro pixel screen for gbc by funnyplaying please ?
Coming soon!
Has anybody tested the solid brass buttons on a plastic aftermarket GBC shell? How does it feel?
Do I need to get a custom shell to accommodate the FunnyPlaying screen? I want to just install the screen and nothing else.
@@LaskyLabs Haha, good luck dude!
So I am currently going through my own process of doing this to my old Color, ive connected the battery and when i went to test the screen, it is on but extremely dim. Though when I turn it off, it flashes for a moment and I can see that the backlight is working. Do you have any advice on how to remedy this issue?
I’d make sure your solder joints are good and solid. Also that the lcd is properly connected to the driver board and motherboard.
I would for you to work on my gameboy pocket and bring it to 2020 standards
Thanks man! I wish I could work on these Game Boys full time! There are a lot of great kits out there and helpful videos too. I'm sure you can do these mods on your own! They may look intimidating but once you do a couple I'm sure you'll feel more comfortable. Also, if you run into issues you can always reach out to me and I will try to help! Best of luck! Cheers!
