I'm loving the fact that this new shell lets you use normal AA batteries and leaves the door open for a rechargeable one in the future. More options are always a good thing!
Not disappointed, another great video ! You're right, that's definitely "What if Apple made a game boy ?". The battery opening compartment and the bigger space to see the cartridge really is a nice touch. What did you think of the additional weight btw ? Come on Tito, reopen it and add the clean amp and funny playing speaker just to push it a little bit ! Already waiting for my next fix of Macho Nacho.
That looks amazing. Now all it needs is machined aluminum start/select buttons and a transparent aluminum screen cover to make every exterior part metal. Granted, that screen protector would probably more than double the cost of the kits.
This is so cool! I wish you could buy these fully built. I don’t think I have the confidence to be able to make this myself lol. Great video. Thanks for sharing
Considering that the Play It Loud clear DMG I used to have only cost US$50 new when my mom got it for me and I ended up trading it in towards one of the translucent frost colored GBAs (I forget if it was frost blue or frost purple, it's in storage right now), I'm probably not someone who would spend almost $300 to metalize a classic Game Boy that only plays on a monochromatic screen. It looks hella pimp, though.
Easily one of the best retro video game channels out there. Even if you compulse me to drain my wallet on a never ending list of projects. All metal dmg build looks legit .
I did the full retrosix mod (capacitors, screen, sound board, and power board with usb-c) for my gamegear.... next I will get myself an everdrive for it... but the missing thing that I'm hoping for one day.. is a boxy pixel game gear shell... that make the game gear absolutely incredible...

This is awesome, would prefer it in black with a rechargeable battery conversion kit using the cutouts already implemented then it's the ultimate DMG to me! The cost is understandable for the quality and materials.
As soon as I saw your video I had to order a blue anodized shell to go with my blue anodized GBA :-) The video was helpful as always, thank you very much Tito!
My build had a few speed bumps compared to Tito's. The most important was that I used the included screen bracket; I chose everything off the list on this video except the 3d printed bracket mentioned in the video. The 4 square blocks on the screen bracket that came with the kit needed to be filed down. This was to stop the click wheel being forced against the back shell and stopping it turning. The other was more bad luck, the adhesive on the glass lens was not perfectly cut leaving some glue on the back side. I ended up having to clean off all the adhesive, polish the screen and apply my own cut strips of 3M double sided. All of this took several re-openings, but in the end I have a really nice result and the Gameboy is great to hold and play.
Man wish I’d have seen this comment before starting my build. I’m running into the same issue. Put it back together and the contrast wheel is jammed. Couldn’t figure out what the issue was. Wish this video was amended. With a mention of this. That was the only part the I used different from Tito.
@@nicolasbray2407 after the fact I noticed that boxy ended up producing a bracket in the same material as the plastic battery connector pieces, one day I might install one just to fully complete the build (even though I would be the only one who knew about it).

Got a green aluminum cart shell too. favorite thing is the thumb screw and changing the batteries haha I also went with a rips TV out ips kit instead of the funnyplaying. Absolutely in love with it. It's my favorite boxypixel device so far and I have all boxys stuff except the unhinged. Edit: I hope he sells the thumb screws seperate. I'd love to have like 3 just in case ya know ;)

Man boxy pixel really keeps upping the game! I'd love to see this shell but with colour correct anodized buttons! Is there any reason why the power switch cap is the original one though? Thanks Tito for another great video!
I think the battery insert should come with the kit standard. I think it's a little silly to not at least include everything you need to make a stock dmg work. Charging for each battery insert separately just doesn't look good to me.
My hope is one day for something like this that'll enable you to add the guts from a GBC; then you'd have the ultimate DMG that's able to play the entire Game Boy range (not including GBA).
Batteries are awesome, after a few years you can barely get a charge on most non-battery machines or they look like they are ready to explode, my NEO GEO X won't charge at all.
so not to be a negative nancy but after trying a couple of these builds myself; they look and feel amazing as far as overall presentation and attention to detail. That said, for performance; if you intend to actually use the gameboy, these kits are not that great (especially if you choose to go with the metal buttons). The OEM button pads aren't clicky enough to return to origin with the metal buttons+triggers or the extended plastic buttons to provide an OEM fit, finish, and function. As a daily driver I wouldn't recommend as I found myself going back to the original GBA or SP with replacement plastic shells and keeping the aluminum kits on display.
That’s true, I can see that the plastic buttons feel more original. I think the combo of a metal shell and plastic buttons could be a good middle ground
