The Retro Future needs to see this
I was thinking the exact same thing!
Indefinite he does
My boy Elliot becoming the person on people's minds makes me happy.
Im sure he's all over this already. He probably collaborated with Boxy....lol
@Elliotcoll ..
Absolutely LOVE this shell, just wish compatibility with accessories could have been maintained. I'm also a bit disappointed that the shoulder buttons were not replaced-- they're probably my least favorite part of the standard SP. Some larger, metal shoulder buttons would be really nice!
I can confirm, the larger metal should buttons are really nice!
Dang, the quick look at the custom joycons in the beginning summary got me reconsidering waiting for the Zelda ones to come out in June...
Wow it's beautiful! For sure the best GBA that appeared on your channel! Thank you so much for sharing this build Tito!
You’re welcome Anderson! It’s also my favorite!
flat out! you got the dopest synth intro in the whole retrogaming community!
I hope they make an affordable plastic version
That would be awesome!
It would probably more comfortable as well. Probably
Probably not because they go on the bandwagon "making it metal = premium".
BTW metal housings are not more expensive as plastic in production, it's just markup because companies know that metal is associated with higher Quality (which it isn't) so they charge you more.
@@livinlicious I mean, metal is more expensive; but it's like 20%, not 200%.
@@scrubscrub4492 yeah but of course having any injection molded parts would be significantly more expensive than anything milled or printed.
luckily I came across this video in my recommended. Such clean editing with an aesthetic I cant get enough of! Love the content. Subbed.
I love your choice of jazzy soundtracks btw. Your videos are very soft on the ears. I also like your level-headed pros and cons approach to every mod. Great stuff, man 👍
"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should."
This is seriously cool but the original clamshell design was genius for regularly carrying around in one's pocket(s) as a kid/teen!
Yes it made it so it didn’t get the screen scratched so the screen stayed perfect. It was a nice feature.
or adult... since I guess I'm technically not a teenager anymore
yeah, weird to take away the hinge
Great video man, definitely was excited to check this one out.
I got my hands on this myself and I gotta say I have a few issues with it myself. Most you already addressed, but a big one for me were the L/R buttons, the loss of the springs makes the buttons feel stiff and not having that slight kickback from them just doesn't feel right. They still work just fine, but in terms of comfortability, I'd say it just doesn't feel too good pushing those buttons, especially when they're so close to the upper back of the shell now. It's almost a deal breaker for me if I'm going to be perfectly honest.
The light pipe not fitting properly was also pretty disappointing. But, seeing what you did gave me an idea of what I can do instead.
The other issue I had, it's not too bad, but I have to point it out. I ordered the 3D printed parts to fit over the optional USB-C and headphone jack openings and temporarily installed them, but I ran into an issue where the parts just don't stay in place. Maybe I'm missing something? But it looked as though the GBA SP motherboard is supposed to hold them in place, but I found that nothing worked to keep those parts there, and I really didn't want to use hot glue.
Overall, I think this shell is amazing aside from those issues I ran into. The big one for me is mostly the L/R feel.
Thankfully barely any games use those buttons
Been waiting for your install and review since the pre-order announcement. Can’t wait to get one! Thanks!!!!
Where can i get one
Your content stands out so much!! Such amazing production, and you never skimp on the details of the process I have now modded a Gameboy DMG, and Gameboy Color a GBA, and a GBA SP and your content was one of my biggest inspirations as well as my step by step guide! So glad that the retro handheld community has someone of your caliber as part of it! Keep going dude 💪🏾!
That really means a lot me Mr. Ventura! I’m so thrilled you’re enjoying the channel and that your getting into modding! Sounds like you have an awesome collection of modded systems! Cheers buddy!
Dang, that’s sharp. I’ve been waiting for this one!
I love it! Fantastic build quality!
@@MachoNachoProductions I’ve got an sp ags-001 in desperate need of a shell replacement and, if I can get the cash together, this would be amazing. Like you said it, it’s the perfect game boy I never knew I needed!
BRUH $94 for a door wedge 😂
i will take 10
😂
Got a 2DS for 20 bucks and with that form factor it's definitely the better door wedge.

great overview and color selection! didn't see the macro in the video for listing there products. its one i'm looking forward to doing myself. keep up the great content!
I've been following the development of this and the metal joycon shells over on BoxyPixel's social media. very cool to see!
Honestly wish they also offered a budget friendly version of this design.... that $94 price tag is for like the 1% consumer....
I’de take a plastic clear version
Yeah I think a plastic Version would be cheaper
I hate to say this.... someone could copy it in and 3d Print but that would be super DICK move since they went through the trouble to make this in AWESOME aluninum.
maybe the $94 you can do like I used to do to be able to afford things.. I put an envelope on the wall and would put a couple bucks in it until I could buy what I wanted.. Just a suggestion.
@@adonian there are 3d printed non folding case for the gba sp since months on Plattform like thingiverse.
But not looking the same on the display part
There will be some company making a plastic version if this is even a tiny bit popular
Watching this again after the preview. Still an amazing Mod! I hope they make a hinged version, or at least an unhinged version that accepts an AGS 101 screen.
Can I just say that your soldering is so clean!! I don’t even do projects like these but I can you really take pride in your work.
Thank you🙏! I’ve definitely improved over the years. Comes with practice.
Thank you for watching the channel! Cheers!
Just ordered everything for this build, I am so excited already! This build looks soooo amazing.
Nice! You’ll love it dude!
This is amazing!
Wonder if they'll do a clear shell version. If one appears, I'll definitely get one.
I need to pick this shell up, it looks so good
Beautiful installation and video! Man, Boxy Pixel's shells are all so beautiful. I have the GB Macro one myself and I LOVE IT.
Thank you 🙏! Yes his shells are awesome! The macro is one of my favs!
I found this video extremely helpful in 2023! Thank you kindly for all the thoughtful and great work!
It looks amazing, I feel like they should’ve hollowed out a spot on the back for the Nintendo logo sticker
So beautiful and premium. I dig it... and I'm still mad at myself, years later, for selling my silver SP with Metroid Fusion, Golden Sun, Castlavania: Circle of the Moon and LoD: The Minish Cap. I wish I would still have these today
Oh man those games are classics! Great taste!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks, and congrats for your very educative and interesting content, I've discovered your because of My Life in Gaming
Buddy this is insane , i had Never seen one of your videos, 2 minutes into this one and i must subscribe !
That’s a great looking console! Never bought any boxy pixel products before, because I couldn’t justify the price tag; however I drank the Kool Aid on this one. Now after watching your video you put me in a big dilemma:
I ordered the whole anodized black buttons & all the gimmicks! But now I really want to do the one you did! Looks awesome man! Congratulations and glad you’re doing well in your channel!
WOAHHH GAMEBOY WITH NO HINGE 😳
When this had been announced as being GBC oriented, I was hoping for top loading instead of bottom loading carts. :(
kind of hard to do
@@levanpolka289 Not particularly. I've taken apart the Gamester Game Changer. I know what's required to do it
@@ViolinistProductions yes, but if it's already at $94 i think trying to add something like that would be an extra $50 and nobody wants to pay $150 for a GBA shell
@@levanpolka289 You have to remember, the average person isn't looking at this, it's already a specialty item. Setting it up to be top cart loading would be more beneficial to those already looking at this, than not.
@@ViolinistProductions Nah. Having to desolder and re-wire the cardridge slot to move it would put this in a whole different level of skill to do. Right now it's mostly screws, you want to move it into advanced soldering. Whole different skill set, whole different potential userbase.
Yeah il can see my self having a go at building one of these. They look fantastic!
I can see a matt black, aluminium shell with orange and green buttons etc.
Awesome!
Today, for the first time in months, went to Boxy Pixel's website and saw the Unhinged SP for the first time. Then I get the notification of your new video. Sold! They owe you a commission. Great.... I have a new shell for the junked yard sale SP I bought during early Covid. Thanks again for the superior videos they really get me through the B-Crap. Great! Please keep it up and good luck with the Patreon!
Thank you Matt!!
Man, thought I was watching This Does Not Compute.
Witch isn't a bad thing. I could watch Macho & Compute back 2 back all day
@@Corylewis5 time to make a playlist ;D
I expected this to be that British guy who Mods GBs all the time.
This is one of the coolest looking mods ever. Wow. It's so much cooler than the vanilla SP in my opinion. Nice video as always as well!
Thanks Alexander! It really is an awesome mod! Cheers!
just built this. thanks so much for the helpful videos. my only previous soldering experience was mechanical keyboards.
solid intro bro love your work and creativity man i wish to be as good as you
Am I the only one, clamoring for a boxy pixel shell for the PSP, with a nice screen, bigger battery, maybe with the disk tray removed, making it thinner.
Yesssssssssss, or even for the Vita....show the vita some love boxy😭😭
If you dont want the disc, with a c, drive, then buy a psp go. It has the nicer screen and is smaller, etc.
@@Di3mondDud3 I much prefer the controls on the OG PSPs to the Go
That would be something I can get behind!
You lost me at thinner with no disc drive. The PSP's digital support is terrible, there are so many great games you can only get on UMD. Also, thinner eventually starts to get worse; harder to hold, less ergonomic. I'd rather have a thicker, more ergonomic system.
Just spent too much money buying all the parts to build this. Already have the boxy gba. The quality is unmatched.
This looks beautiful. Not really interested in doing this myself (I'm a novice at soldering and my gba sp has been a paperweight for many years) but it's really cool that such options exist.
Super excited to get this one! I already have Boxy Pixel's normal GBA shell and the quality is incredible.
A $40- $50 plastic shell would be awesome. Love the concept, but over $100 for a metal shell is steep, but i see why.
A plastic version would be awesome!
@@MachoNachoProductions working on it
I've got an SP with a broken screen and hinges I've been looking to do something with. Going to give this a shot if Stimulus 3: The Reckoning ever happens
Same problem with my game boy it got crushed with a desk chair by accident
LMFAO yoooooo im curious what was the first 2 parts called??
@@BlqJester I also wanna put my stimmy #3 towards this, silver with blue buttons would be sexy as hell.
Shhhh.... the Rep's are listening...
Jobs are a thing. You don't have to wait for a government handout.
Wonderful video! this my first time on your channel, and it's safe to say I have a new favorite person to watch!
This thing is really elegant, and I thought before about how a game boy advance SP win fully open is similar to an original game boy in shape and layout... To see it in this package is beautiful!
I'm not very good at soldering yet... But I did just find my AGS 001 from a long time ago... This would be sick!
Thank you for this!
Jamal, you’re most welcome! And thank you so much for the kind words 🙏! So glad you are enjoying the channel and that I was able to show you something new! Cheers dude!
I was thinking of replacing the old shell to a new one but this is so much better!
oh Tito. your really good at making me want to spend money XD
Advertising is designed to do that.
eagerly awaiting mine. it looks like it could be lost in the mail...
Yeah, "accidentally".
I've been waiting for this for such a long time!
It looks so good!!!! I’m soo hyped for the vid!
What the hell, this looks beautiful. I might finally be convinced to mod one of my 101's...
It’s a great shell! Unfortunately it only works with an IPS screen. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions what? why? :(
@@saddlesore_adventures well u gotta ask BoxyPixel for that, he makes these aluminum shells for GB color, GBA and now GBA SP. I would assume AGS101 screen are fairly rare as a stand alone display kit and most AGS101 owners would not want to "ruin" the original device. Honestly though i prefer the IPS screen over the AGS101, it is brighter, sharper and most importantly, fully laminated.
@@MachoNachoProductions Yeah I think I'll continue living vicariously through your youtube mod builds lol
I knew a machined aluminum housing wouldn't be cheap, but buttons and the IPS display bring this up to price that I probably couldn't justify modding for a system I admittedly don't play as much anymore. lol
Agree it is pricey. I too wish they were more affordable. Cheers!
Its really cool just dont know if its 100$ + cool.
Wow this is beautiful. I've been waiting for the Analogue pocket to finally be available for some time now, but this looks just as good. This and the Analogue have similar form factors.
I’m an idiot, so I’m gonna get both 😃
Wow, this is a gorgeous design.
This is genuinely a beautiful build... Just hope the display is as tough as the rest of the shell looks.
Portugal aqui 🇵🇹👍🏻

This is fantastic. Phenomenally beautiful. Superb! 🤟
I've been waiting for the video since the announcement, and it's finally soon.
I hope you enjoy the video!
@@MachoNachoProductionsAll of your videos are great. Keep it up bro.
Man it's really a gameboy sp with no hinge is so cool
Looks so good! Nostalgic and looks really premium.
This is awesome, I’m always impressed with your work!
Thank you so much Astral 🙏!
i'll wait for someone to copy it in plastic for a more reasonable price! But, i can't deny it looks gorgeous. Superb design.
I've did this once with 3d printing, i found the project from thingiverse (boxypixel takes the inspiration from there). it cost me around $20 to print the parts, but sadly no RL button and no charging port (need to solder the RL button with a tactile switch and a usb c charging module for the charging port)
I don't know how the bit that holds the screen would translate into plastic..might not be strong enough to keep from breaking away from the lower section the first time it get bumped..
@@jimcornish242 i'm using some kind of styrofoam to hold the lcd (i'm using the generic 001 lcd)
Wish this shell flipped the motherboard having the cartridges on the top behind the screen
That would end up with reversed controls
@@20cent yeah some extra pcb and soldering would be needed. Would probably try to extend the slot with a ribbon to move it up and have an extra pcb on the bottom to move the charger and link
@@Jaxru if there was an adapter cable that plugged into the cartridge slot, and ran to the top that would be ideal. Kind of how gamesharks used to work. Might make the system a little thicker though.
@@lapislazuli1431 yeah something like that, shouldn't be impossible to do without adding thickness, just got to secure the cable.
Tempted to try and make a case and 3d print it.
But don't have excess sp's to experiment on
Thank you for all of the steps. This was a great tutorial. I can't wait to make my own.
Your welcome dude! And that you for the support bud! Much appreciated!
Man that looks absolutely gorgeous!
That thin top would have me freaked out I'd like it to be a little bit bulkier
Since this is a shell from scratch, I really wish they would've focused on making the battery space even bigger since the ips mod is so power hungry and 1700mAh isnt enough
Dang, cant you just play plugged in? Where do you play that you burn out of 1700mAh and have no wall outlet? Just curious.
1700mah is over twice the standard SP battery size...
@@DokterRoetker i guess i was a little misleading in my comment and i apologize for that. what i meant was that even though 1700 is really great and enough for 1-2 days of gameplay (i have the retromodding 1700mAh in my GBA), i wish that they at least could've maybe made the space somewhat bigger for the battery. I only have this opinion based on that this is a custom shell and they can therefore make it as custom as they like. i quess it probably was on the table when they developed this, but the size shouldnt be too thicc either
@@crilleredits6360 okay fair enough. But to have a bigger battery option one would only need to exchange the rear housing, so it's still feasible in the long term
@@DokterRoetker true, if they did make a seperate back for this shell so you could choose a bigger battery (and maybe fix the L and R trigger issue ive been reading), then it would be a win win :)

@@MachoNachoProductions Hey man, did that the lens come with the kit? It looks custom, but since I ordered my screen direct from Funnyplaying, I want to make sure I didn't miss out.
It’s actually a generic IPs kit that I bought from retro game repair shop. It’s probably my favorite one since the lens comes attached and the lettering is rather nice. Also I like the white border. Cheers!

Oh very!
I finally got my shipping notification from Boxy Pixel on this mod! I can’t wait to get it going once it arrives!
Can't wait to get this on eBay for six bucks when I'm 48.
Need something like this for the ds lite
2DS? 🤣
That ds that looks like a door wedge
I love you Mac set up in the background
Looks better than I thought. I have a spare motherboard I think I need to mod one. Amazing video
Finally the design Nintendo should of went with for the GBA SP! Looks amazing!
What? It's great but youre trippin if you think this is superior to the foldable SP.
Why isn't the game slot at the top, it'd look amazing without a classic Gameboy cartridge sticking out of the bottom
well without having the motherboard under the screen or resoldering the port and bringing it up to the top its pretty hard obviously if you’ve opened one up or atleast seen a tear down video youd know that whilst it’s possible its hard and besides this is just a case
Beautiful! Thanks for the video!
bought it instantly with the ips v2, i cant wait. thank you!
It’s great! You’ll really enjoy it!
$95!? I'll pass, thanks.
This should not be taken down by nintendo.

So beautiful! Your videos are the best! My favorite!
Thank you so much Lu 🙏
Excellent installation. And very well explained as always.
Thank you dude! 🙏
I wish I could solder that well 😭 this is awesome!
You don't really need to solder beautifully, Since your ugly work will be covered by a beautiful shell.
This is a really good idea. Not only is it reminiscent of the OG Game Boy (& in some ways, physically parallel to the Analogue Pocket) but it also removes the hinge issue & the shoulder buttons finger cramp (i have big hands, so I prefer the OG GBA). Also would be nice to have an ABS Plastic options
Edit: the omission of support for certain GBA accessories such as GBA to GC is a bit of an annoyance but I guess the optional features (USB-C charging & 3.5mm headphone jack) make up for it
This is a gorgeous little beast of a mod. I like it!
It's beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. This is next level modding.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video!
It's worth noting that the brightness can just be controlled with the onboard SP brightness adjustment and the addition of that cable is pretty superfluous
The quality of your video are amazing! You deserve way more subscribers :)
Thank you so much Lamington! Means a lot dude!
Love this mod. Can’t wait to do it myself
Looks beautiful!
I'm not a big gameboy fan but love the look of them in these metal shells and would be brilliant in a collection
I've been checking out Boxy Pixel recently and this build had me interested. I still might do it, but a little nervous because I solder like a slob.
