Earthwork sounds awesome , but one DK20 cost like whole old set of mics. This comparison its not fair to old stuff i think. Try compare Earthworks with DPA :-)

The frequency range is so much more broad with the Earthworks, much more crisp and vibrant. And that SR20LS makes that kick sound stupid thicc. Thanks a ton for sharing this!

Definitely can tell the difference w the new mics. Though i think you should need a snare bottom mic, because that snare (at least to me) lacks a bit of the typical "cracky" sound.
I hear you, currently I have no snare bottom mic, but that’s definitely something I need!

New mics sound great! Love the response. They make your kit feel more up front in the speakers and bring a boat load more body and weight to the kit. I do slightly prefer the D112 on the kick, just a mic, as an engineer that I'm super familiar with and have used to record every rock kick drum I've recorded I think. Still, there isn't a ton of difference between the D112 and the Earthworks kick mic, so I like both, just a slight preference for the AKG. Toms, snare and overheads, the difference is night and day, not even close. Fantastic upgrade.

The difference from the f9’s to the SR25’s are insane! Listen to the ride groove at 9:06, and then listen to it when the Earthworks comes in. It’s so crispy and bright, which an overhead should be! Sounds amazing!

Nice vid! How’s your experience with the mics?
I really like the Earthworks overheads, they do a nice job adding some clarity and definition to your cymbals, a big step up to be sure. For the kick I prefer the D112 to the condenser mic, especially in the pre-eq comparison, although maybe placement has something to do with that? It might be fun to experiment with some different mic placements and see what that does to the sound. How many inputs does your interface have? Can you run both the condenser and the D112 mic together in the mix? Maybe throw the i5 on the snare side too? I'd be really curious to hear this comparison if you get a new interface!
Overall I love the design of those little DM20's for the toms, low-profile is awesome!
Yo! Gabe! Question! What kind of setups are you using for I Prevail in all the different situations you guys are in (studio, music videos, etc.). I always love seeing how stuff goes on behind the scenes with bigger bands.

Wish the levels were matched better. The new mics sound much better, but they're also much louder.
I hear you, the reality is these mics are just straight up a lot louder than my old ones (which I personally love). I probably could have tried to match the levels a little more though.
@@DrumBeatsOnline makes sense. Volume heavily colors our perception of sound though, so it's a bit of an unfair comparison. But the new mics do sound killer and I'm jealous!
what's the mic on your hi hat in the old drums clips?
Usually tom mic's are scouped in the mid range a little, and a snare mic has some mid range to it. So I'm curious if those tom + snare mic's have the same eQ curve or if one is for the snare!

The earthworks mics have a much broader frequency response that does sound really great, but because of that fact, you also need to be weary of the low end (especially in the snare) of becoming too over powering.

Drum Beats Online I figured! Instead of boosting the fundamental on the snare, maybe just leave it flat, and pull up more snap around the 5k range. That’s just my two cents though. Regardless, your drumming is always phenomenal and I can’t wait to see more with the new setup!
Right off the bat, wanted to say I admire the sweet video editing and the mics do seem to make a BIG difference compared to your before sound. That being said, I would like to share my skepticism about your recording technique. Yes the old mics sounded duller in comparison, but that should not discourage anyone from thinking that you cant still get some amazing sounds from the old set.
I understand you said you are not the most audio savvy, so I'm not putting your style down - I just question how effective of a comparison was made.
Were you gain staging to match levels? How much processing changes did you make to affect, dynamic contrast, freq resonance, phase, in/out level in signal chain between two sets? Did placement change? How much did placement change?
To me the new mics just sound louder and that could be for two reasons:
1- the characteristics of these mics are naturally brighter and thus no amount of level matching will change how loud they sound
Or
2 - Gabe didnt level match and we just like it more because it sounds louder - more in our face
And yes, sometimes we are tricked into thinking the sound has improved when really all that was changed was how loud it was. But The cheaper pro audio gear tends to lose it "shimmer" after bout 10 years, so maybe it is a good thing he invested in the earthworks.
Anyways, just another opinion in the melting pot - keep up the good work!!
Hey Issac! Thanks for the thoughts my friend. First of all, I totally agree with you! You can totally get some great sounds with cheaper mics/cheaper interfaces. I’ve been doing that for 5 years! And just to put this out there, I’m not trying to sell these mics. I’m simply sharing my new gear with you guys as I start to make upgrades and changes. That’s what this whole series is about!
In terms of your questions: I don’t think the levels are matched post production. The were the same output on my interface, but these mics are just genuinely louder than the ones I had before.
In terms of EQ and processing, they are actually pretty much the exact same as well as microphone placement.

The mics sound great and a lot more natural. Somehow the audio in the video sounds a little biased towards the right side and the left side was a bit stuffy with both sets of mics. I think its the interface but that could just be me. I know of 2 good interfaces (the price gap is huge.). There's the Focusrite scarlett 18i20 but I've heard you can get extremely clean signals out of the Audient Asp 880. But you know you can just talk to the guys and gals at sweetwater they won't steer you wrong.

The Earthworks sound great, but they're also about 5dB louder than the old mics in each comparison. If you reversed that I'm sure a lot of people would reverse their opinion. Don't get me wrong- the Earthworks are incredible mics, but level disparity is a classic way to exaggerate differences. Stereo salesmen are known to boost the volume on speakers they are trying to sell. Whenever I notice it I assume the person demonstrating has an agenda.
Good observation!..Increasing the volume gives the false impression that they sound alot better even if they were just a little different.

I have similar mics as you used to have. I bought the AKG for 40 bucks. 3 overheads for 50 bucks, already owned a 57 and 58 and a AKG condenser mic. Got another 57 coming up, bought it for 50 bucks. I bought new heads for my kit as well. But my cymbals are kind of cheapish so send me a nice crash hehe

One more thing, I'm seeing a ton of comments complaining about how expensive these mics are. 3K for 7 mics that sound this great is a steal. I get that it's a lot of money, but it's not a lot of money for micing a drum kit and having it sound great. Check out videos of drums being miced at somewhere like Sunset Sound. Sure, they're using a D112 on the kick, and a 57 on the snare, but they're using U67s for overheads, I've seen a video with just the odd pair of vintage 47s kicking around recording room reflections. I have a small garage studio. I'm not wealthy, but I am blessed enough to have a pair of Peluso P12s for overheads, so just my 2 overhead mics, which I also use for certain vocals, acoustic guitars, piano and some other stuff, and those 2 mics cost the same as this entire kit. If you take the Sunset drum micing price tag in to account, if they use the 67s up top, you're looking at close to 10 grand just for overheads. Add in those 47s and you might be looking at 30 grand to mic the damned room. Finally, why are people so mad that Gabe has nice things? He's worked his tail off to put himself in a position to be successful. If one of the rewards for that sacrifice is a $3,000 set of drum mics, well so be it. My first drum micing set up, I could only record 2 channles at once and I had a pair of cheapo overheads. I'm glad that I sacrificed other things I wanted because I wanted to get great recordings more than those other things and over years, I was able to upgrade. Never begrudge anybody who works hard their success. If you want the same success, set some goals and be willing to give up as much as they did to chase them down.
This is a great demonstration of what Earthworks can truly do to a drum kit.
I don't play drums but I am an audio engineer that loves miking up a drum kit. I have used almost every different drum mic. Earthworks are the first to definitely change the sound for the best. I can make most drum mics sound the same (for the most part). But not like the earthworks. They blow all the others away. A real game changer. I do still use either a Shure Beta 52A or an Audix D6 for the kick. I did buy the kick pad to go with my SR20LS but haven't used it yet. The only time I had the opportunity to make use of it I put the SR20LS on the high hat (perfect). I also have 2 SR20 mics. They are killer too.
A huge bonus for live sound: I often use 1 overhead (sometimes 2) and a kick mic live. Sounds like the whole kit has been mic'd up. And only 2 (or 3) cables needed. Earthworks was/is famous for the DK3 recording set. It's 2 overheads and a kick. Used in studios.
Fyi, these mics work for EVERYTHING! Drums, vocals, guitar cabs, bass cabs, acoustic guitars, horns, etc.... I even used one to mic up a Leslie cabinet. I have a DK8+ kit. It's a DK7 that I added the 5th DM20 and an Earthworks Kickpad. I needed to fill the 2 open spots in the case.
Simply put, these mics are a great investment in sound.

Not dropping 4k on mics bro lol. I can take my Shure mics add some effects and EQ to literally match the same quality if not better and the clamps for these mics are ridiculous . Not sure why they could not design a better clamp to hold $4k mics lol alot people have complained about them popping off

I don't know if Earthworks mics sound better, but what's sure is that they're way louder in this comparison, not very relevant so...
your old mic honestly sounded just fine but the new mics do have lots of presence and clarity. For me though the difference isn't worth the $3k price tag. For me the point is play what you can afford. Every mic sounds a little bit different and you can get good sounding quality mics for half that.

3k is actually not unreasonable for these mics. Compare that to a set of industry standard studio mics for drums (MD421s for the toms, RE20 or D12 for the kick, etc), and these are a little cheaper...and better looking, easier to position, and possibly even better sounding. The old mics in this video are not junk at all, but you clearly get what you pay for.
bass and snare mics are the most noticeable difference, toms not so much.
It simply proofs to me that you don’t need a new expensive set of microphones to record your drums. Your old microphone set compared to the new Earthworks mics sound just as good, if not better.
