Honestly don’t know what to make of this since we might as well be stepping into fanfic territory, but let’s roll back to GoW 1, there was a red vortex when Ares showed up to help Kratos with the barbarians. Although if it is some sort of trial that might explain why the red-themed Hades realm was such a pain to go through. Come to think of it I never realised until now just how similar it is to Valhalla
From what we know as of now with the higher plains. Whatever controls this existence is choosing which gods ascend. Valhalla may have shown a glimpse of what kratos has already experienced when he was falling with mimir. I won’t be surprised if this series ends with the reveal of ares ascending due to the fact that his body became a nuke, therefore he too may have found improvement where he did not before.
The vortex was above the home because that is where the blades were. Something is up with the blades, potentially about how they came to be (including the cutscene). Surtr said promordial fire? Interestingly enough, in the Norse mythology in the beginning there was... order, kind of? There was no big churning chaos, but fire and ice that politely sat on their own ends of the Ginnungagap. Until they started to interact and that spurred everything into action.
Funny thing is, the oldest primordial of all, is Chaos. My theory is that the Blades of Chaos were imbued with a fragment of Chaos itself. And the old, ancient primordial is slowly waking up as kratos uses it outside of greece. Chaos is trying to reach further out and destroy all, sewing Chaos.

The 2018 novel stated that red skies & vortex were a result of Atreus dying, so I assume since he is half-Greek his death could result in chaos spreading.

Honestly the thing that got me to think that Athena IS just Athena in GOW 3 is when Kratos lists "deceit " as one of the fears in the box. Also I think when Mimir says "Higher Plane" they mean a higher level in distance. I think this because it goes from normal norse realms, to the primordial realms, to Greece, and finely to the top of Olympus; the highest part of Kratos' Valhalla. Also I'm pretty sure that we fight Tyr where we fight Zeus in God of War 3 at the top of Olympus, not sure if anyone noticed this or if I'm wrong though. Thanks for reading my thoughts, great video!
A part of me thinks the higher order of gods are supposed to be on another level but then i remembered how Athena who is now on a higher plan of existance was terrified of Kratos when it looked like he was going to strike her down.

I think a higher plane of existence may be related to emotions, it's a bit of a stretch, but colors are often compared to emotions and you have, for example, Red is anger, blue is hope, and green is greed. after all, the most powerful force in the universe is emotions, which even govern gods. And here they show the green Athena who wants to grab everything for herself and the green rift that made Odin greedy and only think about her. In the comics you have blue-eyed Athena who guides Kratos towards the hope of a new life and Thor, who regained hope that he can fix everything, went to a higher plane of existence in a blue glow. and of course you have Kratos who is fueled by anger because he had to retrieve the blades of chaos and was also angry that he was cheated and mimir almost got killed because of him. What if the Higher plane of existence are the deities of emotion and Kratos will have to face these three deities throughout his journeys. in the first series Kratos faced anger, in the second he understood what hope is and maybe in the third he will face greed
God of War connected mythos theory (based off of Gnosticism): Personally, I like to believe that in the GOW mythos, on planet Earth there are rifts in between the different pantheons, and these invisible rifts originate from the higher plane of existence (which is where the demiurge is contained by the Monac). These rifts act as sort of mythological containers and separators. Each rift hold the unique geography, creation myths, spiritualities, magics and pantheons of each mythology. (This could also be why the rules of the Norse pantheon might not affect Kratos or Atreus). { Pleroma > higher plane > rift > physical universe (earth) } When people expand in the name of their gods, they also expand the rift (and therefore influence and territory) of their specific mythology. This is why wars are fought between cultures, because each pantheon is trying to gain more territory and worshipers over other pantheons (this would be the demiurge influencing the physical world). But most gods of these different pantheons are ignoring the possibility of peace, diplomacy and cultural exchange. This could allow all of them to grow simultaneously and achieve enlightenment. This could be why the Monac is collecting worthy gods who show selflessness and are sending them to the higher plane. However, some gods in the higher plane fall to the influence of the demiurge. (because of their new found power) like Athena. The higher plane of existence acts as a further test to see if the chosen gods are worthy of entering pleroma when the time is right.
You have a point because in gnosticism there are two gods you got yaldabaoth the evil creater god aka the god of the bible and you got the monad the divine conscious of which we are apart of because if you know what if the higher existence is us reached a state of enlightenment and I don't think morality matters it's not about becoming Worthy it about us achieving self-awareness of who we truly are it not about looking outside to find god you just have to look inward to realize that you are always enlightened don't look for enlightenment because you are already enlightened we all have the ability to become gods and goddesses we don't need to worship gods or look for any gods because we are god
You do realize that the old testament god is yaldabaoth because in gnosticism the story of how the world is made is different than main stream religion the stories are being told from the perspective of Adam eve and Jesus and have you watched morgue official he talks a lot about gnosticism higher consciousness and knowledge
My biggest concern was how Kratos was so cool with the void, the red rift, why was he so cool with what was going on? I don't think it was so simple as he relied on the mechanics of Valhalla.
Come on, it's Kratos we're talking about after all. Whatever it was in that vortex, Kratos would kill it and climb out of it or kill the vortex itself 😂.
@@colored433 you're so right but hear me out. Game dev: so what's our explanation? Oh he's to angry to die and he is chill cause he knows death. Dude, that's to easy and Santa Monica has proven again and again they subvert expectations. There is definitely more to the first climactic than meets the eye.
The Vortex also looks like the Votex inside Pandora’s box (during cinematics when Hephaestus is explaining the box to kratos)..the camera pan zoomed inside the box you can see the same vortex
I think that valhalla and the higher planes of existence are connected in a deep way. I predict that valhalla was created first as a test of sorts for higher beings to determine wether they would be fit to rule then somehow it was cast out to the Norse pantheon. Valhalla demanded a sacrifice to enter the higher tier stages and I predict this is why the vortex formed over kratos' house atreus was the sacrifice to the realm but just like valhalla kratos chose sympathy and refused the offer and angered the realm. I believe the mural depicting kratos' death is still yet to come and will be near the climax of the story to use your analogy. Atreus sacrifice kratos will be similar to doctor strange giving the time stone to Thanos to save Tony but by doing so saving the universe Atreus will have the choice to sacrifice kratos to open the vortex to save the universe/pantheon or choose sympathy and sacrifice the pantheon instead.
It looks like the Spark of the World that Surtur fell into when Surtur became Ragnarok in the main game, except the one in Valhalla is red instead of blue. The Spark of the World is where the realms came into existence, therefore the red version in Valhalla could be where everything ends; or becomes "non-existent". It could be the punishment for those who try to break the rules of the trials of lower Valhalla. Which if that's what it is, it would make sense why Mimir and Sigrun were panicking when they saw it; and why Sigrun was punished by Valhalla too for saving Mimir and Kratos from that fate. Becoming non-existent is worse than simply dying or passing into a realm for the dead. There is no way to retrieve someone if they're erased from existence completely.
This makes perfect sense, and honestly I feel like it would be somewhat common sense to anyone who's played the game even just once.. I wonder why a GOW RUclipsr couldn't have put this together?
@@TheQuadraticAttenuator Thank you, but it's just my own head canon theory. But when I played this recent DLC, I immediately thought this red vortex looked like the Spark of the World from the main game. Just a different color.
I believe it was kind of obvious that it was baldur who blew the horn. They never wanted to revisit it in ragnarok/valhalla, and it is unlikely that they will do so in the future as the norse god of war is over. It could simply be baldur as he was the only other person who had an interaction with the world serpent.

@@dethwolf890 the mask may be some sort of test from the gods in the higher plane of existence and when someone succeeds in that test (which atreus did when he didn’t accept the easy knowledge from the mask) they will reach out to him and bless him with powers or position in that realm. Idk maybe that could be the premise of the atreus game or im just reaching too hard.
That was literally the point. Atreus broke the mask because they didn't deserve to have it, not after everything Odin did to obtain it. All the answers will come in time, it's not important and we don't need to worry about it.

I don't know if you'll see this but the same red spiral that happens in Valhalla and when appears above kratos house appears when Ares descends from the skies and when kratos kneels
Since the horn was mentioned, I have a much more simple theory for the horn that will probably disappoint many people because they've already hyped it up in their own heads. Now, after GoWR, after having fought Thor, and leaving a wound that couldn't be healed on him, and the main theory being that because Jormungandr swallowed the axe and imbued it with it's poison, something that was once again referenced in the Atreus/Sindri portion of the game, and given how Jormungandr is Thor's "nemesis", that the reason Thor's wound doesn't heal isn't because of the axe itself, but rather, the poison on the axe. More specifically, Jormungandr is a giant, and Thor is half giant, so it isn't a big leap that his giant's blood is what makes the poison effective against him, especially since the axe doesn't leave similar wounds on Baldr or Odin. Following this logic though, it would leave incurable wounds on Magni and Modi, since we know it affects Thor, and they are his sons, meaning they are 1/4 giants themselves. So, after finding the corpse of Magni, who Kratos killed with a blow from the axe, Thor or Odin would naturally see that the blow was fatal thanks to the poison (something that doesn't make Modi's death lose any logic, if we follow this theory, because he in turn is killed with a knife made by a giant), and would likely go call on Jormungandr for either of 2 reasons, to try and get revenge, which could be explained by either he didn't answer the call of the horn, or they realized he wasn't the one who needed to be killed in that moment, or the second reason, to question him about the poison. Now, we're told no one can speak it's tongue, except for Atreus, who figures it out because that's his power, but you know who else happens to know the language? Mimir! And who did Mimir work for? Odin! And who has the sole motivation of learning everything he possibly can, and wouldn't pass up the opportunity to learn (even secretly perhaps) anything he can learn about the ancient language of the giants? Correct again, Odin. Now, why would he have taken the time to learn the ancient language of the giants? Well, for one simple reason, the mask is written in languages he can't understand, and as Tyr he very confidently states that the mask wasn't made by the giants, so, it seems he ruled them out somehow, and what better way to do so than by seeing if any of the languages on the mask are giant languages? So I believe Odin knows how to talk to the snake, and he questioned it after finding out someone killed Magni with a weapon infused with the snake's venom.

I thought you were going to say that the one other place we had seen that red vortex was in the the space between where Sutr became Ragnarok. But it's convenient that you made the connection to the moment Kratos went home and got the Blades of Chaos, because, as Sutr noted, the Blades have primordial fire in them. The red vortex, I believe, is the primordial: The realm from which all things originate. The green light, as Atreus notes when he is first shown the rift, is "knowledge" -- perhaps a mental primordial in contrast to the red physical primordial. And it should be noted that the blue light is most prominent during the selfless death of a god: When Athena dies defending Zeus, when Thor is killed by Odin, and especially when Kratos attempts to kill himself and releases hope back into the world. This, the realm that surpasses both physical limitations AND the conventional logic of protecting one's own existence, I believe is the higher plane.
I looked at it for Tartarus. It looks exactly depictions of Tartarus in other mediums and everything Kratos sees was supposed to based on the individual.
I don't know why but I have this feeling that in 20+ years from now, in the last game or something we'll get an interestelar kinda of plot twist and we'll know that Future Atreus was behind everything trying to save Kratos and his family
it's also very similar to the vortex that Ares emerges from in gow1, when Kratos calls for his help. Even if he says them "coming down from Olympus". What if Ares had to do with the higher plane of existence👀
I’m surprised that no one has mentioned how kratos steeping into the light of alfeim changed him. I think it’s a way bigger deal and could explain a lot his visions in future series.
You said that the dialoge about the higher plain had to mean something but i dont think so because in the entire game it seemed like they create dialoge and plot points but dont think it through. Even in gow 2018 with the "who blew the horn". They just put ideas in the game because they think its cool or something but they dont think deeper about it. English isnt my firat language so i hope you understand what i mean.
I have a theory that Kratos, the now god of hope/war in the Norse pantheon, will go back to Greece. Where he will find Apollo has taken over after Zeus' death, returning from his exile (The one you theorized in your apollo videos). He will find that the Roman Pantheon is at war with the new Greek pantheon. Kratos will settle the war in some way and gain respect, like Tyr did when he ventured out. This would be a cool reason for Kratos to go to other mythologies too, to settle disputes or conflicts, to follow in Tyr's footsteps.
Just a theory, but when the Greek Gods died, they (for the most part) unleashed disasters on the world. When Atreus was dying, because of his bloodline, we see a similar vortex. That vortex may be pure chaos, and if Kratos were to die, it would be unleashed. He is the one thing keeping it in check.
I feel like athena was picked for kratos since she symbolized wisdom and was seen as a trusted person, since he was so willing to trust her, because she was one of the more trustworthy greek gods he interacted with.
@KaptainKuba I have noticed something very interesting while playing gowr again, I have noticed that the dialogue suggests that the jörmungandr that fights with thor in the game is different. Mimir: he didn't follow us from midgard, curious. Kratos: The snake looks different. Atreus: it is different Pls check for yourself The jörmungandr in midgard and the jörmungandr who fights in asgard are different
Just a shot in the dark, what if kratos’s emotion when he is very distressed spawns the red vortex in the Norse area somehow and whoever blew the horn wanted Jormangand to help close the vortex before too much damage is done and what we saw in Valhalla wasn’t the red vortex but instead kratos memory of falling down into the realm of hades just mixed with the power of Valhalla, after all kratos isn’t a Norse person his magic died with Greece so whatever new magic he gets for being a god in a foreign land could do unknown things, we’ve also seen that every god is born with a unique god ability and to say kratos just lost his because Greece died doesn’t make sense so what if the abilities alter depending on the pantheon realm they decide to live in. I’ve no clue if any of this could be right I never read the comic but I have seen the videos of the lore for god of war games so this is my Hail Mary theory :)
here is a random idea of what that vortex was. It was Tartarus. Tartarus the entity that is. Tartarus is in some mythologies said to be one of three primordial beings from the greek myths, some of the first to come into existence. So its plausible that tartarus survived the demise of the greek world, as he predates it. Tartarus is actaully following kratos as he passes through worlds, lost in the void between and drawn to the blades.
Theory video Considering faey could see the future and knew kratos was the factor for Odins downfall makes me wonder if she truly loved kratos or used him
She didn't know. She believed it herself. The giant's vision were that Kratos would die at Ragnarok. Faye believed he could change and make the right choices and live. She's the one that painted the worshipped Kratos panel on top of the one showing his death. I don't think Kratos would have really changed if her love had not been real.
There is actually an easier possible answer for Athena "not being there" thing. It's that she really isn't, that these higher plane beings manifest themselves as projections of the mind. (IIRC) In GoW3 no one interacted with this higher being Athena other than Kratos.
Kratos envisioned Tartarus for his crimes of almost sacrificing Mimir, and making a decision that is right in line with old Kratos. He just threw Helios head in the cage no thoughts at all, simply cause it was in his way. Of course it’s speculation from me, I’m interested to see where that is and what means what from here on out.

@@KaptainKuba yeah man😂, surely they were boring but we can't deny the fact that they were one of the most powerful beings in Gow universe, they easily imprisoned Aegaeon the Hecatonchires.
I'm gonna be honest, the fist time I saw that vortex i thought we fell into Hades because it reminded me of how Hades looked in GoW 1. My head was in full greek myth mode and the fact that Valhalla is a type of afterlife made connect the dots.
I agree, Tartarus was the first thought. To me this scene confirmed that Kratos's soul will return to his own world if he die
This makes the most sense to me, everything ain't all that difficult, I think they were simply falling to hell and their physical bodies were in the process of being banished there for breaking the rules of Valhalla
The 2018 novel stated that red skies & vortex were a result of Atreus dying, so I assume since he is half-Greek his death could result in chaos spreading.
that was the vortex above his house , this one look way more bigger and maybe just an aesthetic choice for a none material realm . something like a void fissure to an immaterial realm or to none existence / chaos itself
That actually makes sense in hindsight, I wonder what disaster would've happened had he died

I could've sworn i heard a quote from Cory that said something about it being only one real answer, the person that was looking for Kratos at the time (Baldr). Bc at the final fight, he said "i knew hurting the big snake would get you guys out". So he knew that they were on good terms with Jormungandr. Likely didn't answer Baldr when he blew the horn to ask

Thanks for reading my thoughts, great video!
if you focus on the stories mimir tells in this dlc you can tell that he is from folklore
A part of me thinks the higher order of gods are supposed to be on another level but then i remembered how Athena who is now on a higher plan of existance was terrified of Kratos when it looked like he was going to strike her down.
That was just surprise, also remember when Zeus died and he went to the "higher order" he literally destroy all the weapons of Kratos with just a little lightning and he broke Kratos neck with one arm

What if the Higher plane of existence are the deities of emotion and Kratos will have to face these three deities throughout his journeys. in the first series Kratos faced anger, in the second he understood what hope is and maybe in the third he will face greed
after going through many of the theories in this comment section and also several other videos I think this one is my favorite
God of War connected mythos theory (based off of Gnosticism):
Personally, I like to believe that in the GOW mythos, on planet Earth there are rifts in between the different pantheons, and these invisible rifts originate from the higher plane of existence (which is where the demiurge is contained by the Monac).
These rifts act as sort of mythological containers and separators. Each rift hold the unique geography, creation myths, spiritualities, magics and pantheons of each mythology. (This could also be why the rules of the Norse pantheon might not affect Kratos or Atreus).
{ Pleroma > higher plane > rift > physical universe (earth) }
When people expand in the name of their gods, they also expand the rift (and therefore influence and territory) of their specific mythology.
@@JustinJulian-00the "evil creator" is specifically the old testament
“In moments of crisis, panic does nothing”
Kratos literally crawled out of Hades, which looks very similar to the void, twice. I think he’s beyond being frightened of death
Kratos has been on Hell's borders so many times that this one doesn't phase him too much.
This is your best theory so far for sure. Hard evidence, good connections and some good arguments. I think you might be right here.
Well, when I saw that red vortex in Valhalla I thought that it was simply Tartarus, and didn't think about it any further
Same haha
Atreus sacrifice kratos will be similar to doctor strange giving the time stone to Thanos to save Tony but by doing so saving the universe
Atreus will have the choice to sacrifice kratos to open the vortex to save the universe/pantheon or choose sympathy and sacrifice the pantheon instead.

finally I can know what it is, welcome back Kap

I have a theory that it has something to do with Odin or something. Because during Ragnarok when Thor dies, the vortex appears yet again
I just figured the vortex was the result of the gods of Asgard being real ticked off at the death of Magni, and Modi fleeing after his attempt at revenge. Or, it was the result of some power within Atreus activating as his nature fought within himself.
Kratos ha already met primordials so the only thing left higher that is shared in several mythologies is Chaos. Its function and form is eerily similar across many myths including the base myth of most of the eastern hemisphere; Proto-Indo European.
Theory: Valhalla and Utangard or however it’s spelled are part of the same place. The Ascending Sands look similar to the Utangard scene, and it would explain why Odin couldn’t control Valhalla.

Maybe Atreus breaking that mask will end up causing him to have powers from it or similar to what the mask was supposed to contain
@@dethwolf890 the mask may be some sort of test from the gods in the higher plane of existence and when someone succeeds in that test (which atreus did when he didn’t accept the easy knowledge from the mask) they will reach out to him and bless him with powers or position in that realm. John Kratos 💀

In God of war 1 when Ares came down from Olympus he appeared out of a Red vortex from the sky
I'm sad we didn't see freyr in Valhalla
We already know of a Higher Plane. It makes just as much sense for a Lower Plane to exist as well.

While watching the video I noticed that some lines almost looked like Celtic Knots at the center of the vortex.
I think they were falling into the same thing Surtr fell into. The spark of the world.
that Athena ._. was hilarious
I’m pretty sure Baldur blew the horn to battle the snake so he could get Kratos and Atreus attention

They were going to the part in Hellheim, where you cannot come back from
Theory video
Considering faey could see the future and knew kratos was the factor for Odins downfall makes me wonder if she truly loved kratos or used him
She didn't know. She believed it herself. The giant's vision were that Kratos would die at Ragnarok. Faye believed he could change and make the right choices and live. She's the one that painted the worshipped Kratos panel on top of the one showing his death. I don't think Kratos would have really changed if her love had not been real.
W theory Kuba
There is actually an easier possible answer for Athena "not being there" thing. It's that she really isn't, that these higher plane beings manifest themselves as projections of the mind. (IIRC) In GoW3 no one interacted with this higher being Athena other than Kratos.
Kratos envisioned Tartarus for his crimes of almost sacrificing Mimir, and making a decision that is right in line with old Kratos. He just threw Helios head in the cage no thoughts at all, simply cause it was in his way. Of course it’s speculation from me, I’m interested to see where that is and what means what from here on out.
