This video posted 6 yrs ago and just saved me a TON of money, frustration, and stress. This little rugger piece created so much havok and took 30 seconds to fix. Thank you!!!
Life saver!!! Came on here to learn how to fix the switch, move my mat and boom there's the rubber piece on the floor. Threw some mounting tape on it and ordered the part. Atleast I don't have to remove the fuse when I go to the grocery store tonight. Lol
You literally saved me when no one knew what it was. Thank you for posting this...could not figure out what was wrong with my car and was completely devastated until my fiancé saw this. Only cost me $5!! You're the best!
I have been having the traction light coming on and slowing me down on the highway. I raised the brake pedal with my foot and saw this video and said man I am glad I wasn't the only one. Thank you so much you saved me from the headache.
Same exact car and story! I just went out to my car and looked and my piece has a hole in it! The brake light stayed on and so I did what you said. I put my foot under the pedal and pulled it toward me and the light went off! I was going to take it to the dealer in the morning, but after this I'll be heading to autozone instead. I can't believe i came across this! Thank you SO much for this video! 🙌
Thank you im a lady with no man around to help me fix it. I discovered in the evening when it got dark and too late to do anything and because of your video I was able to use some paper the smart thickness of the rubber and it worked!!!!!! That way I wouldn't have a dead battery and can get it fixed properly in the morning. Thank you so much. Xoxo
Same problem, but with additional symptoms: ESC warning light came on, loss of power (just temp), but would happen at random times, no cruise control, all electric windows stopped except the driver's door, and brake lights will not go off. Going to replace the small plastic pad and see what happens. If it all works after that, I will edit this post. BINGO! Replaced the rotted out rubber spacer with a fir clip. All of the above work again flawlessly! Hardest part was trying to get the fir clip into the small hole on the brake lever. Had to cut it shorter to get it in. Awesome fix! I am sure a dealer would have replaced entire ESC module, and maybe the transmission! Thank you!
You just saved my life and my pocket with this video. Mine just started doing this yesterday so I’m going to disconnect my battery until tomorrow and get that stopper. My brake lights being on all night was was running my battery down.
Thank you! Saved me a $$ trip to a mechanic. Came home today and noticed the breaks lights on our 2012 Sorrento and it was the plastic stopper broken off.
Thank you for this tutorial. I went into stress mode but kept my head on by googling the problem for my Kia Optima. Your fix came up and I was able to follow your instructions. I appreciate you for this because I could have easily came out of $200 plus dollars at the dealer. I felt empowered to fix my own car for $8.00. Thanks again.
@@kaneshea5775 I found one at Auto Zone but it’s rubber not plastic like the KIA original. Had to shave the back for a proper fit. Just installed it so not sure how it’s going to work out. You can google “ Brake Light Stopper “ and find the hard plastic kind for sale. Good luck.
Thank you for this video. This just happened to me after 180k miles and was able to get the part from the dealer and fix it under 1min. You're a lifesaver.
Thank you so much for your video. You are a life saver. We replaced this part today because we lost power while driving and our brake lights wouldn’t go off during our 7 hour drive on vacation. How devastated we were before seeing this video and fixing the problem. Only for KIA to act as if this isn’t normal.
I'm so happy to hear, it does get pretty scary....especially while on vacation and away from home. Something so simple can freak anyone out.....glad this video help!!
Hey man. I cannot strees enough this video saved me HOURS AND MAYBE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS on my 2012 Forte. Called the dealer for the supposed recall and it hadn’t arrived here in Puerto Rico. So desler wanted me to diagnose, which we all know what that means. Stumbled upon this video. Called The desler again and got the rubber washer thing for 4 dollars OEM. I actually found the rubber pieces in the floor upon inspection. Thanks for the info. Also the part number in the comments section helped a lot.
Dude you’re the best! Just picked the part and the guy at auto zone put it on in under 60 seconds !!!! You saved me so much money the dealer wanted to charge me 600 dollars!!! And I got this fixed for 8 bucks! Thank you again.
Thank you so much for this video. This problem exactly happened to me. I checked that rubber pad, and it was deteriorated and fell apart. I bought another one on Amazon, took me 2 minutes to put on once I figured out best way to get to it. I was going to have my electronics analyzed for $180 an hour! You saved me lots of money!Thank you!
Exact same brake light issue. As soon as you mentioned the lose of power I realized that's why it was groggy. Then I saw your replacement part, that's the rubber thing I saw on the floor. Thanks for the video!
I appreciate this video. I inserted to Wendy’s salt packets as my padding a few months ago and forgot about the issue. It started again and I found this video glad to know the pad can be bought instead of the switch. Thanks a bunch!
You are a life saver. I had spend $100 on a new battery & go thru 2 weeks of headaches with this problem thinking its was a major fix. Again, thanks for everything!
LOL ME I JUST UNPLUGGD THE LIGHTS BUT COULDNT GET TOT HE BRAKE LIGHT BEHIND THE REAR WINDSHIELD AND MY BATTERY FRAINED LIKE A MONTH LATER BUT JUST TOOK IT TO RECHARGE.. NOW I GOTTA TEND TO THIS.. 😭😞
Thank you so much for this video! We made an appt. at the dealership for 8 am this morning, but saw your video last night. Got the part from the dealership and did the work ourselves. Pretty much 5 seconds to install. Excellent video and excellent instructions. Everything is fixed!!! Again, thank you!
You rock man. Had the same problem except it turned out my entire brake light stopper switch was just loose and the rubber piece just wasn’t close enough to fully engage it. So i just needed to adjust and tighten it. But I never thought about the brake light controls as being a kill switch for the lights instead of a button to engage the lights. So I was worried about faulty wiring and all sorts of possible bigger issues. So thanks for helping in the right direction. Didn’t cost me a cent. 😁
thank you so much for this video. I had this problem with my 2015 Kia optima, turbo edition I was in panic mode my boyfriend watch this video instantly the brake light goes off. Thank you so much for this video you saved me from unnecessary repairs or even trading it thank you
Brooooo thank you!! I almost gave up hope cus I just changed my battery since I didn’t know it was the brake lights that killed it. Good thing I realized my brake lights were on before I headed to the house. And I watched three different videos before hopping on your video and it fr saved me. It saved me from buying another battery and it saved me cus autozone was boutta close in 45 min and I had to rush there to get the rubber piece you explained in your video! Man you are appreciated all the way from California!!
Hey man! Thank you, had to get jumpstart twice in two days, car started dying on the road home tonight, I finally noticed the back lights were not going off, watched your video after my googled search and just like that, I got it unstuck, lights off...tomorrow is the fix.. Thanks for the post, really helped
You are a saint. My Kia Forte 2012 had the exact same problem as you described and fixed. Same power lose issue for a moment. When I looked where you pointed out, I found that my plastic stopper had crumbled into several pieces. I fixed the problem with a piece of square plastic and some tape. I will have to keep an eye on it, as I live in Florida and the heat will destroy tape. I will work on a more permanent set up.
Thank you sir! I had this issue today with my 9 year old KIA cerato(forte) Koup. However all the car shops were closed, so I had to improvised at least for the rest of the day. Instead of the rubber parts, i put 1 coin (1 euro cent) between 2 double-sided tape. It worked like a charm. Tomorrow I will buy the part, after work.
Hey, thanks for your video. The same thing happened to me with my 2013 Kia Optima. I saw another video but I thought yours is a little bit easier to follow because I didn’t use a black clip. I ordered a part to replace it but the hardest part is getting underneath there on your back at 56 years old and trying to push at the same time down on the brake and push that little pin in there. It definitely worked with the replacement brake light stopper. How on earth were you able to push the brake pedal down at the same time while trying to push that stopper in? I had the hardest time doing it and thanks to my son. He came over and he used my cane to push down on the brake pedal because there was no room for him to actually push it down in the car after being so cramped
Thank you for this video. I have a 2013 Kia Optima and had the same issue that was draining my battery and causing me to lose power. I went to Auto Zone and the guy wase nice enough to put the one they had in stock on, but it did not fit properly and popped out the next day. I went to the Kia dealership and purchased the correct one for my car for $8 and went back to Advance Auto and they put it on for me. Thanks!
Thanks! On our way to the dealership ($5.29 part) but Brandon Kia wants $100 to install it for me, oi. I REALLY appreciate you sharing this video as my 2012 Optima has been doing the same exact thing since yesterday. The little rubber stopper practically fell apart in my friend's hand (she's automotive-ly brilliant, unlike myself, and will be replacing it for me. I owe her AND you.)
Thank you! Same issue. Do you or anyone know why that also would kill the acceleration? I understand the brake light issue impact but noy getting why the intermittent loss of acceleration thatcalso happens and why this would also solve that?
Thank you so much! Your Video made my day..20 min fix! used a Dime & Nickle and tape and the lights went off. The little black thing had a hole in it just like you said. Well done!
Wow, just had the same issue today with my 2012 optima. No power when accelerating and I was fearing an expensive fix and had scheduled shop to look at it tomorrow for $150 diagnostic fee minimum. Got home and noticed break light still on in garage after parked. Thought it was parking lights at first. Reached through window to push cars ignition button to turn electrical system on and car started! ( car should not start with no break being pushed). Reached down to pedal and noticed it was still engaged. Googled this issue and found your video. Saved >=$150. thanks!
This helped a great deal. It saved me so much great time cos i was worried to see my brake lights on whenever i get ready for work. The quick fix was so grate. saved me about $85 not to talk of the distance to my dealer and the time. Kon that was a great video u did
my 2012 Kia Optima has been nothing but problems lol but its paid off and i dont want to buy another car. Thank you for your video and explaining what's wrong with your car because it is exactly what my car is doing.
Thank you for this video...my car started doing the same thing on the highway. I thought it was the transmission but I was losing power and I noticed my brake lights were stuck on when I got home. I replaced the rubber stopper with a golf ball marker (if you play golf, you know what these are) and the brake lights turned off. It’s perfect because it’s circular and has a nub on the bottom that fits into where the rubber pad goes. I’m going to glue the old rubber pad onto the ball marker, and will never have the brake light issue again 😎
Thank you brother, I have a 2006 Kia optima and it just started doing that, I had to replace my battery, cause it was completely dead. So I got home with the new battery installed, I relaxed a little while and my neighbor told me my brake lights were on ..you know the rest...thank you.
I had the same problem with my 2012 KIA optima but it was causing the computer to get confused. my car started out with intermittent brake lights staying on so it was hard to diagnose the cause. I was getting " hesitation on acceleration" when the brake lights failed in the on position. Finally the part broke completely and Firestone Mechanic fixed it in a couple of minutes. He said this should fix your hesitation on acceleration also and that he had fixed a number of KIA optimas with this same problem. He was right! Have not had this acceleration problem since his fix! I told KIA head service wrighter about this and he said he had never heard of it! Go figure????
Was about to panic, then watched the video and it was the exact issue. Saw little pieces of plastic under the steering wheel in the morning, didn't think much of it. Only later realized that was the brake pedal stopper than disintegrated. Got a replacement and replaced it in a minute!
You are awesome. Thank you for sharing this! I used a zip tie through the hole and the sensor is hitting the zip tie head. Seems to be working. Thanks!

thanx for sharing bro I have 2012 optima had same problem watched video this morning went got stopper lights went out 10.00 fix places was quoting me 100.00
Hey mr. Kon thanks for this video really helped me figure out what my issue is now. My question to you would be where did you purchase the replacement brake stopper from? I've looked on O'Reilly site, autozone & advanced auto parts they all dont seem to carry. Haven't tried the dealership yet. Only because I'm working the late night shift. Anyway they'd be awesome if you could provide that information as well. Thanks sir again awesome video. Really helped
Thanks. I just had the same problem with my Kia Rio. Only thing i found my stopper on the floor mat broken in two. I'm using double sided tape until i can get the replacement stopper in the morning. The only thing I'm worried about is that you said you had difficulty driving home when it first happened...did the breaks stop working?
All you need to do to permanently resolve this issue is remove the old rubber grommet and super glue a penny to the side facing the brake switch push rod.. that way the plastic rod won't eat a hole in the rubber.. then super glue that back to the area where it came off from and v ualla! Instant fix for life
I literally just paid Kia $800 for them to not fix my issue. I am soooooooo mad and happy at the same time. I couldn't find "brake light stopper switch" but I did find "Dorman Brake Pedal Stop Pad 74015". Can you or someone tell me if that is the part?
I’m having the opposite problem all 3 brake lights won’t come on! I checked the bulbs fuses and replace the brake switch and nothing. Any suggestions? thanks.
You are fricking awesome!!!!! Thank you sooo much for the explanation and video!! Reached down to take off the part and it crumpled in my fingers. Thanks again!!!!
I just started having an issue where I'll hit the gas and my 2012 optima will not accelerate at all. Then I realized my brake lights wouldn't go off. I was told it might be an issue with traction control system because the tc light would come on after driving a few minutes. Did you have any more issues with power after replacing the rubber piece? I just did a temporary fix with the rubber piece you were talking about and the brake lights are off now. But I am curious if this is actually the fix
This video posted 6 yrs ago and just saved me a TON of money, frustration, and stress. This little rugger piece created so much havok and took 30 seconds to fix. Thank you!!!

Where did you get the part
This RUclips video saved me going to the dealer you are the best and deserve 1k likes 🍻🎸
Thank you brother, I have a 2006 Kia optima and it just started doing that, I had to replace my battery, cause it was completely dead. So I got home with the new battery installed, I relaxed a little while and my neighbor told me my brake lights were on
..you know the rest...thank you.
That was the same thing that happen to me, i replace my battery and the last 2 days my brake lights were on.
I had the same problem with my 2012 KIA optima but it was causing the computer to get confused. my car started out with intermittent brake lights staying on so it was hard to diagnose the cause. Thank you ! Had the exact problem with my 2012 sx (same color btw). Been removing the brake switch fuse for 3 days 😂
Thank you for this video! I made a temp fix but can you tell us what the part is called or the part# we need to order from KIA? Thanks again!!!
Sir, you are a real MVP. That was exactly the problem of my kia forte 2011. CHEERS
Thanks!
This was extremely helpful. Thank you very much for taking the time to post this.
Amazing. Thank you for this video!! Thought it was the break switch but it wasn’t lol
Man thank you so much, this saved me a trip to the mechanic! 👍
Hi, can you please tell me what piece it is! I’m in this dilemma now!
Thanks!!!!!!! it helped me with my 2012 SX. Mine was $1.80 picked it up from my local hyundai dealership
Great info, ...you helped a lot!
I’m wondering . Did you scan at any point and get turbocharger codes ?
Thank you thank you. The exact thing happened to me. I am by myself and when things go wrong I panic. I ordered a replacement and changed it. It is now working😂
Thank you so much you saved me so much money on this video

AMAZING! Something that small for * dollars causes that much trouble . It jsut happened to my 2015 KIA forte. Thank you for your video!
For the record this is also a recall on some optimas and fortes, check with your local dealership!
I replaced the rubber with a smooth steel bolt head with a lock nut on the other side of module mount.
No more wear or wiggle problems.
Thanks for sharing this is a life saver!
Did you buy piece from the dealership?
What is the name of the part? Where did you get it?
Hi! I am having the same issue! Did your traction control light come on/stay on at any point?
That’s my question too! I’m experiencing all the same things but my traction control light keeps coming on and off also!
Yes it did come on. It eventually thinks something’s wrong......but it did go away after the fix.
Yes it did.
Yes mine is
Thanks for posting!!!!!!! Great fix. Looking at 21K hits this is a common problem.
Really helped
pokirk75 I got it from the dealer.
pokirk75 I'm really glad that helped Thank you.
Kon Champ No thank you I literally just switched it out yesterday! Awesome video again
$5 problem solved. Very cool, thank you sir.
Where did you get new piece from?
Sharmelia White I got the stopper from the local Kia dealer for about USD $6.
Ok. Thanks!
Thanks you saved me some money 😊.
Man you are a hero, what is the name of that part
Lifesaver! Thank you so much!
Man good looking out on this video saved me a bunch of mo yea thanks again
All you need to do to permanently resolve this issue is remove the old rubber grommet and super glue a penny to the side facing the brake switch push rod.. that way the plastic rod won't eat a hole in the rubber.. then super glue that back to the area where it came off from and v ualla! Instant fix for life
I literally just paid Kia $800 for them to not fix my issue. I am soooooooo mad and happy at the same time. I couldn't find "brake light stopper switch" but I did find "Dorman Brake Pedal Stop Pad 74015". Can you or someone tell me if that is the part?
Do you have a link to purchase these?
I’m having the opposite problem all 3 brake lights won’t come on! I checked the bulbs fuses and replace the brake switch and nothing. Any suggestions? thanks.
This helped me so much thank you!
Where did you purchase the replacement part from
Shantoria's World it’s in the messages above. You can easily find them online or at the dealer.
Thank you!!! Same issue on my 2012 SX
Thanks for the great and helpful video, big thumbs up!!
You are fricking awesome!!!!!
Thank you sooo much for the explanation and video!!
Reached down to take off the part and it crumpled in my fingers.
Thanks again!!!!
I had the same problem. Thank you very much for the video and explanation!!
There is a recall dated September 2018 on the brake stopper pad for 2012-2013 Optimas.
I really apprecited for this video, thanks so much, i fix the issue of my car that was having the same issue
Thank u, I’m having this problem right now as i speak
Only my third brake light works the other 2 brake light have new bulbs any clue how or what cause both brake lights to go out
I just started having an issue where I'll hit the gas and my 2012 optima will not accelerate at all.
Julie Y yes it is the fix. Traction control will go away. It thinks you are braking and pressing the gas to drive.
Gotta love RUclips. Thanks alot man.
I had the same problem, thank you.
Thank you. This really helped.
What is the piece called?
