      Yeah, I’m from Oregon, loved to wear Nike, I’m a Ducks fan (Nicknamed “Nike U”) but I’ve rapidly changed to an adidas guy, especially after I got into Hockey. Now the only Nike stuff I wear wear is the Ducks gear I own. All else is adidas, because I have yet to find evidence that they use child labor. If all else, I’ve already got a small UA collection.

    Taken from a 2014 ESPN article- "The Blackhawks have been really genuine and open about meeting with the community and investing in the community," Podlasek said in a phone conversation. "More importantly, they're interested in learning about our culture and heritage rather than assuming what they've learned in the past is right."
    Podlasek has helped forge a relationship between the team and Native American soldiers. The team has honored them before games, including in the playoffs. There is a wall at the Trickster Gallery dedicated to this connection.
    The team has also invested with the American Indian Center, giving money and taking part in a dialogue." I've been a fan since the 80's, I'll continue to be no matter what they decide to do with the logo.

      Under new leadership, the AIC ended their relationship with the Blackhawks organization a few years ago. I think in 2015? Just an FYI. So, I'm not sure how much education they still do at games. There's a really great article on The Athletic (Unfortunately behind a pay-wall) by Scott Powers that shows the different perspectives.

      There was a recent article in The Athletic titled "Is it time for the Chicage Blackhawks to drop their Native American logo?" from June 25th by Scott Powers thats a pretty interesting read. Essentially it says that those relationships have broken down, and it was painted as if it was coming from within the Native American organisations with division between members, some who approve of the logo and working with the team and others who disapprove and wanted to cut ties. Really interesting read if you have the time. theathletic.com/1888307/2020/06/25/is-it-time-for-the-chicago-blackhawks-to-drop-their-native-american-logo/

      It's always white people initiating things like these, voicing what they think is the default opinion of the given minority. It's so silly. This has caused a Swedish team to investigate a pontential name/logo change. They're simply called Indians, and the logo isn't redskinned or anything, just an indian. "Blackhawks" is a reference to a specific individual. It's not a slur. He's remembered (and taken as a team name) for his admirable, heroic qualities. It's not a slur. _There is nothing wrong with it._
    If someone's outraged about this "issue," they're just wrong. And you just have to tell them that they're wrong. They'll keep going otherwise.

    • @starchmonkey
      @starchmonkey 4 года назад +7

      Lmao how delusional do you have to be to think that the Blackhawks logo is somehow a dedication in "honor" of the real person. It isnt, its named after a military infantry division that has actually nothing to do with Chief Black Hawk, leader of the Sauk and Fox, a tribe traditionally located in the Great Lakes region, and later forced to live elsewhere. Apparently McLaughlin, the guy who named the team, either didn’t see or ignored the irony of honoring his army’s enemy with his hockey team’s name. The team’s official position is that it adopted the nickname of McLaughlin’s Army division, not the name of the Sauk and Fox chief. Context is key

    For me, as an NFL fan, the Redskins are a completely different situation to the other native american named teams...the word redskin has been used as a slur in the past and Native American organisations have come out against it (i remember a Superbowl ad a few years ago as an example). It's very hard to argue that the team is "honouring" the native american culture when it's the people who you're "honouring" are the ones campaigning against it.
    I don't believe the Blackhawks is offence as, from what I've read, the name is in honour of a particular person...however, I'm a white guy and it's not my place to say what is and isnt offensive to another community.

    As a Blackhawks fan, I like that the team has hosted Sak tribal dances before home games, particularly in November. If the team wasn't named after Chief Black Hawk, I probably wouldn't have bothered to read about him.
    Also, a bill was introduced in the Illinois state senate in February to require that sports teams in the state need approval from a tribe within 500 miles in order to use native imagery, however I think this is mostly aimed at high school and college football teams, though.
    I'm not going to say whether the logo is offensive or not, that's for the Sak people to decide, really, but I think there's a genuine attempt for it to *not* be seen that way. The Washington NFL team definitely needs to be renamed though, same with Cleveland's baseball team.

    Fun fact: I worked with a Native American gentleman who was a DIE HARD Redskins fan. The name didn't bother him at all, he thought of it as a badge of honor, even.
    Fun fact #2: He told me that, in certain Native American cultures, "redskin" isn't an insult. The name, again among certain tribes, is derived from their warriors painting their faces and bodies with red ochre.
    I think the only name that's really offensive (though I am a white guy, so it's probably not my place to say what people of another race should or shouldn't find offensive) is Indians -- as Columbus called them Indians because he was searching for India. Indians are from India. Native American =/= Indian.
    Blackhawks, Braves, Seminoles, Warriors, Chiefs, etc. are complimentary from my point of view (though again, I'm a white guy so my point of view doesn't mean much on this topic) and are no different than Vikings or Irish or Canucks, even.

Just because someone uses a Native American in a logo doesn’t mean it’s offensive unless they are deliberately depicting it in a way where it’s offensive. The Blackhawks logo, to me, is way far away from that. I’m a Nashville fan, and I absolutely love the Blackhawks logo because it’s such a cool looking logo. On top of that, the name “Blackhawks” may just be one of the coolest name in sports.

I don’t know if that “significant amount” of Native fans compares to the amount of native people that are offended by the name, but nobody does. I just think we should sanity check ourselves before we change the name of the team. Just for the record I, as a fan of the team, would be fine with a name change, but I don’t want the name to change unless we do find out that it offends more Native people than support the name. Lastly the owner of the team loves the name so don’t be shocked of the name doesn’t change, all the team has said is that they will look into it.

    I've been to Native American markets in the summertime, and I remember they would sell Chiefs and Braves jerseys. The Redskins logo is similar to the Blackhawks logo and the Florida Seminoles. Only the name can be deemed offensive. Maybe the Redskins name could be changed to a tribal name. Many Irish are fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, and that's a negative stereotype about Irish people.
    I'm opposed to them changing the name right now though. If the Redskins dig in and refuse, it might stop the nonsense. Someone has to refuse to go along with the mob to stop it, otherwise it will keep going. Most of the people complaining are not fans, and even less are fans of these teams. For the most part, it's outsiders trying to pressure others, and they will not stop. Look at the statues coming down in the USA, no one is safe. If Washington decides rebranding is right, they should tell the NFL they'll do it, but not now. Tell the mob to f-off, and then do it yourself when nobody expects it. Also, many NA are fans of these teams. They always trot out an offended NA to spearhead these attacks, but the reality is most NA do not care. Finally, to me it is respectful to have these names and logos. It seems like the end result of this will be further erasing NAs from our culture. Like with Land O'Lakes logo, they got rid of the native and kept the Land.

  • @FridayDusk
    @FridayDusk 4 года назад

    I am hispanic-indigenous (just stating before I state my opinion) I do find the name 'redskins' itself referring to a native American as offensive (Imagine doing this to any other race or ethnicity). I agree that it has to be changed. I had the same problem with the Cleveland Indians logo back in the day before they distanced themselves from it. It is outdated to refer to them as Indians, and the logo was a stereotypical looney tunes caricature, it is like punching down on natives.
    However, I must admit, I never had the same thoughts for Blackhawks. I understood the basic history behind the name (and I understand it even better now thanks to you) I also think the logo is tasteful compared to other counterparts. I think them using alternate logos (like the hawk or the fighter jet) on their third jersey to show people that blackhawks means different things would be nice. I personally don't mind having native americans symbolism or imagery being used in sports (I think its great that Atlanta Braves changed their mascot and only uses a tomhawk on their logo now, not a fan of teams that sell foam tomahawks but thats a personal opinion), I just think it should be tasteful or subtle. Deciding what's tasteful or not is another matter but I think Redskins is one that isnt.
    At the end of the day, we have to recognize that we have a messed up history. Despite none of us taking part of it in a direct manner, some of us benefit from it, and others are a at a disadvantage because of it. I think its good to talk about whether or not its appropriate or outdated for a professional sports team to carry some of these logos/names. It's even more important that we help these communities that are at a disadvantage. It would be great if the teams that take the likeness of natives to also help their indigenous communities, not as PR, but because they can, and its the right thing to do.
    P.S. There sure are lots of native americans in your comments apparently.

    In the event that we drop the logo, I could see just using the feathers from our current logo as the new logo or a varient of the hawk logo. The name should stay no matter what, rebrand with actual black hawks used on merch like tommy hawk.
