Thanks for the video. I have the exact same bike. With less than 130 miles on it, I cracked my oil pan and dumped all my oil. I traded a BMW GS 800 for the FJ, and discovered very quickly that it is much lower to the ground. Rode off of a curb and high centered, busting it. Lucky to have a cold engine and right near home. Dealer indicated that there was a recall on the oil pan for 2015 FJ 09's. Keep up the great work on your vids. Lots of good info.
I know Yamaha updated the oil pan, but I wasn't aware of a recall on it. The updated oil pan has drain plug on the front instead of the bottom. I've been looking for a skid plate that I like. SW Motech makes a couple styles, but the one I like is out of stock everywhere. Thanks for watching and for your comments.
RUclips has been a great tool for me as I learn about the motorcycle world, so it pleases me to be able to give back, even just a little. Thank you for watching and for your comments.
haha! you used my pics of my bike cratered. i have an updated pan now...they changed the design on it... and i cracked that one too about a month ago. i wrote another blog post on it and now i'm just gonna get a skid plate. i'm that 4theriders guy, btw. :)
Your pics were a real wake up call. That pan is just so vulnerable, even something kicked up from the front tire could take it out. I put a skid plate on it. Nothing is indestructible, but I think it's better now.
Back when I owned an FJ-09 I really wanted to get this crash cage/skid plate combo. I spoke with the creator of this product and he claims the skid plate will resist a lot of damage. higdonion.com/products/yamaha-fz09-streetbike-adventure-cage-textured-black
I've looked at this skid plate / cage combination and it looks like pretty solid protection. Nothing can completely protect your bike and every option is a compromise in one way or another.
Just bought an FJ-09, thanks for the information. Link to the plug for the lazy www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KWEJ7OE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

you sure it was a recall? because i had to pay out of pocket for a new one.
Shopping for my FJ-09 right now and am considering a used one. This is great info and really well done. Thanks man!
Thanks for watching and for your comment. It's a great bike, good luck with your search. Ride safe...
Really good video, this is why I love RUclips. Very helpful information.

Im looking at buying a tracer in the near future. Thanks for letting me know of a spot to check for potential damage on 2nd hand machines.
Thank you. Just bought a 2014 Fz09. Going to do this mod before I ride it again!
Nice mod! Thanks for sharing. Ride aware, and "Keep on keeping on!"

Thanks for the great mod! FYI: My 2016 FJ also has the low hanging plug and gusset so perhaps the side plug is 2017 and newer?
Thanks for posting and with great detail!!
good prevention---ordering plug today--hacksaw ready :) :)
Love it. I learn new stuff with every vid.
Excellent mod, thanks for sharing !!!!
Can you post a link for that saw you used? I would like to buy one.
good idea thanks for shareing
according to the sight glass you have to much oil in the crankcase.
so are you going to change your call sign to Chuckayami?
I've thought of changing it, since I don't have a Kawasaki anymore, but I don't want to cause any confusion. It's just a youtube name anyway...
thanks chuck i like both bikes.kawasaki more my liking seems more of an adventure bike than the FJ9....
It would appear that there is a crush washer on the original sump plug.www.ronayers.com/oemparts/a/yam/546a25a9f87002164cb27fe6/oil-cleaner

Enjoy your fj-09, it's a pretty awesome bike.
What a piece of junk. Seat sucks. Oil plug. What else? I bought one of these n I hate it. Wish I’d have bought a 650 V Strom.
Where do you find a new oil pan for less than 100 bucks. All the ones I seen are 200 plus
Eggs were 90 cents a dozen six or seven years ago, gas was $1.80, McDonalds was affordable ..... Welcome to .... well you know.
Funny ass comment man. It would've helped if I had looked at the length of time ago it was uploaded haha
