Saw Testament, Exodus and Death Angel last night in a smaller city in Canada and they sold out a 1,500 club....Very impressive and they all sounded immaculate.

Bryce, I'm with Butch, thank you man for carrying the torch of heavy metal of your generation. 🤘 My favorite moment out of too many, the way Butch describes he and his buddy listening to Heavy Metal Maniac for the first time. I got chills from my own memories of that again. Thanks, Butch! Ryan and Canz have a way with words among their killer picks. Rob, great story of how you started getting into thrash. Great show as always. My picks would be nothing out of the ordinary. Exodus-arguably created one of the first thrash demos and some of the songs had riffs that Kirk took with him when he joined Metallica. They are one of my favorite bands of all time as well so no brainer. Favourite-fabulous disaster Testament-a really important thrash band still going incredibly strong producing quality consistently. The first two albums are bonafide classics with some the catchiest thrash songs ever with some of the best solos in the genre. A must in my opinion. They have also flirted with other genres showing their malleability. Biggest out of the German 4 and have reinvented themselves several times. Favourite album-extreme aggression Overkill-had to pick one band from the east coast. They had a template and a particular sound but they also could be very doomy when they wanted to. Extremely consistent in both output and quality. Favourite album-horrorscope A common theme in my picks is that all these bands have stood the test of time and have reinvented themselves to stay relevant. Their recent output can compete with the classic albums.
I gotta mention Anacrusis. Their Manic Impressions album is one of the greatest metal albums ever recorded. Proto progressive metal with post punk undertones. Just BRILLIANT.
Great to hear Steve mention Forbidden! Some of my friends say they were the pinnacle at ‘Forbidden Evil’ Also great to hear Mr Alo mention Suicidal Tendencies. Their most underrated album was ‘Suicidal For Life’ in the late 90s. Such great riffs on that one. ✊🏼 Also hats off to Ryan for the Sadus ‘Illusions’ mention. Underrated too. Great show guys, thanks ☺️

Finally finished watching this tonight. Great that Possessed got mentioned; they helped to pioneer thrash, death and black metal all at once. Bought "Beyond The Gates" on cassette at Sam Goody Cross County with birthday money I got from my parents and grandparents. (I recall I was wavering between the new releases from Possessed, Omen and Fates Warning--got Possessed that night but filled in the Omen and Fates albums later on.) You guys mentioned the tri-state area scene and how big SOD were--definitely true, I recall seeing plenty of SOD shirts around and they were played on all the local metal radio shows and got ample magazine coverage. As was the MOD album when that one came out. Another big name on the tri-state scene was Hades from New Jersey; they made a pretty big name in the '80s and likewise achieved plenty of play on the late-night and weekend metal shops. Had to smile when Butch mentioned the Rising Sun in Yonkers--some witty types used to call it the Rising Slum when we were growing up. Never got to go there myself, but we must have driven by it thousands of times over the years as my aunt, uncle and cousins lived off of Yonkers Avenue. Not to mention many trips the Yonkers Raceway flea market (always made a beeline for the record and tape guy and the tables selling cheap metal and rock t-shits) and the good old Westchester County Fair. Thanks Hudson Valley Squares for bringing back a wave of awesome memories!! 🤘🤘
Overkill started before the so called big 4 and if it wasn't for Bobby's love em or hate em vocals would easily be in the 'top 4-5' because they never sold out. Same for Exodus.
Yes!!! Glad to hear someone mention SOD, I'm from Stroudsburg pa and not far from NYC. SOD and MOD were huge with metal heads in my school. Also hearing Razor mentioned and Sadus that chemical exposure album rules.
Great show! Next Big 4 : 1. Kreator. 2. Voivod. 3. Overkill. 4. Exodus. Honorable mention: Destruction, Coroner. All mentioned. Great to see Evile mentioned by Chris
Sacred Reich is definitely in my big 4. Surf Nicaragua is a totally kick ass and fun ep. Love the album cover, it's my phones wallpaper. Ignorance and The American Way are great albums. Their latest release Awakening from 2019 is awesome as well.
Takeaways from tonight's episode: 1. Nick, Ryan, Butch!, Chris A., Rob L., Chris C., (a late arriving) Steve and Bryce loves Metal in the house... 2. "Sorry, I had a friggin' brain fart" 3. "Dave Lombardo said "Hold my beer" and kicked everyone else to the curb" 4. Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga as new vocalists in Metallica??? 5. "Metal as fuck" 6. "We spit on those who like to pose, we thrash with all the rest" 7. "Nick stole all my choices but that's alright cause he's got good taste, that fellow..." 8. "Record label fuckery" 9. Chef's kiss for Dark Angel... 10. "I'm a fuckin' space brain" 11. "If that doesn't make you want to punch your fist through a plate glass window when it comes on, nothing will" 12. "...the German Panzer tank crushing skulls in their set" 13. Lol at Chris Alo - the man who loves him some Venom - calling D.R.I. sloppy 😄 14. "...and some construction worker barking out the vocals" 15. Baloney Metal and Fart Metal sub-genres 16. "Some people go to church once a week; Ryan listens to Seven Churches once a week" 17. "Somebody say Finland?" 18. "It's like Sesame Street with the pinball..." 19. "I just assumed it was you cause it's you" 20. "I know Skow hates it but too bad" 21. "I ran into Nick; Nick ran into me" 22. "You can't fuck with Dan Dan Beehler" As for the topic : let me preface my choices by saying I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was in high school from 1980-1984 so I grew up in the middle of the birth of thrash metal. I went to see all of these West Coast thrash bands before any of them had records out so my rankings are based on their live shows; not on their recording careers: 1. Exodus 2. Laaz Rockit 3. Blind Illusion 4. Death Angel Honorable mentions: Testament (then known as Legacy) Possessed
Blind Illusion, nice!!! I have The Sane Asylum on CD that featured Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde from Primus. Blind Illusion sounds nothing like Primus. I also think that the vocalist on the Sane Asylum sounded a lot like Tommy Victor of Prong.
@@muttonmark They went through so many vocalists until Mark Biedermann said the hell with it and did the vocals himself. BTW, they just released a new album this month. Original Death Angel drummer Andy Galeon is in the band now
Chris Alo: Interestingly, I saw the Kreator/DRI/Holy Terror tour in Montreal. There, all three bands kicked ass. I remember screaming "Alpha Omega" during HT's set and Keith Deen turned and looked at me.
Metal Church are worth considering--of course more a "traditional metal" outfit but definitely flirted with thrash and speed metal, especially on their self-titled debut album. Those jackhammer guitars and stuttering-machine-gun chord progressions always conveyed a sort of thrash "feel" if you will. The band always maintained some thrashy elements, through various eras and lineups. They were pals with Metallica in the VERY early days. Also toured with numerous thrash, speed and crossover bands in the '80s. Quite a few power metal acts routinely kind of kept a foot in the thrash world--Vicious Rumors being another example. (Who have just been joined by Ronnie Munroe of Metal Church fame, incidentally.) Geoff Thorpe has cycled through countless members and vocalists over 40 years, but VR have continually delivered consistently good quality USPM with thrash overtones.
Great to see original HVS back and nearly 100%. But as you proved, Rob and Bryce are worthy participants. Thanks to both of you. I also noticed that you all still have all the love and admiration towards each other as you always have. 🙄 Please don't change.... 🙃 insert quotable line: __________________.
No1 : Testament....The Ritual No 2 : Death Angel.....Act lll No 3 : Annihilator ....Annihilator 2010 No 4 Metal Church....Hanging in the Balance . Great show guys 🤘👍
Tankard, Sodom, Razor, and Coroner for having mostly excellent discographies with some real standouts! Went on consistency as two of my favourites only made a handful of albums (Sabbat and Deathwish)
Great to see Bryce, Butch and Nick back on! Great topic. I gotta say that Butch's picks are a bit baffling since 3 of them aren't even Thrash but they're great bands anyway! 😂😂 Favourite quote of the episode so far is Nick's mention of Jon Schaffer! Night of the Stormrider is the GREATEST Thrash record of the 90s that isn't usually 'labeled' Thrash. So if Butch's picks are allowed, I'd throw Iced Earth into the mix.
And I thought I was pushing the genre limits with Exhorder lol. Slaughter In The Vatican is pure thrash and in my top 5 favorite thrash albums so I had to put them in my big 4.
In Argentina, the trash arrived 5 years late. more or less in 1987....in the 80s it was very difficult to get the records. But he always had a huge following and in the late 80s bands started to come out. my Big 4 - Testament -Sepultura -Kreator -Sodom Honourable Mention. Annihilator
Awesome show and great panel. My picks: Sepultura (up to Arise...maybe Chaos AD as well) Sacred Reigh (even their last album is great) Kreator (saw them live in Athens, Greece back in 2005 and they kicked ass) Sodom (Agent Orange is an amazing album, so powerful) Honorable mention: Exodus (could also easily be in the top 4)
I'm a Canadian, so was lucky to see Razor live at least 10 times (both with Sheepdog and Bob Reid) and can confirm they seriously kick ass in a live setting ... as well as on record. Hail!!!
Great show! Dropping some great NW thrash bands from back in the late 80s and early 90s in my neck of the woods - FORCED ENTRY, BITTER END, PANIC, WEHRMACHT, MACE, STRYCHNINE, FAUSTUS, DEAD CONSPIRACY and SAVIOR. Also a California/Washington one with the great. late (R.I.P.) David Wayne - REVEREND!
Devastation's last 2 albums were great back in the early 90s, Nuclear Assault as well, one or 2 of those guys went on to form Harter Attack, I wonder if Steve Keeler can remember that band.
Testament was one of my favorite bands of the thrash era. Seems there is no love for "Practice What You Preach." One of my favorite thrash albums all time. I felt this was their Master of Puppets. Chuck Billy's vocals just amazing.
Hey Pete, inspired by this episode, I decided to check out more of Testament. I picked up a few cds from the library and included in one of the them, Dark Roots of Thrash, was a live concert DVD recorded at The Paramount Theatre in Huntington, NY in February of 2013. I'm curious if any of the HVS personalities were in attendance that night? Also, I didn't realize what beasts Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick were on guitar. I was familiar with Testament but never went beyond a casual listen due to my distaste for the vocals. They're actually a really good band. Thanks for doing this episode.
Pete is wearing a Death shirt! Never understood why this band is not discussed constantly on SoT, pretty sure I have never even heard them mentioned but nice to see a shirt at least. Some faves I did not hear mentioned: Watchtower, Anacrusis, Mekong Delta, Toxik, Nuclear Assault, Vio-lence, maybe D.R.I. as kind of a hipster pick (if S.O.D is allowed)
A couple of amazing lesser known thrash albums: Hypnosia - Extreme Hatred Infernal Majesty - None Shall Defy Coroner - Every damn thing they did Demolition Hammer - Tortured Existence Morbid Saint - Spectrum Of Death Protector - A Shedding Of Skin (Death Thrash but still - SO good)
Massive fan of Dark Angel's first album, "We Have Arrived", specifically the songs "Falling From The Sky" and "Welcome To The Slaughterhouse." Jack Schwartz, the original drummer, was very underrated.
Elitists/gatekeepers can call me a "poser" all they want, but traditional metal has always been my favorite genre of metal. For thrash, I only listen to Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Flotsam and Jetsam, Annihilator and Exodus. I could never get into extreme metal(black, death, grindcore, etc)
@@KevinQ1989 I’ve never been into metal though and I’ve listen to quite a few of these bands through friends, but I never connected to any of it. It’s just not my cup of tea. I was more into British punk, post punk, shoegaze, psychedelic and Prog. I like a few progressive metal bands like Fates Warning and Opeth though, I never liked one black metal band I’ve heard.
@@sspbrazil then you have to listen Hateful Abandon, a mix of almost all the styles you listed, but mostly post punk, the first is a mix with black metal but a little bit
Big 4 Classic - Exodus, Overkill, Testament, Death Angel Big 4 Revival - Evile, Warbringer, Lazarus AD, Powertrip Brand new: Go check out Assault - A Blind Eye. You will not be disappointed.
Sorry for the novel .... but here goes. After seeing Nick and Ryan choosing Razor I wanted to relay this story. I'm 52 now ... but back in summer of 1983 I was between grades 9 and 10. Me and a buddy Shayne would hang around downtown Kitchener Ontario Canada trying to be early Metal dudes. We started hanging around this music store named Joe Carlo music. Many times dropping by there and hangin with the owner's son Dave and a blond haired guy named Stace . Obviously they turned out to be THE Dave Carlo and Sheepdog. Several times they played us an upcoming ep .. their first album called Armed and Dangerous. They were very cool to a couple of young brats .. and they gave us tickets to a show at the Chicopee Ski Club in Kitchener. They were opening for a band called Sidinex. Their band name was the guitarists last name backwards . Phil Xenidis. And yes that's Phil X who is now in Bon Jovi. Anyways my unforgettable moment is standing on the stage doing young punk thrashing and Sheepdog playfully hit me in the forehead with a hammer. Lol . My first truly Metal moment. . You can't make this shit up . Glad to see Razor getting love
I noticed you mentioned Blessed Death . Havent found too many others that even know them . The album Destined for Extinction is filled with "chef's kisses" for me ;)
Pete and Steve completely nailed it. Testament, exodus, Kreator, and overkill. 100% those would be the big 4 if there wasn’t one already. There were a ton of other great bands mentioned but I think those fall into the realm of a personal top 4 favorites list rather than who would actually be the top 4
You guys won’t believe this, lol. I just got back from my local record store in Ann Arbor, Mi after listening to you guys and picked up Exciter, Heavy Metal Maniac on vinyl, awesome. Btw I’m 55 yo and was going to all the metal shows in the 80’s in Detroit. Thanks for bringing back the great memories 🤘🤘🤘
My top 10 thrash albums (big 4 excluded) 1. Pantera- Cowboys from Hell (yes, it is thrash) 2. Overkill- Horrorscope 3. Testament- The New Order 4. Forbidden- Twisted into Form 5. Artillery- Terror Squad 6. Sepultura- Arise 7. Destruction- Release from Agony 8. Sodom- Agent Orange 9. Vio-Lence- Eternal Nightmare 10. Nuclear Assault- Something Wicked (their more groove-oriented one, but still my favorite) Answering the big four question, I'd vote Overkill and Testament, because to me they have the best discographies overall. Even though I don't like Exodus very much, they could have priority for being one of the oldest, as far as I'm concerned. I can't really decide on the fourth, I like the others about equally. My heart says Forbidden, but they were pretty late to the game, to be honest.
I listen to thrash quite rarely and there's not many discographies I've been arsed checking out in full, but I've still got favorites. My big four would be (my favorite Thrash metal band ever) Sodom, Dark Angel (Darkness Descends), Exumer (Possessed by fire) and old Sepultura. Honorable mentions: Nekromantheon, Obliteration, Equinox, Tankard, Annihilator, Testament, Exodus, Evile, Corroder.
Awesome show and an eclectic mix of pics. My pics (with fave album) Testament - The Gathering Overkill - Horrorscope Forbidden - Twisted into Form Exodus - Tempo of the Damned Honourable Mention = Onslaught - In Search of Sanity
Saw testament exodus and death angel in april at starland ballroom in new jersey. Saw rich catino taking photos! Right against the baracade and got a fist bump from lombardo!
Testament, Angelus Apatrida, Havok & Exodus. Honorable mentions: Generation Kill, Power Trip, Vio-Lence, Municipal Waste, Warbringer & Gama Bomb. Side note: The new Megadeth: The Sick, The Dying...And The Dead is 2022's best thrash album, it's killer.
Great show, thrash is my favorite genre. My other big four. 1) Testament : I like all of their album, even the one I like the least Demonic is ok. Favorite "Souls of Black". 2) Death Angel : Great band. I don`t think they released a bad album either. A bit strange favorite pick here "Art if Dying" 3) Overkill : I think they released 5 great albums in the 80s and early 90s, then they did it was going a bit up and down. But their last 5 albums are also really great. My favorite is "Horrorscope" 4) Xentrix : From England. Sounded a lot like early Metallica and Testament. But who cares? That is my favorite kind of thrash. Their two first album are riff heaven. I also like all of their album, except Scourge that was not very good. My favorite "For whose advantage?"
Thrash is a genre that transcended international boundaries so decided to pick bands originating from four different countries: 4. Voivod 3. Sepultura 2. Kreator 1. Testament - also love The Ritual, Dark Roots of Earth is my second favorite Testament album
Your Voivod pick reminds me of another great Canadian band Sacrifice. Forward To Termination and Soldiers Of Misfortune are great albums. The Ones I Condemn from 2007 is one of the best thrash "comeback" albums I've heard.
Pantera are always considered "groove metal" wich is like a "post-thrash" thing for me, I think you can put them on a list of thrash metal bands for sure Sepultura's Beneath the Remains and Arise are thrash metal classics no doubt The Blackening and Unto the Locust from MH are the best examples of "modern thrash" for me
Christmas on Earth festival, Leeds - December 1988: Megadeth + Nuclear Assault + Overkill + Kreator + Cro-Mags + (VoiVod turned away whilst entering the country) + Laaz Rocket + Virus ........ so a lot of the bands mentioned all on the same bill. Mine would be: Death Angel - greatest thrash show I ever attended; Evile (from the town I live in); Celtic Frost (although they stretched the envelope beyond thrash); Slammer (from a city 7 miles away). .... and Obscura was mentioned too, who I saw 2 nights ago (with Persefone and Disillusion opening).
God damn thanks to Christ to his mention in his big 4 for Evile. my ass is still sore, what a nice discovery. Enter The Graves kicked my ass solidly, the downside he has the same voice as Araya it probably harmed the band. But the music, Holy Shit so powerful. A very good sounding album.
All Dark Angel fans: not only are they the most underrated thrash band in the history of the multiverse, I have to give a shout out to guitarist Eric Meyer, who is a friend of mine and about as cool a dude as you'll meet! Support them and live a louder life! Thanks Pete and ALL the excellent people on the Squares! Vast knowledge mixed with likeable personalities🤘🤘🤘🤘
Ya know you're right. Shit, they gave a shout out to Tom. Tempesta played drums. It was Rick Hunolt who was the special guest, on guitar. Thank you for the correction! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
@@Ihatecensorship1 no problem man, I just remember Zetro talking about it on his YT show before it happened ! So cool you got to see that show though man !!!!
i will tell you right now Anthrax will NEVER be in my big 4. im not sure who i would pick as an alternate big 4 i would have to think about it for a good while, but definitely Overkill would be one of them. and i still consider them in Anthrax place now.
Nuclear Assault, Flotsam and Jetsam, Death angel, Holy Terror (in my world they'd have a few more albums) great line-up music fans! Good to see Butch back. Great to see Bryce join you for this one!
I saw that same overkill SOD show at L'Amour and had a couple beers with Billy Milano at the bar. Hey Butch what do you think of the new Stryper song Transgressor, HAF
Okay here’s my big four of thrash that isn’t the big four. 1) Exodus. The album I’m picking is Fabulous Disaster. This album contains the Toxic Waltz. Nuff said. 2) Carnivore. Pete Steele was and is a metal legend. I could’ve gone with the debut but I’m gonna go with Retaliation. This is a band that would get so much controversy today if they were around. So many memorable tunes. But my favorite on it is Inner Conflict. 3) Sepultura. Love these guys their sound changed and they got really heavy over time. The album I’m picking is Arise. The whole album is really awesome and if I have to pick a favorite tune it’s Dead Embryonic Cells. 4) Suicidal Tendencies. A truly iconic band that started punk and got more metal as time went on. I’m picking the album How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today. A truly great album that has some ripping songs on it. My favorite track on it by far is Sorry. Such a bad ass song.
Great picks. Lights...Camera...Revolution! is my favorite Suicidal Tendencies album. You Can't Bring Me Down is a classic track. Rocky George's solo on it shreds.
Thanks again for having me Pete, great time!

+1000. Coroner's discography is absolutely insane.
Venom, Exodus, Overkill, Testament. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

You guys never cease to amaze me with the knowledge and passion. Thanks for sharing. SOT is a daily watch for me... great vibe.
Sacred Reich is definitely in my big 4. Surf Nicaragua is a totally kick ass and fun ep. Love the album cover, it's my phones wallpaper. Ignorance and The American Way are great albums. Their latest release Awakening from 2019 is awesome as well.

As for the topic : let me preface my choices by saying I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was in high school from 1980-1984 so I grew up in the middle of the birth of thrash metal. I went to see all of these West Coast thrash bands before any of them had records out so my rankings are based on their live shows; not on their recording careers:
1. Exodus
2. Laaz Rockit
3. Blind Illusion
4. Death Angel
Honorable mentions:
Testament (then known as Legacy)
Possessed
Amazing post! Had me both laughing and saying "fuck yeah" in my head.
Original Death Angel drummer Andy Galeon is in the band now
And also, Christian is one quiet dude. Unless I'm mistaken, his first spoken words came at the 53:44 mark.
No1 : Testament....The Ritual
No 2 : Death Angel.....Act lll
No 3 : Annihilator ....Annihilator 2010
No 4 Metal Church....Hanging in the Balance .
Great show guys 🤘👍
Tankard, Sodom, Razor, and Coroner for having mostly excellent discographies with some real standouts!
Went on consistency as two of my favourites only made a handful of albums (Sabbat and Deathwish)
Speaking of Butch's comment to Bryce, today someone I know who's about Bryce's age was watching a cardie B video, I just shook my head in disgust.
Ikr. Motorhead? Machinehead?
@@scottricci5063 Blame it on the bourbon! 😂
@@MofosOfMetal How about not understanding what the genre is?
And I thought I was pushing the genre limits with Exhorder lol. Slaughter In The Vatican is pure thrash and in my top 5 favorite thrash albums so I had to put them in my big 4.
In Argentina, the trash arrived 5 years late. more or less in 1987....in the 80s it was very difficult to get the records. But he always had a huge following and in the late 80s bands started to come out.
my Big 4
- Testament
-Sepultura
-Kreator
-Sodom
Honourable Mention. Annihilator
Awesome show and great panel. My picks:
Sepultura (up to Arise...maybe Chaos AD as well)
Sacred Reigh (even their last album is great)
Kreator (saw them live in Athens, Greece back in 2005 and they kicked ass)
Sodom (Agent Orange is an amazing album, so powerful)
Honorable mention: Exodus (could also easily be in the top 4)
I'm a Canadian, so was lucky to see Razor live at least 10 times (both with Sheepdog and Bob Reid) and can confirm they seriously kick ass in a live setting ... as well as on record. Hail!!!
Showed up late to Artillery - haven't left since!
I really wish Butch would just listen to others speak instead of chiming in every 30 seconds
Demolition Hammer, Razor, Devastation, Power Trip.
I really love this kind of violent thrash
Devastation's last 2 albums were great back in the early 90s, Nuclear Assault as well, one or 2 of those guys went on to form Harter Attack, I wonder if Steve Keeler can remember that band.
Haven’t seen anybody talking about Havok. Absolutely killer. Tons of great albums and riffs!
Their latest is the best trash production I ever heard - unbelievable.
Testament was one of my favorite bands of the thrash era. Seems there is no love for "Practice What You Preach." One of my favorite thrash albums all time. I felt this was their Master of Puppets. Chuck Billy's vocals just amazing.
That really is one of the best. I prefer The New Order, but only by a slight margin...
That is one of my favorites too. It was my first Testament album back when it first came out so I'm kind of partial to that one.
I actually liked the music, but didn't like Billy's vocals.
I agree plus Louie Clemente's drumming on Practice had a lot of great galloping double kick. fun riffs on that album.
This episode has me even more stoked to see the Bay Strikes Back show later this week!!
Love Nuclear Assault, Vio-Lence, DRI and SOD. Crossover bands should totally be allowed. Great picks man. 👍🤘
Great ep!! 🤘🤘
A couple of amazing lesser known thrash albums:
Hypnosia - Extreme Hatred
Infernal Majesty - None Shall Defy
Coroner - Every damn thing they did
Demolition Hammer - Tortured Existence
Morbid Saint - Spectrum Of Death
Protector - A Shedding Of Skin (Death Thrash but still - SO good)
Massive fan of Dark Angel's first album, "We Have Arrived", specifically the songs "Falling From The Sky" and "Welcome To The Slaughterhouse." Jack Schwartz, the original drummer, was very underrated.
I don’t like thrash metal, but I always enjoy the Hudson Valley Squares and watching you guys talk about the bands you love.
Same I love metal but thrash is not my favorite. I like some bands and some albums but overall the genre is not my thing.
Big 4 Classic - Exodus, Overkill, Testament, Death Angel
Big 4 Revival - Evile, Warbringer, Lazarus AD, Powertrip
Brand new: Go check out Assault - A Blind Eye.
That’s friggin’ awesome! 😳
Armed and Dangerous rules too. A killer debut!
Great show and as somebody who knows nothing about thrash it was very informative.. Checked out Evile and they sound great thanks 👍🏻
Butch is clearly out of his element here.
My top 10 thrash albums (big 4 excluded)
1. Pantera- Cowboys from Hell (yes, it is thrash)
2. Overkill- Horrorscope
3. Testament- The New Order
4. Forbidden- Twisted into Form
5. Artillery- Terror Squad
6. Sepultura- Arise
7. Destruction- Release from Agony
8. Sodom- Agent Orange
9. Vio-Lence- Eternal Nightmare
10. Nuclear Assault- Something Wicked (their more groove-oriented one, but still my favorite)
Answering the big four question, I'd vote Overkill and Testament, because to me they have the best discographies overall.
I didn’t mention any newer bands, but Nekromantheon are definitely near the top of the list. Deathhammer too.
All great picks, given a few Crossover mentions, have to add Leeway, mainly their Born to Expire album
For a second there I thought that Bob Lasanti was Roy Khan! Almost got a heart attack 😂
Great show as always, guys! best crew in the galaxy 🍺🤘
😂😂😂 thanks😎
Awesome show and an eclectic mix of pics. My pics (with fave album)
Testament - The Gathering
Overkill - Horrorscope
Forbidden - Twisted into Form
Exodus - Tempo of the Damned
Honourable Mention = Onslaught - In Search of Sanity
Somebody FINALLY mentioned Forbidden. Twisted into Form is a thrash masterpiece.
Great episode!! Prong!! Can't believe nobody mentioned the band Forced Entry
Great to see you guys again, greetings from Mexico City
Saw testament exodus and death angel in april at starland ballroom in new jersey. Saw rich catino taking photos! Right against the baracade and got a fist bump from lombardo!
Testament, Angelus Apatrida, Havok & Exodus. Honorable mentions: Generation Kill, Power Trip, Vio-Lence, Municipal Waste, Warbringer & Gama Bomb. Side note: The new Megadeth: The Sick, The Dying...And The Dead is 2022's best thrash album, it's killer.
Vio-Lence 🤘Their new EP Let The World Burn Slays. Eternal Nightmare is an all time classic.
@@SuperStrik9 Yeah, they're great.
Municipal waste, yes.👍🏽
Others that weren't mentioned:
Onslaught
Risk
Tankard
Hirax
Xentrix
Znöwhite
Agressor
Helmet
S.D.I.
I had Onslaught in my honorables. Power. Power. Power. Power from hellllllllllllll
@@Ihatecensorship1 Power from hell indeed! See you on Saturday Nicholas! I have a beard and curly hair btw ;-)
Damn. Thought I was gonna have to make a milk carton for Butchand Nick. Making one now for Lynn and Sydney.
Sydney's got the Alice Cooper gig, i guess she is on his staff for the tour, probably won't see her for a while.
Thrash is a genre that transcended international boundaries so decided to pick bands originating from four different countries:
4. Voivod
3. Sepultura
2. Kreator
@@SuperStrik9 never heard of this band. Listening to Forward to Termination now. Absolute thrash! Thanks for the recommendation.
1. EXODUS
2. DEATH ANGEL
3. TESTAMENT
4. OVER KILL
Awesome show! Great to see the love for Testament. The Gathering is one of the greatest albums of all time.
I saw with Exodus and Death Angel few months ago in Boston. And Dave Lombardo was drumming for Testament.
So overrated only because Lombardo plays on it. James Murphy wasn't allowed to make great solos like he did on Low.
King Alo, nailed it!!! Also would give Exodus a shout out, should have been part of the original big 4, IMO..
Love the Coroner praise. Amazing Mekong Delta was mentioned. Probably my favorite band in this genre.
Pantera are always considered "groove metal" wich is like a "post-thrash" thing for me, I think you can put them on a list of thrash metal bands for sure
Sepultura's Beneath the Remains and Arise are thrash metal classics no doubt
The Blackening and Unto the Locust from MH are the best examples of "modern thrash" for me
Exodus/Testament/Death Angel/ Tankard Honorable Mention
Disturbed (from MN)
Cro-Mags made two classic thrash albums back to back…for a hardcore band especially
Nobody ever talks about Best Wishes which CRUSHES.
Evile - very underrated. Check out '5 serpents teeth' 2011
Nick pretty sure John Tempesta played drums for Exodus last year in Vegas, Tom was undergoing treatment at that time.
@@GMHG777 that show was a very happy time because I really thought we were gonna lose all that shit forever after 2020.
i will tell you right now Anthrax will NEVER be in my big 4. im not sure who i would pick as an alternate big 4 i would have to think about it for a good while, but definitely Overkill would be one of them. and i still consider them in Anthrax place now.
1. Exodus
2. Testament
3. Overkill
4. Onslaught
HM: Kreator, Havok, Municipal Waste, Artillery, Annihilator and Angelus Apatrida
Pete, an album homework show with Bryce and Elliott Fullam would rock!!1
Forbidden, Testament, Sepultura, Coroner... honourable mentions : Vio-Lence, Mordred, Metal Church, Overkill
Thanks guys
My big 4 thinking outside the box here:
1 - Exodus
2 - Razor
3 - Kreator
4 - Destruction
HM - Dark Angel
Coroner, Suicidal Tendencies, Kreator, Bolt Thrower
Metal Church, Onslaught, Testament and Obsession.
For me:
Overkill
Exodus
Dark Angel
Testament
1) Flotsam And Jetsam
2) Exciter
3) Death Angel
4) Overkill
Feel The Fire- Overkill
Eternal Devastation- Destruction
Pleasure To Kill- Kreator
Game Over- Nuclear Assault
Nuclear Assault, Flotsam and Jetsam, Death angel, Holy Terror (in my world they'd have a few more albums) great line-up music fans! Good to see Butch back. Great to see Bryce join you for this one!
I saw that same overkill SOD show at L'Amour and had a couple beers with Billy Milano at the bar. Hey Butch what do you think of the new Stryper song Transgressor, HAF
Alo is always thrilled to be there.
Lemmy spoke the truth before every show...We are Motorhead and we play Rock and Roll! God bless him. Destruction is the definition of Thrash to me.
ST album is a classic
Great picks. Lights...Camera...Revolution! is my favorite Suicidal Tendencies album. You Can't Bring Me Down is a classic track. Rocky George's solo on it shreds.
@SuperStrik9 that’s a rad album too! I almost picked that. But the inner Crossover Thrash fan in me got me to pick How.
@Move Play Lift Completely agree. My second favorite ST release
@@nathanwelbourne116 Totally understandable. Speaking of Crossover DRI are in my big 4. Crossover, 4 Of A Kind and Thrash Zone are killer albums.
