The two musician deaths that affected me the most were less than two months apart. In 1980 I was 14 and really just starting to get into a lot of what we now call classic rock, including the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. John Bonham died in September, which effectively ended Zeppelin. In December, John Lennon was tragically shot to death. There have been countless rock star deaths since then, but none affected me as much as those two (although SRV in 1990 was close). It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
Fantastic show, everyone. Like one commenter, got especially hungry when the sandwich question came up. Chicken Parm? Meatball Parm? Hot Pastrami? Yup. That's the stuff! Great one.
I never thought I'd hear Miranda Cosgrove mentioned on Sea of Tranquility ever. I grew up with 'Drake & Josh' and 'iCarly,' so thanks Bryce! Also, I thought that Butch and Karen were going to start a war about 'That Metal Show'! Like wow, they were really into it and I can see both sides of the discussion.
I grew up in the 2000s and I'm glad that I did to be quite honest! 2000s was the golden age for shows on Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. Hey Arnold, Rugrats, SpongeBob, Phineas & Ferb, Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Samurai Jack, Avatar the Last Airbender, The Grim Adventures of Bill and Mandy, What's New Scooby Doo, Camp Lazlo, Teen Titans (the original, not the cartoon crappy comedy, the darker version), Jimmy Neutron, Invader Zim, Star Wars The Clone Wars, Wild Thornberrys, Fairy Oddparents, Recess, Lilo & Sitch, The Proud Family (heard about the revival and I did hear about the controversy) and so many more. For sitcoms, Lizzy McGuire, That's So Raven, Drake and Josh, iCarly, Zoey 101, Phil of the Future, Hannah Montana, Keenan & Kel, Wizards of Waverly Place, and The Sweet Life of Zack and Cody. 2009-2013 for Nick was going well, although a lot of the cartoons were going downhill. Fanboy and Chum Chum is seen as a bad show and Planet Sheen was even worse. Some people would had loved to see Jimmy Neutron again, but nope, the show is all about Sheen going on a planet and living with aliens. Yeah, that's bad. They even had a character like Carl Wheezer, except it isn't Carl Wheezer. Kids nowadays have no clue about these shows unfortunately. And there ain't going to anything like the 00s ever again. I do know that there are more animated studios and they're up in the competition with Disney. Disney isn't the only one dominating anymore, although they own stuff like Marvel, Star Wars, ESPN and Fox. Don't remind me about it.

I agree about Halford, I've never seen an arena packed for an opening act. The Halford album was definitely out though I remember listening to it in the way to the concert. QR were ok, but they were much better when they opened up for Priest a few years later at the PNC arts center
Cheers Pete for reading out my question. Loved the Steve Harris references and Karen screaming like a Beatles fan at War Pigs is not a reaction I would expect. A few of mine (Sorry a bit more mainstream than the Squares) The only time I saw Maiden was in the Di Anno days. The venue had a decibel meter that cut out the electrics when the noise level was reached. Lights went up, band took the stage, crowd cheered. Darkness! Never saw Maiden with Bruce but did see him twice as a guest. Once was with Marillion and they played a song I never expected, Margaret, and Fish got Bruce to sing Mhari’s Wedding in Gaelic! Second time was at Donington MOR in 87. Bon Jovi were headliners an the brought Bruce on stage for the encore, along with Paul Stanley and Dee Sneider. Got to see Tina Turner sing Proud Mary with Jon Fogerty Queen last concert with Freddie at Knebworth. Lights went up in the arena during Radio Ga Ga and my jaw hit the floor at the sight of 180000 fans clapping along to it.
Wow 🤩 ya lucky bastard you! Queen with Freddie in his final days on this Earth 🌎!? Ok so when I was only a 14 year old kid I saw both Maiden with Paul Di’Anno on their first American tour opening up for Judas Priest on the Killers and Point Of Entry Tours on Father’s Day in mid- June and then the next Winter when they both toured again for the Number Of The Beast and Screaming For Vengeance tours. I saw Maiden two more times on the Piece Of Mind down the Cape with Fastway and Coney Hatch opening and again with Iron Maiden on the Powerslave Tour and Rory Gallagher opened in front of this giant Egyptian set which’s kinda hilarious when you consider that he’s a true blood Scot-Irish and they’ve all from the UK? Great episode! Made me think of my favorite sandwich (meatball sub) and deaths affected me the most (Terry Kath, Neil Peart, etc). Yes Pete, I agree, Sydney Sweeney and Alexandria Daddario are beautiful!
I don't think Halford was forgotten at that time. The first Fight album was absolutely incredible. Also it was great to hear the mention of Matt Barlow getting on stage and doing Watching Over Me from out of nowhere. He is a fabulous singer.
I enjoyed the Fight albums too, but they didn't sell well and he was back playing clubs again. Then he did the Two album which completely bombed. By 2000 he was primed for a comeback and delivered with his Halford band, at least sonically but not commercially.
@craigkaminski Yeah I meant he wasn't forgotten in metal circles but yes commercially things weren't going well for him. That "Two" album was brutally terrible..lol I've been hoping for a Priest break because I would love to see those Halford and Fight songs live before it's too late.
Great episode! Thanks for answering my question. Just gotta point out Hjelvik (from Kvelertak) was the singer on Djevel's first four albums. He's probably my least favorite of the lot, even though he did great. After Hjelvik they've had Mannevond (from Koldbrann) and currently Kvitrim (from Vemod) doing the vocals. Kvitrim was the singer at Beyond the Gates, and he's phenomenal! I'd also argue their drummer, Faust (from Emperor), is a bit of a black metal celebrity.
Hey Butch, thanks for defending the commercial reality of the Eddie Trunk show. I think you know because you’ve been in the radio business. The idea that a commercial national television show could just have any kind of crazy format. It’s just ideal thinking. Maybe Eddie Trunks, cheerleading style hosting or his annoying hair could be a true critique.
I'm pretty much with Chris on Judas Priest and Iron Maiden it is hard to pick one or the other. Although I have been listening to Maiden more of late since especially the 80s albums NEVER get old with me. With that being said I feel Judas Priest's discography is a little stronger as a whole especially the more recent material. Judas Priest's last album Flamethrower is a great album for example and I would rank it high on my list of Judas Priest albums.

Great show and some great questions and funny like most of the SoT shows. As a relative newbie to heavy metal I didn't get the sandwich reference, on the prog seat Q&A no one asked what the panel's favourite pastries were, do we need a new spin off show Pete's Deli? Just a couple of random thoughts for possible show ideas. How about a show maybe for the squares of Friday at the Funhouse about bands that suck in concert but are great on studio albums. Also a show about fantasy duets. For example I always wish for a duet with Bruce Dickinson and Paul D'Ianno or a song sung by David Coverdale and Joe Lynn Turner together in concert or on an album. What are your fantasy -Rock n Metal duets,?
We could have a bunch of food debates: Is a hot dog considered a sandwich? Ketchup on hot dogs yes/no? Pineapple on pizza yes/no? Ketchup on eggs yes/no? (for this, the correct answer is NO, as you put either Frank's Red Hot or salsa on eggs 😄)
One of the deaths that really made me feel sad was Ian Gillan's wife. They married about the same time we did and she was about my age. Rock Stars lead such different lives that you don't feel much of a connection even if you admire them as artists, but this is an aspect of life in which we're all the same.

I strongly agree with Butch TWICE in this episode. The Eddie Trunk complaints from Karen were ridiculous IMO. The guy has a national show every day and mostly takes calls from rock fans discussing rock topics. Nobody else is doing that on that level. The tv show was designed to get a wide audience. Talking about death/black metal bands on major tv would not get ratings. I'm glad he brought up Dimebag. I'm always amazed at the lack of interest this panel has in Pantera. They were THE metal band of the 90's. Pantera made platinum albums when the other bands were crying "Nirvana and Pearl Jam fans won't let us be successful anymore". I vividly remember driving to work that morning and hearing of his murder on the local radio (98.9 in KC). It was like hearing a family member was gone. Dime was IMO the greatest metal guitarist of all time.
Good show but I tend to glaze over when sports are discussed.😴😴 You mentioned Linda Carter at the end but what about the new Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot? Absolutely amazing!!
Rory Gallagher at The Old Waldorf...start to finish, all over the stage... Small venue.... all-time favorite...benefite for Ronnie Lane with joe cocker, jimmy page, eric clapton, Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer, drummer and bass player from the stones... Cow Palace.... epic!
45:30 the same person who shits on Eddie Trunk for not talking about new bands don't listen to new punk bands after the golden age of punk, interesting.
When the panels are more than six parties, I find them problematic. There's too much talking over one another, which simply makes it come across as noise. Not the best of shows, but adequate enough to listen to whilst doing chores. Rating: 7/10.
On Zoom there is a mute function. If only the person talking would unmute himself/herself there wouldn’t be any noise in the background. It would totally make sense when having large panels.
Mike Piazza is not only the greatest hitting catcher of all time, he's also baseballs biggest metal fan! Dodgers trading him was one of the worst days of my life.
So why are they closing the chance after all those years open your neck of the woods? that's one of the ones you talked about all the time and Lynn I think work there didn't she? The only big closing I remember up in the Hudson valley was when Ball decided to shutdown and all those jobs are going to be gone 😐

Hear you loud and clear, here in Cali, after 10 minutes of local radio, the only thing I wanna do with my radio is throw it into bathtub, while I'm in it!
You know I kind of got the feeling you were in the Tampa area. I know WC well that's about twenty minutes from me. You were probably listening to the Shark 98.7 which is the more "modern" classic rock station. There's also the "older" classic rock station 107.3 the Eagle, and the long running 98 Rock, which although it's changed "rock" formats a few times, they've been around since I was a kid in the 70's. For historical purposes, they were once the "24 hour Led Zeppelin station" if you remember that being in the news when they played Stairway to Heaven 24 hours in a row on New Years Eve 1989 before going all Zep at midnight. Then they started adding bands eventually before becoming all rock again. In addition, they are also where Bubba the Love Sponge came from though he was at another station before that. They've been pretty terrible for a long time now. We also used to have 95ynf, which doesn't exist any longer, but was 98 Rock's competition back in the day. Their big claim to fame is they were where Ron & Ron started before they went syndicated. Later that became Ron & Fez who was also with them here. That's a brief history of rock radio in Tampa and you are so right it is absolutely terrible now.
Fuck!!! Hammerjacks!! That was it...Thanks!!! The Baltimore Skipjacks were the farm team for the Washington Capitals, I believe! Hockey is ALWAYS on the mind. Dammit, I was sorta close...not really! Lol
@@butchjones3497 Yeah, I was born too late to see the Senators but I was happy when the Nationals arrived. The O’s were our adopted team and I’ve been a fan since ‘72! Hammer jacks was where I saw Crack the Sky for the 1st, that’s how I knew where you were talking about, it was such a great venue/biker bar!!!! Now it’s like a library since it reopened after the fire, just not the same vibe, but like most things these kids will never know what was, you know??? I posted this as a comment on another channel, so I'll paste it here along with a couple of other things: I'll admit That Metal Show wasn't perfect, but you need to remember the time beforehand. It was all a bunch of Jamey Jasta scumbags trying to out hardcore each other, aside from Metallica and Ozzy it was anathema to mention any old school band on mainstream metal TV. Mistress Juilya stands out as particularly awful. Don't get me wrong she was smoking hot, but she was pure try-hard, swear-too-much CRINGE. Metal Sanaz wasn't much better. Who you ask? Exactly. So something like That Metal Show where all anyone ever talked about were lists where Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath were always the top three was frankly refreshing. Mind you Don & Jim were bad in their own particular way, but if they convinced that young generation to put down the Deftones and pick up the Def Leppard High & Dry, fine by me. The only thing I didn't like about the show (other than the hosts) was it didn't do enough to promote the new bands who told modernity to go to fuck itself. Sabaton, Enforcer, Battle Beast, Savage Master, Baroness, High On Fire, Iced Earth, Ghost and that's just from TMS' time on air*. You need young bands doing the old classic style for young people to get into it. That's just how it works. You're seeing this in action now with Ghost and Greta Van Fleet being arena bands. Karen, the reason they called it "That Metal Show" was not to make any bold claim that they are the greatest metal show of all time. I remember in early interviews they said that no matter what name they gave it, water cooler office people were just going to call it "That Metal Show" fleetingly, so let's just call it the fleeting name. It was sort of smart. Sort of. Unfortunately, people like Lamb Of God, Slipknot, Distrubed and Hatebreed DID end up as guests on That Metal Show, which completely defeated the purpose of TMS. TMS existed to tell those bands and their fans that they were poison and to get the hell out of OUR genre. And Butch, Vh1 Classic I wouldn't exactly call mainstream TV. It was a paid cable channel, so they shouldn't have been all too concerned with ratings. It was never a show that was going to be a threat to Breaking Bad. As for Eddie Trunk, I'm old enough to remember Metal Mania, and he was great on that show. The success of That Metal Show definitely did go to his head, and people aren't wrong when they call him out for his "I, I, Me, Me, I know everyone" behavior. I don't have a problem with him not liking extreme metal, but I do have a problem with him not pushing the new wave of classic metal bands like the ones I mentioned earlier, along with Visigoth, Tower, Sumerlands and a whole bunch of others. They're damn near tailor made for him. I don't get it. He's still better than that slimy fuck Jose Mangin though. *I'm not familiar with Striker, so Bryce can correct me whether or not they had albums from the 2008-2015 time period, but if they did they would have been a great new choice to push.
My god, at 30 minutes into it I had to turn it off. This show has been hard to watch since Karen joined a long time ago. I’ve tried but I can’t do it. She’s annoying and so many times of her being rude, especially to Bryce. She says “tired of the same shit”, but it’s always the same shit with her
Girlschool is the greatest all female metal band in history of universe! Hit And Run and Emergency rock hard and fast, both albums are essential purchases!
I like Eddie Teunk. I agree with Butch and totally disagree with Karen. He's not gonna get ratings talking about Mummy and those unknown garage bands . Good job Pete, Ralph , Chris and Butch!
Can't wait for the HVS sitcom: Karen & Skow as a married couple who live with their nephew Bryce, & the rest as wacky annoying neighbours.

They needed to include Ralph in more of these questions
Agree 100 percent. Ralph is consistently great in these episodes.
Most definitely 👍 More Ralph in the show for realzies that is- Love, Ralph
Cheers Pete for reading out my question. Loved the Steve Harris references and Karen screaming like a Beatles fan at War Pigs is not a reaction I would expect.
A few of mine (Sorry a bit more mainstream than the Squares)
The only time I saw Maiden was in the Di Anno days.
Got to see Tina Turner sing Proud Mary with Jon Fogerty
Queen last concert with Freddie at Knebworth.
Maiden over Priest !
I think Butch was thinking of Hammerjacks in Baltimore. Saw many a good show there.
Loved the show!! Good job folks. Sorry to hear that Pete hates the Braves though.
Excellent!
Great
Thanks!

Chuck from Death ! One of the most missed !
Pete you said my name! What a thrill for me! It’s pronounced “Poo-show” but that’s OK! Yay HVS I love you guys!!!!

Hey Butch, thanks for defending the commercial reality of the Eddie Trunk show. I think you know because you’ve been in the radio business. The idea that a commercial national television show could just have any kind of crazy format. It’s just ideal thinking. Maybe Eddie Trunks, cheerleading style hosting or his annoying hair could be a true critique.
lol Eddie Trunk's hair was the least of his problems.
Ambassador Theater, Kiel Auditorium and Mississippi Nights. ST LOUIS MO
The new Kvelertak is great! If you like Leviathan / Blood Mountain era Mastodon, might be in your wheelhouse
I would love to see a show at Madison Square Garden.
Firepower not Flamethrower.
@@jimmypage2843 I realized that after I posted Firepower is the album and flamethrower is a track of the album.
Hardest question for Butch: maybe Ranking the Thin Lizzy catalogue in one of his first episodes
Watching the entire panel come down with the vapors when Karen dared trespass the honor of Eddie fucking Trunk. Omg. Lmfao...

Eddie, Don and Jim did NOT name their show That Metal Show. That's Vh1 for ya!
Great show and some great questions and funny like most of the SoT shows. As a relative newbie to heavy metal I didn't get the sandwich reference, on the prog seat Q&A no one asked what the panel's favourite pastries were, do we need a new spin off show Pete's Deli? I like chicken thighs, drumsticks, wings and breast, but if somewhere was offering chicken "pieces" on the menu I think I'd pass.
The Sword is a great son of Sabbath band.
I'm in the Bryce Fanclub with Karen 😃
But his Black Sabbath ranking video would probably cause Pete to have a heart attack, lol.

There's an idea for a new show... ranking the sandwiches. 😊
A good Chicago Italian beef is always #1! 🎉
I find American sandwich combinations mind boggling. I didn’t understand what they were talking about! It’s far simpler in the UK.
The small club in Baltimore was called Hammerjacks not skip jacks🍻
Wow, Butch likes Hüsker Dü! 👍
One of the deaths that really made me feel sad was Ian Gillan's wife. They married about the same time we did and she was about my age. Rock Stars lead such different lives that you don't feel much of a connection even if you admire them as artists, but this is an aspect of life in which we're all the same.

Funny about that question re: SoT never talking about Girl School. SoT and the HVS are the only reason I know who Girl School are.
I'm with you Karen it should have been the mainstream show
The hardest topic ? This one !
linda carter , Julie Newmar , Doro Pesch Farrah Fawcett celebrity
Nah, Pantera was overrated. I'm a fan, but the lack of interest is frankly refereshing.
Good show but I tend to glaze over when sports are discussed.😴😴
You mentioned Linda Carter at the end but what about the new Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot? Absolutely amazing!!
Rory Gallagher at The Old Waldorf...start to finish, all over the stage... Small venue.... all-time favorite...benefite for Ronnie Lane with joe cocker, jimmy page, eric clapton, Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer, drummer and bass player from the stones... Cow Palace.... epic!
45:30 the same person who shits on Eddie Trunk for not talking about new bands don't listen to new punk bands after the golden age of punk, interesting.
Karen is......well, a Karen.
What's the golden age of punk? What subgenre of punk are you talking about?
Exactly! She’s a joke and talks too much.
Islanders play at USB ! Not Barclay lol
When the panels are more than six parties, I find them problematic. There's too much talking over one another, which simply makes it come across as noise.
Not the best of shows, but adequate enough to listen to whilst doing chores. Rating: 7/10.
I agree that less people is better but it's still fun
On Zoom there is a mute function. If only the person talking would unmute himself/herself there wouldn’t be any noise in the background. It would totally make sense when having large panels.
I agree. And Bryce, Ralph, Rob and Craig were quite restrained. I would have liked to hear more from them.

Would like to hear where Rob was in Florida because the radio here is absolute shite. I quit listening a good twenty-five years ago.
Hear you loud and clear, here in Cali, after 10 minutes of local radio, the only thing I wanna do with my radio is throw it into bathtub, while I'm in it!
I was in Wesley Chapel North of Tampa
That's a brief history of rock radio in Tampa and you are so right it is absolutely terrible now.
it was hammerjacks not skipjacks
Driving is worse in NYC because everyone has a giant car. Roads are narrow and can't be widened

I think someone still makes the Hammerjacks Shirts too, I remember looking up one, but I never ordered it for some reason. I gotta find one. Can't forget that logo!!
I posted this as a comment on another channel, so I'll paste it here along with a couple of other things:
I'll admit That Metal Show wasn't perfect, but you need to remember the time beforehand.
I like the Deftones. they are one of the best alternative metal acts of their era.
