'84 is crazy good, by far my favorite year... Here's my truckload of favorites: 1. Judas Priest- Defenders of the Faith (I've said before that this is my favorite Priest record- a shred fest from Tipton and Downing, dark atmosphere, intensity, classical inspired bits and great chord articulation. A handful of my favorite songs here as well.) 2. Metallica- Ride the Lightning (Also a top ten favorite album. To me this is the album that elevated thrash metal from a songwriting standpoint, already having been the sub-genre that stepped up on the technical side.) 3. Dokken- Tooth & Nail (One of my favorite bands, and second only in their catalogue to Back for the Attack. To me this sounds like perfected nwobhm or the ultimate version of european classic metal like 220 Volt or Heavy Load despite being American. The radio hits are already pretty good, but the deep cuts like Don't Close Your Eyes and When Heaven Comes Down are simply on another level. I like the little stylistic nuances each member adds to the table, with focus on Lynch bringing his unique phrasing element along with the shred... A bit of trivia: on the video to Just Got Lucky you can see footage of George Lynch playing guitar on an active volcano 🌋 in Hawaii. An actual f*ing volcano! Which erupted moments after they left!! Needless to say this is one of the most metal moments of all time, for anyone out there sneering at the glam thing.) 4. Ratt- Out of the Cellar (Warren DeMartini. That is all.) 5. Queensryche- The Warning (Prog metal making its way into the 80's, and it took a while for me to admit I loved this album when I was younger- presumably because odd time signatures and weird blurpy stuff like on NM were things I just wasn't used to to. It's a great example of how a record can challenge your mind, turn you outside of your comfort zone but also intrigue you and make you come back for more. Mindcrime is a masterpiece of its own, but when I'm in the mood for Queensryche I'm not satisfied until I give this whole record a turn.) *Assuming people already know the fantastic Van Halen, Scorpions, Rush, Whitesnake, Dio, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister and Deep Purple records- might I suggest: 1. TNT- Knights of the New Thunder 2. Tokyo Blade- Night of the Blade These I felt bad for leaving out because they're a little more obscure, but as you can see the competition is a bit unfair... *Edit (more I had forgotten) 3. Autograph- Sign in Please (another personal favorite of mine) 4. Lee Aaron- Metal Queen 5. Avenger- Blood Sports (nwobhm cult classic) 6. Krokus- The Blitz 7. Quiet Riot- Condition Critical

Chris Alo, I am not too old for this stuff and I just turned 60 on 9/27!!!! Saw Testament/Exodus and Death Angel last weekend in Portland, ME this past wknd.

@@chrisalo2989 i was thinking about that, and there is no way I could do a three day metal fest, even though it would be EPIC!!!! However, I still CAN do three days of reg. concerts in a row. : )

Glad to see Celtic Frost getting a lot of love in this episode (and Hellhammer, too.) They're all too often overlooked when people do their lists of favourite thrash metal albums. Such an influential band who were pioneers of extreme metal & downtuned riffs. They were leaders, not followers. "To Mega Therion" was a stone cold classic and it was relistening to "Morbid Tales" and "Emperor's Return" 20 years later which got me back into metal after a few year's hiatus.

@@MochaDaisy8645 it’s ok, but I’m more of a Mark 3 fan. Knockin’ On Your Back Door is awesome though. It’s probably a better album than Animalize, but I have a soft spot for Kiss. My second favourite band next to Rush, and my favourite band growing up. Animalize is mostly a miss, but the 3 or 4 good tracks make up for the misses.

'84 is crazy good, by far my favorite year... Here's my truckload of favorites:
1. Judas Priest- Defenders of the Faith (I've said before that this is my favorite Priest record- a shred fest from Tipton and Downing, dark atmosphere, intensity, classical inspired bits and great chord articulation. A handful of my favorite songs here as well.)
2. Metallica- Ride the Lightning (Also a top ten favorite album. To me this is the album that elevated thrash metal from a songwriting standpoint, already having been the sub-genre that stepped up on the technical side.)
3. Needless to say this is one of the most metal moments of all time, for anyone out there sneering at the glam thing.)
4. Ratt- Out of the Cellar (Warren DeMartini. That is all.)
5. Mindcrime is a masterpiece of its own, but when I'm in the mood for Queensryche I'm not satisfied until I give this whole record a turn.)
*Assuming people already know the fantastic Van Halen, Scorpions, Rush, Whitesnake, Dio, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister and Deep Purple records- might I suggest:
1. TNT- Knights of the New Thunder
2. Tokyo Blade- Night of the Blade
These I felt bad for leaving out because they're a little more obscure, but as you can see the competition is a bit unfair...
*Edit (more I had forgotten)
3. Autograph- Sign in Please (another personal favorite of mine)
4. Lee Aaron- Metal Queen
5. Avenger- Blood Sports (nwobhm cult classic)
6. Krokus- The Blitz
7. Quiet Riot- Condition Critical

Chris Alo, I am not too old for this stuff and I just turned 60 on 9/27!!!! Saw Testament/Exodus and Death Angel last weekend in Portland, ME this past wknd.
I hear ya, I saw that concert myself in NYC. But Mark how are you at doing three day heavy metal festivals at 62? I'm 51 years old and three day metal fests are getting tougher and tougher to do.
@@chrisalo2989 i was thinking about that, and there is no way I could do a three day metal fest, even though it would be EPIC!!!! However, I still CAN do three days of reg. concerts in a row. : )
Solid picks everyone! Thinking back I had these on my list that I didn’t hear mentioned: Fastway All Fired Up; Rods Let Them Eat Metal; Raven Live At the Inferno; Ramones Too Tough To Die.

Yeah, I agree on "Purple Rain". Loved the album & I'm not ashamed.
Helstar's Burning Star was a great pick by Bryce! I didn't even realize that album came out in 84; I thought it was later.

Way to go Bryce for mentioning W.A.S.P. Golgotha is an absolute banger. The lead in Golgotha still gives me goose bumps. People tend to hate the albums that are about Jesus. Never could understand all the hate for Christain metal.
