China has vowed to eradicate extreme poverty nationwide by the end of this year. The path to prosperity for all has been long and arduous and China is on the final stretch of the journey. But the last mile is always the hardest - so the government is forging new ways to reach its goal, including sending officials to live and work in the last pockets of poverty dotting the country. Who are they? What exactly do they do? And how do they go about the mammoth task of helping others climb out of poverty? Stay tuned to CGTN for the answers.#JobChallenge #poor #China #CGTN

This really touched me. I grew up in a stark poor mountain area in Sichuan. My parents sent me to the local county primary school, a boarding school. I was very naughty and refused to study, just like the eldest son. Then the Wenchuan earthquake devastated my hometown. PLA saved my family from debris. The government rebuilt our small town and all kids were admitted to schools without tuition. 12 years after the earthquake, I become a Ph.D. candidate studying seismology. I am the first university student from my village. Each time I look back my life, I know I benefit a lot from the high-speed development of China, and I can proudly say I love my country.

The poverty problem is complicated around the world. In China, poverty caused by remote barren land, harsh geographical environment, and the isolation of minorities with the outside world. So most of the minorities lived in that surroundings and most of the poverty happened among minorities in China.
China sends tremendous officials from rich areas to the remote poverty-stricken areas to help millions of people out of poverty each year. There has been no country in the world that can match this scale throughout history.
In 2004, I did 1 year in China on poverty alleviation work in Guizhou province as a volunteer.
Like you, we visited many villages and had to walk through mud up to my ankle deep to get to the villages.
Through that group, we built 20 plus primary schools, fixed houses and put orphans through school.
Then in 2012, I visited the province again. And I was so amazed at what China government has done.
They built roads to the villages to help them bring out their produce to sell. They built houses for the poor.
No nation I have known could do so much for the poor.
God bless China. And God bless them with good responsible caring leaders.
Really touch my heart! I am shame on Hong Kongers know so little about their mother country
Please let me know how we can get involved in the poverty alleviation work, thanks!
What a good story, how much did they pay you😃
Cealan, I did that one year poverty alleviation work for free. Then, I did volunteer work in Myanmar these recent years as they are much poorer.
When I save enough money, I volunteer myself to poor countries. When I finish all my savings, I come back to Malaysia to work and save money again.
Because I am single, I can do all these. I find my life much richer being able to help others.
Thank you. Have a lovely evening.

In britain they have something called 'zero hour contracts' which means you don't have any set hours or wages per a week and they can hire and fire you at will. We also have to pay thousands of pounds just to get educated and when we get degrees it does not guarantee anything, in fact, I have a degree and I work as a labourer in construction. Also when you work in private enterprise in the UK there is a lot of hatred for you as an ethnic minority as they see you as competition for their own meagre wages, and will try to sabotage your work or bully you. Actually funny story...they were building million pound luxury houses in one area and they had a special programme aimed at 'disadvantaged youth' (aka non-whites). I attended and the man in charge was giving us a lecture about the good things he was doing for the community, then he offered us the chance to work 'for free' as a construction labourer and was acting as if he was doing us a favour. Basically offering us an internship in blue-collar labour.

I am serious crying not just beacuse of the hard life of this people, not just because of the great war on poverty that China is developing, but because of the humanity and empathy of the leading worker Shen Rui. In a lot of Europe countries we have a lot of psychologists, studies, and talkings about how to listen and understand others, about the inability to conect and the need to feel understand...and do NOTHING! Our main policies are the in opposite groud of the findings on how to heel and take care of others to help them be what they can and deserv to be. To hear someone dealing with so extreme conditions and still teaching not to hit the kid, to let him calm down, to want to hear from him what happens, to understand de history of the father... .it is a lesson of humanity! Thank you

So touching... I love to see this type of program, hopeful and full of love. Heroes!
The social problems they must work to overcome strongly interest me because of my own background. Children whose parents don't see the value of school except as a place their kids can get food pass on this notion of education being unimportant. Poor attitudes toward education are difficult to overcome for adults, but the children are more pliable. They can learn the true value of education as I had to do as a boy. My father had been an orphan with a younger brother. Both had been taken away into their country's army as boys. He too didn't truly understand how to be a father, although I knew he loved me very much.
The total value of China is exports increased by 19,4 per cent in in the first six months as compared with the corresponding period with foodstuffs and goods occupying an important place in the exports of the country.
that is one of goals, help those people to change their mindset. in those remote areas, many people are poor because of their mindset. education is a way to get out of poverty. that could take several generations.
That's why the Chinese government "force" all kids to go to school. No one should be left.
Regrettably, BBC/CNN never report this.
If they make a documentary on exactly this topic, interview the exact people, document the exact events, etc... count on me they'll put horror movie music throughout, emphasize the parts where the commissioners raise their voices (with bad translations making their language sound more forceful and "authoritarian-like"), and then focus on the bewildered looks on the locals to show they don't connect. Also, the conclusion to their documentary would most likely end with a shot of children with mud all over, with the narration saying "while the commissioners promised a better future, a decent life remains a distant dream for the people of Daliangshan."

I love my motherland, China! China's economic success stems from the relentless efforts of the government and its poverty alleviation heroes. We are not afraid of poverty, but afraid of knowing poverty and not trying to solve it!! I hope everyone in the world can live a happy life and will no longer be distressed for not being able to afford to read book or eat.
I believe Nadim had his eyes opened to not only the level of poverty he encountered , but the serios efforts of his colleagues who HAD to take things seriously and not treat their jobs light heartedly. A muddy shack in rural China may have caused him some consternation, it was clear on his face, but he need only look for the homeless settlements in any city in Europe or America, to see the same destitution.
To eradicate poverty anywhere in the world, one has to set one's mind, heart and soul to the task, and to pursue one's goal relentlessly.
Bravo China for making the effort.
What you said is correct But is there any government that really care? Especially in a democracy country as I live in one, During elections time they come out and promise you the sky. The government only do things to fish for vote. After elections, you die, your business. Most country you can only choose A or B and both are bad. They have the cronies who will supply them funds during elections. and the worst things is that they are safe seat so it always loopsided in those states. The other matter is the choice of their employees. As shown in this video, The commitment and responsibilities they put in are really from the heart and for the betterment of the peoples and not treat it as just a jobs. They always try to excel in the jobs, They are true heroes.

I used to be almost as poor as this in China. Back then I remember when I was 9 I had to walk 2 hours to school, which didn't feel hard at the time, because most of my other classmates are doing the same thing, so for a long time, I had assumed that the 2 hour walks to school was the norm around the world. Later my village was set to be developed, and my parents got better jobs in China, and I was able to come to Canada for school. When I first came to Canada I was shocked that I only had to walk 5 minutes to school and that almost every major neighborhood had a school, so no one has to walk to school for further than 15minute. The infrastructure also amazed me as we didn't have anything close to that in China. Fast forward 17 years, now everything is in reverse, when I go back to China I am shocked at how fastly superior the infrastructures are there. Everything about China surpassed Canada, except for the air quality of course. China has the best delivery system you will ever find, taking 1 day anywhere around the country. Easiest payment method, which you can actually leave the house with just your cellphone, which is something I still struggle to do in Canada. Now kids in China also does 5-15 minute commute to classes, just like here in the west. I mean as someone who lived in a communist and a democratic society, I can safely say that there is a reason why the CCP is so loved by the Chinese. Just look at India for comparison, similar population, similar starting position in the world, yet China has more than 4 times its GDP. Those who understand anything about politics will know that, you just can not have that level of growth in a democratic society. And the reason for that is because all the parties who try to run for office in a democratic society have their own agenda for how the country should be run, that's why whenever a new party is elected government in the west, fundings for project set by the previous government will most likely be halted because the new government often wants the spend the money elsewhere. This drastically slows down growth.
Agree with everything you said other than China surpassing Canada. There are still more % of people living in poverty in China than in Canada. In terms of city life, China definitely is doing better than Canada but in terms of general standards of living, Canada is still ahead in my opinion. But it is interesting to hear from someone who came from villages like this.

I have so much respect for them. Helping to lift people up from poverty by teaching, sharing and guiding the poor. Hope that the villagers life could be improved and their children have better future ahead.
I met a lady from Beijing, she works as a nurse for a governmental flexible medical service for poor villages, they are processing a free heart diseases recovery program, that means all money will be afforded by governments. I asked the reason why she went to there several times, she said the first time, she went to poor village, she saw many children in poverty want to study at school, but their families refused because of lack of money and diseases. She had no way to change the situation, however, once she witnessed a doctor cured an old, the old’s family kneeling. She realized if she can help those in medical need, she can ask them to send their children into school, to receive education. When she doesn’t have enough money, she will go to work in BJ, and then she will return to village. I still don’t have her name, but she is real hidden great in my life.
As an overseas Chinese, would like to thanks the Chinese government, the CCP & all the people involved in the poverty elimination programs. Keep up the good works 👍
Powerful. Lots of respect to everyone involved in making this.
Thx for sharing this. I’m so proud of this folks hard work. Keep it up.

A moving insight into extreme poverty in China.
RIP to those commissioners who have passed away during this arduous project.
Deep respect to everyone in the Team for the hugely difficult jobs they have... 🙇♀️🙇♀️
There should be a follow-up especially on the teenage boy.
Yes. Would love to see his progress. His father's mother died when he was eight, no shoes... Would it better that he does not have so many children? Life is easier for everyone

I enjoyed this documentary, it was very interesting and positive.
It is really hard work but worth doing.
This is China, another aspect of China. I am very touched after viewed this video. So glad China can present this side to the world and not just showing how modern of the first tier city. If want to eradicate poverty from the root. It needs to start from education. After one to two generation, makes life getting better. China will be a truly powerful country.
25 years ago when I was a kid, we lived in a poor village where my mom, a 1,55m woman, had to carry water everyday for cooking, washing, cleaning. Every single day. Four of us lived in a room with 10 m2.
In 2013, finally we afforded to buy an appartment.
Now, our family are having a happy life with sufficient money for house, cars, just like it used to show on TV in Europe or US.
I cannot imagin how we have went thru those hard days. My family is just one out of thousands of millions of familes, who have benefit from the Chinas development. Thanks for the good job!
Very well presented, interesting documentary. Good to see a foreigner narrating the story.
That's very touching. You are all heroes!
I wish thay had a program like this all over the world..every one deserves better..
I didn’t know such extreme poverty still exist in China. I myself is Chinese. Thank those people who had been taken responsibility of the entire society for us.
Very touching documentary about rural poverty. Also glad to know there are honest young people willing to help. Cant help it when you see city folks rioting, burning public property and vandalising public facilities .

I remember the last holiday I've been meeting my junior high friend in the working field, electricity stuff, a very tough working situation.
have to salute to the workers that work in heavy industries that lift the whole country up.
No matter what policy or practices a society decides to follow, removing poverty among the poor is an important factor. Even in democracy, the very poor just cannot participate because of poverty; because when you are Hungary, what is the use of freedom? You can still die of hunger or you would be slowly but steadily rendered incapable to contribute to the society. The minimum requirements to survive especially for the children must be the basis of a caring society.
This is the power of socialism, were extreme capitalism failed.
Your whole coutry needed captalism to get where it is lol.
And now you say socalism is great hahahahaaha.

@@iwanemastuirapedchina7655 Don't know why you confine yourself in the time capsule while the world moves on. China has learned the lessons and plunged headlong into rebuilding the country with their ideology. Only the fools repeat the mistakes and the ignorant refuse to see the facts. @@iwanemastuirapedchina7655 Yeah that's called a famine. The US supposedly had 7 million deaths due to famine during their great depression. Now I can spin that claim to say Capitalism kills millions. And trust me, I live in a Democratic capitalist country too and poverty is abound. I may not like China's camps to stop terrorism or one child policy to manage an exploding population, but at least I get it. They experiment and adapt. You schmucks can't even put on a mask without acting like a bunch babies.
Thank you for that. Jeez we don't know how lucky we are. One has to applaud their Govt for the poverty initiative. .
The poverty alleviation commissioners are young, passionate, and extremely serious about their work. They take it so seriously that they treat the poor people as their own family members. China is a great nation because majority of us are kind hearted and CCP is a great party that has insight and treats the welfare of every citizen as one of its prioritized goals.
I love my country, and the party that is leading the country, CCP. President Xi is doing a great job.
One of the best documentary I have ever seen. The poorest village in China. The poverty is beyond of my imagination. I thought my childhood was poor, but it could be paradise for them. Great thanks to the commissioners.

Speechless come on man 200 yuan but Western media will not be interested in such stories of China getting people out of poverty. Pakistan and other countries need to learn a lot from this. Even more respect for the honourable president and the Communist party of China from Lahore Pakistan. I know some may not like this comment but I am only interested in a political system that delivers bottom line results.
Long live Pakistan.... Love Imran Khan.... Great cricketer and good Preaident👍👍👍
30 years later, is it possible the president of China is someone like Shen rui, the commisioner here. They are grassroot ppl that work their way up, step by step, a life long career with experience. Meritocracy when selected based on the success cases under their care..
Xi was in Shen rui's position thirty years ago.
Hope their spirit to serve remain as always.
Please continue to help. Those children are our future.
Please do another series of the cellular transmission/power line tower builders. They are the real anonymous heros who bring hope and energy to remote and rural areas over the country, especially for the poor kids risking their lives walking miles to school before dawn.
