I grew up in a small village in China in 1970s , Which was desperately poor . I was the lucky few to enter university in China and then studied in UK , and established my own business quite successfully in Shenzhen . I used to lend help and money to local villagers for various causes such as illness , tuition , housebuilding etc . since 2000. But I was rarely approached by any of them for financial help in the last 5 to 10 years . The villagers are much better off . In the village , Pavement roads were built by the government, and new houses sprung up . It is much greener and more beautiful. Also nobody discriminate against the poorer ones who receives government subsidies in the village . This is just an epitome of China’s endless effort to eliminate poverty .

China is doing a great work ending poverty for millions of people. You may not agree with more of their policies but this is something that we westerners have to learn from them.
BBC wrote an article today criticising China's war on poverty policy. It claims China "forces" people into work even if it pays well because some people from minority groups such as Uighurs may not freely choose to do the work that was given to them such as picking cottons even if it elevate them from poverty. What a load of rubbish the BBC is spouting. The UK allow 100,000 eastern Europeans into it country to pick fruits and vegetables in British farms so do the BBC think it is forced labour? How is it these type of work these people freely choose to do or is it just to make a some money to send home? Maybe in the UK the culture of claiming benefit and refusal to work is fundamental human right but then I do recall able body people face benefit cut if they are not activiely seeking employment. Many people in the UK will be thankful if they can get work and put food on the table right now even if the job they were given is not ther dream job. In the other CGTN documentary, it states there are 3M commissioners working on poverty alleviation, and due to hardship (as you indicated) more than 79 thousand died. Good for you to have survived it.
The honesty and earnestness of the people working on these problems and the stark realities of poverty demonstrated in this documentary surprised me. I kind of expected a quick run-through of the remedies toward poverty alleviation explained in the movie but instead found a detailed showing of the struggle, determination, and conflict resolution involved in this serious project. I hope many can see this without preconceived notions and see how hard work and honesty can be put together to help one another. The scene with the villagers discussing their poverty evaluations and the scene of party members participating in self criticism (especially the bit explaining the repercussions of not fulfilling the goals) broke any airs of this being a document of china patting itself on the back. It's not a perfect process but an admirable mission. That honesty in showing the process really made this a moving experience for me and I wish the best for the people involved and for the rest of the world as this war on poverty concludes and begins another chapter in demonstrating how to improve the lives of the people.

Some people say that China's success is because it implemented some capitalist ideas. I think we are getting it wrong. In a capitalist society, the main idea is to make more capital. While in a socialist society, the main idea is to help society. They might have similar ways to accomplish their ends, but their ends are completely different. The first wants money just because of the love for money, while the other wants money to create a better society. Western countries must stop being afraid of the word socialism.

I live in a large, rich North American city - one of the richest in the world, in fact. The skyline is full of luxury highrises being built, and the suburbs are full of the houses of the millionaires and billionaires. But under every bridge and next to every freeway exchange are hundreds of homeless people who have nothing. Some living in tents, many sleeping in the freezing air under just blankets and sleeping bags. The lucky ones sleep in their cars. Some have substance abuse issues, but many simply lost their jobs, couldn't pay their rent and their debts, and had no family to turn to for help. I meet many foreigners who are shocked by the level of poverty that's allowed to exist here. The government's solution to this is to use the police to chase them around the city, kicking them out and forcing them to move somewhere else. Then, rinse and repeat. Solving poverty is not a priority for the West. In fact, the presence of poverty serves two important purposes in preserving elite rule. One: it ensures a large labor force for menial and low wage work - the gig workers, Uber and delivery drivers, and other minimum wage workers who power the profits of their employers. Two: it sends a powerful subliminal message: "work hard for your boss, or this could be you".
So true. The capitalistic US gov only caters to the avaricious needs of the millionaire/billionaire class. Whereas, the socialist gov of China genuinely cares for its poor and ordinary working people by aiming for common prosperity for all - eliminating abject poverty. What a stark contrast between an atheist socialist gov and a democracy led by many so-called Christian politicians. China has more caring and compassion for the poor, while the US gov ignores the needs of the poor - just always busy with instigating profit-making wars that never end.
The difference between China and the US led west. In China, the govt heart is with the people. The US, the heart is for the elites and the rich. My highest respect to the Chinese people and their continuing effort to improve their lives.

It takes more than government policies, national plan, organisational structure to make it happen. You need to have supports from the people in general. It cannot happen in USA, a "me first" country. In that country, when a guy says "human right", it usually means HIS "right", not YOUR "right"...
In this great war, more than 1800 officials died of overwork and accidents. They have sacrificed their lives for the people, the people will never forget them, and the country will always remember them.
Reminder that in Gaddafi’s Libya having a home was considered a human right, but furthermore he stated that home ownership itself was a necessary element to human freedom, and promised that his parents, who were living in a tent, would not be properly housed until he had done so for all other Libyans. He pronounced every man’s right to food, clothing and transport as sacred and recognized society at large as having no authority to interfere with the individual’s personal choices. China has set the gold standard for eradication of absolute poverty in developing nations of which China is one, and this remarkable achievement has gained the recognition of the United Nations and other organizations. Meanwhile democracy icon USA has 39 million of its 331 million population living in poverty while the world's largest democracy India has at least 20 per cent or 260 million of its 1.3 billion people living in poverty (likely more now as a result of the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic). This is an unprecedented achievement in Chinese history and offers valuable lessons for other developing nations.
I admire China for boldly applying the wealth gained during the past 70 years from the "economic miracle" it had achieved by escaping subjugation under capitalist imperialism. China consistently invests its resources into lifting its own people to a bright future, an act of humanitarianism that should be obvious to every country, but very few leaders other than China share such wisdom.

Human rights comes in many shapes and forms, and the notion of universal human rights are all but an idealistic notion, given the cultural differences and nuances of different countries and ethnicities. To detractors who kept harping on China's lack in freedom of speech, free press etc as the proverbial hitting stick, what human rights do you have if one is living in abject poverty? So if China today is run in a Western style democracy and capitalist model like USA, giving everyone tom and harry the right to vote, the right to cuss at the President, and having choices of medias (which is actually controlled by an elite group of 5/6 conglomerate lol), they would be a model country, in spite of having Chinese citizens being homeless, starving, and without the right skills and opportunities to progress in life? In the past 40 years, more and more people have sunk into poverty, especially in democratic run nations ravaged by extreme capitalism/plutocracy, which is increasingly a failed model in the West since the governance around it have been taken off. Compared to China which have progressively lifted large swathes of population out of abject poverty and an increasingly big layer of middle class now, who are living with more dignity and human rights? Ironically China is adopting the Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which was designed and advocated by a Western psychologist, yet it is being criticized constantly for lacking in human rights. Laughable.
Let’s remember Xi Jinping started as one of these bottom of the ladder village servants. Which explains his desire to lift these poor people for a better future to their children

It would appear that "abolition" of poverty is preferred more for publicity and propaganda rather than actually eradicating it with vigor as done in China. The basic requirements of food and shelter are addressed with a vigor and this should be the basic structure of ALL Societies not only in the so-called socialist nations. In Singapore, old Lee built his nation based on the basis that each family must have a shelter called his home; just compare the situation with Hong Kong which technically has a mush higher reserves! The world should relooks itself and bases its future with a more humanitarian approach.
Wise leadership and competent responsible collective governance will bless the nation and people with prosperity progress happiness security safety. China is a catalyst for global cooperation friendship shared prosperity for a better world. Those not appreciating and blocking the path to progress will fall into decline. Well done China ❤️🇨🇳
The foundation of a nation is its people. Of paramount importance to the people is their livelihood. However, livelihood can only be built and sustained on social stability, and environmentally sustainable development. On the other hand, social stability is equally dependent on the values subscribed to by the people at large. In a nut shell, this doctrine has long been ingrained in the Chinese sociopolitical philosophy: 国以民为本,民以食为天,食以安为天,安以质为本,质以诚为根. The guiding principle of CPC is to win the hearts and minds of its people (人心向背). This people-centric doctrine is traceable to an old Chinese adage of: “得人心者得天下; 失人心者失天下”. This may literally be translated to: “he who wins the hearts and minds of the people, reigns; and conversely, he who lost the hearts and minds of the people, perishes”. To win the hearts and minds of the people is obviously not an easy task. Not when China has a population of over 1.4 billion. That said, empirically there is no other government in the world that has done a better job than the Chinese government.
As a student staying in US for over 6 years, I’ve never felt so attached and moved by the progress my country has managed to make. I’ve never been as proud as in this moment watching the documentary. National pride doesn’t come from invading other countries nor does it come from talking down to the rest of the world, it rises from the heart of every proud Chinese citizen when the country is really doing good for itself.

I used to lend help and money to local villagers for various causes such as illness , tuition , housebuilding etc . since 2000. But I was rarely approached by any of them for financial help in the last 5 to 10 years . The villagers are much better off .
To put simply, one is motivated by greed and enrich a tiny few (capitalism); and the other is motivated by compassion and common prosperity for all (socialism).

I grew up from a poor village in China, most of young people went to big cities for making a living. Their kids left at home and raised by elderly people of family. The young people are working day and night in cities and sending money back for building a new house and feeding their families. They have no choice but to make a living far from home and separate with their families years and years. I left my home for education when I was ten, endured the loneliness until my graduation. I have to say that most of Chinese lifeted out the poverty are by themselves, by hard working and hard working. Whilst China is lifting millions of it's people out of poverty! Millions of Americans are just now finding out how it feels to be forced into poverty, by their own Far Right Fascist Republikkkan Party and their leader the wannabe Dicktater X-President tRump!
Seattle?
YES for real! This sums it up perfectly.
I strongly recommend a Chinese TV drama called Shan Shui Qing (mining town). It is about poverty alleviation based on true story in 1990s. It is the best TV drama I have seen for many years. The actors are wonderful. They use local dialect and work in the fields just like local farmers. China has set the gold standard for eradication of absolute poverty in developing nations of which China is one, and this remarkable achievement has gained the recognition of the United Nations and other organizations. This is one of the reasons I fell in love with China

It would appear that "abolition" of poverty is preferred more for publicity and propaganda rather than actually eradicating it with vigor as done in China. The basic requirements of food and shelter are addressed with a vigor and this should be the basic structure of ALL Societies not only in the so-called socialist nations. The world should relooks itself and bases its future with a more humanitarian approach.
