Walking Through Tivoli Gardens for the First Time! 🇯🇲

- Tivoli Gardens, or Tivoli Gully, is a garrison in West Kingston, Jamaica. It was revamped in the 1960s, but since then, it's been plagued by poverty, high unemployment, and crime. By the late 20th century, it gained a reputation for drug trafficking and social unrest, and locals often warn it's the most dangerous area to visit. Curious about its notorious reputation, I decided to check it out for myself.

Well said.

It never ceases to amaze me how Jamaica is so fascinating to foreigners and us Jamaicans seem to be quick to undermine how special our homeland is. Good bad and indifferent is what makes her what she is. Love Jamaica! Time for us to step up to the plate and love our fellow citizens. After all X marks the special spot on earth. One Love!🇯🇲
It’s not just your land that’s fascinating you know. And it’s a 50-50 deal and nobody that comes. There is going to take one without the other we gotta have both.
Yes Facts
Are there virgins in Jamaica? I mean with all the twerking I see in riddim music is a man guaranteed a pure woman.
@DonnellOkafor0304 it’s something that if you are a poor person that you will never understand.
The dominant consciousness over the domain of earth, is that of the Caucasian consciousness. By his standards that are set, it is through this way you live in poverty, if that is what you are. his world is not perfect as you could see, and a great deal of the caucasians Don’t want poor people to exist on the planet. And it’s not that they want to eliminate the poor people by killing them off brutally but they would like to just end poverty itself . But before they can do that, they have to know what it is because most of them don’t know what property is..
One of them can go to rock-bottom bank account emptied but that doesn’t mean that he is poor or in poverty as he can find ways to gain his wealth back and as long as he is capable of doing this, he has never ever poor.
But what he is trying to figure out is that if he can go to the bottom and come back up and you are there at the bottom? Why can you not come up? What is holding you down? He’s not from the bottom so enable for somebody to defeat an enemy they first must have to know what that enemy is I know everything about him and when I say enemy, I don’t mean you I mean, poverty itself is the enemy. Please try and understand..

Chris i am glad to hear and see what happens in the inner city. I admire your bravery. There are good people even in those areas and I am happy that you are high lightening them.
Most local and international entertainers for publicity value enter Tivoli Gardens safely thru the front entrance … Comes now Chris Aka “Cris Muss List” who just step thru May Pen Cemetery and come in ,yow the man a “Real Badman” 😂
😂😂😂😂 Chris is probably Fed up with life he don't give two fucks 😂😂😂
Chris, you need a standing ovation. Not only are you super brave to go to Tivoli by yourself, but really noble in your quest to find positivity there. The residents appear to be super welcoming and willing to move past the negative stigma plaguing this community. It was good to see the warmth people gave you from this video, even tho it was interrupted when you were told to put down the camera
In the past things were so much worse in Tivoli, the early 2010s in particular. Since then, there have been many infrastructural improvements and repairs, with barely any signs of a civil war. Coupled with the fact that you were able to enter and exit safely, this could be a sign of things changing for the better. I may not know why that one man told you to cut the footage, but the inner cities of Downtown Kingston really need more positive outlooks like this.
The only war happens at Tivoli gardens is when the Babylon go mess with the people

Chris you have a heart of gold my brother. Stay safe. You relate to people with such respect. Blessings
The people in the Ghettos are really nice people but when you DISTURB them you'll have problems on you hands, notice that you don't see a lot of you men or people on the streets that's a good indicator that something might be going on like war between two communities so when going in these communities always find out if there are any war going on
After visiting 123 countries and many hoods around the world I am well aware of my surroundings. The reason you don't see men on the road is because I was asked not to film or delete any of that footage by the big boss of the neighbourhood. I respectfully agreed. I know silence is not always a good sign, it is often a sign of problems to come.
I have found memory of tivoli as a place I once visited to be with school friends

I believe unfortunate circumstances allow people to behave a certain way. Tivoli Gardens residents have to find ways to survive and get recognized in their own way. Survival of the fittest. Government needs to meet people where they are. Many needs a deserving chance for change but help is a must. I appreciate this mini documentary. Keep up the good work

When I lived in Trench Town as a child in the sixties, people were so terrified of the place that one night we went out on the sidewalk and threw sand and gravel into passing cars, and not body stopped! But we it was just an ordinary peaceful community. Many years later, living in Montego Bay, I saw a friend with a travel bag, and asked her where she was going. She said Tivoli and it was my turn to react to the hype! But she assured me that " dem naaw trouble yuh, only if dem have "war". 10:56
Sad to say as man of colour I couldn’t even go Tivoli Garden or any normal Jamaican .. but big up yourself Chris 💙

I am a Jamaican who has never been to Trench Town, Craig Town and Tivoli...but Christmust put me on his list and took me there...when you bravely got out the car of the jolly taxi driver I told myself, Chris nuh friad at all! Respect due! Where do we go next?
For the sake of clarity, Chris, please allow me...
(i) The murals begin at 7:50 with Mighty Might (I don't know him-- my guess is that he may have been a popular sound system operator); the Skatalites was a legendary foundation Ska band and Lloyd Brevett was their bass player; the “Reggae Legends” photos are the original Wailers showing Neville Livingston (aka Bunny Wailer), Bob Marley and Winston McIntosh (aka Peter Tosh); Edward Seaga of the JLP is who built Tivoli Gardens; Clement Dodd (aka Sir Coxone), major music producer and Studio One owner from foundation times up well into the 2000's; Prince Buster (née Cecil Campbell), major foundation singer and producer up to the late 1970's.
(ii) 9:00-- May Pen cemetery (not connected to the town of May Pen in Clarendon parish) has to be the oldest cemetery in Jamaica, existing from the 19th century; Don Drummond, famous trombonist of the said Skatalites, is buried there too.
(iii) 13:51, the national heroes-- Nanny of the Maroons (rightly 'Nana', an original Akan/Asante term meaning 'Chief'), led her people against the British until her death in 1733, operated in the east and was the first maroon organiser that we know of; Sam Sharpe was hanged in 1832 for organising slaves on several St James plantations to rebel and kill the slavers; Paul Bogle led the Morant Bay Rebellion of 1865; George William Gordon was a mulatto and sitting member of the house of representatives, a black rights sympathiser who supported Paul Bogle (both Bogle and Gordon were hanged); Marcus Garvey's story is known internationally, so I'll just point out that he is revered as a prophet by the Rastafarians because of his accurate prediction of the coming and enthroning of Haile Selassie in 1930; Alexander Bustamante (née Alexander Clark) founded the JLP and was the inaugural PM after Independence; Norman Washington Manley was the founder of the PNP, the first indigenous political party, and was Chief Minister before Independence. NB:- In the discussion with your host, both of you are mistaken: Michael Manley, son of Norman, was the PM of which you spoke. And you should be aware that you were in an overwhelmingly JLP area and so opinions/discussions will be heavily skewed.
(iv) 19:47-- 'Hot' beer is something that many Jamaicans like, where 'hot' here means ambient temp. (In my time it wasn't uncommon to hear a guy order “Bartender, gimme two hot hops!”)
--Æ.
The person who tells you to stop filming has something to hide. I am familiar with Tivoli Gardens but I certainly would not visit there on my own in this day and age. It is also very factual that as a white man you will be able to make it in and out of those communities without being harmed or robbed when compared to a local from a different community, more so one from an opposing political spectrum.
Exactly white privilege is everywhere unfortunately… nevertheless he was still brave to go

No he won't have any problems at all. People get very confused, not everything that I experience is on film. For example when I was asked to put the camera down I didn't leave the community. I was brought to speak to the boss of TG. After a long conversation and an hour I was told that I could keep on filming, but I felt like my time there should end. I wasn't asked to leave.
I don't think the president would have been pleased to hear that a foreigner went to his community to show its beauty and got hurt

@@charlenestewartson5940stop lying. How many other communities had 2 weeks of shoot out with the state? And have helicopter hun ships firing at hun men? Liar
A lot of people commenting on here really don’t understand Jamaica, and places like it. For one thing, much of the violence plaguing this neighborhood and others in Kingston is politically based, not necessarily everybody being a dope fiend, robbing each other, and fighting for drug territory like in US ghettoes. But on top of that, foreigners and their tourism are the lifeblood of Jamaica, and as such tourists don’t face the same danger when going into a neighborhood like Tivoli as a regular Jamaican citizen would. Tourists are “relatively” safe and protected. Especially considering that many neighborhoods dons will not tolerate crimes such as robbery and rape.
This guy was never in any real danger, except for the possibility of being randomly caught in some neighborhood shoot out, but the dons are generally in strict control of that and people know when it is safe to enter a garrison and when it is not.
This is great! Chris know the road code he asked the man if it's ok to keep filming. He is showing the other side of ghetto, where real people live with real business trying to make it.

it would be nice to know more details about what happened. That is very intriguing to me. Was it a local gang that controls the territory or what?
A Google search will tell you all that and more. The Don of the neighbourhood was basically the worlds most wanted man. The USA came in and took him.
The community is/was ran ran by an international organization that trade in arms and narcotics. They are wealthy and very powerful globally. The community operates as a state within a state. To arrest the former area leader it took the entire Jamaican army, the Jamaican police force, the FBI & CIA. In the process about 73 people were killed.
