@@stevehauk seat positioning can be a little more complicated depending on type of saddle you have. Here's a video I made of how to ruclips.net/video/0AyqeQ1NGNw/видео.html
Thanks for helping an "old guy" do something which now alleviates neck and shoulder pain. I really like that you didn't use a bunch of loud music like some folks do to "enhance" their videos. You got right to the point and made the job very easy. I am going to take my bike to the shop now and have them check over the tightness of the screws/bolts.
Glad the video was able to help you out. Yes everything should be tightened down good and tight except the 1 allen bolt on top cap. That should just be snug down enough that there's no play in the fork bearing between top of fork and frame 👍🏻
Do you have any clever ways of tightening nuts and bolts. I have a muscle problem and really struggle, especially when holding the bike up at the same time.
@@bertaga41 Extend your fulcrum by using a ring spanner , place the ring end of the spanner over the allan key so it extends the length of it, ie in a sraight line - not working, flip the spanner over and try again, if you can't work this out get an adjustable spanner and use the hole in the handle then it will make sense, be careful this will add a lot of energy, it is easy to break tools or parts with this method. This method also works for all ring spanners to extend their fulcrum ie ring end of spanner on bolt then slip another spanners ring end over the open end of the original spanner essentially doubling the length of the original spanner. I have been using this method for 30 years and never had an issue, also have muscular skeletal problems and rebuid cars just for fun, to hold the bike upright tie it to a post or chair - anything that will support it, or buy yourself a proper bike repair stand, use material or foam between the object you use and the bike to avoid damaging the paint (or anything else) even rope and tent pegs will support a bike firmly if correctly placed, hope some of this helps
I always leave a tiny space between the top of the riser and the headset, that way I can use the top cap screw to get the tension right on the bearings. so there's no play but its not too tight either. Then tighten up the screws on the headset and riser to keep the bar perpendicular to the wheel. Rock solid.
This is absolutely true when tightening the top cap and compressing the bearings, stem and spacers on the steering tube. But the extender/riser can be flush or even a little above the stem since the riser is free to move in relation to the steering tube.
Watched a few videos on how to do this, but this was the easiest and the first one where I actually felt confident enough to have a go myself. I thought my front brake cable would be a problem, as it was pretty tight, and it made getting the handlebars back on a tight squeeze, but it's actually all good once the handlebars were in place. Makes such a difference to my bike for 5-10 minutes work.
Thanks so much! We are nomads and searched for months over 5 states for 2 new bikes (we had given ours away). Finally found a could to ride us over till this virus-caused inventory shortage is over? But we are killing our backs as well. We can have taller handlebars by Saturday! Woot!!!
Awesome, yes these things definitely help alleviate some back pain. This bike shortage craze is wild! Im glad I bought a couple bikes to cruise around on a month before the pandemic 👍🏻
Good video. Tip: One thing to watch out for is that the inside of the riser doesn't bottom out on the steering tube before you get enough tension on the bearings. If it does, add a small spacer below the riser.
yes! Thank you, it does take some fiddling with the spacers to find the right combination to get at proper height to still allow for tension on that steer bearing
Jonny diy:I cant find your reply on the RUclips channel but I got a copy on gmail about loosening tight nuts. So thanks for your time. Very much appreciated.
Thank you so much for making this video. I just bought a new bike I wend from a 21 speed cruiser to a mountain bike I have only been riding it a few days and my back and shoulders are killing me from having to lean so far over to ride it (that's hell on a 50 year old man lol) I had all but given up all hope on a comfortable ride. You definitely get a thumbs up and subscribe from me
Awesome, youre very welcome. Tighten the top bearing cap 1st & when tightening it, just tighten it enough so there is no play (dont over tighten). Then tighten side clamps good and tight.
Jonny DIY well I went and bought a riser but I have to get longer brake cables lol. So for now I have a pair of bullhorns installed that's still a lot better than it was and will work until I can get the cables put on. I adjusted my disk breaks so they weren't rubbing yesterday and that made a world of difference all in itself
OK one more update. I added the longer brake cables and was able to install the riser so now she is all good plus I added a gel seat cover so my tush has some cush lol so now my ride is customized for comfort galore ☺😀
I would preload the headset bearings using the top cap bolt and check for play before screwing the stem bolts. I destroyed my MTB's headset bearings because i tightened the stem bolts before the top cap. So much play on the bottom bearings the race pitted, and start making random click noises after 50 miles.
I have the same issue. I bought a trek marlin 7 2019 29” xl frame and to get the proper leg extension I have to have my seat super high. I think I’m going to purchase a riser and see how that goes. It’s worth it and my neck and back will thank me for sure.
Is it me or are all mountain bikes' default design uncomfortable for EVERYONE! The handle bars should be up higher by default and people that want to be hunched over should have to buy something to fix it.
Yeah you're right they're all like this. It's just we should all probably be buying a hybrid style frame bike for more versatile comfort riding. Mountain bikes really only designed for actual mountain trails. I ended up finding an Electra beach cruiser for all my easy pavement riding
Yeah but it probably happens with us taller guys. I had a BMX bike when I was a kid and the handlebars were so high up it was like a motorcycle chopper and so that's what I'm used to. But with my commuter e-bike the handlebars are slightly higher than the seat and after 4 or 5 hours you really feel it in your back.
@@Tinman710 Yeah. I'm pretty tall too. 6'3" I just can't imagine anyone would want the handle bars down where the seat is. But, you're right, there are downsides to above average size.

Well u kind of have to play with the spacers because every steer headset is a little different size. Just use enough spacers so headset is barely above the riser tube so you can still tension top bearing cap👍 ohh and tension bearing cap before tightening side bolts
Not usually unless maybe bike was too big for you. You usually want your posture more upright to make bike more comfortable. If you look at beach cruiser type bikes you can see how different posture is compared to mountain bike. Hybrid style is usually best of both worlds
Johnny, hey Richard here. It's late wondering if you could assist me tomorrow with my new bike. The riser and stem ugh been frustrating. Already broke my cheap steam.

Sounds like it is loose. Take it bad to the bike shop and have them tighten it if you dont have the tools to do yourself. Stem Riser probably just loosened up a lil bit or the bar headset clamps. The ones loose are the side facing allen bolts not the top one
You need the bike stem to be at least 1/4” above the steer tube. This will allow you to compress the bearing in the head tube. Otherwise it will be loose and very dangerous. If it’s flush there is no way to compress the headset. Hope this makes sense.
