As reddit user muddledgarlic pointed out, this version (which is in C minor) might actually be the right one. Here's what he had to say:
'To test this I worked on the assumption that the lead synth sound is the DX7 ROM 2B "SYN-LEAD 5" preset high-passed. Certainly to my ears the preset is identical in both timbre and articulation. While the pitch of the note itself can't be used to determine the original recording speed, the vibrato that comes in on the longer held notes is contant in rate across the keyboard.
By measuring the time taken for 20 cycles of the vibrato using a spectral image of TMS, and comparing that with the actual DX7 preset, I was able to determine that the rate of the vibrato matches when the speed of the recording is increased to place it in the key of C minor.
For what it's worth - while uncommon - C minor is not an unknown key for rock songs. Eye of the Tiger (1982) is one obvious example, along with the song from Messerschmitt found by _Waves_ which comes from the same sort of scene as TMS.
As for why this song is slow whereas the other tracks on the tape appear not to be... It's worth remembering that the other tracks would have been played back from officially-sourced recordings, while TMS would probably have been from a cassette supplied by the band. That cassette could have had any number of duplication problems that resulted in slow playback on the air.
There is the possibility that TMS was deliberately slowed during mixing to get a certain sound, by no means an alien technique in the '70s and '80s. Quite a few of ABBA's earlier tracks were mastered in slightly shifted keys from the original master tape to alter the feel of the song, Honey Honey being one of them - originally recorded about a semitone lower than the released track.
Nevertheless, I'm pretty confident that the track (or at the very least, the lead synth part) was recorded in the key of C minor.'
But there are also contrary opinions that suggest B minor instead, which would make the 'regular version' closer to the correct one (just 20 cents too high).
Check the reddit thread for the whole discussion and feel free to share your opinion:

Great analysis! Hey can you see if you can compare any Dx sound or techniques to that of those performed by the female Keyboardist of the group Forward Music Quintet. They are a Greek Dark Wave band who were friends with Alvin Dean , the strongest candidate for singer of this song. Several songs on their album have the same sound as like the wind and even the drumming sound the same. The drummer of Forward Music Quintet was also a friend and former band mate of Alvin Dean as well. Also, the baseline in this song has an early 1980's reggae guitar feel, and the bassist of Forward Music Quintet was a former bandmate of Alvin Dean's Bandmate in the group Statues in Motion. Lastly, Alvin Dean's Bandmate from statues in Motion claims that they did Like the Wind originally and had to exclude it from their premiere album. Clearly, Forward Music Quintet with Alvin Dean could have redone the song a few years later, possibly in 1984.

Thank you :) Now looking back at it after some time, I'm not sure if this was the right pitch either. But I highly doubt that the OG version is the right one. Either someone recorded it to make up that whole hoax and intentionally slowed it down/slowed down parts of it to make it more mysterious or unrecognizable or there is something wrong with that tape. Since there only seems to be one (or two?) copies of this song around, and no leads have turned up after years, I think the hoax theory is getting stronger by the day.

    • @gorry123
      @gorry123 Год назад +19

@@luc1264 It could be just a misadjusted motor in the tape recorder recording at too high speed. Or the tape deck on which the original tape was copied to the tape sent to the radio could be playing the original tape too slow. That's why the pitch would be uniformly lowered across the entire song, or perhaps, the entire tape.

After listening to the actual song, it's kind of crazy how close to the actual pitch/cadence this version is. Possibly the radio release wasn't a demo at all and was in fact just slowed due to the tape being played incorrectly.

I agree that this pitch-corrected version sounds much more natural and much less eerie and "otherworldly".
As a sidenote, I've dug out some of my old audio cassettes from the 80s that got a lot of play back in the day, and the songs played now do sound weird, they're slightly drawn out and in a mildly lower pitch. This might be because my ancient cassette player is spinning more slowly than it used to, but it's not equally noticeable an all tapes so I guess it's also possible that some of the tapes got stretched a bit. Maybe something like this happened with this song, but since we never heard the original, it was not obvious we were listening to a degraded version.

@@CicariEnterprise I think this is close. After reading your comment and relistening, I think it's instead "Like the wind / You're going somewhere" with a little bit of slurring.
This makes the next lyric make more sense, since if you're going somewhere you could take a companion with you, in this case a smile.
It would also recontextualise things slightly, in that the first verse deals with arrival (you *came* running), this verse deals with departure, and the chorus deals with both (Check it *in* / Check it *out*)
I still don't know how to map this to the rest of the lyrics, if they're even right. Which I think they might be after 2:22, given that "summer" could again be "somewhere", and the lyrics don't seem to be repeating.

been mulling over this one for the last several months, and making sure to come in with as fresh a mind as possible. That said, every time I give it a listen, I make sure to afterwards compare what I thought I heard with a lyrics sheet I've been editing and editing along the way... I have a background in music transcription from muddy af MP3s (mainly for practise) among other music-production things, and there are a lot of moments where I've had to try and make sure I'm not hearing a 'phantom syllable' from the vocal delay - that said, I'm pretty certain that I've cemented down what I hear in the lyrics
EDIT: With the released version of the song now discovered, I have added parenthetical alternatives based on the awareness of the full song's lyrics. (?) means I'm still unsure, (v) means I believe this to be what's actually there. I am keeping my original post intact to compare-contrast. Cheers!

I deleted my first comment after having listened to this multiple times and here is my attempt at an analysis. I also posted this as a comment to NAETE’s video.
    The first verse goes,
Like the wind you came here running, take the consequence of living*
There’s no space, there’s no tomorrow,
    There’s no sent communication.
    * In the subtitles it says “leaving” but “living” makes more sense IMO.
This reads like one being born into something where they can’t escape but they have to make do. They also can’t tell anyone about their discomfort of the situation.
This fits the feelings of many young people in the GDR in the 1980s, wanting to leave but not being able to, and even talking about it being dangerous.
    The chorus goes,
Check it in, check it out or the sun will never shine
Paranoid anyway in the subways of your mind
This is the way you had to practise “Doublethink”, pretend to be a loyal socialist citizen but maintaining your true personality, always being careful your disguise wouldn’t fall, but at the same time keeping you sanity.
    The second verse goes,
Like the wind you’re born in summer, let a smile be your companion!
There’s no place and there’s no sorrow,
Hear the young and restless dreamer.
This emphasises this doublethink, and our way to live with the system. We had something called “niche society” where we had a more or less stable peer group and our hobbies, where we disappeared from the official stage of everyday socialist life and faded into our own little worlds.
So, I really think this song was written by an East-German indie band (the arrangement really sounds very clearly GDR-ish) and they managed to sneak this into the hands of a journalist working for the NDR, who then had it played on that show. With this lyrics, you would have never got that through the censorship, let alone published officially. It might have even been possible to face punishment by the state.
This explains that no band name is known, because the Stasi (East-German secret service) was also active in the West and they monitored West-German radio broadcasts. It would have been dangerous for the band to be correctly credited.
Today, either the former band members do not exist anymore, or they don’t know of this phenomenon (I also was today years old and came here from a documentary about the “My House” Doom map), or they do know and find it funny how the whole internet tries to solve this puzzle and nobody has come near so far.

@@luc1264 I had some more thoughts about that and I can also guess how the quality of the recording came to be. The music is quite ok for an obvious amateur recording, but the singing is very muffled. The music sounds as if it was recorded in a studio and the vocals in a garage or cellar. The care which had to be taken if you did something the government didn't like is an important piece of the puzzle.
The music was obviously played on professional equipment, other comments suggest a DX7, which was very hard to come by for amateur musicians in the West, and nearly unreachable for Eastern musicians. However, there were synths that could produce similar sounds made by East-German companies Vermona and Weltmeister. But these were not easy to come by by amateurs, too.
I think the musicians (if more than one) were studio musicians who played the music for pop singers. The state-run studios did have some beefier equipment. So there was a possibility to get to play on professional equipment, but you couldn't record lyrics like these in an official studio, the next day the Stasi would turn up and take you with them, or if you were lucky, you would only get banned from making music ever again.
On the other side, Reel-To-Reel tape was quite popular in the GDR as its quality was better than cassettes and the decks were cheaper than cassette recorders and they could be easily modified to allow overdubbing by just shutting off the erase head, so you could record on already-recorded tape without erasing it first.
So, my guess is: The song was played as an instrumental only piece after official work, recorded to a reel-to-reel-tape, and then, the singer went home, set up the tape deck with an amateur microphone in his cellar or garage and sang over it. Private rooms were sometimes surveyed by the Stasi but mostly only when they had already been suspicious in the first place, so most flats, houses, cellars, garages were rather safe if nobody managed to listen closely and report you. But since the song is sung in English which officially was a rather unpopular language in the GDR, and the type of music was special to young people of that time, most of these "private informers" didn't care and just said, "Oh, that's just this English modern music nobody understands, never mind".

In 1986 i become a member in a local synth/pop band named "The Wild Werewolves". The group had recently changed name from "The Sugar Sweeties". Anyway i played synth which was a big thing at the time. We mostly did own songs but also some covers.
In 1988 two members left the band and two new came into the group. The one i will focus on had the name Martin Kott. The first name is normal but the second was abit odd. He also started playing synth at the start so it was me and he who stood together. Martin never told much about himself but i found it he had lived in east germany since 1979 and pretty much until 1987 or 1988.
In early may 1989 Martin wanted to make 3 songs that had a story line through all three songs. The others in th group said he could do that and the first song he did was "Ride the wind" but in Swedish and with the title "Som en vind" which translates to "Like a wind". The version he made sounded like the Pitched corrected one but was much longer and started with a howling wind before the song came on.
The lyrics in the song are not the same as the uploaded version here. The song is about a man who is searching for a girl that he met and later she dissapears. Theres a forest called "The black forest" where people get in but no one gets out and the man thinks the girl had vanished there. So he´s searching everywhere for her but cant find any trace at all.
In the second track he made the man gets into the woods because he´s hiding from a dangerous rain and he see lots of zombies in the wood but the girl is not among them.
In the third track the man dies from an attack from the zombies and meet his girl in heaven.
We recorded the theee songs on a tape as always and we were happy with the results. I thought the forest could be about the berlin wall and Martin didnt say it was that but hinted also it could be.
The group split around 1992 and some tapes were saved but not all. I dint think very much about the band until i saw on RUclips about this mysterious song. I listened to the song and remembered that we did a swedish version of the song.
Unfortenly Martin died around 2005 or 2006 and i have searched about if he had been in some bands in germany before he came to Sweden but have found nothing that indicates that. None of us that was in the group knows if Martin himself had written these songs or if they were covers. If he had written them its very strange that only "Ride the wind" has surfaced.
The tapes are unfortenly in very bad shape so they sound horrible and i havent found the exact tape with these three melodies. I will continoue search and will post if we find the actual tape and rip it to mp3 file.
I wanted to tell about it even if it may not help to solve the mystery. Maybe someone out there know more about Martin Kott than i did.

    Great remaster, very neat! Thanks!
And I want to share my perception of the lyrics of the song:
I have already listened to several remasters many times, as well as a new version of the film, and now I hear it everywhere
"BETTER KNOWN, anyway, in the subways of your mind",
although I have not seen such a version on the Internet. Also, English is not my native language. Does this text make sense?
But the "paranoid" version is rejected by my brain, and even more so any "there are ..", since the first sound is clearly from the letter "b" or "p". However, the following "long dirty/lonely/only way" fits well as a lyric. Easy to get wrong :)
And at the end, where many people hear "is it really you/ leaving you", in one of the refrains a sillable is clearly heard - 's' both times (like "blues / exuse") - and if we assume that the refrains are identical, and at the beginning 's' is just swallowed - the "... real/feel/(smth) excuse" version is much more likely.
And the weirdest part is with "tear it in/out" at the end, like it's two different words. Something like :
Check it in, check it out
    (...summer blues)
[take it in, check it out]
[Tear it in, shake it out]
    (...real excuse)
The difference of words is especially distinct on the second refrain, or maybe it is only in even refrains??? Difficult! :)
p.s.: sorry for the auto translation :)

Really interesting story of this song :D For me the vocal sounds a bit like a certain Polish vocalist - Kaptain Nemo (Bogdan Tadeusz Gajkowski) :D Kapitan Nemo - Wideonarkomania or Kapitan Nemo - Jeszcze Tylko Chwila. Of course, the voice is not identical, but it has something similar in my opinion and the timbre of the voice itself can change over time. In 1982, Captain Nemo was 32 - so that would fit too :)

For some reason, even this little pitch change also changes the tone of the song. Not by much, but this version sounds more nostalgic instead of depressing. Maybe it’s the video that’s giving me the impression, but idk.

I say speed it up by an additional 4 percent. Makes the fourth chord of the song E. If we argue that the fourth chord is the key of the song, it would put the song in E, and the chords would be vi, IV, V, I. E is a super common key for guitar music. Also, adjusting the song to that speed makes the singer sound more natural.

It's odd, the vocals on this versions feel correct, yet the synth sounds way too high. The opposite of course is true for the original. Almost makes me wonder if the singer's voice was intentionally pitched down in the original song.

This is my take on the lyrics. I hear "Check it in, check it out" said differently when the chorus repeats itself towards the end of the song, and I tried to maintain the melancholic and somewhat bittersweet yet still hopeful feeling the song gives, basing my take around a theme of "No matter where you are, what you're doing, or whatever walk of life you come from, whether it's adventurous and exciting or mundane and simple, just keep moving like the wind, and live to the fullest." This feels like the appropriate key to me - doesn't feel off-putting even mildly and the lyrics are more clear than the original version.
    ----------------------
Like the wind, you came running
    Take the consequence of living
There's no space, there's no tomorrow
    There's no sense communicating
    Checking in, checking out
'Cause the sun will never shine
    Paranoid anyway
In the subways of your mind
Like the wind, you're gone in summer
Let a smile be your companion
There's no place, and there's no sorrow
Hear the young and restless dreaming
    Checking in, checking out
'Cause the sun will never shine
    Paranoid anyway
In the subways of your mind
    Checking in, checking out
'Cause the sun will never shine
    Paranoid anyway
In the subways of your mind
    Checking in, checking out
    'Cause the summer blew
Let it in, take it out
    Just believe in you
Check it in, check it out
    It's the summer blues
Let it in, let it out
    It's still leading you
Check it in, check it out
    It's the summer blues
Let it in, let it out
    It's still leading you
