I love that a lot of people take "well she turned down Brock" as partial evidence for the Ivy theory, as though Brock doesn't get turned down _constantly_
Funny thing is, he doesn't nearly as much as one would think. Kanto he was just kind of ignored for the most part, then in Johto and beyond he gets pulled away by Misty/Croagunk before the woman could reply.
@@mrshmuga9 That doesn't really matter. You know how, in Casey's introduction episode, Brock wonders if she has an older sister in the dub? Well, in the Japanese version, he instead says that she'll be real interesting in 8 years. Plus, Kanto and the Orange Islands had, like, a half-dozen 40+-year-old men flirt with Misty. Age gaps aren't important to Pokémon writers, especially in the old days.
Citing "bug collecting" as """proof""" for Tajiri's autism shows an incredible lack of cultural awareness from whoever decided to list that in the rumour mill - collecting bugs is a pretty common hobby in Japan (and many heroes like Kamen Rider have design elements that recall bugs because of their popularity as a whole), and a lot of franchises over the decades have used this as a way to transpose that hobby into something that could be sold. Kinnikuman figures have been a thing since 1983, and they're all about collecting them all.
The thought process of collecting anyhing means your autistic cause "thats what people with autisim usually do" is the dumbest thing I've heard. It infuriates me.
I truly don't understand how collecting bugs equals to autism. Kids collect weird stuff all the time. I used to collect bugs as a kid and I don't have autism.
These were old times and Autism was a much more negative word. Nowadays People understand and deal with autism better, as now most people are aware Autism is a Spectrum and activist Groups like Autism Speaks are Evil for demonizing Autism like a Disease. Overall, I think Satoshi might be high on the Autism scale, but who cares? He helped create Pokemon, The biggest Media Franchise in the world. Even If He was High on the spectrum, he was still very sucessful.
Even more dumb when considering the timeframe. Those articles/book were in the early 2000’s or later, by young adults or adults. Girls were collecting Barbie’s since the 60’s and the 90’s had the Beanie Baby craze. Collecting was by no means a new concept to the people writing said articles, and were well aware millions of kids collected them. To suggest collecting things is some niche hobby, only for those who are eclectic or “divergent” is ridiculous. It’s the same argument as saying, “H*tler liked dogs, and you like dogs, therefore you’re a N*zi!”.
People think he’s autistic because he’s shy and he was a collector? Those aren’t exclusive to autism tho anyone can be shy or a collector or both They are stereotyping
I appreciate the Ivy Twitter guy and the book writer both admitting they were wrong to not research better and admit they probably got it wrong. Surprisingly mature responses. I figured everyone would double down even harder.
I find it kinda funny that the last myth went in all sorts of different directions. Twitter -> Article sites -> Back to Twitter -> Tweet deleted -> Dude named DragonMilfs reposts the original tweet -> Japanese Pokemon fans sharing the myth -> Rule 34. What a wild ride lol
6:56 Respect for owning up to past mistakes. Also for the bounty to continue that. Very impressed with the research you guys put into videos like these.
"Apparently she's written over 100 books, most within a few weeks" Those are either some short books, some bad books, or she can just type _damn_ fast. Possibly all 3.
I think the quote meant she wrote most of her over 100 books in a few weeks each, not that it only took her a few weeks to pump out most of the over 100 book
@@TwoPairSA A good book, regardless of whether it's fiction or biographical, can take months to years to write. Fiction has the advantage of only really needing internal logical consistency, while fact needs to be fact checked, sourced, and verified, even after the initial research phase. If a full biography of anyone is written in just a few weeks, it probably has about as much thorough research as an undergrad research paper squeezed out six hours before the deadline, at most.
@@NoobixCube You´re absolutely right, just the editing time it´s a nightmare so the fact that anyone could publish books in weeks makes me think she´s more of a puppet author, meaning she only shows her face and image while undepaid workers do the actual "work": half-assed research to fill a quota so the publishing can spit books faster so they can ride on the hype train of the moment and snatch some easy money.
@@NoobixCube these aren't those though... info books, recipe books, how to books, quasi-guide books, often don't need much more than copy pasting spread sheets and other haphazardly researched facts and figures... especially so for books aimed at children.
Also, about Professor Ivy - note that the gag with Brock courting women usually ended with him getting dragged away or knocked out (Misty, Max and his Croagunk have had the role of putting an end to his shenanigans), seldom being rejected directly. It's likely that Brock doesn't deal well with being outright rejected, and without Misty to stop the scene, Professor Ivy might have just rejected Brock because she's not interested in him.
fair point. i suppose it also makes sense since the novel flat out states that he's not actually looking for a girlfriend (though he thinks he is): he's looking for a new mother to replace the one that abandoned him and his family and that's why he goes after older women.
@@DKen2021 Brock being a teenager doesn't necessarily mean much in why he was rejected by Ivy. It was the late-90s/early-2000s, so Brock and Ivy actually hooking up could have easily gone under the radar as something we don't question back then and laugh about in a "man, that was weird" thing later. Especially since surprising amount of people I talked to over the years didn't realize Brock was only a teenager for YEARS.
A few months ago I saw someone bring up the "Satoshi Tajiri is Autistic" thing and tried to debunk it to them due to the fact it lacked any credible sources, but they just got pissed at me for it. I'm Autistic myself so yes it may be sad to see it's not true, but I value making sure information is correct more. Thanks for looking into this and giving others a place to point to as proof this isn't real in the future.
@Marav Reviews personality modifier. I like that! I am going to use that from now on for stuff like Highly Sensitive People, Autism, Gifted people etc. Way more appropriate than 'condition' or 'disorder'. Hate those words unless it's something that the person themselves suffer from.
It's really weird to me @Marlotix because the (highly functioning) autistic people I know, all value the truth more than 'how good it feels'. So seeing a group of people trying to elevate themselves on false claims is just sad to see. There are many autistic people who actually did amazing things. There is no need to force-fit it here.
@@JaelinBezel because people don't like to be told, that they're wrong. Even if you have concrete proof of something with evidence to back it up, they'll just throw it aside with no proof of their own.

1. This is the first time I've ever heard the "Satoshi is autistic" rumor, and based on your research...dang, man, those people sound ignorant as hell. "But he collected bugs!" I've worked with or around autistic kids nearly my whole life and man _half_ of them couldn't care less about collecting anything. If he _does_ have autism, totally cool. But you just force something like that upon someone as a means to somehow feel more self-righteous or whatever. That's idiotic. 2. I always thought that "Ditto is a failed Mew clone" was just a fun fan theory. Like, "Hey, maybe a programmer or two got the idea and decided to put a bunch of Ditto in the Mansion", you know? Not some super secret lore that GameFreak has been hiding from us, but rather a tiny little developer gag or something. Frankly, I've always liked the idea, but I don't have to wait for GF to officially announce it as canon to enjoy it. 3. ...Man, the internet is so bored, isn't it? Like, collectively and consistently.
The autism thing gets worse when you realize the source is someone assuming the dev was autistic because he's.... wait for it... "reclusive and eccentric."
i had never actually heard about any of these rumors - as i am a normal well adjusted human - but i still loved the video just from how well made and researched it was. 10/10
@@tikalthewhimsicott2736 According to this part of a Winnipeg Free Press article about misinformation: ""FALSEHOOD flies, and the truth comes limping after it." If you think that quote comes from someone studying the spread of misinformation through social media, think again. Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels, wrote those words in 1710, more than 300 years ago. The quote has been rephrased and repeated many times in many ways. It is often misquoted and attributed to someone else. One version - "a lie can travel around the world and back again while the truth is lacing up its boots" - is often wrongly attributed to everyone from Mark Twain to Winston Churchill. The quote is so popular because it is so true. It is human nature to spread and believe falsehoods. The truth always has an uphill battle. After all, false claims are much more interesting. Anyone else find assigning a person a mental disorder, solely based on minor details like their hobbies, incredibly odd and inappropriate? Especially in the case of Tajiri, there's a lot of assumptions and simply not knowing how cultures can differ.
Autism is no longer considered as a Mental disorder, it now comes under the umbrella term Neurodivergence. Especially Autism is classed as a neurodevelopmental disorder.
Thank you for putting so much research into the Autism claim. I have Autism and love seeing others diagnosed with it succeed, but at the same time I hate it when people try to identify it through stereotypes. Not every introvert is autistic.
Right? I've met literally dozens of people with Autism that 99% of people (besides maybe some other folks with autism, perhaps) would never realize they have it; they're perfectly "normal" (whatever that means!) in appearance and mannerism and you'd only really ever know for sure if they told you! And on the flip side of that coin, there's tons of people who have a bunch of stereotypical "autistic" traits that aren't actually autistic at all (well, I guess not "at all", since it's a spectrum I guess[?]), like me! I've has so many people ask me if I'm autistic and I always say "no. And maybe don't ask people that when you just met them" and some people have the audacity to say "umm I think you do, you should get checked". Golly gee, super cool :| You're right though, more visibility would always be cool. But at the same time, it's also kinda neat to think about how many autistic people are succeeding _right now,_ but we just have no idea because, as you clearly already know, autism presents in tons of different ways (especially in women!) and isn't always noticeable anyway!
Thanks for saying this! I'm not autistic but one of the things I hate is when someone who's rude to other people is given a pass because "they're probably autistic." That's BS. If they're rude it's probably because their parents didn't teach them how to operate normally in society or they feel they don't have to for whatever reason. And even if they are autistic it isn't an excuse to be an asshole. It makes people on the spectrum look bad and I have a creeping suspicion that people who say those things pity those on the spectrum as subhumans rather than seeing them as people who happen to act slightly different and have a general outlook that's influenced by something you can't relate to. To a lot of people anything other than "neurotypical white person" is viewed as "weird af and deserving of pity."

Exactly what I was going to say. The amount of news sites/companies/organizations citing each other’s reports is astounding when you start to fact check. And that number only increases when the news sites, etc. share a common political affiliation or community they cater to
And BIG publications do the same thing. I constantly see major outlets like Fox, CNN, and the New York Times fall for stuff like this when it's convenient to whatever propaganda they're pushing. Edit: to be clear, they're not actually "falling" for anything. Shit's intentional

@Entrr_Username At 6:55 in this very video, they admit to spreading bad pokemon info, and now they're redeeming themselves with fact checked information. What don't you understand here
It's interesting, most "fact" sharing channels tend to do the opposite - Starting with genuine facts, with maybe a small handful of rumors and mistakes, but as they go on, they put out more and more half-true, poorly researched, or blatantly false content just to pad out videos and garner views. But here we have DYKG going from a channel that occasionally accidentally spread rumors and mistakes, to realizing that as they garner more and more views, they feel a responsibility to making sure the facts the present are as accurate as possible.
I really appreciate this content, not just quoting random information found on the internet, but actually doing research and proving facts, thanks for the effort
Here’s a good one - birthday pikachu is a card which is banned in the tcg, and people share a fun story about why it’s banned that’s categorically incorrect- I stumbled into it in research for a video project I was working on and I’d be happy to share the sources!
It’s a ban so sweeping that it covers the rarely banned unlimited format, and the reason is way more interesting than the “judges didn’t like it” explanation people on Twitter love to give lmao
@@megadong2398 birthday pikachu was never actually legal in competitive play - it was banned before it even released because of a situation with ancient mew that caused the designers to reconsider what cards they localized to america. certainly the birthday aspect is part of why its banned, but its more just that its one of the only promo cards from japan with text on the actual card saying they cant be used in competitive play that actually made its way to being localized into america, and american localization teams didnt have any way to prevent its play than to give an official ruling (rather than putting text on the card like they do in japan, for whatever reason)
I'm honestly glad you debunked the "Satoshi Tajiri has autism myth". Everytime I see someone state that I always ask for a concrete source but none outwardly says that he has autism, only claiming that he does. As for the other two myths I'm sorry but I love the failed Mew clone theory too much, and as for Prof Ivy being a Lesbian, I never heard that till today.
Yeah, I don't care if Satoshi is on the spectrum or not. The Mew/Ditto Theory is one of my personal favorite and while it is not actual Pokemon lore, It gave a cool spot to what ditto is. As for the Professor Ivy Being Lesbian, I have heard of it but it's one of those characters whose personality was probably lost through Localization, with her personality being of a Hot Woman who is not much into Guys, not because She is Lesbian, but because she focuses on her career as a Pokemon professor. Overall, The point of this video is about these theories are more of a representation of How Pokemon fans (Or fans in any media general) Take Statements too far and treat them like fact when in reality there is some Nuance in them to the point which are untrue.
To summarize most of this video and tons of rumors in general: "That's very nice and all, but why don't you back it up with a source!" "My source is that I made it the f*** up!"

The work you guys have been putting out these past two or so years is nothing short of amazing. This channel and the team behind it is outstanding!! 👍
Hmmmm the Ditto debunking actually got me thinking...what if the Cinnabar scientists used Ditto as a way to learn how to clone instead of it being a failed clone?
That's exactly what RuinManiac (great channel, deserves more subs) proposed in an old video There are far more things pointing toward "Ditto is an Alien", while "Ditto is a Mew Clone" gets all the attention despite having nothing to support it

I believe that Nintendo knew eventually that this video idea would eventually get made shortly before and after they said what they were thinking about saying, as well as afterwards as well before actually writing it down as well. Definitely all of the information was there minus the visual cues.
I am recalling something specifically about the books being only planned to be made before Ash even went to the Jhoto region to begin or something like that. I would have to resort to the quote talking about it to explain it any further. The quote did mention something about the books ending before Ash even encounter Proffesor Ivy though.
18:24 i honestly wasnt expecting that to come up. lol. this was an interesting video and i LIKE IT. the best part is hearing the lengths of research for the original language to assure nothing was literally lost in translation by way of omission due to cultural differences or even just changed overseas just to "spice things up" as what tends to happen.
Brock's negative reaction to when someone asks him about Professor Ivy has always intrigued me. I've always thought of several possibilities as to what could be the reason for this, but I've always considered one the most plausible: her dump was so traumatic it left him like that. Let's face it: who among us has never suffered like hell from being rejected by someone we liked a lot? Brock was a teenager discovering stuff about life and the first hard rejection really messed up with him.
Maybe she was the one that got away? Some rejections just hurt more than others. It's been ages since I've seen the early seasons, but if I'm not mistaken Brock was usually rejected upon meeting someone. However, the clips in this vid make me think the two spent some time together that Brock wasn't just infatuated with her, but actually got to know her a little bit.
@@PelemusMcSoy As I recall, he did get to stay with her, which is why he was absent from the orange islands arc of the series (if you go by why he was written out of the series at that time, it was because they were afraid he would be precieved negatively because of his race or something like that, I can't exactly recall). Because Brock had a major crush on her, he probably thought their relationship WAS going to go somewhere in the future, not to mention I think she was the first person to actually give him a chance, which had to have gotten his hopes up quite a bit; looking at it that way, it's no wonder he was so heartbroken by being rejected by her. As for the theory of her being a lesbian, while this is the first time I've heard it personally, from the clips shown that were used in this video, it looks like it may have been speculation due to a combination of all her assistants being girls (and all pretty young girls at that), along with the fact that she rejected Brock. In the former case, it seems highly unlikely to me, as it looks more like she was their mentor than anything else, not to mention the fact that it would be quite creepy if she actually was romantically interested in any of them. As for the latter point, I think it was expected at that point in time that she and Brock were going to wind up together for reasons I already said above, so the fact that she wasn't interested in him probably made her look like she had a preference for females instead. Not that I believe either of these reasons to be good justifications for this theory, but it's my best guess as to what people were thinking when they made this theory, as stupid as they admittedly sound

Mew is a fetus and Ditto is a glob of stem cells. it was LITERALLY the equivalent of experimenting on animals and cloning, two VERY taboo topics that don't sit well with the image of a "kids" game. Remember the whips? Gamefreak tries to skirt the line with adding heavy topics to their games over the years but always tries their best not to directly explain them in interviews and just hope that the kids will grow up understanding what they meant and not have their parents block them from learning.
Final Fantasy fans do it too. A popular fan theory for Final Fantasy VIII involves a Vanilla Sky like plot twist where the main character dies fairly early in the game- at the end of disc one when the game is four discs long. Fans cite the events of the next three discs being "wackier" and " too hard a pivot" to be the natural next series of events following the first disc. I think people like this theory because they perceive the game to be poorly written otherwise. The game's lead writer eventually debunked this theory, but only after 20 years of speculation, but people still believe this fan theory is true regardless.
It's because fan theories are just a fun way to overanalyze media. They're head canons. Nobody cares what the developer actually intended. Most of us anyway. We know that very few fan theories are what the developer's really intended. We're just having fun.
Thanks for making this video. I'm @Deathlordpopo (Crimson), the person who made the professor ivy tweet. I honestly shouldn't have made that claim and it was my fault for even making that tweet based off a dubious source. That was kinda dumb of me 😭. I appreciate you correcting and putting a pause to the misinfo. That shit is crazy Just a few things to note though: 1. I warned dragonmilfs about how questionable it was but told them not to worry too much since at the time Bulbapedia had it as a piece of trivia on Ivy's page, as if there were a source for it. It was my fault for even consulting a site that checks their sources as well as I did 🤦🏿♂️. Through that, I enabled her not deleting that tweet. A few minutes before writing this comment I just asked her to delete that tweet. 2. I deleted the tweet after looking through shudo's notes myself. After I couldn't find anything, I asked Lava to seek a source as I deleted the tweet. Months later, he interviewed me for this video and it turns out he couldn't find a source 😔.
That is exactly what Nintendo wants you to think about Ivy being lesbian or not. They placed the actual information about whether she was a lesbian or not in a honestly randomly location online that I did not even want to save for later more specifically because Nintendo does not want someone to. The information also directly mentions something related to NOT GIVING THE INFORMATION TO CONTENT CREATORS OR PERMISSION NOT TO POST IN A PIN UNDER A PERSONAL CHANNEL AND TO DELETE IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF IT WAS ALREADY DONE ALREADY!!!!! Some people might have already possibly found the quote and website, but they are respecting Nintendo's demands and not posting them online. This was written before Twitter even was created in the first place as well.

The “ditto is a failed mew clone” theory is one of my favorite Pokémon fan theories so it’s sad that it wasn’t an intended part of the series. At least it’s still true in my head canon Edit: The theory isn’t that big of a deal, calm down. It was a cool idea and there some connections that could have been hints, but it wasn’t planned and we can’t act like Pokémon is building up some grand conspiracy. Too many people want to act like the Pokémon Company is so brilliant but not everything has a deeper meaning
The best theories are usually unintended, untrue or later broken by the developers because it wasn't picked up upon. I remember the: Mass Effect 3, Shepherd was indoctrinated theory. It totally held water. There was a massive outcry that the fans hated ME3 for it's conclusion. So they changed it so the theory hold no water anymore. That was truly sad. At least the Ditto theory can still be enjoyed as a profound thought the internet had.
Really, we don't know if none of the designers who worked on Ditto might actually had the idea, but decided to not actually put it in as they wanted to focus on the relaitonship between Mew and Mewtwo. When it comes down to it, both Mew and Ditto are the only Pokemon who can natural transform into all other Pokemon. Mew can do it because it has all the DNA of all Pokemon and Ditto being failed clones would explain how it's DNA is felxible enough to copy the DNA of all Pokemon (It also just looks like a failed experiment). And the theme of becoming all Pokemon also fits the evened out stats. Mewtwo is a clone with DNA reworked to be more human like what makes it so different from Mew.

Not just in pokemon but in basically everything; people come up with ideas and decide they like it and it should be true. That's not how things work, that's not how something is true.
Thats why fandoms make up words like headcanons. As long as it's not a theory that directly contradicts or changes what is true in the story, there's nothing inherently wrong with believing for yourself and it usually enrichs the experience of the story. You just won't win any debates cause headcanons are beliefs not facts.
My head canon for Ditto and Mew is thus: They were trying to clone mew, and they brought a bunch of Dittos because they are capable of changing into anything, not that Ditto is a failed experiment.
I was thinking similar watching that part of the video. It was part of the experiments, but not a failed result, just studied in attempts to make it work or having its DNA used to help. What better Pokemon to use as a base for bringing anything back from a fossil than one that can already become anything? It also gives a good reason for it to be found in the mansion.
Personally I just assume Ditto is one of the first pokemon that Mew created out of bacteria, which due to its unstable DNA caused it to evolve over time into every other pokemon we know today, and that the Ditto in the mansion were either brought in because of that connection or were the result of cloning Mew, and in the latter's case the reason there's no in-game documentation on this is because a lot of it was destroyed during Mewtwo's escape. I know people will tell me I'm wrong because the Pokemon fun fact channel said so but I don't really care tbh.
@@Girkirbythesecond It sounds like you say Mew is the creator (bacteria???) of all Pokémon/god, but that's kinda Arceus' role (even if it came way later), also I don't think it's older than prehistoric Pokémon

Thank you for debunking the autism claim, coming from someone on the spectrum themselves. While I am confident there are a lot of neurodivergent (ADHD, ASD, OCD, etc) people who work in the games industry, this claim seemed incredibly shaky from the start if you know anything about how Japan treats mental health. I’d venture to say that the general understanding and sympathy towards mental health issues is further behind in Japan than the United States, as there are very limited resources for neurodivergent people, and it’s the fastest way to get othered if you bring it up. Things are getting better, but it would be a ballsy move to claim you have autism, while working for a Japanese company, in the 1990s or 2000s; if he said that back then, he could’ve gotten in a lot of trouble. It also shows a severe lack of cultural awareness on the English-speaking side for them to site bug collecting and him being withdrawn as speculative evidence. Bug collecting is a very common traditional activity for kids, especially beetles, and setting them up to fight one another. There are a few other games based on this, I believe there’s even a super popular Sega arcade title based completely around beetle fighting (cannot remember the name of it, unfortunately). Japan, as a general culture, tends to value privacy. Although vlogging and promotional events are on the rise even in Japan, a lot of time is spent to blur the faces of people who did not consent to being on camera. The US and other English-speaking places do have consent forms and blurring as well, but the concern for privacy is not unanimous and is often not regarded as much as it is in Japan. While some game devs do have social media and post frequently, it’s not super uncommon for some to just want to keep to themselves. It’s not inherently a sign of shyness or having social issues. Same goes for many other people from different parts of the world, but I think the US/English-speaking cultures are more willing to share themselves due to pride in individuality.
I'm also on the spectrum and as much as I would find it cool if it were true that he has it too, I'm mostly glad that I hadn't run into the rumor before. Would have gotten my hopes up since Pokemon was my original special interest growing up. I don't exactly interact with pop culture nowadays, but this is spurring me into doing some personal research on creators who are like us. It'd be nice to have someone to look up to.
I imagine stating one’s on the spectrum in most countries, not just Japan, would get you othered back in the nineties since the general public knew little about it back then.
@@psychokinrazalon oh yes, absolutely. When writing my comment, I tried to account for this, because I knew what happened, but since I didn’t grow up with a proper diagnosis or understanding during that time, I also forgot it happened pretty much everywhere as well.
I appreciate you bringing this up. I'm honestly surprised this rumor wasn't debunked earlier as a lot of "evidence" presented in its favor tends to be based on inferences and stereotypes of how autistic people act. But I guess that's citogenesis for ya!
I always liked the idea of ditto being a failed clone from mewtwo, but it's very interesting to see a lower tone debunking of it. Actually, this brings a new meaning to staples of the series, like mew being the "gene 0" creature, and studies of ditto's mimic being fundamental for mewtwo's creation. Sounds more soothing actually, the relations of these pokemon become more subjective and less concrete.
Don't you just love when people do a lot of fact checking on something and when you show someone definitive proof of rumor that is true or false, they still think you're wrong.
I always though the Ditto theory was just a fun “what if?” everybody tossed around because the similarities and coincidences are cool, like the Ash coma theory or the Ed, Edd, and Eddy purgatory theory. Didn’t know so many people just legitimately think it’s implied and Gamefreak is subtly confirming it to anyone who is smart enough to notice the clues and nobody can convince them otherwise. That’s “Paul is dead” levels of delusion.
i got to thinking the same thing, so i clicked the thumbnail. now i'm curious, can ditto transform into a human or is it something that was just for a movie?
I think this video answers that question. Masada said they create each Pokémon as it’s own seperate character. So unless the game states it directly (in text or through a regional variant or evolution), then there’s no connection. But I also don’t remember the exact text in Gold/Silver. I vaguely recall Pokémon being in the building, nearly dying (or dying) and being reborn into those forms. But I’d have to check to make sure I didn’t mix up something crucial with a fan theory.
@@mrshmuga9 it does state that the legendary beasts are Pokemon that were saved or revived (can't recall which, might be one in the games and the other in the show?) by Ho-Oh when the Burned Tower burned down. But they never say which Pokemon they were. We don't know if they were different Pokemon entirely or if they were as they are now and that incident is just why they are legendary. The spin-off episodes showing things like that showed it happening, but just showed 3 shadowy figures, vaguely dog or cat shaped, for the Pokemon.
I really enjoy the focus on citation and research and that your video game facts channel actually focuses on facts! It's great to see in this day of widespread rumor and hearsay.
My reaction to debunked theory 1: Thank you for your research. It is wild how journalists forego their professional duties in favor of easy shortcuts. The mainstreaming of disinformation is, indeed, highly disconcerting for the future of the world. My reaction to debunked theory 2: You are a thief of joy.
As an autistic person myself who believed the rumor about Tajiri being autistic, I thought that was going to be the most shocking revelation in the video. Then it just casually dropped on me that Ditto can apparently canonically breed with anything and now I need to think about that for a bit.
Bro ditto being a player is literally its main thing besides being able to transform, You not knowing that is more shocking than anything in the video lmao
This process of following sources back and only coming up with baseless claims on blogs and wikis reminds me a lot of what Potholer54 does. It's a good practice that more people should do, it's not actually THAT hard to trace some links and titles back, and when finding no particularly good citations, just accept that, no, this isn't something we should perpetuate.
Same type of thinking that happens with this stupid rumor that KEEPS popping up about Kurt Cobain from Nirvana having written an unused theme song for Ren and Stimpy. It's one of the most asinine theories ever, but everyone not only keeps taking it seriously like this is real, but claim this is actual lost media and people are still wasting their lives trying to track this down. I've done exhaustive research on Spumco and Ren and Stimpy for over 15 years and anyone who knows even a portion of what I do about them and the production of the show knows this is baseless and ridiculous. But the internet somehow keeps justifying one of the dumbest and crackiest rumors anyone has ever heard. SOMEONE online started this and somehow something as laughable as THIS got treated like a legitimate Lost Media hunt.
The ditto mew theory kind of reminds me of the "Zero killed everyone" theory for the mega man series. The fandom wants it to be true so badly that they flat out reject developer statements that debunk them.
It's not so much that people want it to be true so bad that they reject the developer statements, but the fact that fan theories are almost never created with the expectation that it's what the developer intended. Almost no fan theories are what the developers intended and we all know it. Most of us anyway. They're just for fun. Yet people seem to get so unreasonably angry at fan theories and go out of their way to try debunk them by claiming the developer could not have possibly intended it, as if that matters in the slightest.
@@darrenmacqueen9884 Then again, the designer and creator of Zero said "no, he didn't, he wouldn't be online at the same time" Which was met with "he just doesn't want us to know THE TRUTH"
@@matthewwilliams8267 I'm not familiar with the Megaman X games or this theory. But I've made similar comments in jest before concerning fan theories and developers statements. Are you sure most of them weren't joking? Some of them might have been serious, but most people I know see fan theories as a fun pass time and they don't really care what the developers think.
eh, im lukewarm on that. No developer statements outright debunked the theory, all the statements did is tell us the devs likely weren't *aware* of the theory. That means while unintentional, it could still be made canon, all we'd need is a dev confirming it. Things like that happen all the time in these longer running franchises. I cant think of an example off the top of my head but im sure its happened.
You can't blame people, though, because that's a hell of a coincidence. Like the video said, one or the other shared plenty of coincidences, like color and height, with plenty of pokemon. Though while they went one by one fine, the fact that so many line up for the two does seem like there's more attachment.
Also, actually, they talked a lot about the pokemons' creation, but never about if the fan theory was unofficially adopted, or intention changed. Which it could have.
@@denverarnold6210 But Ditto and Mew aren't the same color or height?? Mew was originally white and is now pink. Ditto is purple. There's literally nothing connecting them. Every piece of evidence has a leap you have to make to believe it. It's completely fine if you want to take it as a headcanon, but it's not actually canon. Like the video says, are you going to claim Ditto and Cloyster are connected too? They actually are the same height and color, and that's all it apparently takes. And yes, they didnt say the fan theory wasn't adopted, but that isn't even close to being any kind of evidence. The guy didn't even know about it till someone asked him, why would he change the lore to match it without telling anyone?
I feel the need to talk about the culture of MySpace. Role play profiles were just kind if a thing….especially as an outlet for social outcasts or otherwise “divergent” people.
Way too many coincidences honestly. The shiny palette, locations, and the transform bit especially. I think Death of the Author applies in this case. I think looking at what is in the game shines some credence to this. And it is also important to note that the theory is still plausible as an in-game explanation even after taking into account DYKG's rebuttals
I remember the golden rule of the internet back when it first came out... Not everything posted on the internet is true. These people... So easily convinced and confused. Awesome video by the way. Excellent research.

One theory I would personally like to see get debunked that I was hoping would be mentioned in this video is the one about how you allegedly "killed" your rival's Raticate during the battle you have with him on the S.S. Anne, given the fact that he no longer has it in his party after that fight, and the next time you meet him is at the Pokemon tower in Lavander Town where the graves of dead Pokemon are kept being the 2 main points that "support" this theory

This is pokemon, you can easily cover any holes the more bs. i.e. Just say, due to the power of legendary dna, the experiment caused a space/time rift, sending ditto throughout the world and into the past.... or just say arceus did something. Anything can be true if you go that route.

Thank you so much for debunking these obnoxious rumors. So many people think that jus because some article makes a claim, even a well known publication, that it must be true. It absolutely can be false despite who makes the claim. Sources are so essential to understand and they are not all created equal.
I love this kind of research, it's so easy to take fun facts and treat them like gospel. I have definitely perpetuated these rumors to people throughout the years without really looking into them. Even after you presented undeniable evidence against a Mew and Ditto connection it's so hard for my brain to comprehend that this might just be people drawing connections where they don't exist.
I do wonder how much the mew/ditto connection will become canon retroactively though as movies like Detective Pikachu further imply a connection between the two. If Pokemon Legends can just casually say that Pokemon have the unique power to shrink themselves, another game can add a Pokedex entry saying Ditto is a failed clone of Mew.
@@Goretantath Mistreatment of Mewtwo is already a confirmed thing. It seems like a small step to say Ditto is a failed attempt that was released into the wild.
I love that a lot of people take "well she turned down Brock" as partial evidence for the Ivy theory, as though Brock doesn't get turned down _constantly_
They magically forget that she’s clearly a much older adult and Brock is… a teenager. Somehow that significant age discrepancy is forgotten.
I always thought she told Brock she doesn't need his help anymore. Probably in an way that he didn't take too well.
I like to think if she did turn him down romantically it was because Brock is a 15 year old
Funny thing is, he doesn't nearly as much as one would think.
Those aren’t exclusive to autism tho anyone can be shy or a collector or both
They are stereotyping

It's likely that Brock doesn't deal well with being outright rejected, and without Misty to stop the scene, Professor Ivy might have just rejected Brock because she's not interested in him.
Professor Ivy is an adult while Brock himself was a teenagee at the time, I'm pretty sure that wasn't going to go anywhere beyond that.
fair point. i suppose it also makes sense since the novel flat out states that he's not actually looking for a girlfriend (though he thinks he is): he's looking for a new mother to replace the one that abandoned him and his family and that's why he goes after older women.

Autism is no longer considered as a Mental disorder, it now comes under the umbrella term Neurodivergence. Especially Autism is classed as a neurodevelopmental disorder.
Yeah it sound really ignorant and at point offensive.
Tajiri doesn't engage with the media much, kinda like a recluse. He must be autistic!!!
No I'm pretty sure it's the media keep calling him autistic.
Yeah the BBC has a strange hate-boner for Japan for some reason, especially their media
Reminds me of something else that's happening a lot lately. Claiming a person or character is gay or trans based on similar foundations.
Golly gee, super cool :|
You're right though, more visibility would always be cool.
They're basically asking people to prove a negative. Make something up and assume it's true until you're provided concrete evidence otherwise.
It's people who whine about "conspiracy theorists" who say they only accept facts from "trusted sources", regardless of the evidence supporting the claim in question. By the way, you might not want to use a term coined by the CIA in the 70s to discredit people who questioned them.

Fuck this is great. I love this redemption arc of going from starting/proliferating rumors to now debunking them with the integrity and recourses garnered over the years of running this channel. Great work, DYKG.
Redemption arc for what? There wasn't any instance for that for you to type this.

@@Myserval thank you for explaining. I just watched your the first murder animation and I loved it, cheers have a good day
certainly the birthday aspect is part of why its banned, but its more just that its one of the only promo cards from japan with text on the actual card saying they cant be used in competitive play that actually made its way to being localized into america, and american localization teams didnt have any way to prevent its play than to give an official ruling (rather than putting text on the card like they do in japan, for whatever reason)

That’s why it’s a theory and not actual proof. The mew and ditto is not a confirmed connection but a big coincidence

DYKG has a pretty big history of incorrect information, but in recent years they've amazingly moved past that.
Hes... been rejected a LOT of times
@@matthewkuscienko4616 they got rid of him because of the whole jynx blackface thing as they were afraid having someone with darker skin would get them more backlash. the opposite occurred and they brought him back until the end of gen 4 which leads into him being removed again only coming back only for japan only specials until gen 7. around this time yet another controversy resulting in the writers making another mistake which lasted until recently. namely, the narrator of the japanese version of the Pikachu & Pichu short, noriko sakai, was arrested in 2009 and later convicted of possession and abuse of drugs resulting in the short being the only anime episode banned only in japan and was removed from canon. while there have been other cases of people working on pokemon using drugs of some kind or another, this was only one that involved a j-pop singer that had a sizable following and was being cut off even by the company that had supported her from the 80s until then. anyway, this short is the one where ash tells pikachu its the anniversary of when they first met(his 10th birthday.) as soon as the then airing season ended, they started the ash is eternally 10 nonsense which stuck until they finally realized ash had been around for too long and scrapped him for liko and ̶b̶o̶o̶t̶l̶e̶g̶ ̶l̶e̶o̶n̶ roy

Loved that little cough at the mentioning of the "ditto is a failed clone of mew" theory, it's ok we all go through a weird phase
I'm still going down with that ship. No reason it couldn't *get* canonized if the fandom keeps it alive.
This is the kind of quality research I like to see. Keep up the good work!
That shit is crazy
Just a few things to note though:
You don't need to be so embarrassed, dude, you're fine!
It takes courage to admit one's fault. Thank you for your honesty!

This was written before Twitter even was created in the first place as well.
dude you're completely fine! it's a fun idea and you don't have responsibility over a miniscule fun fact like this somehow getting out of your friend circle, you obviously weren't spreading misinformation on purpose.
The “ditto is a failed mew clone” theory is one of my favorite Pokémon fan theories so it’s sad that it wasn’t an intended part of the series. At least it’s still true in my head canon
Edit: The theory isn’t that big of a deal, calm down.
@@JosephBlack The indoctrination theory was born from people being unable to accept that the ending was garbage though.
@@ElFreakinCid agree, we were promised that our actions would impact the outcome. Theory or no theory, it didn't. But without that poor design-choice. The theory was pretty darn good! It was a sarcastic joke, and people ran with it.
Now you just need to wait 25ish years until this gets recognised as an official source and DYKG have to do a video debunking it
Personally I just assume Ditto is one of the first pokemon that Mew created out of bacteria, which due to its unstable DNA caused it to evolve over time into every other pokemon we know today, and that the Ditto in the mansion were either brought in because of that connection or were the result of cloning Mew, and in the latter's case the reason there's no in-game documentation on this is because a lot of it was destroyed during Mewtwo's escape. I know people will tell me I'm wrong because the Pokemon fun fact channel said so but I don't really care tbh.
That works too
@@Girkirbythesecond It sounds like you say Mew is the creator (bacteria???) of all Pokémon/god, but that's kinda Arceus' role (even if it came way later), also I don't think it's older than prehistoric Pokémon

@@psychokinrazalon it has got me bullied before.

Please make a part 2
And also fact-checking the Eeveelutions revived into the legendary Johto Beasts

“Apparently that was good enough for the BBC” yeah
The ditto mew theory kind of reminds me of the "Zero killed everyone" theory for the mega man series. The fandom wants it to be true so badly that they flat out reject developer statements that debunk them.
It's not so much that people want it to be true so bad that they reject the developer statements, but the fact that fan theories are almost never created with the expectation that it's what the developer intended. Almost no fan theories are what the developers intended and we all know it. Most of us anyway. They're just for fun.
@@Yipper64 "things like this happen all the time but I can't think of a single example"
I know the Ditto theory isn't planned or deliberate but it's fun because it's a coincidence
They also failed to mention that mew was originally white, and not pink.
@@denverarnold6210
But Ditto and Mew aren't the same color or height??

I've always regarded the failed cone theory as a fun fan theory that would never be acknowledged as fact. It always came across as coincidental.
Yeah, this. People who take fan theories as fact are ruining the fun frankly

@@themachoechidnaugandarandy7583 As DYKG said before on Twitter, just because a franchise is supremely successful, doesn't mean the owners of said franchise are willing to funnel money into the development into the very thing that helped this franchise become popular. It's just a sad fact. People hate Masuda for a ton of reasons, which is sad. I'd love to see more debunk videos like these @Didyouknowgaming, more videos of a developer not actually saying what people blame them for.
@@themachoechidnaugandarandy7583 Masuda never said that they couldn't afford to hire more people. He just said that he likes to keep Game Freak low so that development cost doesn't balloon up, which happens the bigger the company gets. It is more cost effective to hire an outside studio. Furthermore Game Freak does not get all of the money from both the game and merch. That is not how business work. The money goes back into the Pokémon company and then gets split out between each section of the medium. Game Freak only get paid based on the sales of the main line Pokémon and that is it. Lmao. It's just pathetic.
That's not really a theory people think it's true, is it? It's just some fun copy/creepy pasta thing.
The work you all made to make this video is exceptional! Congrats! Despite having people that without any proof still believes in one or more of these 3 myths, your video will remain the best source about these myths. :)

There's other ways of debunking it beyond that...

Nah theyd never confirm it cause it would confirm that there was animal abuse.
