I played the other side and it was I should Coco. first song on deck was I like to know and my mind was blown. ps im canadian so the only bands that really crossed the pond was blur, oasis and pulp. so this was magical to me
I was 15 when Mary was released and I spent a couple of weeks trying to nail the Rhodes part so I could show off to my mates from school. We all went to see Kula Shaker at the Wolverhampton Civic and afterwards we ended up in a pub (totally underage drinking) and there was a piano there. All my mates were going "play Green Onions," but I had Mary up my sleeve! The landlord of the pub came over and I thought he was going to kick us out for being underage - he offered me a job to play piano every week on a sunday! He must've been a Supergrass fan also. Bloody love Supergrass. They always scratched an itch that I never knew was itchy...if you know what I mean? Thank you for a great video. It's always cool to witness someone get into it..especially when they turn the switch and do things you don't expect.
For all of Oasis's tedious proclamations about them being the next Beatles, it was Supergrass (and Blur) who really embodied the Fab Four's widescreen vision and open-ended approach to creating music. Alongside The Boo Radleys and the Super Furry Animals, Supergrass were the wonderful shining diamonds in the pigswill that was Britpop.
First off The Beatles were something of a miracle that have never truly been rivalled. They are unmatched albeit for The Beach Boys or rather Brian Wilson and furthermore; Britpop was not ''Pigswill'' There is and has always been good music, even Oasis wrote some good music.
"Moving" is an absolute gem! It is so beautiful I love to play it in the early hours just as the sun is dawning. And your'e right - it would make a great track for a movie montage.
I got lucky. I moved from Houston to Phoenix in 2000 to live with a friend that just got out of the Army. When I showed up he had two tickets to Pearl Jam/Supergrass like 2 days later. He had no idea Supergrass was in my top two bands at the time either. When he joined the Army we were both still into grunge, but I had switched to Radiohead and Supergrass in that time and he actually moved into Tool and some heavier stuff as well. Good times!
@@Phaleel Thats so funny i spent months on the foo fighters message boards telling them to tour with Supergrass when i got a call from a guy i worked with who got left holding the bag on a ticket to PJ/Supergrass in Detroit and offered it for free so I got to see them then and then a few years later took my son to see the Foos and Supergrass opened for them. AWESOME.
As an American Gen X who spent the late 90s in London, Supergrass has always been a favorite. Great to see the next generation still loving them! And your music theory knowledge is SuperImpressive!
Gaz Coombes, the singer and lead songwriter, is currently a solo artist and all of his solo albums are extremely good, with many different sounds represented
I can't believe I watched an hour of you listening to Supergrass, but I did. And U=I thoroughly enjoyed it! I have been a fan of Supergrass since their first album, but you really helped me hear them with new ears! Welcome to Supergrass Fandom!
Supergrass have been one of my favourite bands for a long time, one of the few bands from that 90s era in the UK, that were consistently good. Really worth checking out all their stuff (and Gaz Coombes solo stuff too). Enjoyed the video. :-)
They were a big part of the soundtrack of life in the 90’s and early 00’s. They got lost in the wave of rock / pop music that exploded out of the UK. For me Supergrass and Super Furry Animals made the most interesting and amazing music. They both had a run of albums that were just miles above the rest. In my humble opinion of course.
Tales of Endurance Parts 4, 5, and 6 is one of my favorite songs of all time. Driving from LA to Laughlin, along hwy 40 past the Joshua Trees at sunset while blasting this song...that is a VIBE
"I can't really predict, which is what makes it good." Amen. What I love about this band! And yes, heavy late Beatles, some early Pink Floyd influences
You'd be more accurate name-checking Early Cure, Buzzcocks and The Kinks rather than inaccurately saying the obvious. They're first album sounds nothing like The Beatles or Pink Floyd.
I've been listening Supergrass for a month and I'm obsessed with them. I think I will continue for a long, long time with his music. They have become my favorite bands, without a doubt.
In It For The Money is a wonderful album. On my top 50 hands down. The self titled album is an experience. The lush production, dreamy chords .. it’s everything.
It’s super enjoyable, watching you feel the way I remember feeling when I first heard this in the 90s. Very nostalgic vibe even back then. And it’s pretty impressive watching you really get it and feel it and understand it. I’ve been listening to these songs thousands of times, and it was nice to kind of go back and have you break it down to remember all the little parts that I’ve neglected to pay attention to since I first discovered them.
Supergrass are one of my fav's. They were pretty huge in the UK at their peak (mid-90's to mid 2000's) as you mentioned, its a shame they never broke America as they were definitely good enough. They're also fantastic live. Loved the video, keep it up!
I’ve been a huge fan here in the states since 95 when Coco came out. Over the next few albums they just got better & better. I can remember having to pay $30 to get the XRay record imported because they didn’t have a release date for the states yet. I did my best to get as many people into them as I could. An amazing band & for me the best to come out of the UK at that time. Far more interesting than Oasis & better songwriting than Radiohead. My opinion anyway. As a hardcore fan, this was a great watch
Longtime Supergrass fan here. I really enjoyed your descriptions of their chord progressions and melodies. This video “randomly” appeared on my feed, most due to the fact that I’ve been going back over concert footage of SuperGrass. I gotta tell’s a It’s was great to watched your learned responses to their music. A fellow musician turned me on to them years ago, and I think they are the greatest English band from that period. They balance sophistication and finesse with Rock’n power. I think their pieces are especially moving to other musicians. It was great watching your responses, I could totally relate.
Stumbled across this video today and glad to see someone else come across this band. Also, it's funny that you mention in "Moving" that it feels like it sounds like film music, as it's actually used at the very end of the British Comedy Film "East is East"
Thanks that was awesome. I remember how exciting it was listening to Supergrass when they came out, how surprising and enticing they were. Lovely to see someone with knowledge and skills listing for the first time.
I remember growing up listening to Supergrass, I got the second album day one and loved the first album. Music was so fun back then, Supergrass, Oasis, Blur, Elastica. I was lucky to see all those bands live. One band I'll recommend they're not Brit Pop but Power pop they were called Jellyfish And they had two albums "bellybutton" and "spiltmilk"
Fantastic video!! As a child of the 90s I know of Supergrass and liked the songs I'd heard (ie their hit songs), but never bothered to listen to their albums in full. I'm currently working through their entire body of work and wow... I totally underestimated this band...
Nice analysis. Not necessarily the 10 tracks I would have chosen but honestly, you can't go wrong with anything. Musically, they're easily one of the best bands to come out of the Brit Pop years. The Beatles influence is there, for sure, and the prog rock, too. Also outrageously good live. I wish I could hear them again for the first time.

your passion and appreciation of music is great to see. Supergrass were largely seen as a novelty act when they were much more than that. Road To Rouen is proof of that.
Watching you listen to them for the first time reminds me of the first times I listened to those songs. I think it’d be fun to hang out with you and listen to new cool music. Good video. Thanks.
Thank you for giving so much time and effort to a band that I rate so highly. Supergrass were very underrated. Another band of the era that were also underrated which should have more attention is Ocean Colour Scene. I recommend them as much as Supergrass. Epic reaction/review

It's cool seeing your expressions discovering SG haunting creations. It happened to me too each time they released something new. That's what music and creativity it's about, and this guys really worth each beat.
Your vid just drifted into my YT. As said many times previously, Supergrass are monstrously good. Both live and in the studio. It's really nice to see someone that appreciates them on a purely musical level, very rare.
This was so great. Most ‘reaction’ stuff is “I want someone to like the music I already like”, and I’m a sucker for that. I’m not Supergrass’s number one fan, but I like them. To have someone pull the songs apart a little (musically) is so interesting. To do this in real time and pretty much nail the key, mode and chords is something I’ve never seen before. When you picked out bits of melody you also picked out the feel too. Either the songs are so distinctive the melody delivers the feel, or you’ve picked up the vibe first time.
Very cool, that was a real nostagia trip, what a band Supergrass were, from seeing them in San Fran in the early 90s to catching up with them in Dublin a few years ago, their music still stands up, a great live band, Gaz Coombes latest album is also worth a spin, wonderfull stuff!
Wow thank you for this! I loved every minute of it. I especially loved how you described Moving … one part airy and cinematic , and then the chorus that is so grounded. Moving is my favorite Supergrass song and I can see why… I realize now it describes how I live out my life. I have these two modes 😂 Plus at the end the guitar sings the melody. Just so perfect
I love your reaction and appreciation of this band. There were a lot of non-singles in this list, which are some of their best songs. Check out a song called Run. Lots of cool harmonies and chord changes in that. Very cinematic, which you'll like.
She's So Loose has that beautiful Phrygian quality in the verse (which you nailed btw!). First time I heard it as a teen I simply had to learn that first chord. Turns out it's an easy one on guitar because it's just the standard F barre shape but with the barre lifted so the top two strings ring out open. This alone opened (pun intended) up a whole new world of chord voicings for me. Also learned so much from Supergrass about modulation and non-diatonic changes, but within a pop structure. Brilliant musicians. Beautiful People was always a favourite for me too because of how wild its changes are!
Your great, the Beatles comparisons are fine by me, the lads would be happy with that i reckon. More Supergrass please, skol! Watched them at the Moseley folk festival this year, they were flipping fantastic, Mary was the highlight for me, that Gaz Coombes overdriven guitar was Epic!!!!!!!!!!
Hey there Ixi from Ned in Spain. Thank you for diving deep into one of the finest and under appreciated bands, Supergrass. Gaz on guitar and main vox, Danny on drums, Mick on that fab bass and Gaz's brother Rob on all the keyboards. They all sing. Their method of composing was to combine different song ideas from Gaz and Mick which gives it that tricky "where is it going to next" ? vibe . Gaz and Danny had a band called Jennifers but it wasn't until Mick arrived that their songwriting clicked. Lucky me and the wife got to see them live from their first US tour onwards. Fabulous band. Try the song " Faraway " please.
@@Intapool Hey Mike, Ned from Spain and thank you for the corrections. Much as it stings, it´s better to know what´s what. You´re a pretty lucky guy being around for the beginning of this band, hearing them creating the songs and hanging out too. I hope I get a chance to talk to Danny some time. He was hanging around with Sam Williams I think in Deia, Malllorca which is up the hill from us, it would be cool to talk drums with him . Thanks again.
I thought I was the only one in the US who liked Supergrass or even knew who they were. It's nice to know that other people love them too. They are probably one of my favorite bands of all time. Definitely in my top 10.
Ive been a fan for 30yrs and i stil go to see Gaz Coombes solo. Gaz is basically my idol ❤ ive met him a few times now and hes so humble. Im hoping for a 30th anniversary tour for Supergrass x
Good list of tracks. I was holding out for both "Richard III" & "Sun Hits the Sky" though😥. The former our band plays as a cover. Bass player Mick Quinn provided great bass lines and back vocals. He's now a permanent member of another Oxford band and my absolute fav Shoegazers, Swervedriver. If you like interesting chord progressions, tension and off the wall tunings, you should give them a listen.
Coming here 2 years late to say their show at House of Blues Anaheim in August 2003 was 100% rad. Live, there was even more flexing of time between sections of songs, Danny Goffey was the secret sauce of the band, he was simultaneously unhinged and in complete control
i'm just a silly rock and roll guitar player type of musician, but i did go to music school and all that. so when i've listened to supergrass songs assuming "they're just doing rock and roll stuff, i got this!", i totally underestimated how armed they are with tricky modulations. their songwriting, and smart arrangement amongst a power trio, is so sneaky and sophisticated. i'd love the chance to see them live
Reminds me of a metal head I knew who had a bass gig where he had to learn Motown songs. He didn’t really know any to listen to. He said “It’s easy, just walking bass. I got this.” I started laughing and just told him he’d see. Two weeks later he came back to tell me he was very wrong and I was right.
Supergrasses Keyboardist, an Astrophysicist,, Brian May of Queen, an astrophysicist, and, Professor Brian Cox a Particle Physicist at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Manchester played with Keyboard with Rock Band Dare and Dance band D-Ream. Briskish Astrophysicists love to rock out it seems
Thank You for this Vid ... SuperGrass are one of the Most under rated Bands... They Were Mainstream with a few bits and Bobs BUT if You listen to all of their Albums Start to finish You realize the Class they Have .. And being Mostly Up beat is always a winner
I was learning music during the 90s and discovering all these extensions, modulation, tension, resolution and a long list of other terms. Supergrass caught my ear along with The Cardiacs and I still listen to them on my Beatles, Beach Boys random mix in the car and around the house. The last time I heard so many key changes in a song was either 'Penny Lane' or 'This Old World' Beach Boys...lol
Great band. Worthy of a revival of their own. I think you might also enjoy at least some *Cardiacs* from your reactions to the more "Cardiacs parts" of the Supergrass songs. (I don't know if they were influenced by them; it's just the way I tend to hear things these days. "How Cardiacs is it?" Monomania strikes again.) I"ll give you ten "replies", trying to use just covers "made with added loving care" so you can see if they're of any interest to you. (They're not an utterly obscure band, but they're not that well known, either.) It's all major and minor chords, but they don't always do as they're told.
*The Everso Closely Guarded Line* - cover by Paulo Sala. ruclips.net/video/DtB4tEAesgA/видео.html It's not all the way out to their weird side, but it's heading there. I'll just make the assumption that weirder is more potentially interesting to you.
*Jitterbug - junior is a* - a cappella cover by "the 180 G's" - or possibly just David Minnick all on his lonesome, simulating them. ruclips.net/video/bmxNKMO2kjA/видео.html (This one is weird. Even David says so in a reply to one of the comments. It apparently arrived one morning to wake Tim Smith up, and then he had no choice but to get out the paper and work on it till it was done - which lasted a solid 36 hours. The lyrics are from English as She is Spoke - a topic all of its own.)
*The Breakfast Line* - just on piano by Zachary Detrick (so unfortunately you miss out on the original violin and maybe cello, but then you get piano, so maybe you'd like that better). ruclips.net/video/LZqkdiWbgtw/видео.html If you ever did a live reaction (not likely to bring huge numbers of views, but also almost guaranteed to bring at least some views) the place to get the originals is probably their bandcamp site. (This is fun. Supergrass in the background, with commentary. I know these backwards. Don't need to listen - even if usually it's tempting to do so.) You might enjoy Zachary's other music. He has a pretty good band. Many of them are somehow involved with the Julliard school, so they know their stuff.
*Dirty Boy* - cover by Joe Parrish James (who would've been playing for Jethro Tull in the Ukraine when the Russians invaded and put a stop to that). ruclips.net/video/xx15Gr2nRME/видео.html It soars and soars and soars and soars and soars ... If you enjoy alternative interpretations of classical music, you might enjoy Joe's. He also has a folk metal band of his own, Albion. (His Rite of Spring "cover" has lots of approving comments on it, for starters).
*Anything I Can't Eat* - cover by Roman band *Sterbus* . Original is a fast-paced hard rocker/ maybe even a bit punk, but they do it with what sounds to me like a ukelele, but I can't be sure. ruclips.net/video/b-6U73cix2A/видео.html (Still nice and energetic).
You ask if the comparison yo the Beatles are favorable, In a recent interview when asked about how it felt to be signed at 17, Gaz said he would just so proud it was Parlophone, the Beatles labile the band the grew up on.,
Try British group called family late 60s 70s great musicians, Roger Chapman falsetto vocals, tracks to hear, my friend the sun, seasons, part of the load, the chase, weavers answer. Many others! You won't regret it! Can hear family in bits of supergrass!
if i could pick any band to play "lead" bass for any band out there itd be these guys. Id be hurtin the morning after. they attempt to make each song its own little trip to somewhere. Now Writing with them would be even better.

I really loved how you stopped trying replicate the Tales of endurance harmony and just enjoyed it
Very cool, that was a real nostagia trip, what a band Supergrass were, from seeing them in San Fran in the early 90s to catching up with them in Dublin a few years ago, their music still stands up, a great live band, Gaz Coombes latest album is also worth a spin, wonderfull stuff!
They played Paradiso in Amsterdam just before the corona crisis, boy they where on fire. One of the best live concerts in years. Brilliant band
The most under-rated british band, honestly superb live. My fave. This is really cool by the way.
Thanks for this reaction. I love Supergrass!
Thanks for this video, this is one of my favorite bands, you have a really nice way to dig in into the songs
Man I always forget how much I love She's So Loose every time I hear it what a gorgeous tune
It's Not Me gets the great chord sounds by the open E tuning on the guitar.
Hats off to the list maker-tough choice but well made-great job!!
Love me some Supergrass
Mick was the absolute glue of this band. Rhythm, counter melody and harmonies. I’m finally going to see them live in 6 months.
This is how I felt when I first discovered Gaz & Co. Love your reactions and your excellent ear, thanks.
I thought I was the only one in the US who liked Supergrass or even knew who they were. It's nice to know that other people love them too. They are probably one of my favorite bands of all time. Definitely in my top 10.
Great analysis, thank you for this. Okej of my favourite bands. Seen them once in Sheffield UK, after one of the latest albums..
I enjoyed this . Thanks . They gonna be your new favorite band .and moving is the best ever song about life on the road.
Amazing band thank you for this, real lack of supergrass song break downs on the internet.
Ive been a fan for 30yrs and i stil go to see Gaz Coombes solo. Gaz is basically my idol ❤ ive met him a few times now and hes so humble. Im hoping for a 30th anniversary tour for Supergrass x
I've been a fan for 25 years (Pumpin On Your Stereo in 1999!) and I didn't know Rob was an astrophysicist! Life on Other Planets, baby!
You have a cracking ear, good stuff
Late in the Day is such a beautiful melody. Supergrass at their most interesting and melodic.
one of the best bands in the indie scene...my first gig after arriving in the UK, Rock City, Nottingham, 2006
really love that they started you off on a deep cut from the debut
I enjoyed this video a lot as a fan from the band since the beginning. Thank you and I am glad you like them too.
This is really cool.
It's cool someone chose Supergrass. You have good fans
Nice video! Thanks👍
38:59 apposite lyrics!
Thank You for this Vid ... SuperGrass are one of the Most under rated Bands... They Were Mainstream with a few bits and Bobs BUT if You listen to all of their Albums Start to finish You realize the Class they Have .. And being Mostly Up beat is always a winner
This is a really great list, but maybe shoulda added "St. Petersburg" to the list. But they have so many good songs. Can't possibly pick just 10.
I was learning music during the 90s and discovering all these extensions, modulation, tension, resolution and a long list of other terms. Supergrass caught my ear along with The Cardiacs and I still listen to them on my Beatles, Beach Boys random mix in the car and around the house. The last time I heard so many key changes in a song was either 'Penny Lane' or 'This Old World' Beach Boys...lol
que bandaza! saludos desde Argentina
Great songs selection. Im so glad they got back together recently, really hoping they come to Argentina
St petersburg is a beautiful song.
I loved your reactions to Mary and Moving. I think Supergrass deserve to be known massively
Film score for”moving” watch “East is East”. Brilliant film. As are Supergrass, one of the best ❤
I love them great band .........saludos from Spain
Great band. Worthy of a revival of their own.
I think you might also enjoy at least some *Cardiacs* from your reactions to the more "Cardiacs parts" of the Supergrass songs. (I don't know if they were influenced by them; it's just the way I tend to hear things these days. "How Cardiacs is it?" Monomania strikes again.)
I"ll give you ten "replies", trying to use just covers "made with added loving care" so you can see if they're of any interest to you. (They're not an utterly obscure band, but they're not that well known, either.) It's all major and minor chords, but they don't always do as they're told.
*The Everso Closely Guarded Line* - cover by Paulo Sala. ruclips.net/video/DtB4tEAesgA/видео.html
It's not all the way out to their weird side, but it's heading there. I'll just make the assumption that weirder is more potentially interesting to you.
*Jitterbug - junior is a* - a cappella cover by "the 180 G's" - or possibly just David Minnick all on his lonesome, simulating them. ruclips.net/video/bmxNKMO2kjA/видео.html
(This one is weird. Even David says so in a reply to one of the comments. It apparently arrived one morning to wake Tim Smith up, and then he had no choice but to get out the paper and work on it till it was done - which lasted a solid 36 hours. The lyrics are from English as She is Spoke - a topic all of its own.)
*The Breakfast Line* - just on piano by Zachary Detrick (so unfortunately you miss out on the original violin and maybe cello, but then you get piano, so maybe you'd like that better). ruclips.net/video/LZqkdiWbgtw/видео.html
If you ever did a live reaction (not likely to bring huge numbers of views, but also almost guaranteed to bring at least some views) the place to get the originals is probably their bandcamp site.
(This is fun. Supergrass in the background, with commentary. I know these backwards. Don't need to listen - even if usually it's tempting to do so.)
You might enjoy Zachary's other music. He has a pretty good band. Many of them are somehow involved with the Julliard school, so they know their stuff.
*Dirty Boy* - cover by Joe Parrish James (who would've been playing for Jethro Tull in the Ukraine when the Russians invaded and put a stop to that). ruclips.net/video/xx15Gr2nRME/видео.html
It soars and soars and soars and soars and soars ...
The only band from the ‘90s that Instill listen to regularly
@57:32 another Supergrass fan was born
Pumping on your stereo & Richard the third are the best Supergrass songs IMO
Supergrass are cool ,and you're deffo my kind of girl 😊
I never got that turnaround right from late in the day
Amazing band and gaz coombes is a genuine genius ❤
You ask if the comparison yo the Beatles are favorable, In a recent interview when asked about how it felt to be signed at 17, Gaz said he would just so proud it was Parlophone, the Beatles labile the band the grew up on.,
Try British group called family late 60s 70s great musicians, Roger Chapman falsetto vocals, tracks to hear, my friend the sun, seasons, part of the load, the chase, weavers answer. Many others! You won't regret it! Can hear family in bits of supergrass!
Own most of their albums. Great band!
You need to check out The Super Furry Animals if you like Supergrass.
I'd love to hear you react to the album Queen of Denmark by John Grant. I think you'd really enjoy it 👍
This needs to happen!
Supergrass is such a fantastic band
if i could pick any band to play "lead" bass for any band out there itd be these guys. Id be hurtin the morning after. they attempt to make each song its own little trip to somewhere. Now Writing with them would be even better.
