Watching this for the first time in 2022 is so crazy. not even just dnd-wise, but to hear all the pop culture references from 6 years ago is just insane
Going through all this for the first time, I'd heard about D&D before, but watching this show has made me realise that it was the narrative experience that I've always been looking for from videogames.
I fucking can't, they're all being serious when listening to Percy's dramatic story and fucking Burt Reynolds is sitting there fiddling with some dice and trying to keep his mustache on XD
you know, from a story perspective, Percy being the one to be the most effected by these points of corruption makes a lot of sense, and I'm glad the dice rolls that way
For a while now I have been thinking that I liked Orion and Tiberius better than I do Sam and Scanlan. And this episode has firmly cemented that opinion into fact because of the urine scene. I found that disgusting and abhorrent.
Percy's explanation about the names, with the 6th one being for all the other people that he would have to hurt to get to the other 5 names was fucking poetic. Think Percy might just be my new favorite character.
The more I watch this series, the more Matt's dm style makes sense to me. He's super attentive, and spent huge amount of effort to getting the details down. Even his bloody cosplay are amazing.
Santa Australia yeah at this point I’m starting to wonder if he has some form of OCD that just prevents him from stopping working until things are perfect.
Id like to think I am as good, then I realize that I just do not have the voice acting skills, so all of my NPCs sound like either a gruff dwarf, a harried shopkeeper, or an over the top tavern wench. Thats all I can do.
@@MichaelNNY But that's okay. There is a lot more to DMing than doing character voices. Matt is a trained voice actor, his *job* is doing voices, so of course he brings that. The most important thing you can actually take from Matt's DMing style is his control of the table. He knows when things are getting out of hand, and how to calmly bring his players back in line. It has helped me immensely.
Everytime the party is in long RP discussions I look over to the DM to try to determine what he's thinking next. But all I get is the cold stare of Geralt of Rivia. It's got me like 3 times now and I'm only at the fog monster things
It's so awesome that Matt decided to go with Talesin's idea of forming a rebellion against the Briarwoods. That's the kind of DM who REALLY makes a D&D campaign into a special story.
I'm glad he didn't railroad them into doing whatever it was he intended. It's not that it couldn't have been good, but sometimes your players know the kind of story that would be the most fun to experience and Matt's got the skill as a DM/GM to make it work. How the hell he manages to remember as much as he can, and prepare as many sets and scenarios as he does, I don't know, but it's a marvel to see.
@@Lucifronz He definitely spends quite a lot of time preparing these things. I'm sure he loves it. He offers a number of potential paths and just further develops whichever one they choose or designs a completely new one if they choose to do something else. He talked about it at the end of campaign two and probably several other places I just haven't seen.
@@Lucifronz He only really railroads them when there's no real other option (i.e. the pit fight and hydra at vasselhiem when they had no fucking clue what to do, and the Roc cowscapade when Talesin was unable to make it and couldnt progress the briarwood story) And when he does he does it really well I mean this is the guy who builds up entire towns (see the temple discussion between matt and Talesin as an example) so he can go along with whatever the party wants.
As a DM, I love when my players come up with stuff like that because they always love when I go with it AND it's actually less work for me to prep adventures that way.

I'm watching this series for the very first time, and nothing has cemented my love for it more than Matthew Mercer opening the stream dressed as Geralt of Rivia. And also Travis -- I was DYING.
I think those are the moments that really wow me with how astonishingly good the cast are as actors. Yes, they have intense, emotional moments as their actual characters, I'm not at all knocking that, but the way they're all able to just fall into a character with consistent and believable traits whenever the situation calls for it is incredibly impressive. They're genuinely superb actors of both copious natural talent and highly polished, well concealed training in and dedication to their craft.
The way they modeled how to get help if you're a kid and someone's hurting you literally made me cry. Like Matt legit made the NPC tell Scanlon's kid that he could come ask him for help and he stood up to the "abusive dad" outright and told him to shape up. As a kid when someone was hurting me I thought I deserved it, but if I had seen something like this modeled I might have realized that I deserved better. I sincerely appreciate the balance of Scanlon's funny bit and and the seriousness of the issue of child abuse and it's one of the reasons I love this show so much! ❤️

@Lux Umbra can be taken one of two ways, but the latter is the funny one: he either agrees with them because he thinks they would get killed by the morning OR because he's afraid of them - wreaking havoc in general or just fucking up their teammates cause they're being idiots Could also be a lowkey sexist joke along the of "oh don't wanna piss off the wife" or "these crazy bitches will kill us if we disagree" but it's Taliesin so I choose to believe he's better than that
In all fairness, though it’s meta knowledge because only Tiberius did the research on vampires, wood stakes only take full effect when the vampire is within their resting place. If I remember correctly, at least.
Also before the banshee fight he put the stakes in his belt (the one to auto retrieve his daggers) and the stakes did not return. This means that tactically he has infinite daggers but limited stakes without actively retrieving them.
I am loving Percys storyline. Holy shit. It's so well done and so well executed. Matt is prepared for everything. A master DM definitely. And the characters, the constant conflict within the group regarding Percy's intentions and health, Scanlan being the best peasant boy possible xD, and the whole group dishing out damage left right and center. If the more recent episodes are as good as these I'm gonna be invested for a long time once again.
@@clayxros576 but there are off weight dice and the dice don't just roll themselves. Its too complex for us to calculate on the fly but there is a formula for how to roll dice exactly, depending on how you're holding them to roll the exact same thing every time in the same place. Thousands of variables that each have an effect which makes it nearly impossible to figure out, but if it obeys physics, you can calculate it. Maybe Laura rolls a certain way unconsciously when she believes it's going to be bad and holds it similarly as well leading to a statistical anomaly in her rolls depending on her feelings. Believing you know for certain that magic and curses(which don't have a scientific definition) don't exist seems way more ridiculous than someone who believes they could. RUNNING WATER, The rain prevents any undead intrusions.. Vampires at least, from affecting Vox Machina during there assaults on the noble houses! Well played Sir Matt. Well played
Nope, rain is *not* running water, especially not light rain like the one Matt described. Matt said that you would need particularly *strong* running water to damage vampires or even just to prevent them from regenerating. The example he used was "holding their heads into waterfalls". There is *no way* that the light to average rain Matt described could be anything like having your head directly stuck into a waterfall !

@Aidan Hall I mean will Wheaton's episodes are basically proof of that already
Id like to think I am as good, then I realize that I just do not have the voice acting skills, so all of my NPCs sound like either a gruff dwarf, a harried shopkeeper, or an over the top tavern wench. Thats all I can do.
@@MichaelNNY But that's okay. There is a lot more to DMing than doing character voices. Matt is a trained voice actor, his *job* is doing voices, so of course he brings that. It's so awesome that Matt decided to go with Talesin's idea of forming a rebellion against the Briarwoods. That's the kind of DM who REALLY makes a D&D campaign into a special story.
It takes a very confident and practiced storyteller to hand a player a pile of iron and a hammer and say "Your turn to lay the track."
@@Lucifronz He only really railroads them when there's no real other option (i.e. the pit fight and hydra at vasselhiem when they had no fucking clue what to do, and the Roc cowscapade when Talesin was unable to make it and couldnt progress the briarwood story) And when he does he does it really well
I mean this is the guy who builds up entire towns (see the temple discussion between matt and Talesin as an example) so he can go along with whatever the party wants.
As a DM, I love when my players come up with stuff like that because they always love when I go with it AND it's actually less work for me to prep adventures that way.

The entire cast is riveted by Sam Riegel's performance - they literally did not look away from his little-boy-in-the-tavern performance
I fucking love the but who typed "Percival Twizzlers KitKat Rollo's the third" in chat. I burst out laughing at work.

Sam in M9: "Why is every spell named after Caleb???!!!"

Matt: Make a Persuasion roll and a Deception Roll; back to back
Scanlan: Oh, jesus, ok...
Scanlan: *rolls*

Scanlan: Okay, persuasion, *39*
Matt: 0_0
Matt's face to Sam's extremely high roll is the best face he has made on this series lol
"I'm agreeing with the women because I want to live to see the morning", wise words, Percival, wise words
Indeed, truly wise.
Very wise.
This ep is always a little cringey to me and that line saves the whole thing. Smart man Percival.
@Lux Umbra can be taken one of two ways, but the latter is the funny one: he either agrees with them because he thinks they would get killed by the morning OR because he's afraid of them - wreaking havoc in general or just fucking up their teammates cause they're being idiots
Could also be a lowkey sexist joke along the of "oh don't wanna piss off the wife" or "these crazy bitches will kill us if we disagree" but it's Taliesin so I choose to believe he's better than that
@@alhemičarka that's not sexist, that's just fact. Women can be overly sensitive and dramatic. 🤷♂️but I'm a straight white male, so what do I know.
"First off you gotta treat your boy better." That had me losing it.
Omg I just watch this episode I was crying so much from laughing.
I love how vax used stakes against a banshee but now that they're fighting actual vampires he just uses his daggers.
In all fairness, though it’s meta knowledge because only Tiberius did the research on vampires, wood stakes only take full effect when the vampire is within their resting place.
If I remember correctly, at least.
@@b.r.papercuts3761 yeah, I just thought it was funny.
@@b.r.papercuts3761 They already mentioned that Tibs told the group what he found out.
Also his daggers are magic and wooden stakes not so much!
Also before the banshee fight he put the stakes in his belt (the one to auto retrieve his daggers) and the stakes did not return. This means that tactically he has infinite daggers but limited stakes without actively retrieving them.
I think Matt's costume perfectly illustrates why he is one of the greatest DMs in the world.
Scanlan *is* the best at being a peasant boy ^_^
If you haven't seen the latest episode, Scanlan was in top form, both in combat and RPing.

OoSacrificaLoO Percy is doing excellent roleplaying too. He’s clearly a veteran player. This storyline feels so personal.
Commander Shepherd I'm loving it so far. I am very excited for Grog's personal story.
57:56 Taliesin: "The butt flap of my soul is down. I'm well-dressed at the moment." (I love him SOOOOO much!)
Laura rolls another 1 and throws the dice away. "That's the one Will gave me".
Liam rolls eyes *well of course it's cursed then!*
No such thing as magic or curses in the real world.....but....
I mean, you get close enough to a black hole and the things that happen would meet the average persons idea of what magic is.
@@clayxros576 you cant really believe that can you? Have you seen Wil Wheaton roll?

I maintain such things dont exist.
But I also cannot explain that
Got a friend who has a "curse" like that, weird to watch him roll, and lord help you if he touches you, he can hand it off for the day if he wants
The bit with Vax and Scanlan in the tavern was phenomenal
The look on the entire cast's face when they learned that Percy's sister is alive, so priceless! This cast is a true team and a loving family. So glad the previous tension is gone!
i was in class when i got to that part, it was so hard to hide my excitement when they said that (i knew that, of course, i just loved everyone’s excitement)
“I’ve moved on from Scanlan and I’ve cut my hair as a sign of change” damn Travis gets women

Taliesin is mindboggling. When he coughs I don't know anymore if it's real cough or him playing his corruption.
I'm still waiting for the day when their five minute breaks only last five minutes.
The shortest on record is 8 minutes
or Matt just gives up and says 10 minutes
Didn't they once say they were going into a 5 minute break, and then realize their time was off and they could continue? If I'm remembering that correctly, it may be the closest we'll ever get...
Or, and here's a crazy thought, they could edit out the breaks before uploading episodes.

Seeing how much Taliesin gets into being Percy is genuinely heartwarming. You can feel how attached he is to the character 😭
"The butt flap of my soul is down."
I... have never heard those words used side by side like that. It's unnerving.
Also it's really hard to take Grog seriously when Travis is in a dress with a low bodice.
which is fine cuz he doesn't seem to want to be taken seriously too much
If you're offered the choice between a barbarian pulling your arms off & his pulling your arms off in drag, is either of those options less terrifying than the other?
@@GeorgieChaos yes, actually. I'll take drag. It's slightly distracting from my demise.
Travis was actually a surprisingly appealing barmaid.

I thought some of the Critters were also Browncoats...well played.
Ok first when does this happen?!
Secondly, didnt taliesin make a firefly reference in the last episode?
The Browncoat in my heart says. You can't take the sky from me.
This show is a literal goldmine of entertainment and the day I catch up with the Twitch live stream I'll be a sad fraggle. Cause now I'm basically watching every episode back to back as if I'm binge watching a Netflix show and soon it'll be only 1 episode a week.
axeman515 what's your favorite foreshadowing moment?
This sad fraggle, figures if he can watch 2 episodes a day, I still have about 2 months before I am caught up. And that is skipping a lot of stuff I would normally watch on tv etc...
You say foreshadowing, I say "said them and realized how fucking awesome it was and wrote them into the story." Not to take away from Matt's skill, cause he's a creative mastermind
Darren Kalkwarf I've literally not slept in about 6 days watching critical role straight non stop, I'm gonna be so sad when i only get an episode a week
Michael Ashwell Started watching this 2 weeks back. I've got about 85 episodes left. I'm gonna take my sweet time watching 1 or 2 a day. I love this too much to let it end so quickly.
Drinking game: take a shot every time Percy covers his face in anguish when revealing exposition
By drinking game did you mean "fun ways to get alcohol poisoning"? Lol
No thanks, I'd like to live.

my favourite will always be when tiberius contacts his father about using the draconian army and theres a message in chat that says 'dear son --- no'
That RPing scene with child-scanlan and dad-vax in the bar was absolutely freaking hilarious.
I'm watching it at 3am and trying to be silent to not wake anyone up, needless to say i failed my stealth roll and laughed quite loudly
This is really funny in retrospect, since Liam is now playing a father figure to Sam's current character.

RUNNING WATER, The rain prevents any undead intrusions.. Vampires at least, from affecting Vox Machina during there assaults on the noble houses! Well played Sir Matt. Well played
You just blew my mind.
#catchingup
Nope, rain is *not* running water, especially not light rain like the one Matt described.
Matt said that you would need particularly *strong* running water to damage vampires or even just to prevent them from regenerating. The example he used was "holding their heads into waterfalls".
There is *no way* that the light to average rain Matt described could be anything like having your head directly stuck into a waterfall !
Nr4747 To damage sure. But I assume even light rain would be some sort of detriment to them. Maybe not like damage but disadvantage could happen.
Nr4747 Matt literally counted a piss spray as running water. I doubt that he is very big on stringent rule following.
