Hate to sour the mood, but I really take objection to this notion that you can "beat cancer". It gives the false sense that you can actively do something to defeat it. You can't.
You can survive it. But you can't beat it.

I am so thrilled Sam's wife was there and stayed for the whole show and enjoyed it. That's the icing on the cake of Sam's amazing return and first and foremost, a testament to how much we all love Sam and we are so happy he's on the mend. Health will always be the priority and what he went thru is tough and terrifying. It bursts my heart to know he has a super powered support system like he does with his friend circle and his loved ones but also an entire community at his back. That's what it's about.
I have nothing but admiration for Sam performing as smoothly and effortlessly as he did at the Greek despite being nervous and in pain; we all are cheering you on during your recovery Sam!

Man, rewatching that episode of the battle with Otohan and FCG's sacrifice is going to hit so much harder knowing that they knew by then that Sam was sick and going in for surgery. So happy to see him back and on the mend!

Makes the rest of the casts reaction hit different. Like they were all really upset for previous deaths but it had a weird vibe this time that now makes a lot more sense
Matt's reaction makes perfect sense now. Every player who has considered having their character either leave the party or sacrifice themselves have talked to Matt first so he if it ever does happen his reactions aren't of complete shock and surprise. Sam talking with Matt but still not knowing if or when Sam would do it then it lining up perfectely with his surgery was a lot of compounding stakes.
I was late on the campaign and so I watched the video about Sam's recovery before getting to that scene. I'm very sensitive by nature but this took everything out of me. I think no other fictional death has impacted me the way FCG's death did 🥲

Sam's strength, resilience, and levity is beautiful to see. He's an inspiration to me, as a fellow survivor. He's regaining his weight, his smile is bright, his eyes are shining again, and you can see those bags are in the middle of receeeding. He's recovering beautifully, and he's being so fucking strong. Absolutely love it.
Also, shout out to his bestest friends. This is what support and love looks like. Whenever he starts to spiral or think of the cancer again, they distract him or change the subject. I almost never wanna dwell or stay on the topic of my cancer, but sometimes it just happens and it dominates your mind until you have a little help from those angels in our lives.

Laudna’s backstory is cool because we know of the event. Her trying to shame Orym for using Otohan’s sword that one time was absurd as fuck. She was like you are using the weapon that killed several of us… yet, she’s using the powers of the one who murdered her and her entire family… like wtf?

Gotta say it, 4-sided dive is possibly my favorite thing to listen to while making Homebrew creations or just work while doing anything. Also, thank you god for bringing back Sam!
1:17:34 Matt's "...I don't..." in answer to "how do you keep track of all this for so long?" is perfect. That's the secret, the DM has some general ideas, but it always comes down to laying the tracks just three steps ahead of the coming train 😅
There is a technique that many many DMs employ but isn't always done with full understanding of exactly how it works. Its simple: you seed details into the world, just add little things, descriptions, symbolism, just anything that adds flavor and makes the game interesting. Then, as you go along, these details catch the eyes and interest of the players. Using these details you can build upon what interests the players, but there's an even more subtle and sneaky move that works wonders.
As the story develops you can pluck from all of these details at will, using any of them you like to create twists and turns, to surprise the players, and what does that look like? From the perspective of the players it looks like you planned it all along, like you set things up from that very first little "seed" reveal where you started putting those details in play. A properly handled detail can turn into the mother of all plot twists, and leave your players awestruck.
@@blugobln85 oh absolutely, I've always done this in my campaigns. You need to have attentive players interested in the lore though, otherwise your plot twist will go unnoticed or confuse everyone.

I actually just spotted Kilroy in a video about Ukrainian soldiers, on a "US-Ukraine solidarity" poster. So it seems to still be alive at least in some military circles.

I've been a critter since day one. Played D&D since 1991. I've always wanted to be on the show and play a halfling Barbarian fighter. I'm 6'8". 335lbs. I would love to play! Just saying....nudge..nudge..hint..hint..wink...wink...!!!
@XinnOmega I am also a larger guy and I am playing just that! It is insanely fun to be honest. To be fair my DM thinks size restrictions on large weapons is stupid and should rather be tied to strength instead - which I appreciate because it would've been less fun

I’m sure others have said this before, but listening to Matt makes me imagine that this is what Tolkien would have done had D&D been around in the 1920s and 30s. There’s the “main campaign” of dealing with this ring, but behind all of that, there’s an entire world were thousands of years of history and events have taken place. I can’t wait for some future date when Matt publishes his notes in his version of The Silmarillion!

As critters can we agree next time a cast member takes a break for more than a session we stop HOUNDING the chats and being aggressively invasive about it? Because I noticed it was all people brought up - missing him was absolutely valid, but omg the way they disregarded his privacy or potential NEED for a break with endless demands for him. Sometimes difficult things happen, and in this case Sam had to go through something legitimately terrifying.
I'm sure Sam isn't phased, he might even be touched but it would have absolutely stressed the team out; production specifically, and everyone in charge of social stuff. I'm so glad he's back and healthy, but we need to be more mindful of how we treat these people and their privacy when they need it.

I’m honestly hoping that Sam updating us on his health journey would remind people that CR are people first and fans could tone down the complaints about the “big break” from the main campaign. Even if they aren’t all dealing with heavy life stuff they all deserve a break. PLUS we’re about to get some awesome Aeor lore, idk why people would be upset about that.
Can Critters all agree? Are... are you new? No, no they can't. Are people going stop worrying or being curious when a cast member goes MIA? No, obviously not. Are Critters going to just hold their breath when there is little or no communication from those at CR about a subject, any subject? No. Are people, and I'm talking about people here, human people, are human people going to set aside their entitlement? No, clearly not. Are people like you going to stop announcing their righteous outrage in an attempt to get a virtual pat on the back? No... duh. Am I going to stop being annoyed at, well... everyone? NO. Travis underestimates himself. I have rarely cried harder than when Cerrit interacted with his kids in EXU: Calamity. His last conversation with them had me feeling as though my heart were laying on the floor.
Travis is SO GOOD. He doesn't say as much as the other players, but when he does, he lays down some pure gold.

If I can get Matt to realize one thing is that although for him his npc's may feel like him and he felt awkward about doing the HDYWTDT himself, for me and I'm sure the audience his npc's mostly genuinely feel like other people. So no worries there! But I understand him wishing the final blow on his players, especially on a live show.

For Dani: "Kilroy was here." Originator was: U.S Navy welding and riveting inspector, James J. Kilroy when the soldiers saw it all over the ships during transport to D-Day they found it hilarious and started drawing it everywhere themselves. Kilroy's graffiti figure and the eponymous "Kilroy was Here" could subsequently be found in places across half the battlefields in WW2 Europe.

Ngl Matt picking fate for that question was a very pleasant surprise. I forgot that kiritsugu was his favorite character he voiced.
As someone with cancer, I love making jokes like the "you can't say no to me, I have cancer" jokes. My friend before he lost his fight to cancer would do that with me. Sometimes we'd do it to each other. I also just saw the Hank Green special on Dropout and he talks about doing that and had cancer has some good sides (but obviously the negatives far outweigh it).
Its actually funny Matt mentions the Fate series. I had a friend a long while back who ran a custom campaign with the Fate series as the basis. He had us pick servant types then classes and we worked on our backstories with picking actual historical figures, myth, lore, etc. I ended up picking a Barbarian Berserker who had the souls of his 10 Berserk vanguard inside of it that transitioned classes from Berserker to one of the more niche ones in the mobile game. Point is, it was amazing! defeated servants were used like magic items and the harness that Bell's Hells has, absorbing their powers and gaining aspects of them, randomly of course. Ended up becoming a werewolf too lol. I digress! I hope some day matt can run a Fate one shot!
If I was one of the archmages of Aeor, my project would have been, cracking healing magic and make it accessible for mages. There must be a way, bards and druids can do it too and they don’t follow a deity.
I love that the Naruverse (Fate series) lives rent-free in Matt's head since he voiced Kiritsugu over 10 years ago in Fate/Zero. Honestly the magic system and world building of the Fate series is actually quite good.

Sometimes it feels like Sam is a paragon of "the show must go on". Even when said "show" turned out to be a fight for his life. Here's to many more years of strength and hilarity and holding so tightly to our heartstrings as you always have, Sam!

Honestly I hadn't really thought about it until it hit me just now.
During FCG's last action, I sorta thought the casts reaction was a little 'overdramatic' even for these very immersed player. But now with the context of Sam's Illness... they were not just reacting to FCG's death, but the fact that Sam would be leaving them for a good while, if he'd even return to the table at all.
All of which is to say we're all so happy that it was FCG and not Sam, that went out in a blaze of glory. And that he did in fact return to us in one piece.

I missed this thankfully ,why people have to ruin it for others I have no idea.
I'd like to think they were just hungry for lore and excited about Sam being back rather than having a desire to ruin anything for anyone.
That's why I do not interact with this fanbase at all, at most I look into the top comments of the RUclips vid sometimes. People have become way too attached and parasocial with this show, that's what mostly drives such actions.

Matt, I had the same thing happen to me in Seattle. I kept all my D&D books in a laptop bag, with 4 hand painted figures, and about $400 worth of dice(fancy stuff, Opalite, Black Obsidian, etc). And I have the same though. Someone thought it was a laptop. Opened it and saw all my secret nerd tools, and just tossed it, completely unaware of the emotional trauma they had inflicted.
Oh wow, I didn't realize how rough Sam was feeling at the live show.
I know that moving on is incredibly important. Getting back to living life just normal without thinking about what went wrong. Which will probably take some time if you have trouble speaking.
But before Sam does so, let me say: We love you man! You are the best and you deserve nothing but the best. So give fate the finger and do what you do best: Make fun ot if!

ok, funny story about Short Circuit! We literally did that. "hey this is a movie we loved, lets show the kids!" It's not great guys! LOL but my son, who was in 1st or 2nd grade, he got in trouble for re-creating a scene. In the scene, the robot shoots a bad guy on the belt buckle, and his pants fall down, and it's all hilarious and all. So much so that my son did the scene at school …. and .. we got a call from the teacher. To be fair, she was AWFUL and made a HUGE deal about it. We, on the other hand, knowing our son, had a good laugh, and made sure to inform him that maybe keeping clothes on, and just explaining scenes like that going forward would be better. He's nearly 21 one, and doing just fine, so no harm done LOL!!
I love that Sam was like 'yeah I was blue balling the whole campaign' when FCG was canonically the first member of BH to get any action. If it isn't maximum horny, it doesn't count. I'm so happy he's back, and I hope he's having a wonderful day.
I also just clocked the episode title and I really hope that's a Little Shop Of Horrors reference, because I love it.
