    I normally am not a fan of 3" or under blades, but for whatever reason, I do really like my Sage 5 lw. I'm not a Para 3 fan. I much prefer the Sage series, or even the Native 5 if I want or need a 3" blade.
    Interesting choices. Your reasoning is sold regardless of whether everyone agrees or not. We all have different needs and tastes in knives, so whatever works is never a wrong choice. I enjoyed the video! It got me to look at some of the knives in a different light, which is a good thing imo. Thanks for doing it brother!

      Thanks for the great comment man. Yeah, I was VERY close to including the Native 5 in this list, it's a highly versatile EDC option. You hit the nail on the head, the vast array of opinions and preferences is what makes this hobby so fun. Love hearing why folks like what they do. I may make this an annual vid and see if my own choices and preferences change. Thanks for the support!

      @@mildmannerededc They may just change. I know my tastes have certainly changed in the last 4 or 5 years, and even since the last 1 or 2. I used to not like tantos at all. Didn't even have one in my collection until about a year or so ago, and now I have 3 or 4, mostly Twosuns because they do them well imo, but I also grabbed the Civivi Brazen tanto, and I like it quite a bit. As odd as it may sound, I thing change is the only real constant in this hobby.

    Great list! One criticism though. I’m not usually interested in smaller blades but Spyderco’s best slicer is the Chapparal. It is superbly thin and is a laser beam through everything. It’s also a tremendous value.

    • @mildmannerededc
      @mildmannerededc  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching man! Yeah the Chapp is definitely an excellent slicer and agree on the value. My only issue is it's too small be to the kind of "slicing beast" I had in mind, cutting edge is barely over 2 in, but it could easily be on a Top 5 of Spydercos. Native 5 also was a tough one to leave off.

    1) travel - Spyderco Roadie;

    When I first became interested in collecting knives, I had no interest in Spyderco. But something happened ( don’t know what it was ) and then I bought PM 2, Para 3 Lightweight, Dragonfly 2, Delica 4, Smock, Amalgum, Shaman, Tenacious and lastly the Sage 5 Lightweight - which is now my favorite Spyderco due to its dimensions, weight, leaf blade shape & compression lock and it fits my hand like a glove - what a great knife!!

    My first Spyderco was one of the original Police models with a stainless steel handle. I bought it back in the 80s. I lost it on a camping trip, and my second Spyderco was a Delica 1. I went through a couple of Delicas over the year, as I really liked the design. Along the way, I tried a couple of other Spyderco designs, but alway went back to the Delica. Finally, a couple of years ago, I bought my first Para 2 and fell in love with it. The ergonomics of the knife just really fits my hand. 👍

    I love Spyderco's, an usually the larger, my favorite being the Amalgam, It was made for me, fits my hand like it was customized for me personally. The Police, the Resilience, are a couple other favorites, but nothing tops the Amalgam, an after 30 minutes of playing with it you have no problems with the compression lock an flipper tab, another two of my favorite things about them.

    I’m fully with you on the Sage 5....particularly the Sage 5 lw. I think it gets overlooked because of its “plainness”. It’s probably the most vanilla compression spyderco out there....but mine is just so friggin good. It feels unbelievably solid to operate, the tolerances are spot on and it’s comfortable. I just need to get some micarta scales on it at some point. That’s the only thing it’s “missing”...the single company who puts them out has been out of stock for what feels like forever...

      there are always aftermarket pocket clips that facilitate a deeper carry option for the Para3. most notably Lynch NW (northwest) and MXG brands. I have experience with the Lynch NW clip on a Delica 4 and it's very nice and has a lifetime guarantee.

    I just discovered your channel today by watching this video of yours about the "Top Five Spyderco knives: For Any Occasion. I thought that your list was incredibly well thought out and I absolutely agreed with your entire list especially the Spyderco Caribbean being your number one pick. I love the Spyderco Caribbean because it's a knife that I always wanted Spyderco to create!!! The Spyderco Caribbean is between the size of the Tenacious and Resilience, and it also has the same angled ricasso as the Ambitious, Tenacious, and Resilience where the angled ricasso basically touches the level of the scales. This angled ricasso and the fact that the Spyderco Ambitious, Tenacious, and Resilience were liner lock knives made them all in my opinion dangerous finger guillotines. But with the Spyderco Caribbean, they actually made a knife with this same dangerous angled ricasso safe by making it a compression lock so you wouldn't have to put your fingers in front of the blade to disengage its locking mechanism!!! The blade and liners of the Caribbean are made of LC200N and the pocket clip and screws are titanium so the Spyderco Caribbean is virtually rustproof!!! My only nitpick with the Spyderco Caribbean is that the lanyard hole on it is a bit small, while the lanyard hole on the Paramilitary 3 is quite huge. The one knife that you would actually want to have a giant lanyard hole on is the Spyderco Caribbean because it's meant to be used on a boat that's on a lake or in the ocean or if you're near a body of water. Therefore you would want to be able to use thick 550 paracord to securely attach the knife to your wrist so you wouldn't drop it over the side of a boat into the water losing it forever. As far as the bumblebee black and yellow-colored scales are concerned, I don't mind their look because it's purposely designed to be high vis so if you drop the Caribbean in shallow waters of a pond or swamp you would be able to easily see it in mucky/muddy areas.

    Would not be my choices but the video and your argumentation was nice to listen to.
    The Caribbean! A great knife! Had one with me for about 2.5 months on a daily basis. But not as "rust resistant" as you can get. The Pacific Salt is much better in that category.
    The Caribbean has SS liners, stop/guide pins, spacers and screws...all those parts rust. The liners are more rust resistant than the rest but they do also rust. 10 days in and around salt water. I snagged the pocket clip on mine, while taking my t-shirt off, and it got bend pretty bad.
    Now the Pacific Salt(H1)...i carried for one month in and around salt water.... nothing rusted. Not even the spring or...
    That Capara doe....!
    Good video!

    Have you ever had a Smock? I think it's better for me in general EDC stuff. Hard to shake a stick at a Para 2, Manix 2 or a Shaman too. How bought the Rock Lobster in M4 for hard use? I bet that would do well. I love the Caribbean and the Kapara. Use both those knives in my kitchen almost everyday. Just curious is the CF version of the Kapara smooth? Like has little to no texture? My favorite Spyderco is the Para 3. I think that it does everything that I need an EDC knife to do. Plus it’s a great value for a USA made knife. The price has gone up since they moved to S45VN steel. The knife is a great size. Plus I love the fact that you can get the knife in different steels, and handle materials. I own more Spyderco’s than any other brand of knife. Spyderco gives you more for your money.
    I feel that Benchmade is out of touch when it comes to pricing. Plus they love plastic to much. G10 is the “cheapest “ handle material I want on a knife.

    I have small/medium hands and my top five: 1. Dragonfly. I like the backlock and it's small size can go anywhere. 2. Meerkat. Great for office work cutting straps and paper. 3. Native 5. Best ergonomic and fits nice in the hand. 4. Lil Native. The classy EDC when I'm out and about. 5. Delica 4. The go to when the job gets messy. As for scales, I really like the feel and lightness of FRN. On my wish list: techno 2

    My favorite is the Native 5 LW.. call me old fashion but I love the strength of lock backs and that strong snap sound. I always slow roll open my knives anyways.. plus I am a DLC guy. I agree the Sage 5 is nice. I like the spyderco models without the hump in the blade, that’s why I never took to the PM2 / Para 3 / Delica.

      Oh that Watu is one crazy slicey knife! I didn't end up keeping it because I didn't think it was suited well for the compression lock, but that blade!! I've had a couple Smocks, I want to love that knife (button lock, hollow grind, fidgety as all get out), but it's the darn ergos, for me anyway. Both though are excellent options from Spyderco, I agree. Thanks very much for checking out the vid and for the thoughtful comment!

    I really enjoyed the video and I can only say that those are some excellent choices. But since you asked - these would be my top 5:
    1) Urban - I would pick it too, pity that it seemed to be standing in the shadow of UKPK which is available in 3 steels and is even lighter. But Urban in Spy27/LC200N/S90V or similar would make me pick one immediately. And please, not black.
    2) Sage 5 - I have not tried yet and optically I prefer Para 3 LW, but many praise how ergonomic the Sage 5 is. I need to try one out. At the moment I have Brouwer to cover (1) and (2). I absolutely love it, only wish the blade was a bit thinner. But it is super smooth and sits perfectly in hand. Yes I have MXG clip on it. SpyOpera could be another contender, though the pinned construction feels weird a bit. The blade is thin and slicy (the grind is a bit hollow)
    3)Ikuchi - would not be my pick. I agree that Spyderco does not have anything closer to office carry, but to me it is too long and too pointy. I would probably go with something like Mnandi, ZT 0235, Quite Carry iQ, etc.
    4) Kapara - I can't get over that skinny blade. Spyderco does not really make dedicated slicers, I guess I would just pick some bigger one that I like ... I do my own regrind. But Kapara has the best made finger choil - I was wishing for something like that. Maybe I just need to get my hands on one to try it out. 3D shaped carbon scales and Taichung production with a compression lock - there is a lot of value there. GB2 is a great slicer, though not really great for kitchen use.
    5)Caribbean - the drop point version is on my short list actiually. But I am just having a complete meltdown over Schempp Bowie (just try to get your hands on one) so I will most likely get that one. I know that Caribbean (or even Stretch or PM2) makes more sense, but I am just hooked on the Schempp Bowie. If I find the excuse (and budget), then I will get the Caribbean. I love the looks and design.
    Right now (4) and (5) is covered by a thinly reground (not my work) Cold Steel American Lawman in XHP. It cuts like a dream, but I may need to reshape the handle if I decide to keep it.
    And I would even add one more category - workshop knife. Here I need a blade with not too much belly, acute tip and good edge retention. Easy deployment.
    6)Manix/Endela/Native Chief. I got the Native Chief in Rex 45, but it feels too long (otherwise a fantastic knife). Manix has the perfect shape, but the handle of LW did not fit my hand. Endela in k390 would work too, just don't love the shape. I am even thinking of Para 3 or PM in Maxamet. I am still on the search. I may do a blade chop on the Native Chief if I won't find a different knife that would suit me better.
    So, there you go. Long video yields long comments :p

    • @mildmannerededc
      @mildmannerededc  3 года назад +1

      Awesome!! Great comments. You mentioned a couple that I had on and off the list before I settled on this 5. The GB2 is an excellent slicer and ergos are great, action can be weird. The SpyOpera was my favorite new Spyderco last year and I still love it. I need to just buy a Lawman, nobody ever says anything bad about it. Thanks for the thoughtful discussion and for checking out the vid.

    • @matusknives
      @matusknives 3 года назад

      @@mildmannerededc There is one 'bad' thing about the (2nd hand) Lawman I have - because the way the lock is made (it requires a lot more travel at the lock-face than a regular back-lock, that forces the lock pivot further back and thus makes is hard to depress the lock bar, because you have very little leverage. So for me the knife is one-hand-opening, but two-hand-closing. But the knife was sandblasted (no black parts left) what might have influenced the action.

    I just picked up the Rock Jumper in VG10 to try out, and I like it so much, I gotta get one in a premium steel now, and get some custom scales for it. My fav Spyderco model is the Stretch 2, I have a standard VG10 model, and the K390 model with a straight spine. I need to get one in G10 scales next. I also love the Yojimbo 2 as well, I carry it sometimes.

    I own too many Spyderco's, though (Or not enough).
    I have a Dragonfly (s30v version), Delica (SUS 310/V-toku 2 version), Chaparral (Rafir Noble), Sliverax, Panchenko Dog Tag (blue and green one), Positron (orange G10), Roadie, and the Meerkat.
    I want to like the compression lock, but it's annoying to access if you're left-handed. It basically makes the knife a 2-handed closer.
