Force Combat is a Star Wara fighting game made by a fan! Releasing the first build in late 2019, LastJawa has been developing this love letter to the series as a one-man army with input from the community and fans alike! Great review! I appreciate the positive comments as well as the criticism. I agree for commercial projects, generative AI has no place. However, as a one man team on a non-commercial project, I have to constantly prioritize where my time and resources are spent, especially when the constant refrain from people is "Jawa do you have a release date?" or "Great.... but when can we play this game!!" LOL As to the other issues, there are always things that get left on the table or just forgotten about when putting together something like this. I had to rework many of the characters, as on first pass they were just not fun or did not work the way they should. The Dark trooper could certainly be reworked. Thanks!

I just discovered this project on a whim and I gotta say i'm impressed. One "small" request, for Palpatine, you do need to add his Corkscrew spinning attack to his move list XD
Man, I love your game, I love everything, but only one thing, playing it with a Joystick is cancerous, it never happened to me that it was more comfortable to play a fighting game with the keyboard, it's super uncomfortable, is this something you're considering in the future? Otherwise the game is very good, although it needs to polish things like hands and animations, it is already better than several official Star Wars games
This looks so wildly better than the last build I saw. I hope LastJawa spends the rest of their time polishing up what is already here and making the animation and combat feel more natural rather than continuing to creep more characters and features in there. Just make what you have feel complete and I'll be satisfied at this point. Thanks for the in depth look!
I def want to see even more overall improvements, but I also hope we get more characters as well!! There's still a bunch people want to see, for example still no major characters from Star Wars Rebels just yet!! Though I do know a big request is The Ronin from Star Wars Visions!
This FREE fan game having 42 characters in a beta shows that fighting game publishers are just greedy for barely having any characters in the base game
tbf those games have polished animations that dont look like complete shit except mortal kombat the only decent animation they have theyve been reusing for the past 10 years

Games like SF6 having a limited roster is pretty deliberate. I like force combat a lot but balancing a roster this large is very difficult and this game shows that

the animations themselves look good it's just they don't like flow into one another so it looks like an animation starts the moment the other ends which makes it jank looking
Nice to see long term analysis on this fan-game. There was a great analysis on EA battlefront 2 and in the section with regards to hero combat/ lightsaber combat, the case was made that that mode could make its own game ignoring the infantry and vehicle combat and I agree. Its a shame that the star wars rights holders don't take advantage of good ideas. Star wars is such an expansive universe. Happy may the fourth.

This is incredible. This is a fan game and he's not selling it so using AI art for a ONE MAN project is totally fine by me. You suggested him taking art from other star wars projects. Don't get how that's better not to mention the price tag he'd have to pay for those images and voices if he did.
I'm glad you like it! Jawa did a great job! And to explain: since this is a fangame, using previously made materials from past projects can be done for free since its not being sold for money. A majority of the character voice clips save for Revan are all from past Star Wars games or isolated from the movies or shows. Three characters however have no voice clips to isolate. So, I figured a good alternative to AI is to put out a casting call for Young VAs to step into the roles!
I miss Plo Koon with a yellow lightsaber. Loved that in Jedi Power Battles.

As a long time star wars fan and an enjoyed of fighting games, this is an amazing game. My one gripe which I'm pretty sure @Lastjawa heard of before, is that the animations are too fast. The characters seem a bit weightless and appear as if they have been put on 2-3x speed. Perhaps this was a design choice or that as a solo dev with limited help as I have read, limited resources to refine animations(more frames perhaps?) but I can't know for sure.
I hope it is refined to be weightier and slower a bit, especially in the animations department, I think it can become one of the best fan made star wars game ever made. And a really good fighting game. Thanks for this!

Discovered this video last night and downloaded as whilst it was playing and loving it. Great review! Currently sat frustrated though as i can't for the life of me beat the Emperor with Boba fett to unlock the next character. His lack of combos and his t rex like arms mean the second the emperor unleashes his lighting combos i just get pinned and die so quick. Will keep trying though

Malik is from the original Knights of the Old Republic. Indiana Jones doesn't pull a Thompson's Submachine Gun. It looks more like a MP40.

With Street Fighter 6 coming with the new Overdriver system I think more fighting game developpers should be inspired by to balance the movement and the speed of their game with the new mechanic. Its like having a stamina bar but with more intricacy since its tied also to your defense and ex attacks.

If I'm correct, the Dooku model was taken from Battlefront 2! A majority of the models that are not taken from past games are made by him though!
Characters that don't wield some sort of saber never made sense to me in a star wars fighting game

Why was the Red Guard made into Kir Kanos. Also I can't remember if there was a moment in the movie where Leia was captured before reuniting with her friends and meeting the Ewoks.
Kir Kanos was a pretty popular character in the Marvel Legends comics, and he had a unique lightsaber with that pike. That eventually led to him being picked for this game!
This guy did what I dream of doing, I am trying to find a way how to replicate a 2D sprite combat system in UE5 and create a Killer Instinct 2 demo like the boxart graphics. I've been doing a lot of research on it but guess I have to wait for ai to advance more with easier mocap.
You can actually mocap on your own with a good videocamera and blender if you're fine with 3D animation!

Something that really sticks out to me that I love is an appreciation for the Sequel Trilogy, it's really nice to see because a lot of Star Wars fans would probably not include them.

I downloaded it, but it keeps crashing every time I run it. I even tried changing the resolution, and no luck. Has anyone else run into this and is there a workaround?
For those also having trouble, I just got to the main menu. I guess the best work around is to choose to wait for the program to respond instead of choosing close program.

Aha! Nice catch!! Thats why I made sure to say "officially", because there have been smaller scale fighting game modes in other games. Biggest one was Revenge of the Sith's game having a duel mode, as well as the Wii versions of TFU having VS modes. And of course, the Clone Wars Lightsaber duels game! Maybe sometime in the future I'll review them all too if people would watch!!

A perfect guest fighter would be Flash Gordon since George Lucas originally wanted to make that movie.
Other fitting characters would be Captain Kirk, Commander Shepard, Master Chief, Alien, Predator, and someone from Doctor Who like a Cyberman. Bring in Nemesis from Rebel Moon since it was originally pitched as a Star Wars story (- ^ ) Heck, even Buzz Lightyear and Star Lord because Disney.

I get that he’s not profiting from this but I really don’t see why he can’t just reuse voice lines from the films/shows/games. I understand that doesn’t work with arcade endings but for intro lines it’s work great. A great work around for arcade endings is simply to do it like the recent Mortal Kombat games, just hire somebody to narrate what the character does after winning the ladder. Of course I’d like to see VAs hired instead of reused audio but it’s just one guy making a fan game so I get that he may not be willing to spend a bunch of money on it. Just get rid of all the AI stuff, I like what I see and it’s clear it’s a passion project but AI is theft.
In fact several Star Wars VAs have already made posts saying not to AI their voices. For example Stephen Stanton who voiced Tarkin in TCW, Rebels, Rogue One and Bad Batch, AP-5 in Rebels and Ben Kenobi in Rebels. If a VA finds out he’s using their voice that might start a lawsuit and a shutdown of the game. So there’s like a million reasons to get rid of the AI.
It’s a really looking passion project and I hope to see it grow but the AI stuff is worrying and something I really, really hope gets removed from the game. There’s plenty of VAs out there who’d love to work on the game. Great video going over the game regardless
I can easily answer that: he does. A lot of the characters that were present in games like Battlefront 2 or The Force Unleashed use previous lines, in fact almost every member of the cast does. It's only the characters that hand lines that aren't clean where AI is used. Also, I noticed that any character who specifically asked for their voice not to be used in AI has been avoided. I still recommend you try the beta, as it is a very fun game!!

My only issue is the controls. I play using a PS4 controller on my pc, don't do this! Instead of 1 stick controlling movement, you jump with one stick (by hitting down, I might add) and the other stick for forward and back. Now, I couldn't find any option to change the inputs, but I am no pro so it might be somewhere in the files.
Using keyboard feels much more natural to me i've found. Try it out!!

Masters of Teräs Käsi failed, and the lesson LucasArts and Star Wars learned is "never do a fighting game again" and not "maybe we should actually license our IP to the big studios that know how to do this, like NeatherRealm or Capcom." lol I just don't understand LucasArts sometimes.

visually the game is A-ok and the amount of content already staggering but I can't help but feel that the animations could have more intent from a game design standpoint, a lot more polish
I understand that completely! I believe the animations where actually free assets or taken from other things, but maybe in the future there can be more room for a proper animator!

You're thinking of Clone Wars Lightsaber Duels. Fairly alright game but due to it being controlled by the Wii remote it lacks any competitive value.

Edit : This..is...F*CKING AWESOME!!!! It reminds me of Episode 3 on the ps2 multiplayer!! It's SO COOL!! Also for the people wondering, for doing the combos "F = Front ; B = Back ; D = Down" and 1-6 are your attack keys. (I am not used to playing fighting games on pc) so for those wondering :)

Thok has actually been recently re-canonized thanks to a fairly recent book titled "A Certain Point of View", which also confirms that he fought Luke on the Sail Barge! So ironically, that fight is retroactively canon!

Honestly I wanna deep dive into that game, but the quality is not great and emulation still doesn't really work

i downloaded it and im loving the game but im having trouble getting controls mapped, its a nightmare... im running ds4 to help cause im on a dualshock 4 but some of the inputs are overlapping with second player so i cant go in practice mode. that part sucks, i wish the dev would put in a control map in game cause going thru ds4 and not having a way for my friend to map his controller is a complete hindrance on trying to play it. plus it gives me weird stuff like when i try to pick a tower it goes crazy and its hard to get the right settings/right tower
p.s. besides control issues when the game works its great. Having a ton of fun trying everyone out.

They can do Dark Luke and Indiana Jones but don't have Darth Plagueis as a Muun? Come on. There is a Black Series figure of the character.
Dark Luke gave freedom to create a new moveset and Indy was pretty simple to design is my best guess. Plus Plagueis never had any screentime at all to pull from. Its very hard to adapt a book only character.
@ThreepioToaru a lot of those characters didn't have any screen time. Darth Talon and Mara Jade didn't. They could use the staff of Ra for Plagueis' staff. San Hill was a Muun from the IBC and he was in episode 2 and 3. There is something to use there. Idk I loved the book and really connected with the character. Would be really cool to see the edition.
Best Star Wars fighting game goes to Starwars Ep 3 movie video game on ps2. If player one and two want to both be grievous player two would be a little grayer and darker and have red sabers. The second Vader will have a blue sword, etc. and the character pretty much all have unique dialogue

Not trying to hate on this game because for a sole developer, this is out fucking standing. That said, can someone explain to me why this game even exists ? I get the remake aspect and all but a licensed product with a 1/2 A developer? What am I missing with this franchise where it seems like they can do about 0 correct?
Listen, I understand back in the day where this was a necessary way to push content for George and the Star Wars franchise. But is it wild to think that a franchise worth billions of dollars should only be working in the Premier space and putting out content that aims for top game of the year in whatever genre the game is in?

I still find it weird seeing non-force users like Boba Fett going up against force users, nor this demand for nameless generic grunts like the Dark Trooper and Magna Guard.
Thats mostly because a lot of people wanted more than just lightsaber characters. Mando was added as a test and people liked the concept enough, so now anyone that has a feasible way to block is on the table!
Personally id like it more if it was 3d but i get it its trying to look like mortal kombat, but idk maybe having a slow rotating camera during the fight could be nice
