So, I bought the ATX 24 to Mini 24 pin Optiplex 980 cable I got from Fry's electronics. Plugged it all in and no power. I know the PSU works cause I got it from another PC. Put it back to make sure it works. But when I plug it into the 980. It does not work. What gives? The cable is new out the box. Even swapped it for another. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
The PSU EVEA 450BT works. Connected the adapter did not power on. Left a message with Raidmax.com tech support. Just waiting to find out what could be be the issue. The stock PSU powers on the 980. Just don't understand why it's not posting. Do you have any clue
Did you try onboard system diagnostics? Restart the computer. As the computer boots, press F12 when the Dell Splash Screen appears. When the Boot menu appears, highlight the Boot to Utility Partition option, or the Diagnostics option and then press Enter to start the legacy 32-bit Dell Diagnostics.
You can use any NVidia gtx 750/950/1050 that has connectors in one slot only... I used a dremmel to shave the corner of the plastic housing so that it would fit, and shaved down the second slot face plate cover, (it is only an exhaust port for the fan anyway). I did this for 3 lan OptiPlex 980's 2 years ago and they all work great as silent gaming machines (paired with the i7 870K unlocked processor. Also, I highly recommend getting a pci-ex riser card so you can make use of the NIC expansion slot as well, it will give you more expansion options if you want to put in a wireless A/C pci-express card in the second slot.

11:20 there is actually a dot on the motherboard next to the socket and there is an triangle on the corner of the cpu and you have to line it up with that dot. other than that awesome vid!
Hey guys, I just wanted to let everyone know that you can literally upgrade this Optiplex 980 with any graphics card. I'm running my Optiplex 980 with Nvidia GTX 1070 founders edition. Thats a very long card and it actually fits in the bottom PCI E slot(the black PCI E, not blue one). I got an i7 processor with 8GB ram and i'm running the latest games from year 2018 at ultra settings. You can even play games at 4K Ultra.
The blue slot is PCI E 16x and the black one is 4x...But there will be very minor difference in gaming performance if you compare 4x and 16x. The games will run hardly 5 frames slower on 4x as compared to 16x. But if you want to use the blue slot, then you have to remove the stock CPU cooler and add something like coolermaster hyper 212 evo on it. That should clear up the space for blue slot. But trust me, its not worth it. And one more thing, you have to replace that stock power supply unit with at least 500W power supply if you plan to use Nvidia GTX 1070 or higher.

You have to cut a little bit off the plastic cover at the bottom corner on the video card just enough to fit it on the pci x16 slot I use a regular wire cutter doesn't affect anything since the piece you are cutting is just decorative plastic cover on the video card, once cut it will fit fine with the big heat sink that was on the way. Low profile card.
Best video ever I did the same but I put a gskill ram 1333 MHz 16gb and I only play wow and a 6 setting with is more than medium 1080p at 95 low 60 FPS but other thing I put a gt 1030 I think it’s a lot than the one you put and fits just perfect
mxkdi as you put the psu the screws fit in the same holes of the psu so that I bought a psu of 800w when I put it I see that the gaps of the case does not match with the psu that I do respond soon

If you didn't get an ATX 2.0 power supply with the 4 PIN 12 V power cable that is why nothing happens. In this video 2 things to remember, the 24 to 24 mini pin connector, ATX 2.0 PSU compatibility, and this is a mini tower Dell 980 OptiPlex not an 980 OptiPlex SFF (Small Form Factor).

these models of Optiplex have problems with 4 gigabyte sticks of memory did you get that PC to actually boot to Windows because on those models if you don't run a certain type of ram they will go into a continuous restart which is my problem right now I can run four 2 gigabyte RAM sticks just fine
@@AdamWoodturner I used patriot viper, but as long as its dual channel and ddr3 it will be fine. Also you cant have anymore than 4gb a stick, max 16gb total. Meaning you cant used two 8gb sticks, you need four 4gb instead. I have a video on my build.

You know what I use to get old stubborn paste off? I slightly wet scotch brite greenie. Works every time. I discovered this back in the days of the Power Mac G5. Apple would really load them full of compound and it would cry and wouldn't budge. A blade wouldn't get it without maring up the suffices badly. A little it of rubbing alcohol or if it's really bad soak it if it's just the heatsink for a bit and rub, dry and re-apply.
i need help i put my corsair cx600 power supply in my dell optiplex 980 from my 2007 gaming pc build (which is my only good power supply) and it wont turn on none of the leds are turning on and when i press the power button it wont turn on and the pc wont boot the power supply and motherboard does work and even i got that 24 pin to micro 24 pin power adapter and the 24 pin adapter from the power supply wont fit but there is a way to separate the plug on the power supply by unclipping a 4pin and then hooked it up and i wont turn on no fans running, power led lighting up or any beep codes i tried searching anywhere but the same vague answers come up

Bro! i have the exact same pc and I've bee trying to get a geforce 7200gs properly working, the blue pci port just wont recognize the gpu and I think it woill work better there rather than putting it in the lower, black pci port, the lower, black port is the only one to recognize the gpu and allow me to install drivers but I feel the pc is actually running slower and even giving some errors. what do you recomend?
I ended up upgrading the psu and dumping an HD7970 in there, I had to use the black pci port since the GPU is too big but its been working flawlessly ever since
I literally did the same thing but I just replaced the cpu with an i7 that can run on 235Ws and put an Nvidia GT 730 in. Gaming computer for 130 bucks. I can play fortnite at 1080p @ 120fps no prob.

ive tried about 20 different ram sticks and cant get this model of the 980 optiplex dt with the 660 i5 to boot to windows with any 4 gb sticks,i seen a post on it saying they need to be 4 gb ddr3 1600, pc3-12800 ,CL=11,Unbuffered,non-ecc,1.35v -512megx64 ....... or 4gb ddr3 1600 mhz unbuffered non ecc 1.5v,512meg x64 and both of thoses are timed at 9-9-9-24,which of the 2 work is beyond me

Arnold Woodley, Yes a Xeon will work on the 980. The processor you need is the Xeon X3460 Socket 1156. It's very similar to the Core i7-860, but half the price. You can buy the processor on eBay for around $20-$40. Also, you need to update the bios to A17.

Nice video. I installed 4-4gb sticks of Corsair xms3 1333mhz in mine with a i7-860 and a gtx750 1gb version. I had to modify the 750. No chance in hell am I cutting up my gtx1050ti sc 4gb to put in mine. I also installed a killer rosewill wireless pci card.

This is caused by single rank memory which is oddly not supported in the 980, get some dual rank ram and it can run 16gb no issues.

You can put a GPU in the bottom PCI-e slot. I currently have a 750ti in the bottom slot and its working just fine.

What did you use for the 4pins. My power supply is atx and not atx mini. I can get a 24pin converter to mini but what about the other 4 pins.

Did you change the BIOS setting for which GPU slot is used? I think it's best set to "auto"

I just unscrewed the gpu fan to a rd 550 and placed the fan in a slightly different position
I literally did the same thing but I just replaced the cpu with an i7 that can run on 235Ws and put an Nvidia GT 730 in. Gaming computer for 130 bucks. I can play fortnite at 1080p @ 120fps no prob.

@@ATLTraveler I have not upgraded RAM yet, YET. My 980 SFF has 8GB RAM installed which is working fine but since that RAM is cheap, I want to bump to 16GB. I will get the specific RAM running in my system (2x4GB) and report back, give me a little time as I'm using it for work ATM. Thanks for the info on the CPU as I was hoping it was the 870.

I'm trying to find out what the best one is that will fit with minimum cutting/alteration. I think I definitely need to upgrade my ram and power supply for anything stronger than my 710.
@@ATLTraveler I don't have the GPU yet as I just acquired this Optiplex 980 SFF yesterday. I'm looking at a GT 1030 LP single slot and hoping the increased RAM, a new i7-870 and GT 1030 won't exceed the OEM 235W(?) PSU. If it does, then I'll be trying to source a higher power PSU that will fit and not cause issues.
How much ram can work for this one? Just got one earlier and have 2 8gb sticks of ripjaw ram. Haven't tried it yet

ive tried about 20 different ram sticks and cant get this model of the 980 optiplex dt with the 660 i5 to boot to windows with any 4 gb sticks,i seen a post on it saying they need to be 4 gb ddr3 1600, pc3-12800 ,CL=11,Unbuffered,non-ecc,1.35v -512megx64 ....... or 4gb ddr3 1600 mhz unbuffered non ecc 1.5v,512meg x64 and both of thoses are timed at 9-9-9-24,which of the 2 work is beyond me
you probably have bad ram slots or ram is too fast for the pc

Arnold Woodley, Yes a Xeon will work on the 980. The processor you need is the Xeon X3460 Socket 1156. It's very similar to the Core i7-860, but half the price. You can buy the processor on eBay for around $20-$40. Also, you need to update the bios to A17.

Nice video. I installed 4-4gb sticks of Corsair xms3 1333mhz in mine with a i7-860 and a gtx750 1gb version. I had to modify the 750. No chance in hell am I cutting up my gtx1050ti sc 4gb to put in mine. I also installed a killer rosewill wireless pci card.
