Found one of these in the dumpster with a fried Pentium D and no RAM, HDD, nor optical drive. Dropped $45 for a Core 2 Quad, Radeon HD, and 8 GB of RAM. Surprisingly fast and capable, considering it's a decade old.
Hey Steve, thanks so much for your help. I got the same video card as you suggest in the video for my Optiplex 745 and it works an absolute treat, and was easy to install thanks to your video. Now my son can do his movie editing and play Minecraft on two screens with good speed and rendering. We're both delighted. Many, many thanks again.
Thanks Steve for posting. Very informative and timely as I am just going to upgrade my 755 SFF HD to 1TB and hoping there will be no probs. Unlike other publishers on YT you have responded to many questions which is great. Thumbs-up to you!

For those of you asking what video card he's using, here's the best way to determine what will work: Look at how many amps a card takes up, then look at how many amps the power supply can withstand on the 12 volt rail. You also need to figure in how many amps the processor is taking up, because that's also on the 12v rail. I've had success with the Radeon HD 2400 pro, the Had 3450 pro, and the HD 4550. Look for cards with comparable amps to those 3.
I recently got my hands on one of these 755s (The small form factor version) and discovered something interesting about it. I had upgraded the CPU to a Core2 Quad Q9650 when I realized the Bios now showed options related to Vt-d virtualization technology. Turns out both it's motherboard and the CPU I'd installed supported it. I never got to play with Vt-d and I am a fan of virtualization so I thought about what I could do with it. Naturally, gaming is my first go to when contemplating ideas so I came up with setting up a couple of VMs and see if I can't play some multiplayer between them. So I got my hands on a couple of gt 520 cards (one pci and one pcie x1) with 512mb of video ram and slotted them in. They aren't powerful cards by today's standards, but plenty good enough for some older games I was interested in installing. I gave the system 8 Gb of 800mhz RAM and a 1 Tb 10krpm HDD. I knew that since it was going to end up basically being a server and two desktop computers that even though I was just installing older games, it needed all the RAM and drive speed it could get without compromising storage space for the games to be installed on. I installed Ubuntu Server on the computer along with Linux KVM to be the hypervisor. Then I set up my drive partitions and two virtual machines, and I assigned each one of the graphics cards. Then I installed Ubuntu Desktop on each VM and they were good to go and have the games installed via wine. I debated whether to set up a multi-seat configuration by just plugging in two monitors and keyboard/mouse combos, or whether I wanted it to run as a headless server for a couple of thin clients, but I settled on the multi-seat setup for perfomance reasons. Remote desktop just adds a delay to everything, and for gaming it needed to be responsive. That said, so long as I wasn't trying to remote in over the internet it should have been more managable. I now run it as a headless server with a few cheap thin clients in separate rooms so neither player can complain about cheating by looking at the other's screen.
***** I don't have a 745 mini computer to show you how to install an new video card but it may works the same as in my video. Here's a link i found that can get you started. Hope it helps! phubner.eng.ua.edu/Files/Optiplex%20745/mt_cards.htm#wp1105095
Watching the video, I realized that as I worked on a RAM stick on my unit, I was not pushing it in to click. That little bit of info, solved a problem and got me running again. I was trying to simply set the stick in and close the side clips. Thank you.
for anyone asking, you can'tupgrade the power supplies on any of the 745 optiplex series EXCEPT the 745 MINITOWER, the chasis usies a btx? which means virtually everything in it is proprietary. if you check out my chnanel you can actually see the upgrade i did to my optiplex which was upgrades CPU to c2d e6700, and a 6670 HSI thats about as good as its going to get which this platform, i can run any modern game on my platform without issue. bear in mind that with my graphics card i had to physically mod the card by shaving off some of the plastic to get it to fit in the case
Good quality video, nice job. One thing that would be good to include was the vid card model so we can know what works well with the board. You know the Dell, HP, Lenovo and other manufacturers don't always play nice with certain brands.
TechSteveSD Hi i am trying to add one in my dell optiplex 780 and i cant get the video card working it keeps saying system halted what can i do different thanks alot if you reply back I confirmed with dell it will work?

Good video. These old boxes can be upgraded really cheap to turn them into decent office-level workstations. Have you tried a PCIe graphics card on one of these that gives a dual-monitor output?
Thank you for showing me where the *harddrive* component is. Hard to believe its just below the DVD/Blu Ray components. Was thinking it was probably on the back around the motherboard. Also, what is behind the hard drive then? That box with *DELL* sticker on, what exactly is that for the PC?
Great video, im following the video at this very moment, except, what is the name of the blue plastic hard drive holder in the video, my second drive hd doesn't have one and I cant fix the drive in the bay.
This is a great video, thank you so much, i have recently installed a network adapter, but its way to long to fit in so i can close it, got any ideas to solve this please?
QUICK NOTE!: If you wanna game on this PC, now a few cards will fit in it there this the slim model and a fat model a evga 730 does work but you have to take of the front bracket and if your using VGA run it underneath the GPU to the 2nd port output. just thought I'd let y'all know, my brother was there to help me when I got this PC and a 730 to game on it, and it awesome!!!
Hey I've got a Dell Optiplex 3010 MT and I want to upgrade it, in the PCI slot area, it doesn't have those blue pins, how do I keep the video card in place?
Could you help? When you're installing a new hard drive, could you give the name of the second cable? And could you tell me where exactly I'm supposed to place the hard drive after I connected it? 'Cause i'm a little lost there
Sata cable found on most computers. If it’s a 2nd hd (ssd)i velcro in the case. If it’s full size you may have to replace the external drive or the disk drive and get a new cover to hide the hole.
Nice and clear video. Thanks. Now, could you install a second regular size HDD in the DVD bay if you didn't need a DVD drive? I liked your video because I have an old PC very similar to this that I'm also using as a server but it only has an 80 GB HDD and I'd like to add a second storage drive. I have an external DVD that I use when I need it so the server really doesn't need a DVD device in it. The 80GB is fine for it's purpose but I'd like to transfer music and video to a second drive so it doesn't need to rely on an external HDD for storage. What do you think?
Thanks.. I will no longer upload videos on this channel but use as a reference. my new channel is ruclips.net/user/techstevehd or techstevehd.com.. I will start upload new videos when i get some extra time...

Hello! I'm a Computer Tech. I've been upgrading computers since 1998. I have a vendor that sells me used SFF Dell's Optiplex like the one you are displaying here. I only request the Intel i3's, i5's and i7's. They don't have any hard drives or memory which, I can have at my shop. Believe it or not, he sells me the units for $20.00. Of course, they are in great shape. I bring my own hard drive and ram to make sure they are functioning correctly.I just add 1 TB Western Digital Green hard drives, and 8 GB Ram, I install whatever OS it says on the Product Key and that is all to it. Oh! I sell them for only $99.00 each. And I give the clients a 1 year warranty too!
I have an Optiplex GX 520. It does not have a video card in it and I use the internal video chip. I need it to run full hd video. Will this video card that you use work on my model too? Or would you recomend something better?
Just look for low profile video cards. It depends if you want the best rez. I would do dual hdmi and buy converters to change back to dvi or vga ,so you will be ready for the future. But just about any low profile cards will work. This should get you started bit.ly/14rLcjO
Hi great video thanks for uploading..on the Dell 755...I have a problem with my internet connection that's not connecting after update with Windows 10...Which was already running on it.....Any ideas what it could be?
Hi Steve, many thanks for this very informative video. I have an old Optiplex 745, would the video card you used in this work on the 745 desktop model (looks just like the one in this video)? Would this allow me to use two monitors/displays? Do you know if this would enable me to play Minecraft? Really appreciate any help you can give. Many thanks.
Many thanks Steve. They look pretty cheap online, about $30-$40. Would you know any better graphics cards for the optiplex 745 (that are as easy to fit as the one shown)? Thanks for your help :)
That one serves my purpose for windows media center videos. You would only want more if you're doing gaming. I say go for it! I'm going to start adding part to my techsteve amazon store soon if you want help support my channel in the future. bit.ly/1rs2KHj

Hello I currently have a dell optiplex 755 with a 80gb hard drive. I want to upgrade this and I am looking for a cheap 250gb hard drive that I can upgrade it with. Could you please send me a link to get this. Also I wanted to know could I also keep the 80gb hard drive as a second drive and get maybe another 2.5 hard drive like u mentioned and how I would do that and if you could also get me the link for that kind of smaller hard drive?
hay, Is there any additional Cpu cooler for dell optiplex 760, or smaller if I want to put bigger GPU, because the plastic of the cooler is taking space?

Hello I have a couple of questions: Did you upgrade cpu or motherboard at all? If not I can max the ram at 8gb? Also, what graphics card would you recommend?

Just look for low profile video cards. It depends if you want the best rez. I would do dual hdmi and buy converters to change back to dvi or vga ,so you will be ready for the future. But just about any low profile cards will work. This should get you started bit.ly/14rLcjO

What would be the best video card for this for under $50 I'm willing to go over $10
Hi great video thanks for uploading..on the Dell 755...I have a problem with my internet connection that's not connecting after update with Windows 10...Which was already running on it.....Any ideas what it could be?
Is it the same process went updating the 780 optiplex
Is it the same kind of process with the optiplex 780 destktop? Cause the insides looks kind of the same.
I don't have a 780 but most dells are similar
What power supply are you using for that? And mine has 100-200wts, would mine work for all those upgrades?
For these upgrades it would most likely work if your PSU is a 200 wat
Hi Steve, many thanks for this very informative video. I have an old Optiplex 745, would the video card you used in this work on the 745 desktop model (looks just like the one in this video)? Would this allow me to use two monitors/displays? Do you know if this would enable me to play Minecraft?
Really appreciate any help you can give. Many thanks.
Yes, If it's a full size model just don't use the low profile adapter.
