My Dream First Drive in the MERCEDES CLK GTR!

- Never in my life did I think I might have an opportunity to drive the absolute icon that is the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR... but that dream has become reality! Thanks to @the_collection1, it wasn't even just "a drive" but a full blown convoy on the Bahrain F1 circuit with his McLaren F1, Porsche 911 GT1 and Maserati MC12 as well as a P1 and the epic Apollo IE. WOW!
During a track evening hosted at the Bahrain International Circuit by Supercars Club Arabia, countless incredible cars attended including some particularly special members of the garage belonging to @the_collection1 - whose collection is one of, if not the very best in the entire world. Alongside it was also a presentation of the new Apollo IE and an opportunity to see and hear the car in action, including a parade lap featuring the icons present. With almost no notice ahead of time, @the_collection1 invited me to join in the convoy, and in this case to take the wheel of one of my dream cars - the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR.
I have to apologise for my giddiness and even in some cases incorrect statistics - this was a whirlwind moment that caught me completely unaware but was so magical at the same time. There are only 20 units of the CLK GTR Coupe, plus an additional 2 prototypes and 6 Roadsters; the road going version of the successful FIA GT1 racecar. With a 6.9l V12 with over 600hp and almost 800nm, it's an immense machine with a completely raw driving experience.
With a value on the car of around £3-4m, combined with the others taking part we were looking at a £25m convoy for a few laps together in a scene unlikely to ever be repeated again. To be part of this alone was something unique and special; to do so at the wheel of the Mercedes CLK GTR even more so. I cannot thank @the_collection1 enough for this unbelievable experience.

It's amazing to me that you can actually HEAR how different the car sounds when it's accelerating 'hard' vs just lugging along during the slower moments. You can tell audibly that the car WANTS to go fast, NEEDS to go fast, that it was BUILT to go fast. It just doesn't sound happy at slower speeds, with all the clunking and whining as it pulls at its reigns and demands that you put your foot down on the go pedal. Crazy beautiful auto.
You must not know much about cars outside of video games. The gears, transmission, and brakes in cars such as this (purpose built for race) are very loud, and once that holy engine reaches certain RPMs you just can't hear them as well. Has nothing to do with what the car "wants," because its an inanimate object.

Knowing the history shared between the McLaren F1, the Porsche 911 GT1, and the Mercedes CLK, all those battles all those years ago, and seeing them here after all is said and done is magical. Like watching mythical beats roaming around you. You just KNOW that all 3 HATE going slow. They were meant to roar around tracks at blinding speeds, fighting for glory, for victory, for legacy.

The Apollo IE is NOT a real hypercar.
I love how the wheel and gauge cluster are basically straight out of their 190E (or some other family sedan) haha. Coolest car ever.
This is exactly what I love about my Ford GT too; they have similarities in that they use so many normal parts from the brand, and the cars were built purely for racing and homologation

Pretty much dream garage right there. The raw sounds of straight cut gears, V12 and no sound deadening will soon be a thing of the past. But they sound oh so beautiful!
These days we have V6 Turbo crap, wish it would be more like what it was back then.
Everytime he changes gears it sounds like its gonna explode.
Cars &Watches not meant to change at that low of RPM. Straight cut gears... awesome but that’s why they’re not on street cars

@@tonyppe no. Like my man said, straight cut gears. Need to be at certain speed/rpm for them to work properly.
It’s got nothing to do with having straight cut gears, it’s because they are dog engagement. The dogs on the selector ring and the dogs on the gear face cause the aggressive banging noise as they engage on each gear change. At higher rpm the change can happen much quicker and smoother. ‘Dog boxes’ are designed to be used hard and at high rpm, and are much more likely to be damaged if they’re not.

I had to come back to this video just to see the excitement the CLK GTR brings again. I've been driving it on Forza lately, remembering how unique the car is with the gearbox - I'd love to see one in the flesh again. I wish more were made just so more people could know about this beast of a car!

As a kid I once took a seat in the CLK GTR race car driven by Klaus Ludwig at the Nurburgring. I'll never forget - and I can't even imagine how you felt driving it. Great video :-) Brings back good memories.

That was awesome! In my heart and soul no other car stands above the CLK GTR. I’ve been tracking down all of them since 1999 and only found roughly half of the road legal versions.

One fact makes the clk rise above to me; it dominated the McLaren F1 gtr and Porsche gt1 so badly in gt championship it made them simply quit the whole series!

I feel like the proportions of the clk gtr were way ahead of their time. I remember when it came out I thought it just looked like a ridiculous version of the clk. Everything about it was so extreme it just looked strange and over styled. However now that more cars have extreme proportions like these and that the designs have evolved in this direction, it just looks amazing!👌
