- Exploring and Driving My GMC Sonoma GT (This thing is Awesome!)
I figured I would take some time to talk a little more about my Sonoma GT. I have had a couple questions about it and several people think it is a Syclone. I actually had a GMC Syclone at one time but this is the poor mans version. The GMC Sonoma GT was made on year only in 1992. They only made 806 Trucks and this color is 1 of 107. In the Production line it is number 803. When I originally went to look at this truck I couldn't believe how well it was cared for. I got all of the original parts and paper work. The 4.3L V6 isn't fast but does have 195hp and 260lb ft of torque. I would love to do a LS engine swap done the road for this thing. I have always been a s-series truck guy. My first truck was a S10 Cameo. I still think I may own another someday. The GMC Sonoma GT is a Rare truck and has a pretty loyal following.

More S10 content 👍!!!!!!! The most underrated Chevy pickup.
Thank you. They are a special kind
I might have to agree with you. 😁
My first car is a s10: it’s a 97 and it was in rough shape when I got it from my dad. We fixed all the issues she had and had her repainted and now I have a sport truck
That's awesome. I wonder how many people had one for a first truck. Bet it was a lot
My dad has had a GMC Sonoma.
I very liked this car.
I liked the noise, the look, the aggressive 4.3L V6 engine compared to the cheap japanese cars that are most popular in my country.
My Dad used to drive Japanese/Frenches car, so when he starter to drive the Sonoma, he got more then a few flashes from speed cameras, but magically, he wasn't got the reports.
It was a real pleasure to be a passenger in this car and it has to be even more pleasure to drive it yourself. Unfortunately, I was too little to drive a car those days, but one day I may have my own GMC Sonoma. 😥
That's an awesome story. Love hearing stuff like this. Thank you for sharing
I say back to the original radio for the look. It’s not like you drive far for road trips… And I am sure we can all go 30 minutes without our phone!! 😁
Cheers
That's a good way to look at it
I have a 91 Sonoma ST. 24k original miles new driven in the rain never packed anything totally original. Love it!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Very nice
I recall seeing this truck for sale on the web. I always wondered what happened to it. Nice to see it in action.
I own SoGT 264 (blk/blk), Sy 1264 and Ty 0767. Other things occupy my time, but I still find myself searching the web for these '90s unicorns.
I do the same as far as searching. Lol. I had to hunt down the guy and it wasn't listed for sale anymore when I bought it
Dream☆♡
Back to the future man that's a winner trick damn wish I could find one over here
Yeah. Should have kept it
About 6 years ago I got my 2nd S10. This one is a black extended cab xtreme!! My first S10 was an 88 that belonged to my dad. I absolutely love these trucks!!!! My xtreme has 300k miles but I replace the engine about 60k miles ago. It’s a new Jasper 4.3 v6.
Everything under this hood is new! Everything!! I’ve put soo much money into this thing but I just love S10 trucks! Im thinking of doing an LS engine also but this v6 is just so good, it won’t be soon. Paint is good but s10’s rust at the base of the cab. Gonna paint next and new wheels! Love the Syclone and Typhoon but they are really expensive and it’s more than what I wanna pay. Love your truck!!!!! Other than the LS, I’d leave it alone! Great video!!!!
Sound like you have a keeper. Thanks for sharing
Another great video, Travis! Neat to see the documentation and the range of options available. I had a couple of friends back in the day who had 1st gen S trucks..one a base model '91 Sonoma with the new grille & a Tahoe trim S10. Was able to convince my Dad to buy a new '88 S10 EL with the 2.5 5 speed. ..super plain. No radio, no cigarette lighter...no power anything except brakes. I had a '82 Z28 at the time and would oftentimes put my Z wheels on the S10...Dad was pretty cool about it even though he didn't follow my passion completely 😎😁
That's awesome. Cool to hear stories like this.
I had 2 S-10 square bodies, a 1984 black on black with a 2.5 and a 4 speed. And I had a 1992 S-10 tahoe with the 2.8 and a 5 speed. The 84 was my first truck, but I got t-boned and totaled the truck. The 92 was one of the best trucks I have ever owned, and my ex took it when she left.So now I have a 1996 cheyenne and a 1967 C-10.
Nice. I think s10s were several people's first trucks.
I love that truck. My favorite in your garage. If it were me, and being as particular as you are, I’d swap it but keep all original components
I may swap it down the road.
Or boost it.
Don't rain on me please...driving by windows just to see your trucks reflection...yep, car guy!
Indeed
I have the 91 ST model , just love these trucks
They are unique now
My 1988 Chevy s10 was my first truck I got it when I was 18 I still have it today and I’m 33 it’s my baby
Thats awesome you still kept it
You sold it man wish I would've found you sooner I would've bought it I will own one of each of the special s10s
Yeah the owner loves it
That is a really nice truck. I love how stock it is. That is why I say put the stock radio back in. Those trucks were and still are cool looking trucks.
Thank you. I really dig s series trucks.
Me to. I did have a 1993 Ford Ranger Splash. It was the first new vehicle that I bought. It was pretty sharp back in the day. Lol
My dad always wanted one of those
Beautiful looking truck
Thank you
I might be mistaken but I did not see one traffic light in downtown. Not something you see nowadays. I remember my hometown had one light on the main hwy. Benton, LA. Good times.
Oh we have our share of traffic lights.
I always liked the extremes. Definitely a time capsule you have....
Thank you. I had an extreme blazer at one point
That bed is so clean!!!
It is crazy.
I remember looking at both a teal and white GT at a dealership in Jacksonville NC. I made a deal on the white one, sadly the dealership went under the next day. They wouldn’t sell me the truck and it had to go back to GMC..
Crazy
Such a clean truck, didn’t know the production numbers were that low!Would look sweet lowered on some corvette Zr1 wheels, and of course an Ls1 under the hood.👌🏼👌🏼
It would look good with an ls under the hood
That's CLEAN...would have thought it was a s10 modded...nice to learn.. millionaire buy, would be a syclone..
More rare than a syclone actually
Yeah that would be pretty sweet with the ls down in it with a little cam in it. A nice little set of meats on the back
Maybe someday when I get extra money and time. Lol
@@TWAMotorsports I hear ya.
Love the video. I never knew this truck was ever made and that was my era. It's very unique. Always loved the styling of the Syclone's but they were $15K more than the regular S10 reg cab but I also liked the Cameo's too. So this would've been a great option for me back then. I did drive one back in the 90's and loved it. Actually saw a Marlboro Edition Syclone at a show in the mid 90's
Yeah they're cool trucks in my opinion
Huge huge huge fan of mini trucks and speciality trucks like this. Can't wait for you to find a lil red express..
Thank you. No dodge products here lol
I think you should put the stock radio back in it, it will make the interior look so much nicer IMO
I think you're right
Perfect side by side comparison,appreciated
Thank you
I did not know there was a Sonoma GT. Wow. I had an 89 S10 with the 4.3 with a 5 speed. But it topped out at 160 hp. I can only imagine that 200 horse 4.3 ran like a scalded dog. I know mine did. Now I want a GT lol. My S10 had the bench seat. Plenty of room.
It did run good for its day
15:24 bye bye stop sign 😂
LS the blue one leaving it all original but a runner under the hood. Aren't there performance parts for the V6. I loved my 4.3. You're making me want another one.
I actually have sold both now
I ALWAYS let my 4.3 warm up before I take off. I love my s10. This thing is so nice!
Thank you. Me too
@@TWAMotorsports are you on Instagram?
@@TWAMotorsports never mind I just found you!
I am
I love your truck! I had a 91 and absolutely love it! I think a nice Ls1 would fit nice in the bay. I would just get a new Alpine head unit so you can hook up to your phone.
Thank you. Maybe down the road we can do this
As much as I love the ls engine. The 4.3 is enough engine for that truck.
Its getting tired and leaky though
Yes! I have been waiting for more coverage on this vehicle. Such a cool little truck. Given the mileage, I would say it is a perfect candidate for an LS swap given how nice the overall condition is. Stock LS3 would be my choice. Would be more than enough power to have serious fun in that truck.
I am the same way on idling down...drives my wife nuts! lol. I also turn off the ac and radio prior to turning the car off as well. Old habits die hard...
Lol. Yeah I would love to do an ls3. I swear my wife has a car in drive or reverse before the key is in.
Awesome video man! I have sonoma gt number 591 forest green.
Thank you. I watch your channel. I asked you about yours before buying this one.
Both trucks are damn sharp....my dad had a 91...I got a 97 sports side bed...I wouldn't trade it for anything....
They are a classic look
Buddy bought an 88 s10 brand new it was 4995. Stripped but it was so great. Love these trucks
Its amazing what they could be bought for.
The key release was because they used a column from a manual truck because of the floor shift
I assumed that was what's up
Some of us kept those knock outs because of the code that goes with the keys, but I remember when those and the Syclone came out and I still want one till this day. I still have my s10 that I graduated high school with in 1991.
That's awesome
One of my dream trucks.
Mine too
I have an S10 rc/sb that I bought new in 1993. I still have the window sticker. It’s lowered with billets wheels. I used to show it 20 years ago, but mostly it sits in my garage. I also love rc/sb full-size trucks as well. Ps. You can heat up the a/ c vents and crush them in a bit without affecting airflow. I fit my Alpine CD in flush. Newer non CD radios with BT are usually not as deep.
Thats awesome that you still have it. I agree the new radios are not as deep.
Sweet ride. Had a ‘91. No power, but a great little truck. Had the 4 banger.
Thank you. I just love the looks
@@TWAMotorsports ya, me too!
Love the Truck, I had a 1992 S10 dove grey color which was cool, 6cyl 5sp man. Loved it, like you said great power for that size and weight.
Thank you. 5 speed would be more fun to drive
Man she’s a beauty
Thank you
Had a black one. First thing I did was swap out the black and chrome wheels with American racing “syclone look-alikes.” Kinda fun to drive for a truck it would really wake up at about 3600 rpm. She’d get an easy second gear “chirp” from the tires when you were showing off (no iroc-z I know, I know). You forgot to talk about locking rear axle and the standard tonneau cover. Sold mine for $5500 when I got married because I needed a riding lawn mower. 🙄
That's awesome. Crazy how time changes things. Sold for a mower. Lol
Nice truck!
Thank you. Should have kept it
Beautiful truck. I’d recommend an LV3 swap. Gets you a direct injected 5th gen 4.3. Preserves the heritage of the truck and gets you the benefits of modern engine technology
Thank you. I would go to the trouble for another v6 I don't think
@@TWAMotorsports I wouldn’t under estimate it. There are a few turbo setups making considerable power. Plus everybody has an ls swapped s10/sonoma - me included ;-)
It would be nice to see something other than an ls swap
@@TWAMotorsports here you go: ruclips.net/user/buzinhalfdozen
That's awesome
both of em sweet as hell.
Lol. Not the baby blue one.
a big block would help but its alright as is. honestly its nice to have something you dont care if it gets beat up.
Yeah the blue one gets abused.
Man a 90s boy dream right there. I had a 92 to also midnight blue wish I had today great video
That's for sure lol. Thank you Daniel
Love the Sonoma GT, I have a clean lowered Sierra GT that I’ve had a long time. Great trucks
Thank you. Such a great looking era
Nice truck
I have a 1987 s10 chevy durango , 5 speed 4x4 , ext cab and I love it ✌
They are good trucks
Great looking truck I think you should restore your work truck as far as the Sonoma GT its awesome just the way it is but you can never go wrong with upgrades you also have an awesome collection wow 💪
Unfortunately both are gone now.
Awesome trucks. I had an 86 S10 regular cab and then an 88 S15 Blazer. I love these little square bodies. I sold them both at least 15 years ago. I’ve been looking to get one again, but good rust free ones are really hard to find here in Canada. I’ve never seen a Syclone, Typhoon, Cameo or Sonoma GT here. I’ll keep searching. Wish me luck.
They are hard to find. Nobody took care of them. Good luck on your search
Clean truck ls motor time, wilwood brakes all 4 corners
Lol. That's the spirit
That’s a beautiful old town. Be a great place for a photo shoot.
Its neat downtown if you haven't lived here your whole life. Lol
@@TWAMotorsports huh, i was just thinking how bleak and desolate it and so many other small midwest towns look. made me think of some around me. lots of for sale or lease signs and empty buildings. makes me sad to see what im sure were once much more vibrant downtowns seem so empty and beige. brighter note, i love your truck. find a nice baja to add next
I agree. Would be cool to see businesses there. Baja are neat but not really something I see me buying
Wheels size amazing truck
20s
I had an extended cab 1991 Sonoma GT back during the "mini truck" days. Had the 2.8 with the 5 speed but it was lowered and was a fun little truck
I think you might be mistaken. They never made an extended cab sonoma gt
Only 92. One year production. Syclones 91. Typhoons 92and 93. I think that’s right
I have seen a different gt trim package
They made a trim package that said Sonoma gt. I have seen a few.
@@TWAMotorsports you sure that wasn't Sonoma ST?
Awesome sonoma gt
Thank you
I just gave you the 346th like I think that's sign you should put a ls1 in it! Some dumbass gave you a dislike. Why? How can you dislike this truck. I love it!
Lol. It happens.
The shifter almost looks like a C4 Corvette shifter... interesting truck. I like it.
Oh and if you do install the OG radio... I bought a Bluetooth adapter for a cigarette lighter that transmits the radio and phone for my Trans Am and it works great to make calls and listen to music via phone. I’ll see if I can find the link.
Thank you. I love it
I think I will do the same
@@TWAMotorsports I posted the link not sure if it posted but let me know and I’ll send it or post it again
I actually ordered one yesterday lol. It generally scrubs links and emails
19:28 (me ever time i see my reflection on a store window) 👍🏼😂
Lol. I can't help myself
@@TWAMotorsports ....I can't resist either. I do that in my daily driver, somewhat rusty, '05 NBS RCSB 😄😇
Lol. Nothing wrong with that
never been into a the small little pickups like s10, sonoma, ranger and tacoma but that body package and little details makes a whole difference than the base package sonoma
It does make them look better
Dam that truck is beautiful man I've wanted one of these for a long time congrats to you on this find
Thank you
great video
Thank you
Love the video 👍🏽, I have a 95 Sonoma. Been having it for 17 years it my toy.
Thank you. Such great trucks
I just subscribed to you! I am totally blind and typing with a laptop using a screen reader called NVDA!
Thank you for subscribing
1st time viewer, damn that small town looks like my home town here in Tx.
Yeah. Maybe 8k people. Thanks for watching
@@TWAMotorsports np, hope you bring in more subscribers, I like the content. I love my sls but hot damn that gt is badass. I'm not a fan of the square bodies (90s kid) but they are definitely growing on me. 1st gen feel more street rod and 2nd feel more lowrider and I'm wishing now I had me a 1st gen too.
Yeah I understand that
the instrument cluster is from a pontiac sunbird
Interesting
Nice truck brotha 🤘🏽😎 I have #681
She’s red. I just love it man.
Thank you. That's awesome. Crazy they made so little of them.
Cool ride bud! I miss my 93 Sonoma 4x4
Thank you. 4x4 are rare in these too
Back when these trucks were new I got invited to come drive them and ride in the Syclones at Bandimere Speedway. I remember thinking how the GT was pretty punchy despite having no turbo. GM had a whole traveling set up that they took around the country. Apparently not msny people took ghd bait znd bought a GT
That's awesome!
Seen.a couple of these at a car show this past summer teal and a red one
They are rare sights
Great Video! I own a black on black GT. It’s definitely a fun truck. Your description and in depth video is great. Well done Sir
Thank you. I'm actually selling it this weekend. Need to slim down some projects
@@TWAMotorsports do you mind sharing the selling price? I’ve been watching Sonoma GT prices lately. A friend of mine just sold his restored green GT for 18k
$15000
@@TWAMotorsports from what I can see of yours… worth every penny imho. I’m sure the new owner will enjoy it.
It is so nice I was hoping he would not show. He will give a good home. He has a typhoon
I believe there are a few companies that will convert the stock radio internals to a Bluetooth system and look stock. Also as for the lowered look. You need to get the 3rd gen trans am GTA gold wheels in a reproduction 17" and it would look soo good! Basically my dream truck haha
Thank you. Yeah theose would probably look good
Definitely swap the radio back to stock
I'm going to
Definitely a nice truck. Theres a Typhoon in Philadelphia it looks to need some work but think it was $5,500 I would definitely buy it if I could for something to mess with
That are fun
Awesome truck..I'd LS swap it . Make sure to make everything work tho. Like gauges, a/c ,cruise, etc.
That is the plan if I do a swap
The cluster is from the Pontiac Sunbury.
Sunbird
No, you have the same cluster. Syclone had a boost gage to the right of the tac. Same as a 1990 Sunbird gt
That's interesting. Thank you for that info
I think it would be cool to do a TPI 350 swap. It would look like the factory did it. LT1 cam, SLP runners and headers would probably be 300ish HP. All of your accessories would bolt right up. A corvette servo, shift kit and mild stall would probably put that sweet truck in the low 13's and be rock solid reliable. If you found a set of factory aluminum TPI Corvette heads the engine weight would be really close to the 4.3. I bet some people would think it was factory.
A clapped out late 80's C4 would make a great donor. ➕
I just couldn't go to that extreme for that power plant. Would be cool though
No way do that. Might as well mod your other s-10 IMO.
👍, 👍stock radio.
I agree
Nice, looks fun. What was that green truck next to it at the end of the video?
My Sierra
Nice 👌
Thank you
I’ve always loved the s10s and the Sonomas. I have a 92 Sonoma 4.3 tbi, it’s been totally redone like your Sonoma gt. I’d like to lower mine and add some finishing touches it needs.
Me too. Something about them
@@TWAMotorsports they are a dying breed 😢
That's for sure
that jawn is stupid clean bro
Thank you. It is clean
They used the manual transmission steering column that's why it has the key release. They didn't want to make a special column for that model
I figured that was the case.
Love that Truck!!!!
Thank you Mike. Me too
I love that truck Travis, can you bring it to the Brahms car meet? I would love to see it in person
I will try to do that if I'm ever around when one is going on.
Funny we must of got our trucks at the same time.
You have one? What color?
@@TWAMotorsports 92 S10 , little 2.8 V6 5 speed it's black and rust lol.
Lol
Alpine bumpin but I need the volume higher!
Lol
If it has no aux go back to stock lmao, great video
Probably will
Had a factory CD player in mine. Nothing screams early ninety‘s like your cd folio book with all your favorites tucked away in their individual sleeve, ha! Still can’t believe I sold that truck. It would almost be even cooler to leave it lowered and go back to the factory gt wheels.
That's for sure
Sweet truck ❤️ sound amazing, what exhaust system do you use on it?
Thank you. Actually stock exhaust
Very cool truck! My late father bought a brand new 1982 fully loaded S-10 Tahoe 5 speed when they first came out. I grew up with that truck! Put the stock radio back in. That's a nice town you live in where is it? I live in the hell hole of California :(
Lol. That's awesome. These trucks are just so neat and everyone had one because they were affordable.
Looks great!
Thank you
My first vehicle is a s10 and I am not mad about it
They are great first cars
@@TWAMotorsports thanks ...also me and my dad are restoring it because it was parked for almost 10 years and its going pretty well is already running and I am painting it from a vanilla/yellowish color to a blue
That will be a great project
I’ll buy the Alpine head unit and changer from you if you decide to swap the factory back in…
I have 2 people wanting it now lol
Don't do it. Definitely keep the alpine til it stop working right
Look like Sonoma cyclone so nice
Thank you
I'm guessing you want to keep the drivetrain stock, but I'd love to turbo that bad boy but keep it "sleeper status". Upgrade to an aftermarket EFI
I actually sold it.
Thats a nice truck. I went with my buddy back in maybe 2001 to buy a syclone. He used it as a daily driver and being in ohio it didn't age very well. But we had some good times in it. Another buddy has it now and is ls swapping it. Your truck would be great with a 6.0 and a 2300 blower...
I bought a Syclone like 1999 2000 it was in a flood completely under water then sat for years but it was 100% complete i kept it for a couple years it just sat then I sold it to a guy who full restored it back to stock. He still has to this day it's super clean and a driver
That is awesome. I remember going to look at my syclone and my buddies firebird lost third and fourth gear. Drove back 2 hours in 2nd lol
That's awesome
In going to go buy a gmc Sonoma single cab today
Old square ones are cool
Also kinda want to see the stock radio put back in it
Stay tuned
