Thank you for so many wonderful videos. I'm 68yrs old and I resistance train quite intensely 3 time a week. I've been dealing with type 2 diabetes for 20yrs. The longer I have it, the more difficult it is to control and the more difficult it is to stick to an extremely strict diet. I feel like I'm on a roller coaster ride with A-1c 6.1 then 6.8. Sometimes, even though I've dealt with it for as long as I have, and know people who have suffered and died from it, I just get tired of it. I'm trying to keep as much muscle as I can to absorb the glucose, but as I age I also fatigue and it takes my nerves system longer to recover. Doesn't seem like there's an easy way to go through this.

Just diagnosed with and need to know how many carbs a day max for me. I am 70 years old very overweight and sedentary. Basic 2 meals daily plus a snack. My main thing is sweet drinks, I am always sipping on something
As low as possible since I have healthy fat for my energy. I am a swimming coach. I am on Keto diet. Even I need to teach 4 - 5 hours per day. I still practicing very low carbs, I burn fat for my energy. And, I have been practicing for 10 years.
0:19 19 seconds in, I was already crying. I've been feeling so desperate with Information Overload with no really good advice. I've been attempting low carb on my own, using keto as inspiration. Today I found out that my glucose was 115 (admittedly, I had eaten about an hour before, unaware I was getting my blood drawn) and my potassium is high - not quite to hyperlalemia (sp?), but enough to know that I'm probably diabetic. My urologist (unrelated to diabetes) recommended I follow up with my regular physician about these labs, since they aren't part of the kidney function she was looking for. (Metabolic label was cheaper than specific kidney tests!) Aware now that my terrible eating last year put me in a serious situation now, I went looking for help. I am so grateful that there is such a straight forward video, for once, that can tell me what to do to start, beginning tomorrow morning! Respect and love to everybody reading this. God bless 🙌
As you say there are many factors involved when trying to work out a sensible range of daily carbohydrate intake (or per meal if the number of daily meals are defined). So the examples given will not match all viewers. What would have been nice would be some kind of equation where one could plug in relevant values and come up with good ballpark figures. At present I've simply taken from the video the low values for someone who is in a much more serious position than myself. I'm hoping just to get back to normality without it being vtal to become more active, nor take prescription medication, and hopefully not going overboard trying to cut everything desirable out.
Someone said that diabetes is really an eating disorder. You eat way more than what you need. It may not be 100% true but it's really about your food intake vs your physical activity.
I was recently diagnosed when I was hospitalized for another issue (long story...). The Dr came into my hospital room and simply said "blah-blah, numbers, kidney values, white blood cell counts...blah-blah...oh, by the way, you're diabetic now. A nutrition Dr will be in shortly to explain things to you". and he left....I as like...um...wha? huh? Oh...OK. The Nutritionist gave me a binder with a ton of papers in it with meal plans, dos and don'ts and a lot of words that still were a shock to my still ringing ears. But because my diabetes wasn't extreme...I think my A1C was 9.7...She said that for breakfast and dinner, I can consume 60 grams of carbs per meal. She said "4 units of carbs per meal" with one "unit" being 15 grams of carbs...so yeah...math...She gave me a meter, some strips and finger poking things and a book to keep track of my glucose. I looked at that 60 grams, or 4 units of carbs as the absolute maximum and worked to stay way under that... but 60 grams of carbs is going to be difficult. I have to say, my average carb intake *PER* meal was probably 150 to 200 grams because most of my meals were strictly meat and potatoes with bread and some kind of cake or cookies or pastry for desert. So, going to under 60 is going to be tough. This was 6 months ago. I'm averaging about 20-30 grams of carbs for dinner. Zero carbs for breakfast (usually only eggs or Magic Spoon cereal) and about 20 grams of carbs for lunch. In less than 3 months, my weight went from 220 to 190 and has stabilized at that. My A1c went down to 6.1 and that's with 1,000mg of Meformin twice a day and zero exercise. I go and get tested for my A1c again in about 2 weeks and I've been pretty good, although with the holiday season upon us, I am cheating more than I want to admit. I'm still severly reducing my carbs...dinner tonight was meatloaf and riced cauliflower. So, zero carbs...but being German, I did get a box of Lebkuchen for xmas from Germany from my mother (made in Neurenberg Germany)...I can't say no to those traditional German xmas ginger breads. So, we'll see....I don't expect my A1c to go down...but hopefully, it won't go up too much!
We all have hard choices to make I hope you find someone to share your Mum's treats with are you able to think of someone worthy of your sacrifice. I have made a batch of my family's traditional Christmas bread that my great grandmother Louisa Knorr made after her eldest daughter married a Cornfield his family were Bakers . I made it for my son he shares it with friends coworkers and his wonderful wife and amazing daughter . We usually make it together but schedule conflicts mean we will make more after Christmas and I am now feeling guilty putting them in harm's way with the level of carbs😲🤔🖖👍🖖🇨🇦👋🙋🏼♀️👋
33 grams if carbs per meal is acceptable which is most 100 carbs a day..I do 50 carbs a day and lost weight in 4 months my A1C was 10.1 now its 4.8 I did it with no exercise cause i cant I have MS really bad neuropathy in my feet and legs..very painful.. I hope my info helps you, beWell❤
What is considered physically active? I work a sedentary job but walk for an hour after work every day and am very active on the weekends. I was diagnosed with T1D 5 years ago at 50. I limit my carbs to 40g a meal but am not in control.
Question I have type 1 but I keep my a1c in a good 6.6 range, but I am young and active and eat lots of carbs per meal around 70-100, are high spikes to let’s say 200-240 bad even if they go down to 130- after 2 hours?

I have a question about insulin in general. I've been a type 1 for 53 years. Are there any studies showing the effects of high dosages of insulin over time? My diabetes is under very good control presently but not in my younger years. High dosages of insulin due to excess carbs. Teenage rebellion. Pizza, chips, etc.
After losing 100 lbs my dr says that based on my numbers she can no longer say i have diabetes, however i now have “severe rebound (reactive) hypoglycaemia.” Is there anything i can take for that. Just to put it into perspective…rice, i can take it or leave it but if i even have 1/2 cup of it my blood glucose spikes and crashes. It crashes usually anywhere between 3.4 and the lowest was 1.7. Is there something i can take so that i can eat some carbs (ie half of English muffing with egg and cheese). I don’t eat a a lot. I fast everyday between 12-20 hours and make sure my first meal is high protein but as soon as i have carbs i suffer for the next 3 hours.
It happens because you are diabetic already, it is just that your high blood sugar is under control, but you are either missing on beta cells or your body cells do not accept insuling , dont starve, you better switch to a healthier lifestyle, change your diet to a low cab high fat and protein that should help.
Thank you for saying sometimes its your bodies fault. I started out on metformin many years ago,my body couldnt tolerate it. Then they tried other meds. I got nauseous and couldnt eat,was sleeping all the time, etc. They immediately took me off all meds and started me on insulin. After many years i was told my bodys barely producing any insulin of its own Guess i feel better knowing its not my fault but my faulty body
I have found keto to be unsustainable for me. I am 64, type 2 diabetic for 17 years, mildly active and on only 1 medicine. Oh, and yes, I am quite "fluffy". Twenty carbs per meal is much more reasonable.

As 28yr old and 3 months ago as new diabetic patient i am also very sport active every week(football) and i sadly i am type 1. My question is, as i am on insulin, before eating pizza sometimes(like 1, 2 times a month) before eating it how much would u recommend to take insulin? So far i using dexcom 7, and my results are between 89-99%-last 30 days 94-99% in green as very good result(as my diabetic nurse told me i am still in honeymoon🤔-and also was only 2 times that i was 89% never before bellow that) atm tresiba i am on 4 units and rapid 2units. So my q is, how many units u would recoment to eat small /medium/ size of pizza? So that wouldn't be very high spike in my blood sugar? Thanks doc and your videos are great !!☝️ Cheers from Ireland🇮🇪
Read and listen to this topics : 1.(indivisual) carb and insulin ratio . So you can know how many one unit of insulin is going to be equavalent to how many grams of carbohydrate you consume and after that start to calculate the carbs in whatever meal and do the math 2. Correction dose . So if its up the normal you can easily bring it back to normal range After all its journey for the whole life and you have to live and educate yourself with all that complications.
People asked me how I can stay on a keto level of carbs and I just replied, ‘No choice. It’s either that or severe joint pain.’ So I’m very low carb and it works beautifully. Dr. Anthony Chaffee himself is even a carnivore and states recent research does not link this diet to heart disease. As a Layman, I find the contradictions in advice very disturbing! There is a real divisive in the medical fraternity. Still, I enjoyed this balanced video.

The idea is to prevent sugar spikes. 20+ carbs at one sitting may spike too high. Try more meals per day, evening out your carb distribution. The lower the carbs, the fewer spikes, and less damage.
@@teresa985 Not if your peak is very high. Peak is measure at least at one hour after eating. Frequent peaks higher than 140 for non diabetics are considered a problem in the works already. For a better picture you need to check your BG before and two times after eating. Reactive hypoglycemia can develop if b drops too low too quick. This is when the CGMs are shinning; they minimize the finger poking and gives you a close to real time information with fair accuracy.
@@200Nora Thank you for the response. I actually do wear a CGM. I am constantly working to understand how my body responds to certain foods, Exercise, and supplements. I do not take any prescription medications or Insulin. Dr. Ergin is clearly not a fan of Keto diets and he does recommend eating some carbs every day. I was looking to understand at what level of a blood sugar spike begins to cause damage (even in the long term). Personally i try to keep my blood sugar spikes no higher than 140, but was looking to understand if that is too aggressive a target or should i be striving to keep it even lower. thanks again ken

25? Hey I'm close I studied well. Where are the exercise vid eos?
What is considered physically active? I work a sedentary job but walk for an hour after work every day and am very active on the weekends. I was diagnosed with T1D 5 years ago at 50. I limit my carbs to 40g a meal but am not in control.
Question I have type 1 but I keep my a1c in a good 6.6 range, but I am young and active and eat lots of carbs per meal around 70-100, are high spikes to let’s say 200-240 bad even if they go down to 130- after 2 hours?
6.6 is still damaging . Keep the karbs very low to get in the 5s.
I am a diabetic and went to a nutritionist who told me 120 grams a day. I was I shock
Thank you Dr.

I'm sorry u have this issue, but most people dont..they have a food addiction problem and won't change
I have found keto to be unsustainable for me. I am 64, type 2 diabetic for 17 years, mildly active and on only 1 medicine. Oh, and yes, I am quite "fluffy". Twenty carbs per meal is much more reasonable.
Glad I found your comment… I’m the same .. I have 20 carbs per meal, very easy for me
@@ange4739 how is your blood sugar?
That's inspiring. I was thinking g of 20 carbs p meal. I cannot do 20 per day
how can we count carbs?
I need diabetes cookbook.
Can you make video for gaining weight for type 1 diabetic😇
Hello i want to know i am daibeties patient can i start medice or not
thank you
20 grams of carbs translates into how many slices of bread?
Read the labels on various types of bread.
I stick to around 30 grams or less per meals. Should i go lower?
How are your levels
Thanks

I am not a diabetic-not that I know of anyway. Should I down load that app even if I don’t have a diabetes ?
SugarMD App is designed as a guide for people with diabetes
I eat 20 grams a day in cards.
Question? Do you mean total carbs or net carbs?
It wasn't clear to me whether you meant carbs per meal or carbs per day for the numbers you mentioned.
Zero Carbs. I eat only meat all my life and 60 years old and stronger than an ox.
I watch your videos everyday. .Thank you. I want to buy your product. I live in Africa. How do I buy your products
Your body needs some carbs. In order for your brain to function properly, it needs carbs. Look it up.

Thanks doc and your videos are great !!☝️
Cheers from Ireland🇮🇪
Read and listen to this topics :
1.(indivisual) carb and insulin ratio .
So you can know how many one unit of insulin is going to be equavalent to how many grams of carbohydrate you consume and after that start to calculate the carbs in whatever meal and do the math
2. Correction dose .
So if its up the normal you can easily bring it back to normal range
After all its journey for the whole life and you have to live and educate yourself with all that complications.
God bless you. To what does the recommeded amount of carbs apply- per meal or per day . Thanks
Are the numbers pertain to every meal or daily amount. For women, 25 g per day or per meal. Thank you.
Here's a helpful video for you:

People asked me how I can stay on a keto level of carbs and I just replied, ‘No choice. It’s either that or severe joint pain.’ So I’m very low carb and it works beautifully. Dr. Anthony Chaffee himself is even a carnivore and states recent research does not link this diet to heart disease. As a Layman, I find the contradictions in advice very disturbing! There is a real divisive in the medical fraternity. Still, I enjoyed this balanced video.
Is the suggested amount of carb (45, 75 etc) per meal or per day?
@user-nx8fn7jg1r It is per meal if you are very active, if not active than per day. Be sure to balance with protein and fats!

Are you referring to total carbs in a 24 hours time for a day? From Johannesburg South Africa 👍💕🇿🇦
I think he means 60 grams for women per day.
Is this per meal or per day?
So women need to eat a total of 45g of carbs a day if you are less active?
Yep!
@@SugarMDs So KETO, then?
@@ritasicari7518 People who have diabetes and want to reverse it with keto usually stay at 10-20 carbs per day.
@@SugarMDs A day or per meal?!
Interesting your anti keto
20g Carbs per meal is keto? I would say zero carbs is better and eat lots of fat for energy.
Does that mean fibre intake is unlimited?
15 gr of carbs per meal? 3 meals
OR
15 gr per meal including 3 meals and 2 snacks
30 grams a day or per meal?
No higher than maximum of 45 grams of carbohydrate every meal.😀
That's a tremendous amount.
20 grams per meal? What if you only eat 2 meals a day? Is 30 grams per meal okay, total of 60 grams a day??
The idea is to prevent sugar spikes. 20+ carbs at one sitting may spike too high. Try more meals per day, evening out your carb distribution. The lower the carbs, the fewer spikes, and less damage.

45 grams of carbs per day? 30% daily for women?
I bake my own bread, without sugar, that's my problem, how many cabs is in a slice of homemade white bread?
It's not just sugar flour is just as bad.
@@janeanderson6503 I know, I eat 1 slice ,sometimes a half slice
What what level is a blood sugar spike considered too high. I’ve heard as low as 130 and as high as 200 so not sure what to think
Approx 70 on empty stomach and less than 100 after 2 hrs of food are considered normal.
@@200Nora Please reply your views to the OP person
@@200Nora Thank you for the response. I actually do wear a CGM. I am constantly working to understand how my body responds to certain foods, Exercise, and supplements. I do not take any prescription medications or Insulin.
Dr. Ergin is clearly not a fan of Keto diets and he does recommend eating some carbs every day. I was looking to understand at what level of a blood sugar spike begins to cause damage (even in the long term). Personally i try to keep my blood sugar spikes no higher than 140, but was looking to understand if that is too aggressive a target or should i be striving to keep it even lower.
thanks again

MINE GOES OVER 600 ALL THE TIME ....NOT GOOD AT ALL
👍👍
Keto is 20 grams carb total a day. Not per meal. It’s 5% carb, 25% protein and 70% fat.
The 2.3 rating app? 🙄
You actually do not need any carbs in your diet.
When you take diabetes medication it's difficult to have zero carbs
