Hollywood's been running outta ideas for over twenty years. The milking of once classic monies, the reboots and remakes, and at worst the woke 'revisioning' of hit movies from decades earlier.

I am sort of split on it, on the one hand it was nice to see Eddie Murphy back in the role that truly made him a star, but on the other I felt the scenes with his daughter and Levitt overshadowed the scenes of the original trio, Foley, Rosewood and Taggart.

You forget about them almost as soon as you're done watching it and likely won't be returning back to it. They have no staying power. Nothing remarkable or memorable. No solid wholesome messaging or ideas that make you think more than 2 seconds.

Cheesy is what made the eighties fun . In conaeusin to other “ nostalgic “ films made thus one at least stays close to home . Bacon always a solid villain when he plays one. In comparison to today’s films it was nice to get a blast from the past .

Eh ... did we see the same movie?
The first one was a revenge movie with a guy who was pretty serious (and confident) most of the time ... except when he went into character to fool unsuspecting a-holes or bad guys; only then he did do the funny guy.
I totally missed that vibe in this movie. (I hoped it would be a revenge movie again where Axel would revenge one of the characters from the first movie or something .(maybe Taggart or Rosewood, ... and that Axel would team up with the other one))
The only scene that i liked was the very last one ... when they are in the car and Axel persuades Taggart and Rosewood to go do things they`r not supposed to again.
Oh yeah ... and i really did not enjoy the indignant woman that put him down most of the movie ... and i hate the "updated" 808 closed hi-hat version of the theme song.

I have a bit of nostalgia for this flick, because I saw it the year that I left California/Santa Monica/LA for a job with GM/EDS that was likely to land me in Detroit (turned out I landed in Indiana-no-place and moved to NYC after eight months and three days 😏
And I left an - eight year - on/off relationship with a California girl that reminded me of Eddie’s “girlfriend” so I spent the whole movie wondering if my career move was the ‘wrong’ move 😒 which, as it turned out, it was not.
Then came the Rodney King riots (as I was already commited to living in NYC) and Westwood - my teenage haunt - never came back from that… as California has deteriorated ever since… none of that made it into this picture but the OLD actors were as depressing as the “City of Angels” has become…
(and the last I heard of the Love of My Life, she ended marrying a cop and they relocated to Danbury Connecticu but there has been no reason to check back in on that part of my life 😏)

Weird trainwreck...yeah, callbacks, etc etc...but Eddie is strangely reserved, his responses, facial expressions oddly muted...plenty of it LOOKS fine...but it is clumsy. It feels like hamfisted budget-conscious aping of Tony Scott's confident, fluid style.
The music cues are OFF...they're shoehorned in and slapped on top of scenes but not comfortably embedded with any sense of rhythm.. which TOTALLY gives the feel of 'temp' tracks.
One gets the sense that they HAVE the footage to edit with the song in mind but don't understand the difference between pacing for the scene and cutting with the song meter in mind. For all I know it's the same post-crew who did the originals, but if so, the magic hath fled...
All this endless regurgiration of once-fun franchises and material reminds me of a quote from the great fantasy author Stephen R. Donaldson: "There's only one way to hurt a man who's lost everything. Give him back something broken."
They parade and puppet corpses before us and think we'll believe they're still alive simply because they've spent so much hiding the strings 🤦‍♂️

Saw it last night. Not very good. But enjoyed the nostalgia bits for sure. Hard to sit and watch thru and that was disappointing.
Eddie was good Eddie. Funny totally invested like he was as a younger man. Action. Comedy bits all over. And all the music from the first two we could handle, all within the first ten mins or so. That got old very quickly the music. But I enjoyed the hell out of it.
For some reason it just wasn't working. Maybe the camera work and angles, not sure. His daughter in the movie - That relationship dragged the whole thing down. As they fought and bitched there way to a loving relationship again. Yes real father daughter relationships can be like this, but it was not good acting on her part. And he was more focused on that than being funny. And every bit he had it was interrupted by Gordon Levitt as well. No breathing room for Eddie. The escape and helicopter were the best part but again something was missing.
Seeing rosewood and taggert together briefly was magic. But not enough of that. And serge was ok. The girl was funnier. Bacon was ok too. His speech on the rooftop was good. And the shootout in the street was cool. The mace scene was funny too.
    - Overall had some good action sequences. The comedy was tee-ball but I still laughed. The cameos I wanted more of. And the tone was alittle jumpy with the father daughter stuff and her acting dragged the movie way down for sure. Losing a lot while she was on screen as it went. 5/10 as a harsh score. But a well earned one. And still worth watching once to get it over with. We love you Eddie, so happy you were Foley again ! Thank You for Trying to your best. !!!!!!!

Another movie nowadays that spotlight's a tough woman of today, Axel's daughter. Something we did not need. How many times did she put him down for not being around when she got older? Too many times! BTW: Did the Axel Foley character appear to be the type of person who would have a poor relationship with his daughter? Lazy writing. And the actress was not easy to like. The reason we loved the first movie so much was because it was extremely un-woke and hilarious. This was a woke version and it wasn't very funny. You guys were too nice with your review.

I enjoyed it - but I have criticisms - the hanging of the car outside the side of the parking garage would have gotten a HUGE amount of coverage in the real world and the court system would have gone crazy protecting its own - there would have been a huge reaction and investigation into the corrupt cop - no way it would have been swept under the carpet. They should have gone with a much more sedate attempt to get her off the case, would have been alot more believable. Scenes with Axel and his daughter were painful - they wanted to have the estrangement but refused to put any fault on her, but I am sure Eddie said his character wouldn't have done anything terrible. Again, given that she was hanging off the outside of the parking garage on the first one and nobody seems interested in helping her, she would not have tried to get rid of her father so much. Again, YOU WERE ALMOST KILLED - she would WANT all the help she can get. If she was warned but didn't take it seriously (although Rosewood would) - that would make alot more sense. Eddie investigating her when she thinks she is in no danger - leading up to the shootout with the gang on a city street. Then she should have been serious and had dad help her.
That being said, they obviously cared about the original and did not do anything to take the characters down. Rosewood leaving the PD makes sense in context, etc. The writers did a good job, but their lack of experience with the real world (ie the legal system would go crazy with that level of attack on one of their lawyers) shows in some of the scenes. Wish they released it in the theatre - it would have done well.

The “Top Gun Maverick” of Beverly Hills Cop movies. It plays it safe, sure, but it tries (and succeeds) to match the tone and sense of humor of the first movie. I think a Beverly Hills Cop 5 could land very well, but they have to act fast before Ashton gets too old. Have him retire in the next movie.

Dissapointed Harold Faltermeyer wasn't brought back. Harold did both parts 1 & 2 entirely by himself with Keith Forsey, no orchestra. He also used far better synthesizer sounds. I'm surprised he wasn't even consulted. The score by Balfe is still good, however, and the tone was good, but i believe Faltermeyer should have at least been part of this film. He made this film series a worldwide hit just as much as Eddie Murphy's acting.

It was lacking in energy (which is no surprise with the age of most of the cast). It also had a very unsatisfying ending compared to 1 and 2 (I'll say no more). Best Character was Joseph Gordon-Lovett. They underused Kevin Bacon, very disappointing. He is a great baddy, he needed more function in this film. Brigitte Nielsen in comparison, got a lot more action in her role. I think the quote of it being a "Netflix Film" is accurate. It was a 6/10 for me. They didn't use enough of the Beverley Hills Cop classic tension music. They should have used that more.

I enjoyed the movie a lot more than I thought I would. The daughter wasn't horrible...and was hot. Jason Gordon Levit was better than some gave him credit for. Kevin Bacon is a great villain. Everyone is super old and this kind of action and them keeping it real about their age was funny. Taggert was cracking me up. Even Eddie Murphy going in and was about to BS his way into a room again and just stopped saying he was too tired...that was some real shit. It was good and I hope people watch it. Anything "woke" was shit he's said in previous movies before so don't get caught up in that.

The third one was already tired. Why would you want to watch this? The great Beverly Hills Cop franchise was 1984-1987. It was great! Why prolong it? It doesn't work. It's like Star Wars after 1983, Indy after 1993 or LotR after 2003. It just disappoints. Do new stuff!

  • @KilliK69

i watched the first half of it last night. It's surely better than the awful 3, but it lacks the edginess of the first two. Also he seemed to be sidelined a bit by his daughter and Levit's char. His manipulation doesn't land and he doesn't shoot to save the day. The original cast is only there for the nostalgia, but they are treated with respect.
I disagree with Chris, this movie is not that funny and action filled to deserve a theatrical. it's fine for Netflix, to spend 2 hours of light fun with one of the best stand-up comedians who still has it.

  • @mat.b.
    @mat.b. 6 дней назад

I agree with Chris: It's fine, it's...fine! It was funny, but it wasn't as good as the old ones, it needed more jokes IMO because Eddie was carrying the movie. The stuff was his estranged daughter was boring, she's boring, and it took up too much time, and Levit's character needed to be a funny replacement for Billy Rosewood, instead he was just too serious. I wish we got to see more Judge Reinhold in this too. Overall, it's fine, but it could have been a lot better under different direction.
