Bison Stampede on Yellowstone Bridge w/ extra Bison footage

- We saw a bald eagle on the North side of the bridge and around 10 bison in view on the other side not knowing 10 would turn into a hundred. The bridge shaking and a hundred bison running towards you was exhilarating.
This video is a repost due to copyright claims from the music on the radio.
My daughter and I were in Teddy Roosevelt National Park, pulled over to watch a group of wild horses. Then, the earth started to shake and in front of us, 50-60 feet away, it was a buffalo stampede. It lasted maybe 30-45 seconds. To our 8 o’clock were those wild horses, those thundering buffaloes. What a day.
Amazing experience!
I love Teddy Roosevelt NP. What a wonderful place to visit
@@GermanShepherd1983 yep. Not easy to get to, but a pocket of wonderful.
@@mxplk yep. 15 years later and we still talk about it.
There are no wild horses in the US.
It seems to me that they are way more organized than most people at any event.

Why the passive anger and anti people stance, princess? Just enjoy the remarkable footage without all that crap. It's tedious.
@ daddy joe. Ha ha good point! I hadn't thought of it til I saw your post. But you're right.

LoL well said
What a beautiful sight...how majestic they are in that settings...brings back thoughts of the native Americans and "wild west". Thank you for sharing.
Ikr how awesome 👌 👏 👍 😍
Well you might want to look up what happened to all the buffalo that left Yellowstone! Slaughtered!
@clot shots nope still killing them!
It is good to see the white were not able to kill every bison off when they tried to cut off the Indigenous natural food source.
@@JackOllie4 No taxes I bet or worried about if the mortgage and bills get paid. I bet Kings couldn’t have people living that way, just wasn’t fair to live free.
This was such a beautiful, amazing scene and the people who experienced it are so lucky. The size of some of those bulls!
The scene at the end made me happy. Seeing the bison on the Plains where they belong, back in their place in the ecosystem is wonderful.
It is good to see the whyt were not able to kill every bison off when they tried to cut off the Indigenous natural food source.
North America wildlife! I will have those memories forever...🐃
Can you imagine back in the day when there were so many that the stampede would last for days?
Anthropologists estimate it was one herd that traveled north to the limit of that range, and then turned back to go south to the limit of that range. It was eating and spreading their own manure over the fields
that made them regrow so they could keep traveling and eating.
The Cavalry stopped for the night along the Smoky Hill River in western Kansas. The following morning the river stopped flowing. They rode upstream to find a huge herd of Buffalo that drank the river dry.
@@johnwattdotca thanks for explanation. I thought it was a strange statement.
@@ecalose6785 Here's another strange statement. Did you know when white men first traveled across the plains they saw dinosaur skeletons sitting on the surface? The first one taken in as a strange object was a triceratops skull. Two groups of museum collectors raced around the prairie to find them, and they became the first dinosaur skeletons to be exhibited in museums around the world.
@@johnwattdotca Good ol rapis-- er I mean white men.
Maybe they were celebrating their bison-tenial. 😆

It looks like James "Scotty" Philips wish came true.
I did an essay on him in college.
He has a large role in helping prevent the extinction of North American Bison. After the attempted genocide by the U.S army, Scotty bought a heard of around 70 and built a special pasture for them on his ranch.
By the time he passed, his heard had grown to over 1000.
A few people bought from him to grow their own heards in the attempt to save the North American Bison population.
South Dakota was one of the buyers. The state bought a few dozen from Scotty and released them in a national park.
South Dakota today now has over 1,300 wild bison. Yellow Stone has around 5k.
As of now, a total of 20k roam freely in the U.S. (both government and tribal land)
But in total (privately & publicly owned) the U.S has over half a million North American Bison
South Dakota is currently home to most of the population.
This breed of bison only naturally exists here in North America.
It's not even close to the over 30 million the U.S use to have before the Genocide, but it's a start.
In the early 2000s we only had around 300k. So a huge jump in the past 20ish years, efforts are clearly working. Hopefully we can grow the wild population even more
Great info. Thanks! And thanks go also to Scotty Phillips and all the others who helped in their comeback.
It is good to see the whyts were not able to kill every bison off when they tried to cut off the Indigenous natural food source. But don't attribute that to another lone whyt man they would love to take that credit. It belongs to mother Nature alone.

My friends and I were camping at a state park in Oklahoma, no tents, just sleeping bags in the clefts of the rocks. When I woke up, there was a bison directly over me... I whispered to friends to look over... There was just a single, young bison there.... So I waited until he decided to walk off before I got up. We looked out over the tops of the rocks to see the rest of the herd on the plains... Incredible memory. Also, saw wild horses roaming on the reservations. So awesome!

What frightens me most about this video, is the desolat condition of that bridge. It looks like its about to collapse any second.
Bison: when humans do it, it’s rush hour or heavy traffic, but when we do it’s called a stampede?
Stampede is MUCH faster and louder. This is just normal travel.
I love how they stayed together, avoided the cars, checked on each other and made sure the babies were ok. Boss bison in front.
thanks for doing your best to respect these animals💯❤
Excellent video of a bison stampede. I would have liked being there amongst the bison. Bison are such magnificent looking creatures!
Amongst aye?
Except, this isn't a stampede just moving normally to another location. Still cool, but not a stampede.
@@juliehare3403 l just went with what the headline said.
Go on a bull run in Mexico let me know how you liked it.
@@richardkronberg4925 l will have nothing to do with a bull run anywhere. Just lead's to having the bull's entering an arena for bull fighting. The bull's get gored until they die. I do not like your way of thinking.
Can you imagine if 30 to 60 million who they claim once roamed the great plains were still roaming? Current statistics say there are 30,000 roaming.
Just thought of that! Imagine one herd would've been miles long 200 years ago. That stampede was just a tiny trickle.

Thank you for sharing that was a lot of fun thoroughly enjoyed it
I wonder why the title says, "stampede" when the bison where ambling along. Bison are capable of tremendous speed when either angry or frightened, which is rare.
Exactly, this was a click bait.
They are cantering on a tarred road so can't run as fast as they could on the Plains. Parts of it look a bit slippery which slowed the calves down.
If YOU were in that car and on the phone you would not be yelling "buffalo (or bison) are ambling towards me"!!
@@carmenmartinez2882 I bet it FELT like a stampede! I don't think they intended it as click bait!
I had a similar experience in Yellowstone and boy let me tell you it was intimidating and definitely felt like a stampede!!

It is their park. We had one charge us during mating. Wild animals in parks need to be respected. You did that. Thank you.
They are such magnificent beasts.
Interesting when that single one stopped the rest did too
Once in a lifetime experience. So neat.
There's actually a place called, 'Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump' in Alberta Canada.
Traditionally used by First Peoples on horseback 'cutting out' a section of the herd, and then stampede them over the cliff where none survived the 'jump'.
A vital resource was harvested and sustained the people in numerous ways whereby every bone sliver was reverently put to use.

Beautiful sight! I cannot imagine the days of wagon trains parking in a circle for protection from so many things upon them esp. in the night! These bison are magnificent in there insights and size.Reminds me of elephant herds that all hang together on there journeys.
The bison in the park are very used to vehicles. You didn't have to back up they would have went around you. Cool video though. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not even sure I have the words for this. Just amazing.
Whoa, how many tons were on the bridge? Any dents on the vehicle? Thanks for sharing!
Id say at most 50 tons. Definitely scary with an old bridge bouncing up and down. No dents just a dirt scrape from one of the last bison.
Looked pretty scary, especially since the cars behind didn't allow you to back up any further.
Not a stampede. Just a mob travelling quickly. In a real stampede the individuals would not have altered speed to dodge vehicles.

God doesn't make any junk. Nothing primitive about any of God's Creation.
Wow, the little steering decision of the driver determined the direction of the herd. The ones who went downhill are having completely different lives because the terrain differences had to land them in very different places.
It’s amusing that the human backing up completely misunderstood where the bison were trying to get. And the subsequent hesitation of the more shy bison. Good smooth job backing up & parking though. Commendations.
So the people behind the car backing down the bridge weren't smart enough to back away so he could get completely away. I see the same problem in gas stations people can not back their cars. These are the same people on a commercial airline that catches fire on the ground will stop to get their bags out of the over head.
But aren't the bison magnificent?
imagine the scene before the white man nearly wiped out the buffalo. the entire landscape was filled with them...
Wow... To think there used to be millions of them. Its sad to know why there isn't that many and that little stampede is not even comparable of what it used to be.
