Sri Lanka population is only 1/4th (a quarter) of the Tamilnaadu State population and it has already won 1 ODI WC, 1 T20 WC, 1 shared Champions Trophy and 6 Asia Cups ! All of this from a country this small with a tiny population ! Sri Lanka has the world record for being the LEAST populated (smallest population) country to win an ODI WC , LEAST populated (smallest population) country to win a T20 WC and the LEAST populated (smallest population) country to win both ODI and T20 WC ! These are very respectful records that can only be broken by New Zealand at the moment. There are only 10 states in India with less population than Sri Lanka ! Sri Lanka punches much harder than its SMALL SIZE is supposed to deliver. Also one must remember that Sri Lanka is the BEST Rugby playing Desi country beating all the other South Asian countries by a MILE ! Cricket is a baby sport compared to Rugby ! no offense

Moragoda sidestepped the first question quite nicely. Fact of the matter is that the public has resigned to the fact that there are very little repercussions for non performance by elected officials as there's very little accountability. Our country went through a shitstorm last year but no one has been held accountable. Same has translated into cricket. The people love the sport unreservedly but players aren't accountable for poor performances as a) their positions in the team is mostly safe (due to lack of talent to replace them) and b) they are compensated well enough so the desire to work extra hard maybe dies down after they make the national team as they are well set after that. That's why there are repeated disciplinary transgressions off field with little punishment. For all his flaws Arjuna Ranatunga didnt tolerate such lack of commitment and ran a tight ship which is why we ascended to such heights which is is legacy that continued until the mid 2010s.
Also don't lets get started on cricket administration and the example it sets for the team
All in all, the poor performances are indirectly influenced by the poor mindset of the country's leaders and lack of decisiveness and discipline and is why Sri Lanka cricket is a poor shell of itself. As cricket lovers who savored the 96 victory and were with the team from early 90s, it is disheartening but you have to manage your expectations.
A team will be strong only when it has a couple of legendary players.
In case of sreelanka at one time they had players like jayasurya, sangakkara, muralidharan,chaminda vas,malinga etc etc. Playing at the same time.
If the team is unable to find suitable replacements for such players, then the team starts to struggle.
We are not a cricket nation any more.
The boom of football and hockey beeing allways there in universities and promoting rugger damaged cricket alot.
No cricket is not big in Sri Lanka like India. Sri Lanka is moving towards Rugby and Soccer more. In Kandy and Colombo, rugby is becoming more popular as cricket.

Sree lanka won asia cup last year just by luck.
Yesterday they struggled to score 30 runs from 30 balls against pakistan.
At times i felt they were a minnow team unfit to play any big tourneys.
