- Hard Times Come Again No More was published in 1854. It was composed by Stephen Foster perhaps only a year or two prior to its publication. The song predates the American Civil war by several years, but it became more widely known during the war. Over time it became an emotional anthem for Americans-especially those who study the Civil War and the post war reconstruction era. This song has been a favorite for Mark for many years. When the time came to arrange and record it, he felt that James Mangan had the perfect voice for such a beautiful melody. The video was filmed in the Wasatch mountain range in North Central Utah.

Everything about this is so beautifully performed. The fiddle, the octave mandolin, the guitar and the voice. A tip of the hat to the videographer and lets not forget Mother Nature. About 50 years ago I saw the Stephen Foster show in Bardstown KY. I think he would be so happy to hear this rendition and that 170 years later his songs are still performed and loved.

This is just lovely. I am a living historian for stories and the music of the Civil War and I play this often, as well as the parody the soldiers sang; "Hard Tack..." I do think this is my favorite cover for this - vocals and instruments. TY!

I had a tear in both eyes, and I know not why. Something about it being one of Stephen Foster’s lesser known songs, certainly outside America, and even in this affluent age, it has something to say to mankind.
Just played again as I love this performance...I play & sing on guitar however there are at least four verses & most singers I hear only sing two or maybe three versus....pity as the words are so meaningful.... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊

The instrument in the video is an octave mandolin. There’s also a banjo in the recording too. It’s like a spice added to the recipe.

Thank you! Some songs do have a lot of verses. Many arrangers like us want to create a great arrangement without going too long or too short. In order to keep the arrangement just right, verses sometimes have to be cut--unfortunately.

This is a stunningly beautiful sung song with the gentlest played guitar and fiddle, I have only one small complaint, The skirt does not suite that man

Nice vocals, but not the best arrangement overall. Check out the 2nd South Carolina String Band. Perhaps the most authentic to Foster's era.
