Hi John… That is known as a mountain dulcimer and it’s not a new instrument, in fact it’s quite old. Dates back to the 1700s in America and for the back with related instruments in Europe. I find this rhythm calms me and a quiet settles in, but it also has pep to it and lots of nice instruments to single out & listen to their note. Lyrics are sad but pretty somehow. I'm playing it again!
