My favorite thing about this song is how it builds with each verse, starting off super pared-down with just one low-key voice and a single guitar with a little percussion. By the end, everyone is just wailing and jamming!!! So cool!

Per Wikipedia the lyrics consist of the narrator ruminating about overseas locales that he has never visited, but about which he feels he has some proxy experience, primarily via the music but also due to other presumed highlights found there. He loosely compares his own actual travels to these more worldly spots.
In the final verse, he observes that while he has "never been to heaven", he has "been to Oklahoma", where he was told he was born, thus implying a kinship between the two places. Hoyt Axton, who was born in Oklahoma, explained that he originally wrote, "...in Oklahoma, born in a coma...." However, it was considered inappropriate; thus, the lyrics were changed to "not Arizona".

I'm from Chicago (my father came here in his early twenties) but we used to go there every year on vacation to stay with my aunt and uncle from the time I was a baby until I turned 18. Elvis did a killer live version of this song. He didn't have as many hits in the 70s but he took songs like this, 'My Way' (written for Frank Sinatra) and others and made them his own live. And the mother of the guy who wrote this song (Hoyt Axton, who really was born in OK) wrote 'Heartbreak Hotel' for Elvis in the 50s. Circle of music life lol.

One of my favs! You can't go wrong with Three Dog Night! Other folks have mentioned that this was written by Hoyt Axton, who is in the songwriter's hall of fame, but his mother, Mae Axton is also in the hall of fame as well. She wrote a lot of hits in Nashville, including co-writing Elvis's Heartbreak Hotel. Also, I think the Hard Rock Casino in Tulsa has the "I've never been to heaven but I've been to Oklahoma" lyrics still above one of the main doors in the lobby.

As to how they got their name; Aboriginal Australians, in the Australian Outback, explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a "three dog night". They are from the U.S......the west coast, I think.

How about a reaction to the great Tony Bennet on his 96th Birthday. Try "I wanna be around" or "Who can I turn too" or"I left my heart in San Francisco" Happy Birthday Mr. Bennet. No duets please, just Tony

Anything TDN! Grew up listening to them. Met Chuck Negron about 6 years ago on a 70's themed cruise. Such a great band! Definitely check out Eli's Coming. One of their best!

Deffo road tripper song. I agree with Oklahoma being like heaven because that's my home. B.J. is right, wherever you were born and raised is your slice of heaven. The place you long for if gone for too long. Great vid brother and sister. Rock on.
