      Dude, you may not be losing yer mind as you may think! Most singles on the ABC/Dunhill label were "dedicated mixes"; meaning they were unique compared to LP versions. That includes Mamas And Papas, Grass Roots, Steppenwolf, and TDN.
      But in mid-70s, because some new ABC doofus scrapped all the singles master tapes "to save money", we only get album versions now.
      A company in Europe (can't remember which one) put out great-sounding CDs from internationally-sent ABC/Dunhill tapes.

      I guess I know how they feel. Every time San Antonio is mentioned in a song or anywhere, we would always get excited. San Antonio has always gotten the short end of the stick compared to Dallas, Houston, and even the tiny city of Austin. If it wasn't for the San Antonio Spurs, nobody would have heard of our large city with a small town feeling.

    Written by Hoyt Axton who's mother Mae Axton wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis living here in Jacksonville in the mid 50's.She was a school teacher here while writing. He inherited her talent and has many other well known hits.He was also the inventor in the movie Gremlins.By the way the Axton family was originally from Oklahoma. Maybe that is why the song refers being to Oklahoma. Elvis used to perform this at his shows. Why wouldn't he as Mae was a big part of him making it big.It was Mae who introduced Elvis to his manager Col.Parker.

    They had a bunch of great songs. I was a young boy in the 70's, but I always remembered listening to my older sisters play TDN on their red 8-track player. They are a great rabbit hole to go down. The next selection should be Shambala. My personal favorite, even though I used to scream out "but I've been to Oklahoma" riding my bike down the street. Another great selection you two would enjoy is Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Fishing in the Dark". I can't get enough of that song.

    I was a huge 3DN fan as a teen. Still am. Have their entire discography... except for anything after Cyan, when they changed up the band. To me it was never three singers and a backup band, it was always 7 guys with distinct sounds that melded together perfectly. Michael Alsup is an underrated guitarist. imo. He was never a shredder at all, but always played exactly what a song needed and was never repititious. I remember when Joy To The World came out and all you heard around our jr high school was kids singing "Jerimiah was a bullfrog" Huge hit. Met Floyd Sneed and Chuck Negron in Hollywood many years later.

      Cool story why "Shambala" never got properly mixed into stereo. Apparently one wasn't finished before the album's release date. The "stereo" version is really the mono mix in "reprocessed stereo" (one speaker tinny, other muddy, add reverb to both).

    Hoyt Axton (RIP) really knew how to not just write the music, but how to play it. While this one's a great TDN song, you need to react to "Eli's Coming", "One", and "Shambala" for some harder sounds, and "Pieces of April" and "Old Fashioned Love Song" (my senior year prom theme--yep, I'm old) as some of their more mellow tunes. These guys rocked the early 70s.

    • @djhrecordhound4391
      @djhrecordhound4391 2 года назад

      Richard, you'd probably dig Hoyt's album called "Joy To The World", where he does that, "Never Been To Spain" and "The Pusher".
      You might also get a kick out of the "ABC/Dunhill Singles Collection of..." series from a company in Europe. TDN and other artists on the label had mostly remixed 45s, but all the US single master tapes were scrapped "to save money" in the 70s.

      My favorite memory of this song was listening to it over NYC's 77 WABC, in Fairmont, West Virginia. Fairmont's about 400 miles from NYC. I've been to Oklahoma myself. I was riding with my dad in the car when this came over the radio. This was 1978, when I was 15. Worth it, to be pushing old age now, to have been young then. Posting 2-26-23.
