Bought Polytech for a song at gun show in Indy maybe '99. Sent it to Warbirds in Texas. Then traded for an LWRCI M6.
Took LWRCI to basement safe. A sudden flash of light overtook me, I fell to my knees, it was the shimmering image of Chris Bartocci nodding his head saying "be not afraid for you have traded wisely."
I gave him a Whataburger and he left.

Just bought a Polytech M14 from a friend of mine who had it for 30 years. He said he shot maybe a box or two of 7.62 thru it, and it looks brand new (as new as a new Polytech could look).
I was also confused about the Norinco vs the Polytech fit and finish. Everything I’ve read said the Polytech is the better gun but also read they were made in the same factory like you stated. And like you said, if the Polytech is better, it is because they accepted only better quality guns.
Either way, I like my M1. Keep up the good work.

I'm glad you made this video. I believe you are spot on with what research I've gathered over the years. I was under the assumption the ide side stamped guns were the later, better guns vs the early heal stamped. Since you won't say it, fulton armory was the main culprit to spread all the bolt panic and made stacks of cash doing it. Somehow my mid 90s ide polytech still has a good original bolt after all these years. Guess I should play the lottery.

I bought two polytech M1S rifles about 25 years ago. Stripped them down to bare receivers and had them rebuilt by Clint McKee at Fulton Armory, using all USGI parts and Krieger barrels. I don’t shoot for small groups on paper, but do enjoy banging away at distance. Regarding the Norinco vs. Polytech, I’m no expert, but Clint McKee certainly was, and his stated opinion was that the Polytech was superior to the Norinco.

A friend of mine was going to visit the base PX in Okinawa back around 2010-11. He was stopped by the base security from entering. Base security (not door guard) said that he was forbidden from entry due to "difference in national convictions". Now my friend held a Republic of China (Taiwan) passport, but the door guard mistaken it for People Republic of China. I was going to ask for the higher up to explain the confusion, but my friend decide base PX wasn't worth the hassle.
For those who guard our base, they really ought to have known better.

No so sure that all Chinese M14's used a forged receiver. Some of those I saw back in the 90's showed parting lines, typical of castings. There were indeed some serious "Kabooms" with the Chinese M14. Dean, a club member of the Snake River Sportsmen Club in eastern Oregon was severely injured when his Chinese receiver/bolt let go.
For the most part it took nothing special to swap in a surplus TRW bolt other than checking head space. In fact it was rather interesting that the Chinese M14 was rather close to G.I. spec and bolts could be installed by the user. I know because I put a TRW surplus bolt in mine, no machine work required. After Dean's experience I got rid of my Chinese M14.

A Poly Tech M14 split its receiver and damn near killed a friend of mine. He was shooting factory ammo issued at our matches. Like I said, the receiver split down the middle and sent the bolt into his face. That was back in the early/mid 1990's. I saw and owned Poly Tech AK's and M14's back then. The M14's would get a TRW replacement bolt and a few other surplus TRW parts as we could. All Poly Tech shit were a cut above junk. I am amazed that idiots covet them these days. My friend Dean, who got the bolt in his face, had not replaced his bolt with a TRW bolt. The Poly Tech bolts were rather soft and you could watch them deform after a few hundred rounds.
