I got issued an M-14 right before we deployed to Iraq again in 2005, 1 shooter per tank section was issued one. They were delivered to our Orderly Room in wooden boxes, packed in hay and slathered in gear grease. Wooden stock and all. The Garand also and the Enfield are gorgeous. It was the wrong weapon for the jungle and certainly has major drawbacks. Without doubt the rifle has been far surpassed by more modern designs but to me it occupies a hallowed place in my systems and is still very effective.

@@oConshien From what I’ve researched, the M21 is a semi-automatic only designated marksman rifle, with its main appearance distinction being its wood/polymer shell. The M14 is an enhanced battle rifle (the gap between an assault rifle and an anti-material rifle in terms of its cartridge) that has select fire capabilities and later renditions being equipped with RIS rails to mount PEQs, Bipods, fore grips, and optics.
I think another specific difference is that the M21 is more universal (MW1 was specifically the SAS) and the M14 is American specific (The armed forces used it as a DMR in the early 2000s, when the game came out, since it was used with both 141 under NATO and the 75th)

Loved that rifle. Accurate....ish....when you baby it. Perfect for the distances we were engaging at in Afghanistan at the time. The biggest issue I had with it was the weight. Especially with how front heavy it was with the bipod and Peq 15. My nether region suffered massively that deployment walking around with that thing. When the 110 came to the line units... just as heavy it seemed but the weight was distributed more evenly.

I have a Mk14 EBR made from converting a 1980's era Springfield M1A, much like the way many wartime conversions were done. What makes the Mk14 EBR glass bedding equivalent is that the operating rod guide is replaced by one that ties into the SAGE chassis using three sizable bolts. It's one hunk of metal when all is said and done. The final accurizing is done by properly tensioning a set screw in the very front of the chassis. This dwells out the last of the barrel's tip vibrations during firing effectively making the thin barrel act like a much thicker one, same as the way a barrel tuner does. The bonus to this experience is that I figured this out by exchanging several phone calls with Clint McKee at Fulton Armory back when he was alive. They were fun phone calls as we were both trying to figure out how close the aluminum chassis could get to a fully accurized, skim bedded, match gun. Combining it with carefully loaded 175gr match ammo, I was able to get the gun to shoot down to 0.75 moa shooting NRA Midrange Prone matches. That's more than plenty good. The rifle continues to hold accuracy today.
I've seen people try putting M1A's into the SAGE chassis skipping replacing the op rod guide. These never perform well. You need to fully unitize the action into the chassis.

    • @ExtremeUnction1988

@@ExtremeUnction1988 it doesn’t make sense to me either. It completely defeats the value of the EBR upgrade to skip it. Might as well leave it in the original stock. But people do it because they don’t cherish the idea of driving that pin out of the op-rod guide and altering their gun so it cannot go in the factory stock anymore. This is a go all the way or don’t do it mod.

Also with a Smith Enterprises 16" competition barrel installed and several other internal upgrades. Shoots as accurate or better as other 16" 308's as promised by SEI. As others have mentioned, main downsides are the cost and weight (to current lightweight .308 ARs), and issues with running suppressed. Mine comes in at just under 18lbs loaded.

I went through basic at Ft. Bliss in 67 and trained on the M14. I learned that you absolutely have to keep that weapon clean and lubricated if you want it to work in the desert.

You guys should tape a high-impact mic onto the weapon itself for the intro scenes. It will pick up the sounds of the internal movements and the grinding, scraping, pinging, venting and clicking of the operating mechanism will bring me to (and hopefully over) the edge I mean will improve your production quality. Tape a mic to that dirtbike too just make sure the mics have the right internal - dynamic microphone probably. Or a condensor mic if you've got the stones. Rode Microphone Company will be interested.

I’ve always loved the look of the M14/M1A rifles. I have a 18” M1A Scout Squad with a PA 2.5-10x Raptor scope on a SADLAK Airborne mount. I kept it classy (and heavy) with the wood stock and added a Bradley cheek riser. While it is outclassed by more modern .308 semiautos, like my DD5V3, it’s still one of my favorites to take to the range. I just took it to the range last weekend and was getting consistent 2.5” 100yrd groups with M80 ball and I’m not a great precision shooter.

The M14 may not be the most reliable, accurate, or well designed gun, but damnit I love it anyway. EBR or classic configuration, she just looks too damn good and is too fun to shoot.
    Thanks for the review.
    Love the MW2 music also.

Accuracy is hit or miss depending on many factors, but always at least minute of man and if you know your particular rifle you can really make it a tack driver. I think this personalization and individual character of each particular rifle is why so many who have one or used one love it because it bonds you to it and you really feel like you make it your own. Like forging your own sword or something primal like that.
As for reliability and durability they are top tier. Yeah if you cake mud on the op rod and fire it, it will jam up like in range tv demoed, but guess what so will pretty much anything other than an AR. However if you are in a much more realistic scenario and get a little dirt or sand in the magazine and it ingresses into the action, it will keep chugging along fine whereas many ARs especially older variants (pre fancy smancy coated bolts and parts) will choke right up. It is an older design, and not as optimal as others, but it is still excellent. That all being said the AR design is simply genius and Eugene Stoner is a national hero along with Sam Colt and John Moses Browning.
