What an interesting feeling to observe and feel second hand. I sold 2000 DVDs in 2012 as I anticipated their value waning. Now in 2024 I'm resuming collecting Blu Rays since they're cheap but I'm sticking to limited collection of around 500 this time. Crossing the fine line into hoarding is kinda fascinating to ponder. The point remains it only has value if it's something you cherish. Having a filter is important.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  3 месяца назад +1

I need that filter. Too often it’s been about amassing a big collection. But, it turned into hoarding when I realised I was keeping things for the sake of it. Things that wouldn’t be used by me again.
The amount got that bad that I was losing track of the movies and releases I truly cared about because they were buried amongst the mass. Like a needle in a haystack.
I’m trying to limited my collection enough to reflect my personal tastes and for me to be able to enjoy it without the feeling of being overwhelmed

@@lt.loomis8176 I’ll always be committed to this hobby. Just trying to make sure that the things I continue to own are for the right reasons. I had so many movies that I was just ‘not that bothered about’. For me, I want the collection to reflect me and my tastes rather than them getting lost in the mass of everything in between.
I think around 500 is still a good number. Even watching a movie a day it’s last a good 18 months… that’s without all the new stuff coming along.

      Agreed.
At one time they used to do a combined postage. One postage cost regardless of the number of titles.
When the postage sometimes exceeds the cost of the movie itself it just doesn’t seem worth it. I’m quite lucky really, I work in walking distance to two CEX stores and when I’m home I’m within a short journey away from a couple too.

I have a ton of DVD’s that I want to get rid of, most are worthless but I do have a reasonably large collection of more obscure cult/exploitation/horror movies that I will keep hold of. Mainstream movies are very rarely worth anything even on Blu Ray and 4K, it’s only the Boutique labels that hold any value.

I took a bunch of Blu ray to CEX with me. I didnt pre scan them… even some Blu ray are worthless, a bunch scanned at a penny !

If you have cult movies they're probably worth something on eBay.
If you have a place that buys DVDs you might get a little bit for each movie. Occasionally also DVDs that I can't get money for on eBay and get anywhere from 20 to $40. Sometimes I sell a few games too so that raises the prize.

Hi Phil, it is sad that DVDs aren’t really worth a lot god knows how much I spent on them back in the day. I still do buy the odd DVD from charity shops & CEX & a lot are still very watchable I recently watched the old Amityville film & the DVD was good. Why don’t you invest in a storage bag? For the ones you would like to keep?! I have culled some as usually it’s the cases that take up the room?! Best of your luck with your cull but don’t be too hard on yourself if it makes you happy you aren’t doing any harm to anyone 👍

I’ve bypassed the storage bags and gone for sleeving some into folders. Little A5 folders sit nicely on the shelves.
I think my collecting in the last has been more about anything and everything. Keeping hold of whatever came through the door. I’m limiting down to just those movie that I personally care for. There’s a ton in my collection that I’m just no longer interested in.
While it’s nice having the option to keep them, I’m feeling better freeing up the space and not being as overwhelmed.
100% agree that dvd is still watchable. If there’s a better alternative I’d go for that if I could… if not then the dvd is fine.

I think people worry about the money aspect too often these days when selling/donating. "What if I could've had more money from this or that?" And that applies for really anything, games too.
I donated my Halloween 3 dvd and shortly after that I stumbled on some info that it perhaps would have been worth as much as 40-50€
I thought about the potential money loss for a second or two and shrugged my shoulders. I could have got the money from it and then spend that on some other stupid stuff (most likely).
In the end the maximum money gain does not really matter, if the relieving feeling of getting rid of something is far greater.
On a general note, I got tired of upgrading movies, because prices are too high for everything. I changed my attitude and if I have a dvd of a movie that is in my top list and I watch it regularly, I might upgrade it, otherwise not. Will not upgrade movies that are not in my top list. I'll buy most new releases on 4K where available and settle for bluray or dvd for older movies I have not yet seen. Drift stores sell dvds for 1€ a piece so sometimes it's great to get a bunch of movies I have not seen for the price of one bluray.

I’ve stopped worrying too much about the money loss now and just concentrating on adjusting my purchasing habits and also valuing my space and getting the collection curated down to a collection of just the movie I love and will watch again. No more anything and everything.

This video was pretty hard to watch. I dont collect physical media but I understand your pain here. I collect sportscards and often many of them are now simply not worth the paper they are printed on. Its very easy to get into that mentality of "well i might as well just keep them anyway" like you mentioned. Its also painful because they do have value to you and maybe to some other collector. But the value is now so niche or low that like you said "the general public has spoken". I think the main thing is that if it causes you mental stress or anguish deciding whether or not to be rid of these items, its actually doing the opposite of what it should be. Our collections are meant for enjoyment. Ive binge watched all your videos as Ive been downsizing my own collection, and having someone who collects something else talk about their stuff has allowed me to look at it more objectively. I have no attachment to your physical media , just as you hwve no attachment to my sports cards. And so its easier for me to now look at my collection with an outsiders lens. Cheers for the great content

It makes me happy that my videos have enough commonality with collectors of various other items that people like yourself can enjoy the content and it gives ‘food for thought’
The collecting has kinda overwhelmed me at points. I love collecting and I love having a collection… it all just got a little crazy at times. I see the same sort of behaviours across other collections, be it movies / games / sports cards / Pokémon… and I realise that some collections can come at a cost.
The taking a step back and considering the collection and my behaviours has helped… although my collection now seems to be becoming less. I’m feeling a sense of relief as those numbers come down. It’s all starting to feel less overwhelming.

Wow my library still has DVDs. I can still sell DVDs to this place called vintage stock where I live. They don't give a lot of money but it adds up if you have a lot of them. And they'll take everything. Charity shops like Goodwill here in the US will take DVDs for free. If it's a movie that I enjoy then it's very hard for me to get rid of the movie even if it's not one of my all-time favorites. More power to you. It's a tough process. I've cleared out a lot over the past five years (mainly because one has to space out because it becomes overwhelming sometimes). Originally cleared out completely VHS stuff. Later Between my Movie, TV series (both DVD and blu-ray) and CDs (music and audio plays) at it's peak was well over 4000 pieces on discs. Some I sold and made money, some made little, and a solid third I gave away. However curating to what I like and gaining space was like a breath of fresh air. Granted I still buy and collect, but it's a lot less than I use to it's pretty much either a 4k to upgrade or something that previously never been released in the US that I've been waiting for. Currently between all 3 Movies, TV, Music on disc I'm at 1300. Would a lot less if some of the TV shows would be released on blu-ray instead of DVD. TV on DVD is too many discs, takes up a lot of space, and quality isn't as great as blu-ray, but what can you do if there isn't another way to watch? Sorry for the rambling. Cheers to you though it's a tough process, but worth it. You should feel proud and stronger afterwards.

I know I’ve mentioned in a previous video but I’m feeling like curating the collection down actually helps me enjoy the collection a little more. It somehow allows me more time to focus down on those movies I truly care about rather than being slightly overwhelmed by the sheer volume of everything else.
Collecting the way I had been, I had been getting more and more but spending less time with individual releases. Missing out on some of the extras I had previously been looking forward too.
Although I may miss out on some titles I’m actually finding more value in those I pick up now that I know I 100% want in my collection.
It’s a process. I need to continue with it but even with this first step I feel as though a weight has lifted.

My local library is having a clear-out this weekend, books and movies.
If theres Blurays there i may go mad as ive heard the prices are pennies.
I still have DVD vovered in dust that i almost musicmagpied in lockdown but 1p/10p and a bunch not on it, i just threw it all back in the back of the cupboard 😂
Its totally weird as im such a techy guy, always have been, but streaming is an utter mess.
My options were blurays for pennies or £1, or sailing the high seas again like the 2000's.
Equipment outlay, blurays work out cheaper 🤷

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

I’ve done that in the past with my DVDs and some blu ray. Scanned on music magpie and then ended up boxing and keeping them in the attic instead. I’ve come to a point now though. Rather than trying to store them I just wanted them out of the way. If they were up in the attic for years untouched then they might as well not be here. I’m glad of the clear out now. Despite failing at doing so a couple of times in the past.
I’d be tempted to visit a library doing a sale like that. I just have to be careful, in the park the habits have been licking things up because of the price rather than it being a movie I actually wanted in the collection.

Everyone keeps saying that digital streaming is the way to go but I say well I wouldn’t be too surprised when the shit hits the fan and all digital media libraries wither be music, movies or tv shows that they have accumulated all those years ago have vanished they’re wish that they haven’t thrown away the things the physical media stuff. On the other hand streaming entertainment is great if traveling around if you want watch something or listen to something on the go!

      Hey Trevor,
I’ve been picking up fewer and fewer movies over the last couple of years. This last few months has been more about considering what I’m holding on to and why.
Me collecting region 1 in the past was more about getting that release early or getting the better editions in terms of extras. Some region 1 DVDs still never actually made it to UK shores.
I’m trying to cut down what I buy so I can enjoy more of what I do buy… found that the collecting habit of buying too many became more about the next thing rather than that one thing you had in hand. I want to bring my focus back to the movies that I care about.
