    Nice haul. Those AMT cars are nice and easy to work on. Four screws hold the body to the frame. When you remove the body, the interior end doors can fall out. They just slide in. Easy to replace the wiring. The trucks are just held on by a machine screw, which also holds the draw-bar to the truck. There are two types of draw-bars and couplers. The plastic ones are small and one piece and don't open. The metal ones have separate couplers, with the Lift-A-Matic uncoupling system. There is a spring that keep the metal ones straight and level. When you get them set-up properly, add a touch of hot glue or Elmer's to the top of the threads on the inside so they don't work loose and sag. A nut with some Elmer's can also work. Resist any temptation to replace them with Lionel trucks, which some people do. They look terrible and change the entire appearance of the car. When you have the body off, clean it with some Dawn and a soft cloth. A soft bristle tooth brush will clean the fluting if it is too gunked-up, but a sponge will normally do the job. Shine the top with Simonize or a carnauba wax and buff with a soft cloth. No need to wax the fluted sides. Don't use any type of polishing compound, which contains abrasives and is meant for automobiles and can damage the tops. You can replace the window inserts with sheets that you can buy at any craft store. Lionel window inserts will work, but I prefer the the pale blue or neutral opaque plastic like the original. Set them behind a nice ABA Santa Fe set and they will look exceptional. On another note, those Rail Chief cars are real cool. Some of my HO friends had those back in the day. Some of the best looking HO passenger cars out there. AMT also made some excellent HO passenger cars, but I never see them anywhere. Either way, enjoy getting all of this stuff back into nice shape.

      Thanks John for your helpful information. I like the way you think. I did a video on a KMT HO passenger set and come to find out the aluminum passenger cars in that set were AMT molds. They were very shiny and undamaged from time.

    I gotta admire your big line-up of the AHM monster locos. Much as I’d love to have samples of those giant locos from out west, my layout was never planned to: a) run western roads, and; b) never be built with anything greater than 24 inch radius track, which would look totally silly with the overhang of those big locos. As it is, I do have an AHM Berkshire and several Mountain locos, and I admit they do have an overhang, but I just had to have ‘em for my eastern ‘road. Had to. Got smaller locos, too, from gear-driven locos, small switchers, up to medium steamers, plus diesels, but nothing newer than what ran up to 1966.
    Anyway, Ron, you have got quite the pile of models to repair, clean, and run, plus I do like that you have been working on building up your layout. It’s looking better all the time. Keep it up!

    • @classicmodeltrains
      @classicmodeltrains  11 месяцев назад +1

      Ive never been out east and have no idea of how "compact" and all the short runs to get from here to there. Never really though about it till reading your comment. Makes total sense. Sounds like you have a pretty nice and varied selection of loco's. I'm trying to keep my railroad anything before 1963. (well that's what I model. I will fix anything). Thanks for stopping by 13th

    3:24 I lived near Big Pine, California, and for a short while there was logging going on in that area during the 70s. The tracks followed highway 395. The tracks would actually end up over in Trona. From there the tracks would end up in Mojave. Then from Mojave would travel over to Boron and then in to Barstow.

    I just got a $25 IHC/ Rivarossi 4-6-6-4 Clinchfield Challenger that cosmetically looks almost new at a train show in W.V. It was seized up but getting power to headlight. Since it didn't run they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. The grease had hardened and locked up the bearings in the gearboxes. Your previous video on a similar one gave me a general idea how to get it apart. Hard to believe they made these in 1977 probably haven't been lubed since. It runs great now. Watch for the little spring inside the rear drive frame under the little C-clip holding the wheel chassis to the frame. Mineral spirits in a mason jar helped in getting the old grease off. The oil was sticky too like syrup probably the only reason I didn't loose the spring.

    Hmm; your channel as a miracle insomnia cure? It's a bit like saying the same of 'Spalcheque' on this computer. (Pete carnt spal; not since Spalcheque, anyway). Haven't time to see the whole video, but so far as I have gone, those extruded pass. cars are of interest. Might be an idea to find new trucks with steel axles and Delrin bearings. Not sure how aluminium would wear with steel? With aluminium there is always the problem of how to stick it in the absence of high integrity solder aluminium soldering in our workshops. Similarly with Mazac/Zamac - I never solved that one. I thought we could copper plate and use that as a solder base, but the model car restoration write-ups cast doubt. Of course, these problems magnify with the bogies more than with superstructure, as they are structural; somehow epoxy etc. doesn't impress. If you want me to sus out the comments on aluminium soldering in the Carr's soldering handbook, I will try and find it. There is a common problem with a lot of these kits in that the flutes go right to the end. That is to be expected as they are extruded in long sections. The only company that solved this, that I have seen, is Marklin who seem to have milled the flutes flat short of the ends. Worth thinking about. If you need to know how far short of the ends to trim, ask and I will find my measurements.
    Ron haz too many chraynz.

    • @classicmodeltrains
      @classicmodeltrains  7 месяцев назад

      Hello Peter. I'm not quite sure why you are referencing aluminum soldering? Them Passenger car kits need no soldering to assemble. The flutes do go all the way to the end but there is a plastic "end of car" piece that finishes the look of the end of the car. They are about 3/16" thick. Thanks for some good information in your comment. Never though of plating aluminum in order to solder it. :-)

    • @petert9749
      @petert9749 7 месяцев назад

      My error on the ends; thought they too were of aluminium. Those shells could probably form the basis of a very good model (English spelling). If I were assembling these I would probably make metal ends and throw out half the rest of the kit. But I am not assembling these. The plating research was a matter of need. I was trying to modify some Minitrix AA16C (Nohab EMD double ended diesel). What a headache! Those models were not made to be worked on and soldering on modifications was the only viable route, and not too viable at that. I asked a plater about Cu plating as a base for soldering and received a positive response. You might well need this some time. Research on what the die-cast modelling fold are doing showed that it can be a chancy game. Anything to avoid glue. About a million years ago there was a small add in MR featuring a (probably) electroless plating kit for spot plating on mazac castings. The idea was that to solder something onto the casting only the immediate area would be exposed to the solution. The tiny photo showed a cast boiler being lifted by a length of rail or something. I wonder how the joint aged.
      I have not had time to look into the split gear problem, but have long suspected the problem could be solved with reinforcement rings. Well done. You need a lathe, young man. Surely Not so expensive or difficult with your trade contacts. Just an idea.
      One thing I would like someone to try is rebuilding a Tyco motor truck so as to effect all wheel pickup. Unfortunately one of the axles would still need traction tyres with their compromised pickup properties both sides, but that can be accommodated.
      Time for me to shutup.
      Take Care.@@classicmodeltrains.
