I have a bunch of them, I've tried setting them up between the outside spots (shed, treehouse, monorail, etc), but the squirrels always eat the wires or trees fall on them and nobody uses them.
@@saveitforparts That's sad, they sound really fun. In sandland the humidtitty would murk the old gadgets quickly as well. I want to see a video on them but I have no idea how you would make it interesting. The thing being 'neat' isn't really enough to fill an episode.
After you get the train track all leveled and the sand smoothed and packed you need to spray the whole of it down with watered down white glue and a little rubbing alcohol. it will lock everything in place and make it a lot easier to clean. Normally you would have to avoid getting it on the rails but since you are not powering the train through the rails it shouldn't be an issue. Also, as someone else suggested you should make a cover for the dump cart and use it as the first container in the vacuum system. Suck the sand right into the cart.
This is simply amazing. The tunnels have come a long way since the ill-fated Sandfest over a decade ago. I would love to walk around those, much easier on the back than the crawling. Gotten old since then. LOVE IT!!!!!
Wooden sleepers, also known as railroad ties or crossties, are traditionally used to support and secure the rails on the track bed. You need some cute little scale-model wooden steepers to secure into the sand . Also consider misting it with a spray bottle and packing it down
I've been imagining how cool the Sand Bar train would be and its turning out even funner than anticipated with dinosaurs and skeleton caves in the tunnels! Can't wait to see whats next. I hope you have fun with it.
Man that sandstone look so soft! Barely harder than the industrially compressed sand professional sandcastle folks use at competitions. I've always been a little jealous of people with geology like this where they can just build their own caves. Where I live its all some of the hardest gneiss in the world that shrugs off normal blasting techniques.
My neighbor Rob would love this, we live in the driftless Region South West Wi, and I have a Micro sandland started. Same sandstone as sandland, Love the videos!
This is just the adult version of digging a hole in the back yard and making tunnels in the dirt with nothing but a couple spoons and your friends. Although instead of clay-rich soil it's sandstone. Seriously though, this is a really cool series
That's just a super-cute train layout. Nicely done. I like the choice of background music--it reminds me very much of "Sandstorm" for some reason. Which, you know, is kind of appropriate...
For the shop vac I suggest looking into a dust collector/separator. It will extend the life of your vacuum and put the sand into a external bucket. Might even be able to join two or more shop vacuums for extra power.
Looks like it’s coming along great! If wood does ok down there maybe try raising the tracks with 2x4s? Also, has anyone tried tunneling a staircase as deep as they can go? Also also, can that LiDAR scan be converted into a 3D object/stl? Might make an interesting challenge for the printer 🤔
Wood gets moldy really fast, the humidity is super high. Dave wants to see how far down we can go before hitting another type of rock, but he's busy doing another tunnel design now. And I think someone has 3-D printed part of Sandland before!
You should package up the sand you remove and sell it as Sandland Collectibles. Offer from different soecific rooms and let people collect the entire set.
I also use those EIOT club cards. They work great for automotive Android radios because they use all 3 networks. So I always have a signal as I'm listening to Spotify.
I hear you can use aerosol glue to adhere the sand to the tracks for ballast. Then use air to rid the tracks of debris. The funny thing to me is when I worked in a switchyard, we filled the locomotive with sand to use it for traction. 😂
A truly lovely idea with the train and such a beautiful old steam locomotive, I really like that. I wonder if you can also print the LIDA model with a removable cover, the layout has already become quite large. I'm curious to see what it looks like when the railroad line is finished.
Have you thought about using like a Harbor Freight Dust Collector? Also, I saw someone mention something about field telephones in Sandland.... If you can find some old mine telephones I will donate a phone system and weatherproof cabinet :)

This is all very interesting. I'm concerned that we're going to hear about a bunch of people who were accidentally buried alive somewhere in there. What about ventilation?

@saveitforparts to which you're probably correct, but wouldn't that be interesting? I was also going to ask if there has ever been a radiation survey at sand land?
We didn't get any track, they tried to give me the track for free but no one could figure out how to move it, and then they remembered they ran a bunch of utility wires through it back in the '70s. Now it's a walking trail at the zoo.
in a small space like that concrete will cause problems over time due to the difference in how porous the concrete and sandstone are.. dehumidifier and bare walls recommended. cool project though.
Dehumidifier with bare walls would make it crumble, the sand loses stability if it dries. Some kids have discovered that when they start campfires in the caves in St. Paul. If the smoke doesn't get you, the ceiling does when it dries out.
